After I chuckled and thought how true it was, I couldn t help but ask the question, in this 50th Anniversary Year of the Giant Schnauzer Club of America, have we been the good stewards of the breed that we need to be? Have we pulled our breed up or dragged it down? Sitting in the stands at Madison Square Garden for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, it became apparent that the dogs were, indeed, pulling man up to a higher level of sagacity. The Giant Schnauzer breed judging alone was worth the three- hour train ride. Congratulations go, not only, to GSCA member Tonilyn Fay for a nice win but also to the other entries for which we all clapped and cheered. At one point, a friend of ours (who was thinking about getting a Giant and thought this would be a good place to meet owners) asked why I was clapping for every

2 With the recent devastation that has hit Japan, our hearts and prayers go out to our GSCA members Seishiro & Misuzu IIkuta and Sonoko Sasano. You are in our thoughts. Message From the President (continued) Giant, which was my favorite? My answer was simple. I wasn t clapping because I liked the dog or knew the owner. I was making noise simply because it was a Giant and it was there. He got it. I know the GSCA will never have the numbers of dogs that some of the more popular breeds have, and that s okay, but I don t think even the Golden Retriever people exhibited more excitement than the Giant Schnauzer Fans. We can learn a lot from our dogs if we pay attention: loyalty, persistence and dedication and unconditional devotion come to mind. I m sure there are more. It s snowing again today in the northeast and my two dogs are patiently waiting for me to finish this so we can do something. Like, take a walk in a nor easter. I suppose that can be fun, too. While mine are not old or little, the scene of them laying patiently at my feet, makes me think of another quote by a famous New England dog lover, Edith Wharton. My little old dog: A heartbeat at my feet. - Edith Wharton Be a Giant fan at the next dog show you attend. Yell, clap and stomp your feet when the Giants enter the ring. You ll be pleased at how good it makes you feel. Doug Hill President, Giant Schnauzer Club of America Message From the Board The 2011 National (Oct 5-9) will be indoors in the Events Center at Purina Farms, Gray Summit, MO. While being indoors has advantages, especially with the variable fall Missouri weather like we experienced five months ago, there are a few trade offs and increased costs. Among these costs are the hall, grooming space and full service RV space rental. The hall rental is being shared with the American Bouvier des Flandres Club (ABdFC). ABdFC is having their National at the same time. We are also sharing expenses for two judges. Another area of increased cost is hospitality. Purina Farms has a food service available in the Events Center page 2

3 Message From the Board (continued) and to promote that, they prohibit outside food and beverage brought into the building. This will be a change from the Nationals where we have been treated to relatively low cost lunches put together by the hardworking volunteers that are ubiquitous at GSCA Nationals. The club can contract for a buffet luncheon or have participants obtain their lunches directly from the cafe. The host hotel is the Holiday Inn at Six Flags, 4901 Six Flags Road, Eureka, MO 63025, (636) The tentative schedule for the week thus far has the ABdFC holding an all breed agility trial on Monday and Tuesday. There will be GSCA obedience and rally trials Wednesday morning, afternoon and on Thursday morning. Breed & sweeps on Friday (Midwest Regional I), judges Paula Nykiel and Marianne Mazzenga, followed by the general membership meeting. On Saturday (National), breed, sweeps, parade of titleholders, judges Wilfried Lohmann, Robin Greenslade, followed by the annual awards banquet. On Sunday (Midwest Regional II), breed, judge Judith Goodin. There will be one premium for the GSCA events and the closing date for entries and catalog advertising will be September 14. Information for the all breed agility trial will be published as soon as it is available from the ABdFC agility trial secretary. The 2011 National website will be online within a week or two and additional information will be included in future newsletters. The donation, dedication, sponsor spreadsheet will be on that website. The Specialty treasurer is Shelia Lietz at sklietz@gmail.com. For those who do not have internet access please contact Sheila at 1338 Cherokee Lane, Ottawa, IL 61350, (815) , to dedicate or sponsor an award or make a general donation. A Giant thanks to those who included a donation to the National and/or Regional specialties with their membership renewal. 4 Member Profile Name & Location Jennifer Tennison, Texas Your Giants Names Linch Pins Luscious Lola "Lola" and Ingebar's Sound of Music "Liesel" Occupation Accountant How long have you been a GSCA member? 5 Years How did you get into Giants? I got into Giants when I was young because they are so beautiful, loyal, noble, and brave. I think that they are truly the most wonderful dogs of all the breeds. Do you have other pets in addition to Giants? Horses What do you do with your Giants? We compete in obedience trials. Do you have other hobbies besides dogs? I used to show horses in hunter and jumper competitions but now obedience has taken over. What is your dog(s) favorite treat and/or toy? Lola has a rope tug that she is mad about and Liesel has a stuffed purse that she is crazy over. What was the last dog-related thing you read? I just finished "That Winning Feeling" by Jane Savoie, which is about dressage horse competition and it relates to dog competition as well. It was a fantastic book and I highly recommend it. page 4

