2 Page 2 Meet the Breeds in New York City or Why does the club president have the worse behaved dog? Once again this year, The AKC Meet the Breeds Events in the Javits Center drew spectator crowds in the tens of thousands of people a day. Somewhere around 45,000 a day was the estimate I was given. WOW that s a lot of folks taking their picture with a Giant Schnauzer. I cannot even begin to express how much I appreciate all the hard work and effort the volunteers gave to make this happen. Rita Mitchke and Barb Crisafulli got the whole thing rolling but Rita was unable to make it this year. Barb and her two beautiful giants, Heike and Winston were outstanding. Meeting, greeting and being petted and photographed is hard work from 9AM to 5PM Saturday and Sunday. Winston would have done this forever if Barb had asked him too. He has the perfect disposition for an event like this: fearless and eager to please. Heike is one of the sweetest dogs I ve ever met. But, Barb was the smart one here as she brought a little cart (like the bag ladies use) with water, treats, beds, lunch, etc We could have all lived off her cart for a few days if necessary. Cheryl Ambrose volunteered and even brought her teenage daughter to help. They have a new puppy coming but didn t want the fact that they didn t have a dog to keep them away. Cheryl even got to practice her dog training skills on Sirius Black, our dog. But more of that story later. Debbie Coffin was a frequent visitor to the booth and gave us all a much-needed break from the excitement. Anna Stromberg and Ben were across the hall at the Afghan Hound booth so Ben brought over GCh Skansen's C'Sofia Of Grandeur and Bruno to the Giant booth. Along with being beautiful and mature, Sofia is a consummate professional and nothing fazed her. Bruno is around two years old and he thought this was the most fun thing in the world! We gave out old editions of Giant Steps and the club s Breed brochure and recipes for dog cookies from Giant Rescue and I would guess the dogs posed for about photos. It was a good, long, tiring weekend. Oh, yeah, did I mention that our male Sirius Black is the most spoiled dog on the planet? He s six years old and gets bored easily and he knows how to push my buttons to take him for a walk or let him sniff the girls or eat way too many cookies. I was so impressed that none of the other volunteers said anything like Oh, My God, does anyone ever train that dog? But, no, they just smiled with that look that my mother used to use in the super market when somebody else s kids where screaming up and down the aisles and she would say something like, poor thing, she really has her hands full with those little Indians. I appreciated their patience, understanding and attempts to keep me from strangling a bored to death-adult male Giant for two days. That being said, when it was all over, my very tired co-pilot was happy to head home. He fell asleep with his head in my lap before we left Manhattan and all was forgiven Next year, I will bring a puppy! I don't know why Doug said he was naughty, he looks perfectly behaved here!
3 AKC Judging Task Force Proposal Seeks Feedback from the Fancy New York, NY The AKC Judging Task Force (JTF) has published a draft proposal that is being considered and discussed by the AKC Board of Directors. The draft proposal Appendix A was included with the most recently published October 2013 Board minutes. The JTF members Dr. Charles Garvin, Chair, Kent Delaney, Douglas A. Johnson, and Daryl Hendricks encourage the fancy to provide comments, suggestions, critiques, and corrections. These will be evaluated by the JTF prior to the final proposal being presented to the AKC Board for approval. Please send your input promptly to judgingtaskforce@akc.or g. Read the proposal below APPENDIX A AKC Canine College* (temporary name) Introduction One of the assigned projects for the AKC Judging Task Force is to investigate various distance-learning possibilities. The creation and development of a virtual, computer-based simulation of a judging experience could be of significant value in the education and evaluation of aspiring judges. This document will briefly describe a basic model whose framework could be used for multiple purposes. It cannot replace all the valuable hands-on ways of learning about dogs and judging, but it can be an efficient and effective component of an educational journey. The Basic Model On a computer screen, the participant is shown a class of six dogs, one by one, with a series of photographs showing side views, front, rear, head, and breed specific examination perspectives, and videos of movement, including down and back and around the ring for each dog. The participant chooses which images to view, and then places the first four dogs in order, first through fourth. Validation To determine the correct answers, the instrument would be given to ten different breed experts (chosen by the Parent Club), and their placing's combined to form a consensus ranking of the six dogs. There would not be just one correct answer, rather a range of acceptable placements. Multiple Purposes 1. Judges education The participant could compare his or her answers to the preferred responses of the breed experts. The breed experts could be asked to record their explanation for each of their placements, and the participant could learn why the dogs should be placed in a particular order. 