Page 3 Static Judging Reminder 4-H static judging will be on Wednesday, July 25. Each member must report to exhibit check-in at the front lobby of the Cass County Community Center. Assigned club judging times are listed on the next page. If you have a conflict with your club s judging time, please check-in and participate in exhibits judging as close to your club s judging time as possible. Everyone must be checked in by 2:30 PM or you will not be allowed to go through conference judging. After checking in, fill out your 4-H Exhibits Building entry form and entry tags for each project, receive a sticker with a number, then proceed into the fair exhibit waiting area. Do you want to make the process faster? Pick up your tags in advance at the extension office! There will be separate lines for the different project areas. Once a 4-H member starts the judging process, they will rotate to a different judge for each project area and participate in a conference judging experience with the various judge(s). When an exhibitor waits in line, the smallest number takes precedence in the line. For example, a 4-H member may go to a photography judge for their photos, a food and nutrition judge for their muffins and an Ag and Natural resources judge with their poster on water conservation. Wait in each of the project area lines until it is time to be judged in each area. Don t forget to shake the judge s hand, tell them your name and smile while meeting with the judge. We hope each member can complete the judging process in a timely manner. Please be patient on the day of exhibits judging, we have many great 4-H exhibits to be judged on July 25. Remember written goals and explanations are encouraged for any 4-H static exhibit at the Cass County Fair and required at the Iowa State Fair. The exhibitor should respond to each of the following questions on each of their projects: 1. What did you plan to learn or do? (What was your exhibit goal(s)?) 2. What steps did you take to learn or do this? 3. What were the most important things you learned? When deciding which class your exhibit should fit, please think of your goal for the exhibit. Please see fairbook pages for class descriptions and learning objective related to your exhibit goals. If you have questions about what class your exhibit should fit into, please contact the Extension Office. Don t forget to incorporate the design principles into your visual arts, sewing, home improvement, etc. exhibits! When it comes to Food & Nutrition exhibits, please make sure you are following the proper cooking instructions and remember to check out the approved exhibits food guide. When preparing for county fair, please remember to do your own work. If you are working on a project with someone else, make sure you are crediting others for what effort they put in to your project. If you are creating a project that you use pictures or quotes that others created or developed, check the copyrights and give them credit. A great way to do this is by including this information in your project write-up. Please contact your club leaders or the Extension Office if you have questions about copyright and project write-up. For more information, and resources on food safety, design, copy write and more, visit our Extension Fair Resources Webpage. 3

Interview Workshop Page 5 Prepare Before You Come to Fair Want to be more prepared before you come to Static Judging Day? Stop by the Extension Office and pick up static entry tags and entry sheet (4-H & Clover Kids), photography display forms, food preservation labels, and poster contest forms. Fill these items out before you arrive at fair and the check-in process should move quickly for you! Clover Kids at the Cass County Fair This year, our Clover Kids will have three great opportunities to be involved at the Cass County Fair. Clover Kids will have the option to participate in the Clover Kids Showcase, the Clover Kids Animal Show and the Clover Kids Best of Iowa. For the Clover Kids animal show and Best of Iowa, you must enter through your leader by July 3. Clover Kids can bring a maximum of 5 static exhibits to fair and no pre entry required. All events are non-competitive and provide an opportunity for the Clover Kid to tell about their project to a caring adult. Please see the Clover Kids section of the fairbook on pages for specific event information. If you have any questions about Clover Kids events at the Cass County Fair, please contact the Extension Office or your leader. Looking For Something? Get yourself ready for the fair and other leadership opportunities at our interview workshop on July 9 from 6:30-8:00 PM at the Cass County Community Center. There will be a 101 session from 6:30-7:30 for junior and intermediate youth to gain skills and confidence for conference judging. In the other half of the community center, from 6:30-8:00, there will be a 202 session for senior level youth to focus on leadership and job interview skills. We are