3 Specialty Judge... 4 SALUKI CLUB OF CANADA NATIONAL SPECIALTY KARIN HEDBERG, SWEDEN My first dog was a silver-coloured dwarf Poodle bitch, born in I had my first contact with Salukis in the late 1960s. I bought my first Saluki in 1971 and bred my first Saluki litter in My most recent Saluki litter, my ninth homebred one, was born in April I have bred and owned several national and international show champions, and most of them have also enjoyed and placed well at lure coursing. Many of the Salukis I bred were used for breeding by other breeders. I am presently owned by three Saluki ladies, International Beauty Champion Kirman Eudora (ggg daughter of Ch. Kashmanis Pamina), six years old; Swedish & Norwegian Show Champion SBIS Amiyat Dantooine, three years old; and puppy Kashmanis Zaquira Zahab from my most recent litter. Since 1995 I have also owned and bred a number of litters of Shetland Sheepdogs, including one homebred champion. One Sheltie bitch lives in our pack right now. I have also owned a Whippet. My first judging appointment ever was at the Swedish Saluki Club Northern Section s Open Show, in I was licensed to judge Salukis at National/International (FCI) championship show level by the Swedish KC in In 2009, I was licensed to judge all breeds in FCI Group 10 (Sighthounds). I also judge several breeds in FCI Group 1 (Sheepdogs and cattle dogs) and 5 (Spitz and primitive types, including the so-called Mediterranean breeds). I m licensed to judge Tibetan Spaniels and am presently studying additional breeds in FCI Group 9 (Companion and Toy Dogs). I have judged Salukis (and other breeds) at national and FCI international championship level in Sweden, Norway and Finland, including the prestigious Skokloster Championship Summer Show 2008 in Sweden and the Finnish Saluki Specialties in June I have also judged outside the Nordic countries several times: the US (Lompoc/Santa Barbara, 2004), Belgium (Brussels Dog shows 2008 and 2017), the UK (KC Championship Show Richmond 2009, Northern Saluki Club Championship Show 2015), Austria (Tull n 2011) and several times in Germany (VDH CACIB Bundessieger Dortmund 2012, Saluki CAC Jahresausstellung Gelsenkirchen 2014, CACIB & CAC Nürnberg January 2017, and other shows). I judged the French Saluki Club Championship Specialty FALAPA in 2016, the Sighthound & Sheltie Championship Specialties in Czech Republic 2016, the Saluki Club Inc (NSW) specialty in Sydney, Australia, in May In April 2018 I judged Salukis and other breeds at the Italian Sighthound Club shows in Padenghe, Italy. I am married to Jonny Hedberg, Chairman of the Swedish Saluki Club, also a lure coursing judge and Swedish Kennel Club delegate in the FCI Commission for Sighthound Races. During the years, both of us have served in various functions on various Saluki/Sighthound/Kennel Club committees. Sweepstakes Judge... TENA WARSHAW, united states In 1976, I joined our local 4-H dog project, training and showing the family Boxer(s). Salukis came into my life in 1978, and I haven t been without at least one since. After 4-H I moved into AKC conformation and became completely hooked on the whole dog world. Eventually I became adept enough at handling that I began to take on client dogs, with some success. I ve shown several breeds to titles, handled a Scottish Deerhound to a top-10 ranking, won a couple of groups from the classes, and had a lovely specialty BOS win with my own German Shorthair bitch. Saluki specific: I ve owned a few, been owned by all of them, shown a bunch (mostly mine and/or my sister s, but some were owned by others), finished most of them, bred/co-bred sparingly (less than a handful of litters, though one of those was allchampion), and am trying to spend more time coursing. Judging: I started out judging conformation/showmanship for 4-H, then was also asked to do many all-breed matches (every group, at least once, Best in Match on multiple occasions, and Junior Showmanship). I have been blessed to have been asked to judged Saluki Sweepstakes in Arizona, California, Florida and Oregon. I ve also judged a German Shorthaired Pointer sweepstakes. My husband and I currently have two Salukis, both smooth, and are beginning the search for a bigger piece of property so they can have more room to run. SALUKI CLUB OF CANADA NATIONAL SPECIALTY 5

4 The Elana Perpetual Trophy The Saluki Club of Canada offers a perpetual trophy, in honour and remembrance of Nell Hyde, to be awarded at our national specialties. We thank Carole Adley for her efforts in this project. The inscription reads: The Elana Trophy in memory of Nell Hyde, Elana Salukis for Top Show/Lure Coursing Saluki Nell Hyde was a Saluki owner, breeder and exhibitor for 35 years. Her prefix, Elana, is in many pedigrees, and her line was noted for athletic ability, beauty and wonderful tem-perament. Versatility was important to Nell, and she both showed and lure coursed her dogs with great success. This trophy recognizes the Saluki that has proven conformation to the breed standard and superiority in the lure coursing field during the year. Winner for 2016 CH. 6 CKC Breed Standard for the Saluki... Origin and Purpose: The Saluki is one of the oldest known breeds of dogs. It has existed, virtually unchanged, for many thousands of years. It was originally bred by the Arab tribes men for bringing down game, and was considered a sacred gift of god by the tribesmen. In Arabic, an