THE GRRAND GRROWL ISSUE 46 SUMMER 2018 GRRAND s Kennel Open House and Picnic GRRAND was holding its Open House and Picnic from 6 to 8 p.m. July 22 at its kennel in Lyndon. However, due to the extreme heat, GRRAND volunteers have decided to reschedule the picnic/open house at the new kennel from July 22 to Sunday, September 30 from 2-4 p.m. The picnic/open house, which includes food and drinks, will provide an opportunity for GRRAND members and supporters to see the new facility, meet some dogs, get a sense of the work that GRRAND volunteers have been doing, and hear about the current and future facility needs. Watch for your invitation to come via . For RSVP purposes, we request you purchase a $10 ticket in advance by selecting the Purchase Tickets link on the website. Dogs are welcome to join you at the picnic but must remain on leash for their safety. We are excited about this event and look forward to having a great time! That could be the motto for Joe and Kay Krug, long-distance transport volunteers and a recent adopter of a GRRAND golden retriever. Joe and Kay are the bookends of animal welfare. After being matched through an online dating service, Joe knew what he was getting into after seeing the sign on Kay s door: Love Me, Love My Dogs. His biggest test, however, was getting the approval of Kay s shepherd mix. Minutes later, Sketches rolled onto her back for a belly rub. Joe was taken aback that she looked so much like his dog, Gretchen, who had recently died. Sketches approval aside, the couple clearly hit it off and got married. Kay was a music teacher in Jefferson County, while Joe worked as a computer numeric code router operator at Universal Woods, Inc. Now both are retired but were looking for something to keep them busy (and able to continue to buy dog food, Joe said half-jokingly). The couple had been active in greyhound rescue and adopted several over the years. At one point, they had 13 dogs, which could be easily handled on their five-acre Shelbyville property where the dogs have an acre fenced off to do whatever they want dig, run, play, sleep. Down to just six dogs late last year, with nearly all of them seniors, the couple began to look for another possible dog to adopt In December, Joe was perusing the GRRAND website when he noticed an advertisement for a transportation volunteer and he soon joined the GRRAND group of volunteers. Earlier that month, Valentine had been surrendered to a shelter in Columbus, Indiana. She weighed a whopping pounds. Besides being severely overweight, Valentine had a malignant mammary tumor and was around 15 years old, the shelter staff were told. GRRAND was notified and she was brought to Louisville. Hearing about her plight, Joe and Kay offered to foster her. Valentine came home with them on January 3 and was officially adopted in February after someone showed an interest in her and we just couldn t let her go. She is just a darling dog, Kay said. Valentine Overweight continued on page 4

Time May Be Short, But Love Is Great For Those Adopting Terminally-Ill Dogs It s hard enough to say goodbye after caring and loving a pet for years. Imagine the heartache of adopting a terminally-ill dog, knowing that final farewell is likely to come in weeks and months rather than years. Bob and Carol Castle say it s worth it., a lab/golden mix, was surrendered because the previous owners toddler kept trying to climb on the 10-year-old dog with arthritic hips. During s medical exam at intake, it was discovered she had a large mass on her liver that was most likely cancerous. Despite the prognosis, enjoyed life and was still eating. The decision was made to remove the tumor and place into hospice care. Enter the Castles. Since Bob works from home, it would be easy for him to watch. She underwent the surgery, but her recovery was difficult. continues to improve, and the Castles asked to officially adopt her, knowing her time may be short. Why go through the pain of losing a beloved pet so soon? No one explains it better than Carol Castle: I think our story started long before. Bob had a 13-year-old cocker spaniel, Jasper Jones, that he had since he was a puppy. I was wanting another dog, but we knew we d have to get a dog whose activity level matched that of our 13-year-old Mr. Jones (as we liked to call him). In February 2014, we adopted Murphy (or Big Murph) from a family through GRRAND. They were moving and did not think Murphy would tolerate the move. Into our family and in to our hearts, came a 10-yearold, almost 100- pound golden retriever. He was the first golden retriever that either myself or my husband had ever been