excited to have a panel of professionals from Cass County to share their expertise on interviewing and communication skills. We will have sample interview questions and mock interviewing opportunities, and there will be opportunity for group and individual interviewing, along with gaining insight from your peers. We hope you consider joining us for this awesome opportunity! Please RSVP to the Extension Office by July 5 if you plan to attend! State Fair Exhibitor Information The 2018 Iowa State Fair exhibitor livestock information is now available online at If you are planning to exhibit 4-H livestock at the 2018 Iowa State Fair, please visit the website for information related to your project(s). All State Fair exhibitors must be FSQA/YQCA certified and have their animals ID ed in 4-H Online by May 15. After June 1, families make their State Fair livestock entries. All State Fair livestock entries are done online, and due by July 1. Please contact the Extension Office if you have questions about entering your livestock for the Iowa State Fair. Are you looking for forms and documents related to County Fair? Check out the Extension Website for the downloadable files and information. We are still adding things, so check back often! 5

Livestock/Small Animal Project Members Please be sure that you read the specific rules for your livestock species in the fairbook to make sure you are meeting all show and health requirements before you get to the fair! Don t forget to look over the 4-H uniform requirement also! Exhibitor Numbers Exhibitor numbers for all 4-H & FFA livestock/small animal events will be located in the Extension Office during county fair. Please remember to pick them up during fair office hours before your show. 4-H & FFA exhibitors have separate numbers. You will have ONE number for all livestock species. Please keep your exhibitor number for the whole fair. You may need it for multiple shows and the livestock sale! FSQA/YQCA Any youth planning to exhibit swine, beef, sheep, dairy (both dairy cattle and dairy goat), meat goat, and/or rabbits at the Cass County Fair must have a current FSQA certification. Check your 4-H Online profile, or call the Extension Office to check your status. All Exhibitors must be FSQA or YQCA certified by July 1 in order to participate at Fair. Disclosure Statements All livestock exhibitors are required to complete a Livestock Animal Care and Management Disclosure Statement, to track any medication or other treatments given to animals while they are under your care. They are available online: in the Fair Forms & Resources section or by stopping in the Extension Office. It is the 4-H ers responsibility to return the disclosure statement to the fair veterinarian at weigh-in at the fair in order for your animals to be allowed to show. Beef Carcass To participate in the beef carcass program youth must have weighed in calves in December, enter them with your leaders by July 3 and bring the calves and an Animal Care and Management Disclosure Statement to the scalehouse on July 16 between 7:00 PM-7:30 PM. Swine Exhibitors-Withdrawal Notice Due to packer requirements, there is a withdrawal period of no less than 14 days prior to harvest for all feed and water tetracycline class antibiotics for the swine project. This is different than the standard FDA regulations. Please remove any tetracycline ingredients from feed and water by July 13 and be aware of all other mandatory withdrawal times for products you may be feeding. Please include this information on your Swine Disclosure Statement that you bring to Swine Check-in on July 26. Premise ID-Required for Swine All swine exhibitors must have a premise ID number. If you do not have a Premise ID number for the farm where your hogs are being cared for you will need to apply for the number immediately! You will only have to do this if you are a new exhibitor or if you have a new location for keeping your hogs. The form can be found on the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) website at: Your quickest response will be by faxing the completed application to and write RUSH across the top. We will assist you in faxing the form from the Extension office if needed. You should receive a phone call from IDALS a couple days after they receive the application with your assigned number. You can also call to find out if a number has been assigned or to find out your number if you have forgotten. No hogs will be allowed to unload at the fairgrounds until it has been verified they have a Premise ID number on the Swine Care and Management Disclosure Statement submitted when the hogs arrive. In other words, if you do not have a Premise ID you will not be allowed to show. 6 Page 6