ordinary dog is called kelb, while the Saluki is El Hor, The Noble one. General Appearance: The whole appearance of this breed should give an impression of grace and symmetry and of great speed and endurance coupled with strength and activity to enable it to kill a gazelle or other quarry over deep sand or rocky mountains. The expression should be dignified and gentle with deep, faithful, far-seeing eyes. Size: Dogs should average in height from 23 to 28 inches (58 to 71 cm), and bitches may be considerably smaller, this being very typical of the breed. Coat: Smooth and of a soft silky texture, slight feather on the legs, feather at the back of the thighs and sometimes with slight wooly feather on the thigh and shoulder. Colour: White, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle, and tan tricolour (white, black and tan), black and tan, or any of the aforementioned colours and white. Head: Long and narrow, skull moderately wide between the ears, not domed, stop not pronounced, the whole showing great quality. Nose black or liver; teeth strong and level; eyes dark to hazel and bright; large and oval, but not prominent; ears long and covered with long silky hair hanging close to the skull and mobile. Neck: Long, supple, and well muscled. Forequarters: Shoulders sloping and set well back, well muscled without being coarse. Forelegs straight and long from the elbow to the knee. Loin and Back: Back fairly broad, muscles slightly arched over loin. Chest deep and moderately narrow. Hindquarters: Strong, hip bones set well apart and stifle moderately bent, hocks low to the ground, showing galloping and jumping power. Feet: Of moderate length, toes long and well arched, not splayed out, but at the same time not cat-footed: the whole being strong and supple and well feathered between the toes. Tail: Long, set on low and carried naturally in a curve, well feathered on the un derside with long silky hair, not bushy. The Smooth Variety: In this variety the points should be the same with the ex ception of the coat, which has no feathering. Champions & Championship Points... Section A dog awarded Winners at a conformation show shall be credited with a number of championship points (ranging from 0 to 5) and the number of championship points credited to a dog awarded Winners shall be provided hereunder. Section The schedule to be employed in the determination of the number of points awarded Winners shall be as follows: Dogs Competing* or more Points Allocated *includes the dog awarded Winners In counting the number of eligible dogs in competition, a dog that is disqualified, dismissed, excused or ordered from the ring by the judge shall not be included in the calcu lation for championship points. Section If a Dog awarded Winners was also awarded Best of Breed then all dogs competing in the breed, including Specials Only, shall be included in the calculation for championship points. Section If a Dog awarded Winners is also awarded Best of Opposite Sex to the Best of Breed, then all dogs of the same sex including those competing for Specials Only shall be included in the total. Section If a Dog awarded Winners is also awarded Best of Winners, then all dogs de feated dir ectly or indirectly in the breed shall be included in the total. Section If a dog is awarded Winners only, then all the dogs of the same sex in the class compe tition shall be included in the total. Section The number of championship points to be credited to a dog awarded Win ners shall be determined by the highest award earned and calculated as per this section. Clarification: Example of directly or indirectly defeating: If the Winners Bitch is awarded BOS but not Best of Winners, the Best of Winners Male shall be deemed to have indirectly defeated the Specials Bitches, and is thus entitled to add them to the number of dogs and bitches defeated. Section A dog may not be credited with more than 5 championship points a single show. Section In order for a dog to be recognized as a champion and its owner provided with a Championship certificate, the dog must: (a) earn at least 10 championship points under at least 3 judges; and, (b) be individually registered in the records of the CKC or have an ERN; and (c) have earned at least one 2-point win either at the breed or group level. Youth Sweepstakes Classes The following classes are offered for dogs and bitches: Junior Puppy (6-9 Month Class), Senior Puppy (9-12 Month Class) and Month. Veteran Sweepstakes Classes The following classes are offered for both dogs and bitches: 7-9 Years, 9-12 Years and 12+ Years. Breeder Sweepstakes Classes Divided by sex, one class only in each sex. Each Saluki must be handled by its breeder but doesn t have to be owned by its breeder. Please note: All Salukis entered in Non-reg ular, Unofficial and Sweeps classes must also be entered in one of the Regular classes or Exhibition Only. Zayda hopes that the specialty is joyous. Prize monies will be awarded for each age class as follows: First place 25% of stake monies collected for that class Second place 20% of stake monies collected for that class Third place 15% of stake monies collected for that class Fourth place 10% of stake monies collected for that class Best in Sweepstakes 5% of stake monies collected for all classes In the event that we do not get enough entries to distribute the required 75%, the difference will be awarded to the Best in Sweeps winner.
