3 From the President... Welcome to the Saluki Club of Canada s 2015 National Specialty. This weekend has come together due to a lot of dedicated work. A huge thank you goes out to our show chairperson Sandra Gahan for bringing together a committee comprised of experienced and new enthusiastic members from Canada and the United States. Making these preparations such a positive experience is how our clubs can grow. We are so fortunate to have Sibelle De-Leyn Benoit and Kevin Carleson with us this year. I have heard how excited the exhibitors have been in anticipation of this show, based on this panel of judges. Fundraising is a constant challenge and this year is no exception. It enables us to engage foreign judges from a distance. Your support in terms of entries and catalogue advertisements are much appreciated. This year our online auction has exceeded expectation. I want to thank all those who have donated so many beautiful items, people who have so generously bid and especially members who have spearheaded the whole operation. My hat is off to you for the sheer load of work that is not over until weeks after the show, making sure all items go to the highest bidder who may not be present here today. This year s event is bitter sweet. We have a wonderful entry of hounds, but are missing the man who has kept our ring running at peak efficiency. Bob Boxma passed away on New Year s Day, and our club will never be the same without his love and enthusiasm. We are dedicating this year s national in memory of Bob. We know he is smiling on us today, and enjoying all the beautiful hounds. Finally, thank you to the Hamilton Kennel Club and Diana Edwards for accommodating so many of our requests. 4 the Saluki Club of Canada s 50th Anniversary Specialty in Winnipeg in J. Robert (Bob) Boxma SALUKI CLUB OF CANADA NATIONAL SPECIALTY Bob Boxma showed his Boxer at the Ottawa Kennel Club show in 1959, and so began his love of showing purebred dogs. He has owned and bred Miniature and Standard Wire-haired Dachshunds, Pugs, Brussels Griffons and his first love, the Saluki. Bob obtained his first Saluki from Don Wieden in Bob was studying in England and met Don and brought Ch. Sedeki Wahed back to Canada with him. He also owned Can. & Am. Ch. Sekeki Fenjan and his most famous dog, MBIS Can. & Am. Ch. Elana Gold Ruler of Boxwyn, a.k.a. Jordie. Bob hosted the Saluki Club of Canada s 30th Anniversary Specialty at his place in 1992, which was judged by Ken Allan. Bob judged the Futurity at the Saluki Club of America National Specialty and has judged numerous Sweepstakes,including In his 28 years of Saluki ownership, Bob bred three litters. The last litter was a singleton puppy, Can. & Fin. Ch. Boxwyn Valentino ( Tino ), sired by MBIS Can. & Am. Ch. Elana Gold Ruler of Boxwyn out of my wonderful bitch from Lin Hawkyard, Ch. Lorrequer Firuza Dajii. Since his retirement, he and his spouse Marcello Tulipano moved to Orillia where they lived with a Pixie Bob cat (Tabitha) and a great group-winning Standard Wirehaired Dachshund (Kurt). Kurt was the sire of a litter of puppies last summer. Bob and Marcello had recently started showing two of Kurt s puppies, Charlie and Sam. Bob was a founding member of Best Friends/ Meilleurs Amis a nationally registered Canadian charity, formed to support and provide assistance to members of the dog fancy who were HIV/AIDS positive and requiring emergency financial assistance. Through generous support, Best Friends/ Meilleurs Amis raised funds and distributed assistance to individuals who needed it most. Bob was a life member of The Canadian Kennel Club (where he served as legal counsel for many, many years) and the Saluki Club of Canada, and a member of the Saluki Club of America. Bob gave freely of his time to his friends and fellow dog lovers, and always volunteered as the SCOC s specialty ring steward. This year s show will be a little less special without him. 5 Specialty Judge... SIBYLLE DE-LEYN BENOIT I live in a small town called Zwevezele, near Bruges in Belgium with my husband, two children and my five Saluki girls. I grew up with Salukis, Afghans and Lhasa Apsos, but very early on it was clear to me that Salukis were my favourites. When I was six years old we started going to shows and I was immediately hooked. I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel with my mother all over Europe to see different Salukis and I believe it was the best learning school I could have gotten. Being