Page 7 County Fair Planning Are you anxious for county fair? County Fair is an exciting time, but can also be very stressful. The best way to reduce stress is being prepared in advance. Here are a few tips for having a positive fair experience: 1. Get your fairbook from your leader and read it. Mark the activities you plan to participate in and know the rules. 2. Work on your exhibits NOW. It doesn t matter if it s showing your animal or giving a working exhibit, the more you practice, the better prepared you ll be. Poultry Information Attention Poultry Exhibitors: All poultry, excluding Market Broilers, that are being exhibited at the Cass County Fair must have a current Pullorum- Typhoid Test. Testing will be offered, free of charge, by authorized testers on Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 7:00 AM-10:00 AM at the Fairgrounds. All birds, including the Hy-lines, need to be tested. The only exception is the market broilers do not need to be tested; please do not bring them to testing. Birds not brought in on Saturday, July 21 will not be allowed to show at the fair. Please have the testing form filled out when you arrive for testing. The form will be posted soon on the Cass County Extension website in the County Fair Forms & Resources page, or available to pick up from the Extension Office. Due to changes at the state level, if you have NPIP papers for your birds, we can no longer accept them as proof of Pullorum free birds. All birds must be at testing on July 21 from 7:00 AM- 10 AM. If you have question about the Pullorum-Typhoid Test, please call Melissa Johnson at Find out what your fair assignments are and write them down. Know where you should report for fair set-up and cleanup day; know where your club is in charge of grounds pick up; What other fair activities have you signed up to help with? 4. Watch your mail for work schedules and judging schedules. Read them carefully and keep them in a safe place. 5. Carefully read this newsletter, it contains many valuable tips and reminders. 6. Call our office with your questions. There is no such thing as a silly question. Remember, Fair is about FUN! Make the most of it! Swimming at the Cass County Fair Youth Council will be hosting an open swim night at the Sunnyside Swimming Pool on Monday, July 30 from 8:00 PM 9:30 PM after the Grand Champion Beef Selection. Swimming will be free and the concession stand will be open if you want to purchase snack with your own money. Please contact the extension office if you plan on attending, or RSVP in the office during fair, so we can get a count together. Registration will close Saturday, July 28. Swimming is open to any Cass County 4-H members in grades Gather up your 4-H friends and cool down to wrap up the 2018 Cass County Fair! 7

Page 8 Fair Preparation Day and Clean Up Day Be sure to mark Wednesday, July 25 on your calendar as set-up day for county fair. NEW! Everyone meets at the outdoor show-ring at 6 PM for directions. When your club has finished with the work in your area, the entire club should report to a designated volunteer in the scalehouse. If there is additional work to be done, you will be directed where to go. If there is no more work to be done, EACH member of the club will need to sign the attendance sheet for your club at the scalehouse. If you aren't present to sign the sheet, you won't be counted as being there. As in the past, all 4-H clubs and FFA chapters must have 50% of their members and leaders actively participate and sign the attendance sheet to receive premium money. The same procedure will be followed for Clean-up Day on August 1. Please read page 10 of your fairbook for club assignments and come prepared with equipment to get the work done quickly! Fair Exhibit Copyright Information As we prepare for county fair, and finalize our static exhibits, please be aware of copyright related to your exhibits. What is copyright? A copyright and/or a trademark are legal methods used by artisits, photographers, writers and others to protect their original and creative works. Protected items may range from professional photography and books to music, sport logo insignias, corporate and brand name logos to art designs. It is important to remember the idea itself cannot receive a copyright. The expression of an idea is what is copyrighted. It is the responsibility of individual 4-Her s to be aware of copyright/trademark regulations when developing 4-H exhibits and communication activities for county and state fairs. 4-Her s are encouraged to create their own original work and illustrations so they can avoid using copyrighted and/ or trademarked material. If you are using the source ( photograph, painting) to create a similar design, you must ask permission before you try to duplicate the original and you would not call it an original design. If you have questions about if your exhibit fits the copyright rules, please contact the Extension Office. Wanted: National Anthem Performers Do you want to showcase your musical talent at the county fair for all fairgoers? We are looking for someone to play an instrument or sing the National Anthem each morning of the fair before the start of the morning shows. Contact the Extension Office if you or someone you know would be interested in volunteering to share their talent by performing the National Anthem AKSARBEN Entries The deadline to submit livestock entries for the AKSARBEN 4-H Stock Show is August 31. Entry forms are available at the Extension Office or online at The official premium (rule) book can also be found at the AKSARBEN website. For questions about entering for the 2018 AKSARBEN 4-H Stock Show, please contact the Extension Office. 8