2. Judges evaluation The participant s score how well his choices matched those of the experts would be useful data for consideration by the Judges Review Committee for an aspiring or applying judge. The participant could explain his choices, which would provide evidence as to how well he knows the breed. 3. Judges recertification Should there come a time when it would be appropriate for a judge to demonstrate his competence, comparing his scores and explanations to those of his peers would provide objective evidence of his breed knowledge or lack thereof. A diligent judge may want to self-assess his abilities to evaluate a breed, especially if it has been some time since he judged them, or has a big assignment coming up. (see also 6. Practice sessions below) 4. Field Representative education This model should help aspiring or potential Field Reps to enhance their learning on the large number of breeds that they need to know and understand in order to perform their job well, and would be a good review tool for the continuing education of all Field Reps. 5. Breeder education While most breeders and exhibitors would be interested in knowing what judges are taught, the model could be modified to include vali- Page 3 dated expert breeder opinions on the reasons for placements from a breeding or breed function point of view. 6. Practice sessions After increasing the pool of examined dogs in the model to avoid duplication or memorization of the actual evaluation, aspiring judging applicants could test themselves before applying, both to improve their placing abilities and to see whether they are ready for advancement. 7. You Be The Judge game With appropriate simplifications, the model could be a potentially popular game with the public, letting gamers compete and compare their top scores with others on-line.
4 Page 4 AKC Task Force, continued Advanced Options 1. Increasing the number of dogs entered in the class from six to eight would increase the number of different ways four dogs could be placed from 360 to more than 1,600. Validating the ranking would still be straightforward. Obtaining cogent expert commentary with so many choices would be more challenging. 2. Creating of pool of twenty dogs from which six are randomly selected could help mitigate the possible memorization or sharing of preferred answers. 3. A time limit in the evaluation mode would come closer to the real world pressures of judging in the ring. 4. In future years, more dog examples could be added and placements and commentary could be updated. Necessary Ingredients 1. Six (or more) dogs with good quality images, standing and in motion. 2. Similar to the old Hands-On Test, prefer two examples of good quality, two of average quality, and two of mediocre quality. 3. Prefer dogs or handlers not be recognizable, or may use one handler for many or all dogs. 4. Dogs are to be in show trim and condition, properly trained and handled. 5. A list of 10 breed expert judges willing to participate. 6. Identify and photograph any breed specific features normally examined in the ring. Known Challenges 1. This would not duplicate the touch and feel of an actual dog examination, especially in coated breeds. 2. With so many breeds to cover, this will be a large project and potentially very expensive and time consuming. 3. Parent Clubs will vary in their ability to provide dogs, images, and impartial experts in a timely manner. 4. There will be difficulties obtaining uniform presentations of the dogs, both in one breed and across many breeds. 5. We need to avoid promoting recognizable dogs. 6. Who will grade the explanations of placements, and how will that be done? 7. The costs and maintenance of computer services could be substantial. 8. The set of six dogs may be too similar/difficult or too obvious/easy. Summary The development of this model could provide an effective educational opportunity by demonstrating preferred judging placements. It could serve as an objective measurement of a judge s ability to properly place dogs in a virtual show ring. The model could be a valuable addition to the judging environment. This model could continue to be developed and improved, and extended to many other uses. AKC Judging Task Force JudgingTaskForce@akc.org Dr. Charles Garvin, Chair Kent Delaney Douglas A. Johnson Daryl Hendricks

