1 Volume E9 September 2011 Upcoming Events Giant Schnauzer Club of America Newsletter October 3-9, 2011 October 7, GSCA National Specialty Purina Farms St. Louis, MO 2011 GSCA General Membership Meeting Purina Farms St. Louis, MO Nov , 2011 AKC Meet the Breeds Javits Convention Center New York City, NY Dec , 2011 AKC Meet the Breeds Orlando Convention Center Orlando, FL July 5-8, 2012 Upcoming Events (continued) May 8-12, GSCA National Specialty Texas Kennel Club Cluster Dallas, Texas 2013 GSCA National Specialty Purina Farms St. Louis, MO Message From the President Size Matters, but reputation is everything I know that this looks like the same headline as last month s message, it is. While it may look like I m in a rut, bear with me and let me explain. My words this month do not refer to the size of our dogs, but to the size of our club and the specialty shows we hold. Last night s board meeting was very exciting and I came away from it feeling incredibly fortunate to be able to work with a group of dedicated, selfless individuals like the board of directors of the GSCA, the show chairs and committees for 2012 and This board and a number of club members have spent many, many hours this last year preparing for this event. Will it be the biggest National Specialty in Giant history, no, but 334 entries ain t too bad. Will it be well attended? Yes and I know it will be the premier event for the Giant Schnauzer fancy and our club this year. Please plan to come even if you haven t entered your dog. I know that donations are not where they have been in years past, even though we have had many very generous folks step forward and give. It s not too late if you have any Giant Schnauzer items that can be auctioned at the banquet, we would love to have them. We have some very nice things already but it would be greatly appreciated to have a few more. Be

2 Message From the President (continued) sure to check out the fabulous 8 base relief head donated from the estate of a departed club member - bring your check book and plan to bid high and bid often. You may never see one of these again. Along with donations, we can use the gift of your time at the National. The GSCA will have a booth with information about our club for new- comers, most of our standing publications for sale, BEAUTIFUL shirts and apparel designed for the 2011 National Specialty and, of course, the ubiquitous raffle tickets. We have volunteers to tend this booth but would love to have more. If you are new to the club and want to meet other people, this would be a perfect way to spend a few hours of the week. If you ve been a member since 1962, this would be a good chance to renew old (no pun intended) friendships and acquaintances. Then there s always cold hard cash. Judges cost money, whether we have 50 entries or 500, same for the venue, food, photographer, etc, etc, etc Thank you to the many who have already opened their wallets to the 2011 National Specialty fund but we can always use more. All the expenses of a National Specialty are paid for by your club s treasury, less any donations received and monies raised at the event. Now would be a good time to give if you are able. Those attending the annual meeting will be brought up to date on a number of topics presently on the agenda: A review of the club s business over the last year and plans for the future by the president. A review from Mike Rutkas and Kim Demchek s recent participation in the AKC National Parent Club Canine Health Conference in St. Louis - amazing things are coming in the field of genetics and dog diseases and Mike thinks we can raise $20,000 to have the entire gene mapping of a Giant Schnauzer completed. I think he might be able to do it. There will be a brief overview of the tremendous progress being made on the Constitutional Review process, a glimpse into the future with an update on the th Anniversary National in Dallas, 2013 Tri- Schnauzer- Palooza (I just made up that name) and the 2014 National plans being roughed out right now. And lastly, a talent search for vacant committee chairs, western regional director, membership chairperson and rescue liaison, as well as, upcoming expiring seats of board members will be announced and applications gladly accepted! Be sure to stop at the GSCA booth as soon as you arrive and say Hell- o and pick up a pocket schedule for the entire schedule of events. This schedule will contain time and locations for Obedience, Agility and Rally Trials, Conformation Shows, seminars, meeting, banquets and dinners. We have tried to make a quick reference that can be used by everyone from exhibitors to the casual Giant lover. So, back to the message at the beginning Size matters, but reputation is everything. The 2011 National Specialty will be a professionally conducted show, performance trials, conformation shows with beautiful dogs and, I m sure, some of the best days of my summer; eating, talking Giants, awarding outstanding achievers and volunteers and presenting in the best way possible our club and our breed. This may not be the biggest National Specialty in the history of the GSCA in entry numbers, but it will certainly be able to hold its own for professional organization, quality of events and dedication to a breed of dog we all share. See you in a few weeks! Doug Hill President, GSCA Good luck and safe travels to everyone heading to the 2011 National Specialty in St. Louis, MO. Watch the GSCA website and 2011 National Specialty Facebook page for daily results. page 2

3 Member Profile Name and Location Ann Moser, Boise, Idaho Occupation Wildlife Biologist Your Giants' names Hatten's Elementary, My Dear CDX RA - "Watson" and Aspen Grove Crazy Cricket - "Cricket" How long have you been a GSCA member? 2006 How did you get into Giants? In 2004, my Mom, sister and I went to the Westminster Dog Show. At the time, my mom was showing Cardigan Welsh Corgis and my sister had just bought a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon puppy. I was training a Griffon to be a human remains detection dog (aka cadaver dog). Although Edgar was an excellent search dog in urban settings, he usually chose to hunt for birds instead of cadaver material when we were out in the sagebrush or woods. I was starting to think about a new puppy. At Westminster, I just happened by the Giant Schnauzer ring...and was in awe. I started doing research almost immediately, wondering if Giants had the potential to be search dogs. Strangely enough, it turns out Watson's dad was in the breed ring that day at Westminster! Do you have other pets in addition to Giants? My husband and I also have 2 Wirehaired Pointing Griffons. My husband Jim is a falconer and has a red-tailed hawk and a peregrine falcon. We also have Rupert the rabbit, who is not for hawk food. What do you do with your Giants? I stuck with my goal - Watson has been certified in Human Remains Detection and Wilderness Area Search. We are members of Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue. Cricket - who I adopted from a family in Boise that banned her to the backyard because she was too big and rambunctious - is training in Trailing. I also do obedience with Watson. We are currently working on our UD. Cricket has her CGC. page 3

4 Member Profile (continued) Do you have other hobbies besides dogs? I don t seem to have time for anything else! What is your dog(s) favorite treat and/or toy? Watson loves all treats and the smallest Cuz toys. Cricket loves cheese and will tug on just about anything! What was the last dog-related thing you read? Probably my dog training logs. Anything else you'd like to add. What I love about Giants is that they are eager to learn anything. If there is a club member that you would like to see featured in the Member Profile column, please send their name and contact information to Lori Clark. This class is unique, as each dog has the chance to set the "Time to Beat" for each jump height division. This is different than the current AKC classes (Standard and JWW) where the Standard Course Time (SCT) is set by the course yardage as wheeled by the judge. Additionally, this is different than any other AKC agility classes because there is only one course to set for all dogs to compete. This is a time saver for clubs, judges and exhibitors. Regulations for this class can be found in the Regulations for Agility Trials in Chapter 10. (From the AKC Agility s In The Zone newsletter) page 4