involved in the breeding and selection of puppies all my life, I took over the kennel Har Kala Rachi completely in To introduce new blood in our lines I imported a Swedish-bred smooth bitch and she started a very successful breeding for me, producing multiple specialty BIS winners and all-breed BIS winners. In just a few litters I have exported Salukis in over 12 different countries. When selecting I don t look at colour or coat type but construction and movement and believe that is my strong point. I also make a point of it that my dogs have their lure coursing licence, even though I don t have time to compete because of my young family, I believe it is important that the Saluki can still do what it was created for. In 2006 I became involved in the Belgian Saluki Club first as secretary and a few years later as president. I m currently still president of the SCB. I believed I was ready to start my judging career a few years ago and following the strict rules in Belgium I became an international FCI judge in I enjoy very much meeting the owners and dogs in different countries and have been fortunate to have been invited to judge big specialty shows in Europe. 6 Sweepstakes Judge... KEVIN CARLSON Thank you, Saluki Club of Canada, for inviting me to judge sweepstakes at the Canadian National. I am so very honoured and respect the invitation to come and judge your Salukis. Before I owned Salukis, I started watching Salukis run in the lure coursing field in the early 90s. My first Saluki came into my life June That is about 25 years ago. I ve shared my life with Salukis ever since. My judging philosophy is simple: Hunter. I think Salukis are most beautiful when they are running and hunting. I tend to emphasize overall strength, body, shoulders, rears and feet, before other things like heads (I appreciate a very nice head, but ultimately, I care more about other things). I try to emphasize the things that I think help make the Saluki a good, speedy and powerful hunter. My ideal Saluki: It must have that outline that makes you look and think that this is unmistakenly, a Saluki. It is moderate and balanced. Powerful hindquarters and loin. Moderately angled both front and rear. Fit. Movement balanced and efficient. Clean coming and going. Temperament can be aloof and reserved, to outgoing. Currently I own or co-own eight Salukis and have owned several others over the years. Dawn and I have bred five Saluki litters over the years. Dawn and I don t take breeding lightly, so we don t breed often. We occasionally show (conformation), play agility, obedience and lure course. I still hope to get a few Salukis back to the open field. Foundation bloodlines: My mentors were Don and the late Marie Adams (the Aries. Salukis). This line was heavily influenced by MiMi Carlyle s kennel (Canem-Dei Salukis). I (we) maintain a deep sense of our roots and where our dogs came from. Judging Salukis: I ve been active in lure coursing for all of my time in Salukis. I m an AB ASFA and AKC judge and most enjoy judging Salukis when I don t happen to be running any. I did have the pleasure and honour of judging the SCOA ASFA National Specialty Trial (Pyramid Cup) in I ve judged a few other Saluki sweepstakes. I feel honoured that I was invited to judge Saluki Club of America sweepstakes in I LOVE Salukis. I m passionate about this breed. They will have a place in my house for as long as I m capable of caring for them. They will have a place in my heart forever. 8 The Elana Perpetual Trophy The Saluki Club of Canada offers a perpetual trophy, in honour and remembrance of Nell Hyde, to be awarded at our national specialties. We thank Carole Adley for her efforts in this project. The inscription reads: The Elana Trophy in memory of Nell Hyde, Elana Salukis for Top Show/Lure Coursing Saluki Nell Hyde was a Saluki owner, breeder and exhibitor for 35 years. Her prefix, Elana, is in many pedigrees, and her line was noted for athletic ability, beauty and wonderful temperament. Versatility was important to Nell, and she both showed and lure coursed her dogs with great success. This trophy recognizes the Saluki that has proven conformation to the breed standard and superiority in the lure coursing field during the year. Winner for 2014 CH. 9 Champions & Championship Points... Section A dog awarded Winners at a conformation show shall be credited with a number of championship points (ranging from 0 to 5) and the number of championship points credited to a