7 Page 7 Lure Coursing It s Not Just for Sight Hounds! The American Kennel Club recently created a new event that allows all dogs to discover the excitement of lure coursing. "The Coursing Ability Test can provide a wonderful community outreach opportunity, an enjoyable experience for dogs and owners and a way to expose a wider audience to the sport, " said AKC's AVP of Performance Events Doug Ljungren. "Most dogs will chase a lure and have fun in the process." The Coursing Ability Test (CAT) is for any dog of any breed, including mixedbreeds, as long as it is at least 1 year old and individually registered or listed with AKC. To pass the test, a dog running alone must pursue a lure, completing the course with enthusiasm and without interruption within a given time. Dogs that pass the CAT three times will earn a Coursing Ability (CA) title. Ten passes and a dog earns a Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA) title, and 25 passes results in a Coursing Ability Excellent (CAX) title. Licensed lure coursing clubs may hold CATs in conjunction with a licensed lure coursing trial or as a standalone event. 10 National Animal Interest Alliance Page 10 Oct. 10, 2013 Dear Kennel Club: For 22 years, the Na onal Animal Interest Alliance (NAIA) and its sister group, the NAIA Trust have been safeguarding responsible animal owners and educa ng the public about the cri cal difference between animal rights and animal welfare. As one of the only exis ng animal advocacy organiza ons that recognizes the importance of hobby breeders and the invaluable efforts they put into improving their respec ve breeds, our work is vital to the future of purebred dogs. If your club is looking for a good organiza on to support, please consider dona ng to NAIA and/or NAIA Trust this year. We rely en rely on dona ons for the work we do; we need your financial backing to succeed. In the two decades since NAIA first confronted the radical animal rights agenda, many similar groups have come and gone, but we re s ll here, figh ng on your behalf. Despite incredible odds, NAIA and our affiliated organiza on NAIA Trust have endured and grown stronger every year. Today we are respected as an accurate, reliable and fact based resource by media, industry and lawmakers; and we are recognized by our cons tuents for our legisla ve skill and success, our subject ma er exper se, and for our many programs, publica ons, model legisla on and for hos ng world class conferences. In addi on to our very produc ve day to day ac vi es already men oned, for the last two years NAIA and NAIA Trust have focused on expanding infrastructure and strengthening our founda on to assure our long term influence: We completely modernized the NAIA website naiaonline.org, integra ng new technology and greatly expanding our social media capacity. We redesigned and expanded the NAIA Shelter Project shelterproject.naiaonline.org, the leading source of shelter data in the US. Working with the Florida Assoc. of Kennel Clubs we passed a version of NAIA s model shelter bill naiaonline.org/pdfs/shelterimportandrepor ngmodel.pdf opposing the importa on of dogs by animal shelters, and imposing repor ng requirements on shelters. We completed the last phase of a scien fic study on US household dog ownership trends with two respected animal scien sts. The Lobby Center h p://capwiz.com/naiatrust/home/ within the NAIA Trust website naiatrust.org is undergoing a complete upgrade, which will greatly expand our legisla ve capacity. The new legisla ve pla orm is will be live by mid Oct. 11 Page 11 National Animal Interest Alliance, continued I m proud to report that these improvements are already producing measurable results. The new technology enables us to reach a much wider audience than ever before and generates higher website traffic and more media calls. They also raise our overall efficiency so we re able to accomplish more with less. But as well posi oned and frugal as we are, it takes money to successfully counter animal rights propaganda, to raise the image of purebred dogs and breeders, to support likeminded organiza ons and individuals, defeat an dog legisla on, and expand our media outreach. We deeply appreciate of all the support we ve received along the way to achieving our present level of opera on, visibility and influence. Your generous financial support at this me will propel us to the next level of opera on, one that empowers us to become a well known, trusted alterna ve to the radical animal rights groups that currently dominate the public agenda for animals. Thank you for standing with us as we take this exci ng step! Our address is at the bo om of this le er Sincerely, Pa Strand, Chair and Na onal Director The NAIA is a 501(c)(3) organiza on under the Internal Revenue Code. Its primary purpose is public educa on and awareness. Typically dona ons to NAIA are tax deduc ble, but always check with your tax accountant to be sure. NAIA Trust is a 501(c)(4) organiza on under the Internal Revenue Code. It can engage in more lobbying, which enables us to maintain a strong legisla ve presence. Dona ons to NAIA Trust are not tax deduc ble.