around, and we fell in love with the breed. The whole idea of Murphy was to have another dog in our home, to ease the inevitable loss that we would soon face with 13-year-old Mr. Jones. We were lucky enough to have Big Murph for two years, when he died suddenly in April 2016 with a hemangiosarcoma. Murphy sealed the deal for Bob and I we were senior Golden people, for life. After we lost Murphy, we adopted Eddie and Sarah through Golden Treasures Rescue out of Ohio in May They were a 10-year-old bonded pair whose owner had died. When they joined the family, we were told they had been in foster care for almost one year. It seems Eddie (Eddie Bug, as I called him) was not healthy and we were warned he may not live long after we adopted him. Not long after we adopted Sarah and Eddie, we lost Mr. Jones in November Sarah and Eddie were there to give us all the love we needed. Sweet Sarah was an easy dog, so loving. She would paw at you whenever you stopped petting her, because she always just wanted more love. We were caught completely off guard when she died after having seizures in July We ve now lost three dogs in about a 15-month period. We debated for a long time about getting a companion for Eddie, but decided he was enjoying being the only dog. And we wanted to give our hearts a break. We knew we d need to adopt a senior to match Eddie s activity level and we just didn t think we could handle the potential loss of two more dogs so soon. continued on page 8 GOLDEN RETRIEVER RESCUE & ADOPTION OF NEEDY DOGS, INC. GRRAND has placed more than 4,200 dogs in Metro Louisville, Lexington, Greater Cincinnati, and surrounding areas. Operating support for GRRAND comes primarily from contributions, a membership of more than 3,500, and an annual fundraising event, The GRRAND Affair. 3 Board Vice President Attends Animal Care Expo in Kansas City photographer courtesy of HSUS World s Largest Educational Conference And Trade Show For People Who Work With, Or Want To Work With, Animals. When Jennifer Smith joined the GRRAND Board of Directors, she didn t get the opportunity to ease into the responsibility of the position she came on as vice president. Although active in the organization since 1998 upon the adoption of her family s first GRRAND golden, Jennifer wanted to accelerate her learning curve as a board member. That s why she attended at her own cost the Animal Care Expo May at Kansas City, Missouri. It is an annual event sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). I m new to the board and thought I would go to the conference to help me get up to speed quickly and find out what others are doing in the industry, Jennifer explained. For me, it was a good way to learn about animal care and be able to talk with professionals. I wanted to understand what is considered a best practice, what are the challenges other groups are seeing and bring back some ideas. The Expo is touted by HSUS as the world s largest educational conference and trade show for people who work with, or want to work with, animals. The expo featured 10 specialty tracks and more than 75 workshops. The event has been sponsored by HSUS for more than 25 years. Jennifer chose two tracks: Volunteers and Fundraising/Marketing. Other tracks included Field Services, Future of Sheltering, Global Animal Issues, Leadership, Reaching Underserved Communities, Expanding Our Reach, Saving Cats and Shelter Medicine. The workshops were rated suitable for all attendees, those new to the field, moderate level or experience or in mid-level leadership positions, and those with extensive experience and those in high-level leadership positions. There were a lot of good ideas shared, Jennifer said. The volunteer situation in general is tight. Turnover is generally high throughout the animal welfare industry. We really appreciate all our volunteers do for GRRAND. Another common theme in the session was developing a volunteer data base to see who is available when extra hands are needed. That is area that we will Jennifer Smith investigate and see if it makes sense for us since we are smaller than many of the groups who were attending, she explained. Many were humane societies or shelters with more paid personnel and volunteers. Jennifer will be putting together some ideas and present to the Board for review. The information Jennifer learned from the fundraising track is already being implemented. A small committee has been formed that will meet in July to start collaborating on ideas and discuss what events and activities to pursue, she said. Grant-writing was a big part of the fundraising track and Jennifer has a