dog awarded Winners shall be provided hereunder. Section The schedule to be employed in the determination of the number of points awarded Winners shall be as follows: Dogs Competing* 1 2 Points Allocated 0 *includes the dog awarded Winners or more 4 5 In counting the number of eligible dogs in competition, a dog that is disqualified, dismissed, excused or ordered from the ring by the judge shall not be included in the calculation for championship points. Section If a Dog awarded Winners was also awarded Best of Breed then all dogs competing in the breed, including Specials Only, shall be included in the calculation for championship points. Section If a Dog awarded Winners is also awarded Best of Opposite Sex to the Best of Breed, then all dogs of the same sex including those competing for Specials Only shall be included in the total. Section If a Dog awarded Winners is also awarded Best of Winners, then all dogs defeated directly or indirectly in the breed shall be included in the total. Section If a dog is awarded Winners only, then all the dogs of the same sex in the class competition shall be included in the total. Section The number of championship points to be credited to a dog awarded Winners shall be determined by the highest award earned and calculated as per this section. Clarification: Example of directly or indirectly defeating: If the Winners Bitch is awarded BOS but not Best of Winners, the Best of Winners Male shall be deemed to have indirectly defeated the Specials Bitches, and is thus entitled to add them to the number of dogs and bitches defeated. Section A dog may not be credited with more than 5 championship points a single show. Section In order for a dog to be recognized as a champion and its owner provided with a Championship certificate, the dog must: (a) earn at least 10 championship points under at least 3 judges; and, (b) be individually registered in the records of the CKC or have an ERN; and (c) have earned at least one 2-point win either at the breed or group level. The Saluki Club of Canada is pleased to present prizes and rosettes for BB, BOS, BP, BOW, WD, WB, RWD, RWB Best BBE A rosette will be offered given for AOM (one per every 10 entries competing for BB). Flat ribbons and a trophy will be offered for first in each class. A rosette and prize will be offererd for Best in Youth Sweepstakes, Best Opposite Sex in Youth Sweepstakes, Best in Veteran Sweepstakes, Best Opposite Sex in Veteran Sweepstakes, Best in Breeder Sweepstakes. Zenovia Regular Classes Divided by sex: Junior Puppy (6-9 Months), Senior Puppy (9-12 months), Months, Canadian Bred, Bred by Exhibitor, Open and Veterans (divided into 7-9 Year and 10+ Year classes). Specials Only. Sexually Altered Classes This is a Regular specialty class judged after Best in Specialty. Awards of Merit Presentation(s) will be made after Best of Breed judging. One Award per every 10 entries competing for Best of Breed may be offered. Best Bred by Exhibitor Presentation will be made after Best of Breed judging. Eligible Salukis must be breeder/owner-handled and not defeated by another BBE entry. Best Veteran Presentation will be made after Best of Breed judging. Non-Regular Classes Ex hibition Only, Brace, Stud Dog, Brood Bitch. Unofficial Classes Coursing Hound (Salukis pointed in CKC, AKC, ASFA lure coursing) Youth Sweep Classes The following classes are offered for dogs and bitches: Junior Puppy (6-9 Month Class), Senior Puppy (9-12 Month Class) and Month. Veteran Sweeps Classes Classes offered for dogs and bitches: 7-10 Years, 10+ Years. Breeder Sweeps Classes Divided by sex, one class only in each sex. Each Saluki must be handled by its breeder but doesn t have to be owned by its breeder. Procedures & Awarding of Stakes... Salukis entering sweepstakes classes must be entered in Regular or Exhibition Only. First place in each class will compete for Best in Youth Sweep s or for Best in Veteran Sweeps. Best of Opposite Sex will be chosen for Youth and Veteran Sweeps only. Prize monies will be awarded for each age class as follows: First place 25% of stake monies collected for that class Second place 20% of stake monies collected for that class Third place 15% of stake monies collected for that class Fourth place 10% of stake monies collected for that class Best in Sweepstakes 5% of stake monies collected for all classes The remainder of the entry fees will be retained to defray the costs. &**> 18 SALUKI CLUB OF CANADA NATIONAL SPECIALTY
