2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Page Page 2 2 Dear friends: Spring has finally come! Jan-Mar 2017 strids We are all getting excited for the upcoming events which will take place in the spring and summer! The first event, the STARLIGHT SOIREE, our annual fundraising gala, will be held on Friday evening, JUNE The PET FEST & WALKATHON will also be taking place on Saturday, SEPTEMBER 23. Please SAVE both DATES and come to support us! We will also soon be launching an ALL-YEAR ROUND ONLINE GARAGE SALE in order to raise more funds to help pay our huge vet fees. It will be promoted on our website and Facebook Page so please watch out for it. Spring/Summer is also the KITTEN SEASON, the busiest time of our Society. The calls on stray cats and kittens will reach a high level during this period and there will be an increase in the intake of cats during the next few months. We are doing our best to take in as many as we can to stop the overpopulation of homeless cats. By taking in and neutering/spaying these strays we help to reduce their overpopulation in the future. Donations and foster homes for cats/kittens are urgently needed. Please spread the word. I look forward to seeing you and your family/friends at our STARLIGHT SOIREE on Friday, June 16, 2017! 4 Page 4 LOVE at FIRST SIGHT Lawrence and I have been following the Mississauga Humane Society on Facebook for about a year now and it \ When two humans met a dog from Thailand by Anett Erdei & Lawrence Wong LAWRENCE and I have been following the MHS Facebook page for a year now. It was several weeks ago when we saw a post about their appeal to foster dog meat trade survivors coming from Thailand through the SPARED SASSY Project. I immediately told Lawrence about the opportunity as we have been exploring the idea of adopting a dog. We have prepared ourselves a week in advance about the possibility of the dogs feeling scared, trying to leave or run away and most importantly about the separation anxiety the dogs would be going through. Then the day came. We have arrived at the airport to pick KAISLEY up. By this time we knew that she would be our foster dog assigned to us out of the 4 dogs coming from Thailand. We received all the necessary supplies and coaching which we have found extremely helpful. We waited with the other foster parents until midnight when the dogs were rolled out to us in their crates. If anyone believes in love at first sight, this was definitely it for Lawrence and I. We immediately fell in LOVE with KAISLEY! We got in touch with Mississauga Humane Society and applied to be a foster parent. Upon acceptance into the program we have received an extensive amount of information about how to treat these dogs coming from the dog meat industry and the ordeal they had gone through. We were told that it takes time to earn a dog s trust and that we have got to be patient with them. The dogs are coming from a life where they have been living on the streets, have been abused and lost all possible trust for humans, so we need to ensure that we are fully aware of this and are ready to commit to the Project and most importantly to earn the trust of these dogs. The first three days were the hardest for KAISLEY. Since we have a condo, not a house, we had to immediately potty train her. She did have a few accidents in the condo, until she was trained not to go potty inside. One thing we had to understand is that these dogs are coming from Thailand, where they live in a completely different environment and time zone. They are also going to be jet lagged. KAISLEY cried through the entire night standing right by the door, trying to leave, and she was only able to fall asleep at around 8 AM. We walked her every 2 hours for the next 3 days and Lawrence and I took turns in paying attention to her as we were both exhausted. It took 3 FULL days for KAISLEY to get accustomed to our environment (winter/snow), to our time zone and sleeping schedule and by the third day she finally realized that she could trust us. By the third week we were together we knew we are absolutely in love with her! We decided to officially welcome KAILSEY to our family by adopting her. We could not be happier with the decision we have made to foster KAISLEY and we would be happy to do it again. We are also very touched by the work and the Spared Sassy project the Mississauga Humane Society is doing for these dogs as we are very saddened by the Dog Meat Trade Industry.