volunteer who will focus on grant-writing. The biggest issue with grant-writing is simply getting them vetted to find out which ones GRRAND qualifies for and when are the deadlines. Foundations generally give based on subject and geographic region so you need to look for funders whose interests match your organization s mission, programs, and populations served. PetSmart Charities may have a grant for neuter and spaying one quarter, shelter operations another quarter, so we need to find out what we can apply for and get it on the calendar, Jennifer said. She met with a few grant foundations and learned what type of proposal they prefer to receive. Next year s Animal Care Expo will be April in New Orleans

KRUGS ODYSSEY continued from page 1 I always wanted to get a golden retriever, Joe added. I just wasn t expecting it so quickly. Joe, a Civil War re-enactor, decided to keep the name Valentine, because she was such a sweetheart. But a bit of research found Valentine fits in with some of their other Civil War-themed dog names. Valentine could have been named for German-born August Valentine Kautz, a Union general of the Second Ohio Calvary who fought in Kentucky while tracking Confederate Capt. John Hunt Morgan and his Raiders. Their other dogs that give a nod to the War Between the States include: A beagle-mix named Jennie Wade, the only civilian killed at the Battle of Gettysburg. Jennie the dog was found after being shot through the neck and was heart-worm positive. She is around 10. We were supposed to see the movie Secretariat, but we were early, so we stopped by a shelter to see this pitiful dog. I really didn t want to bring her home, but Joe did. She didn t like me at all, but now she is extremely bonded to me, Kay said. Did they ever see Secretariat? Not until it came out on video, Kay admitted. A rough-coated collie named Rebel, who is five. A former show dog, the Krugs adopted him at the request of the breeder when he was retired from showing. A greyhound/pointer mix named Stonewall after Confederate Gen. Thomas Stonewall Jackson. He had been living with 34 cats and no one wanted him because he was blind. He is at least 10 years old. The other creatively-named dogs in the Krug menagerie were: A Labrador mix named Jack, who was adopted on Halloween after having already been given the first sedation shot to be euthanized. He is now 15. Eight-month-old greyhound sisters named Desert and Sand who were facing a similar fate as Jack s the day after Thanksgiving. They are now 12 and have gone through rally obedience classes. Another greyhound named Smokey who was running the streets of Louisville. A former racer, he is 11 years old. Of our eight dogs, seven are seniors, Kay said. That s the beauty of seniors, they are past the stage of puppy chewing, and they want to please you so much. The weight-loss regimen took some trial and error for food-driven Valentine. She wasn t happy with her initial cottage cheese, yogurt and rice diet. Then Joe and Kay found Natural Balance (and I m not 4 Joe and Kay Krug and Valentine making the name up) Fat Dogs low-calorie dog food with chicken and salmon meal, garbanzo beans, peas and oatmeal. She had a cup in the morning and evening, supplemented by green beans. Six months later, Valentine has slimmed down 31 pounds. She is just three pounds shy of her target weight of 75. Valentine looks and acts much younger now, closer to 10 than the initial assessment of 15. Before we had to help her get up. Now she runs up and down the steps and enjoys walking around the perimeter of the yard, Kay said. She looks like a golden rather than a red, fat pig. She lost more than just a tumor and weight. A dental exam revealed many rotten teeth, all of which have been removed. And more good news for the sweet Valentine. The mammary tumor Valentine was benign, not malignant. Kay and Joe take many of their dogs to nursing homes for visitation, and Valentine is no exception. She just enjoys visiting and they love to see her, Kay said. ROAD TRIP BUDDIES When they aren t taking dogs to nursing homes or enjoying their pooches on their own property, Joe and Kay are the go-to team for long-distance transports for GRRAND. Joe and Valentine at Nursing Home We do a tremendous amount of transports, Joe said. We average around transports a month, but we did five in a week once. And here we were scared we wouldn t have anything to do now that we re retired. The Krugs availability to jump into their van and collect a dog at a moment s notice is what makes them such a valued member of GRRAND s transport team, said Kimberly Ballard, GRRAND s intake coordinator.