This camp is for youth who have completed 4-6 grade. This camp is free to attend and an RSVP is due to the Extension office by August 15. Please send a sack lunch with your child to camp! Cass County Fair Food Stand Donations and Support Keep an eye out for the Cass County Fair donation ribbons/clovers at the local grocery stores! This is a great way to donate to the food stand before the Cass County Fair begins! Additionally, 4-H families may also be contacted in the upcoming months to donated items to the County Fair Foodstand by the Foodstand Committee. Local Cass County Fair supporters have many opportunities to donate items to the food stand to make delicious items we all enjoy during the fair! The Foodstand is also seeking volunteers. If you know of people or businesses that would like to volunteer please contact Liz Denny. Fair Reminder to Parents & Families We know your 4-Hers and Clover Kids love your support and assistance. Please remember when they are showcasing their exhibits this is their time to shine and share their knowledge of the project area! You are welcome to take photos and support from the sidelines, but please do not accompany them into the judging area or interfere with these important conversations. This helps your youth develop confidence and communication skills! Club Food Drive Challenge at County Fair The Cass County Youth Council will be collecting donations again this year for the local food pantries during fair. They are challenging each club to bring a decorated box to the fair, and the club that collects the most items will receive a pizza party. With questions, for a list of suggested donation items, or to sign up your club to bring a box please contact the Extension Office! A list of donation items will be available on the Cass County Extension website. 10 Page 10 Community Events With summer here be sure to be on the lookout for awesome opportunities for your club and members to get out and be part of local community events throughout the summer! This is a great time of year to focus on community events and other opportunities for your 4-H Clubs to show off the great things you are doing. We are always getting requests for 4-H groups to be part of local events, so don t hesitate to reach out most organizers would love to have you! Below is one opportunity that 4-H Clubs in the Atlantic area may want to participate in. Please do not forget about other upcoming events that your 4-H Club could be a part of! KJAN and local sponsors are going to be hosting a community block party to celebrate Atlantic s 150th anniversary on August 19, The event will be held on the grounds of the Atlantic Middle School from 11:00 am 3:00 pm. A meal will be provided (sandwich/chips/side/drink) for $1.50. KJAN will pick up the the rest of the meal cost. The Nishna Valley Family YMCA, Atlantic churches and other local clubs have been approached to participate. We would welcome any Atlantic area 4-H Clubs to participate in any way you see fit. We would like this to be a picnic-style, family event. There is no committee...all they ask is that you let Jim Field (KJAN) know what your group plans to do (kids/family events) so that we don t have too much duplication. You will be outdoors with no electricity. You will need to provide your own tables/chairs and any other supplies you may need. A separate committee is planning to have a permanent local honor for former Atlantic, University of Iowa and Kansas City Chiefs star Ed Podolak during the event. Ed has committed to attend. So we are expecting a large crowd. This is the last weekend before school begins and we would like to make it a memorable one. We hope that you can be an important part of it! With questions please contact Jim Field at KJAN. Address Change Just a reminder to all 4-Her s, leaders and families. My address changed earlier this year to shelbyvh@iastate.edu. It was brought to my attention that my old is no longer working and Extension IT has corrected the issue, so that account is deactivated. As we get into the busy fair season, many folks may have questions that need a quick answer, so please use this new with any questions or concerns to make sure they get to me and I can reply in a timely manner! -Shelby Iowa State University Extension and Outreach does not discriminate on the basis of age, disability, ethnicity, gender identity, genetic information, marital status, national origin, pregnancy, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or status as a U.S. veteran.