13 February 22, 2011 Addendum Constitutional Vote In a unanimous vote of approval at the February Board of Directors meeting, the board voted to uphold the validity of the 2009 vote and this constitution and by- laws will hold until such time as changes are submitted to the board by the appropriate committee or by 20% of the membership, as outlined in the constitution (Article VII, section 1). The validity of the vote to the GSCA constitution was determined after extensive research, discussion and examination of the facts. Telephonic Board Meeting Minutes ~ February 8, 2011 (continued) Several areas of concern were raised that could draw into question the results of the vote. A) The ballots were returned to the accounting firm Cadick & Williams and not the secretary as required in the constitution. There is no reference to why this was done in the minutes, however, during the Board meeting at the 2009 National it was discussed as being a way to remove any perception of impropriety in the voting process/counting. Though this did not follow the constitution, this procedural irregularity had no impact on the outcome. B) The vote on the changes was presented as an all or nothing vote. Members could not vote on the changes individually. The previous membership vote, (1997 Standing Rule changes) was voted on with each change voted individually. Though this process did not follow past practice, a requirement to do as before has not been found or provided. Members had the opportunity to reject all the changes but chose not to do so. C) The GSCA membership year at the time was September 1 through August 31. Dues were due by September 1, however the club provides a 90 day grace period during which the members are still on the roster even though they may not have paid the new year's dues. Unpaid members were not removed from the roster until Dec 1, after which they could be reinstated with a $5 penalty. Ballots would have been sent to all members on the roster on October 26, which would include members who paid for that year and members who had not yet paid. The roster provided to Cadick & Williams would also have included paid and nonpaid members. The issue has been raised that someone could have voted and then not renew. They then would not be for the year in which the election was held and their vote should not be counted. In the board s attempt to resolve this issue, Linda Wilson of Cadick & Williams informed the board that she still had the ballots, which were signed, along with the accompanying roster. She reassured the board that the ballots could be examined and a list of voters prepared. The cost would be $100/hour and could be time consuming as they attempted to make out signatures. GSCA Membership Chair, Bill Combs also indicated that with extensive time and effort, he could determine when (day/month) members had renewed in 2009 for the 09/10 membership year. Bill stated that his records can provide that information however it would be time consuming. From the voter list provided by Ms. Wilson and renewal information from Bill Combs it could be determined if there had been any improper votes. If there were any improper votes, then the list would go back to Linda Wilson who would remove those votes from the results. These are the results of the election. Total of 238 ballots received: Yes 201; No 31; Uncommitted 5; Unknown 1. The constitution requires: (Article VII Section 2) "The favorable vote of 2/3 of the members in good standing whose ballot are returned within the time limit shall be required to effect such amendment." (66.6% required) For this discussion, the board was most restrictive on the yes votes. Assuming that all the "no", "uncommitted" and "unknown" ballots are valid, that would establish the two thirds yes requirement to be 74. It would take 74 "yes" ballots to pass the changes. For this past election, 128 "yes" votes would need to be invalidated to change the outcome of the vote. { (one less than the required 2/3 required to pass)} 37 ballots = 33% 74 ballots = 66% 111 ballots required for 74 voters to be 2/3s "yes" if 37 aren't "yes". 63% of the yes votes would need to be invalid (128/201) to change the outcome of this vote. It is not realistic to consider that the vote would change and it is not financially prudent to expend club resources on a matter that has been overwhelmingly voted for by the membership. Also, no member has suffered any harm, loss or been damaged by this vote. page 13