continue from page 4 Joe and Kay have been a true blessing to GRRAND. Transports on a same-day basis or weekends are sometimes necessary, as a dog s life could hang in the balance, Kimberly said. Even on short notice, I know I can count on Joe and Kay to drive wherever needed to get a dog to GRRAND. Their addition to the GRRAND transport team has also allowed other longtime transporters who were pulling double duty covering all vet transports in addition to intake transports to take a muchneeded breather and focus on one or the other, Kimberly said. I simply cannot thank all of our GRRAND transporters enough. They work quietly behind the scenes and deserve a lot of credit for saving so many dogs lives, she added. While the dogs benefit having Joe and Kay bring them to GRRAND for second chances at finding that loving home, all that driving has given the couple a new appreciation for Kentucky and Indiana and Kay keeping up her map-reading skills when they get into non-gps territory. They keep track of the stories about each transport and what happened to each. We ve learned so much about the smaller counties, their shelters and vets offices, Kay said, while Joe added the backroads are more scenic with color than the highways they generally drive. Joe always drives, while Kay is the navigator, especially on those backroads when even GPS doesn t know where it is. It s not always accurate, Kay said. I see a lot of the countryside and the backroads have a lot of interesting things I wouldn t see otherwise. At the end of the trip, though, it s less about the scenery and more about the mission: It s always nice to pick up the dog, Joe said. There s a good feeling when I m picking up a dog and taking it to GRRAND and giving it a new lease on life. Just ask Valentine. 6 GRRAND BY THE NUMBERS If it seems GRRAND is busier than ever, that would be because it is. According to a recent GRRAND Rescue Report, 2018 year-to-date numbers ending June 30 tally 127 dogs going through intake compared to 94 for the same period in So far this year, 121 dogs have been adopted, compared to 86 last year through June 30. The total number of dogs who are either being fostered or kenneled are also up: 141 for 2018 compared to 136 for the same period last year. That s a very significant increase, said Jane Sonntag, GRRAND adoption coordinator and board member. I think that is because of the very hard work of many of GRRAND s exceptional volunteers and the improved communication between volunteers. What makes the increase in numbers more remarkable is it comes without a Turkey Dog rescue this past spring that boosted the 2017 numbers. In March, GRRAND had 29 dogs adopted, almost at the level of the record-setting 2005 when the organization adopted out 356 dogs, nearly a dog a day, for the year. Having the kennel has expedited many of these dogs in finding their forever homes, Jane said, which has allowed us to get to know the dogs better prior to placement and made the dogs more available to applications for adoption. Taking on more dogs has come at a cost, because many of the dogs rescued require more than updated vaccines and spay/ neuter surgeries. Our biggest expense is the kennel, said GRRAND President Nina Scott, along with the costs of vet care. During a 10-month span, GRRAND rescued nine heartworm positive dogs, which requires them to go through a three-monthlong treatment, costing an average of nearly $800 per dog. Here are just a few costs GRRAND underwrites: $25 Bag of food for one dog $50 Heartworm and flea preventative for one dog $100 Spay or neuter one dog $250 General vet care for one dog $500 Weeks worth of training for one dog $750 Heartworm treatment for one dog $1000 Emergency vet care for one dog Nina is hoping GRRAND supporters will set record donations in 2018 to go along with intake and adoptions. Your donation will help us continue our work to rescue golden retrievers and other needy dogs, Nina said. Your support makes all the difference for our dogs and our organization. Let s make this a recordbreaking year for GRRAND and golden retrievers in need. You can make a donation by typing into your web browser or go to the website at www. grrand.org and click on the DONATE crown at the top of the page. 8 Hospice Home from page 2 Sarah and Eddie Eddie Bug was the most unique dog we ve ever known. The dog that we were warned may die within a month of bringing him home had lived longer than all his friends. Eddie did not eat dog food. When we went to the grocery, our cart was full of food for Eddie. Eddie ate roast and gravy. Eddie ate meatballs, buttered toast, cheese. I spent Sundays cooking chicken and roast in the crockpot for his meals each week. During the time we were lucky enough to have Eddie, I cooked more for Eddie than I did for my husband and myself. You d think the dog would have a weight issue, but we struggled to keep weight on him. In April of 2018, after many heartbreaking discussions, we finally decided it was time to let Eddie go. He was hardly awake most days, probably asleep 22 hours of the day. He barely ate. And he d lost strength in his hind legs and could no longer squat to go to the bathroom. We would have hand-fed Eddie and cleaned up bathroom messes for the rest of our lives but couldn t stand the ashamed look he would get on his face every time we had to clean him up. When he no longer had the energy or desire to go on his daily walk, we knew we were being selfish and it was time to let him be with Sarah again. We lost Eddie on April 6, 2018 and on the morning of April 7th Bob and I sat on our couch in tears, filling out an adoption application for GRRAND. We d lost Murphy, Jasper Jones, Sarah, and Eddie in a twoyear period. Maybe we weren t cut out to be senior Golden people for life We decided that it was time to adopt younger. Not puppy young, but 7 or 8 years old young. To this point, we d never adopted a dog less than 10-years old, so 7 or 8 would be a puppy to us. I tell people all the time senior dogs are where it s at! They ve been there, done that. Don t require a lot to be impressed just love. We spoke with Jane Sonntag the next week and told her we were interested in another bonded pair but to shoot a little younger. As we were waiting for just the right dog pair to come in to our lives, I spotted on the GRRAND website. an almost 10-year-old, golden mix, that was needing a hospice foster home so her final days would not be spent in the kennel. Bob and I talked it over and decided we were the best place for. We don t have kids at home, we don t have stairs, Bob works from home, and our house is calm. And.. we d been down this road before. I would be remiss if I did not mention Dr. Kendra Healy with Lap of Love. Lap of Love is a mobile veterinary hospice service that consults on terminally ill animals and provides in-home euthanasia. While some of our pet loss has occurred as an emergent situation in the vet ER, some of our pet loss has occurred in our home that saved Mr. Jasper Jones and Eddie a trip in the car to the vet s office, which they both hated. One week after we lost Eddie, we were driving to Louisville to pick up from GRRAND. I was expecting a sick, pitiful dog. What we got was a full of life, full of energy, love bug! is the sweetest! She loves being loved on and would let you rub her belly all day. She runs in the back yard! She plays with her toys! She is an almost 10-year-old puppy! She s the most active dog Bob and I have ever had (except for Mr. Jones in his younger years, of course). Bob and I talked all time about and our conversation typically included, This dog can t be that sick; I just don t think the labs are right, and I just don t think the report was right. Thanks to the amazing people at GRRAND, we were able to take in to Metropolitan Veterinary Specialists to meet Dr. Benjamin Neat. Dr. Neat confirmed a 10-cm mass on s liver. Dr. Neat felt with the great quality of life that currently had, he could remove the tumor and add another year, maybe two to her life. The wonderful people at GRRAND allowed us to proceed ahead with s surgery. Dr. Neat phoned us from the operating room and our hearts sank. He felt the tumor was too large and the surgery too difficult, he recommended stopping the surgery. We agreed. Not 30 minutes later, Dr. Neat phoned from the operating room again Heart sinks He is having difficulty getting the tumor to stop bleeding and feels like he must proceed ahead with removal or he may lose her. Thanks to the blessed hands of Dr. Neat, pulled through! We are now four weeks out from s surgery and she is back to her old self, except for her little shaved belly. She is running in the back yard, playing with toys, goes on her twice daily walks terrorizing the neighborhood cat. s tumor was a hepatocellular carcinoma. Dr. Neat couldn t remove it all

These tumors typically are not responsive to chemotherapy. We don t know what time has left. What we do know, the people at GRRAND and all their generous donors, have given her a longer life, than she had four weeks ago. Our friends joke with us all time and call our house, Castle Doggie Hospice. When I told one of my friends that we were going to foster, her response, was Oh Carol, not again. My thought: Why not again? We ve hit the doggie jackpot every time we ve adopted a senior. Even a senior with health issues. We ve since adopted because she stole our hearts! We would adopt, and Murphy, and Sarah, and Eddie a million times over. The loss you suffer is nothing compared to the joy that each of our senior dogs have given us over the years. The best part of my day is coming home to our sweet with her tail wagging and the thumping sound of her tail as it hits against a cabinet door with the excitement of just seeing us. Jasper, Murphy, Sarah, Eddie, and now have each given us more than we could ever have given them. Their unconditional love is more than any vet bill, mess cleaning up, special diet, pill crushing, ramp building, and the list goes on. A bad day can be washed away with their excitement of just seeing us come through the door and they never grow tired of it. It s like a ticker tape parade, every time we walk through the door. We pray that we have a long time left with. But, if we lost tomorrow, it will have been worth every tear shed. We re the lucky ones!