5 Page 5 As Mississauga Humane Society does not have a shelter, FOSTER HOMES ARE OUR LIFE BLOOD. Foster Parents are very valuable to us as they provide a HOME for our rescued pets before they are adopted. The foster homes provide a stable and loving environment which can never be replaced by a shelter. Over the years, MHS has had many foster parents for dogs and cats. Starting this issue, we will be featuring some of our fosters. ANDREA, JUSTIN & MATTHEW ERIN & MATT ANDREA & her family only started fostering for MHS last December. However, she s a special person as she took in GEORGIE, a cat that most people are reluctant to foster. GEORGIE has been tested positive for Feline Leukemia. Because of his condition it had been a challenge to find GEORGIE a foster home. Then Andrea came along. She met GEORIGE at the clinic, knew about his condition and took him home! It has been 4 months now and George is a happy camper. He was a sick/skinny boy but has gained 2 lbs in 3 months! Recently ANDREA also took in DRAKE, another stray cat we rescued who was also tested positive for Leukemia. DREW was very scared in the beginning but with the love and patience of his foster family, he is improving day by day. GEORGIE also watches out for him like a big brother! These little guys have brought so much joy and love into our lives and have quickly become part of our family. We love them very much! It feels great to be able to help animals in need by giving them a foster home. These cats also give us just as much as we give them, if not more. We hope there are more people willing to foster cats especially those with health issues like the FIV/FeLv+ cats. ERIN & MATT are what we called Double Foster Parents. They foster both dogs and cats for us! Their started fostering for us about 3 years ago and their first fostered pet is MABEL, a toothless cat who s now adopted. Then they decided for a change and took in BAM BAM, dog we rescued from the pound. Then came ALFIE, then MALCOLM, then BUTCHY (BETSEY) who all have been adopted now. Their current fosters are BAILEY, a dog meat trade survivor from Thailand and also RYU, a 9-yr -old diabetic cat who needs daily injections of insulin. This kind and loving couple has fostered a total of 7 pets in the last 3 years! ERIN & MATT have a full house of animals. Besides the fostered pets, they also have their own pets 2 dogs and 1 cat! They really are our model foster parents! Fostering for the MHS has allowed us to meet new pals, open up our home and, most importantly, save the lives of countless animals. Each animal that has come to us has taught us more about life, love and compassion than we ever thought. While it's difficult to let them go to their forever homes, it's incredibly worthwhile knowing you've saved a life, whose future will be full of love and happiness.
6 Page 6 While the above sign is just a joke, it is a real sad situation that too many cats are given up due to allergy of a family member. Allergy is the top reason given by cat owners when relinquishing their cats. Except for those who are extremely sensitive to animal dander, most pet owners can sensibly live with their pet allergies; symptoms can be managed, and they can be spared the heartbreak of giving up their beloved companions. If you think you have asthma or allergies, see your physician. Ask your allergist to specifically test for allergies to pet dander rather than making an assumption. Many allergy sufferers are sensitive to more than one allergen. So if you re allergic to dust, insecticides, pollen, cigarette smoke, and cat dander, you ll need to reduce the overall allergen level in your environment by concentrating on all of the causes, not just the pet allergy. If your allergist has done skin and blood tests to determine that you are allergic to your pet, it does not necessarily mean that you have to part with your beloved pet! The following steps will help to much reduce the cat allergy and you can still keep GARFIELD! YOU AND YOUR CAT Keep your cat CLEAN & GROOMED ALLERPET-C for cats. This is a special product you can use on your cats and has helped many owners keep their animals. It's truly a miracle for some! It's available at pet stores. It's a liquid - you moisten a paper towel or washcloth with this liquid and wipe your pet down with it once a week. It neutralizes the allergens on the pet's skin and fur. It takes about 3 weeks for it to reach peak effectiveness. Sometimes the cat has to be washed/wiped down once a day for it to be effective. Alternatively, you can get a micro fiber cloth and just damp rub down the cats' coats to rid it of visible dander. Some people bath their cats regularly to reduce the amount of cat allergen. Or you can use a PET Wipe available from a pet store to wipe through the body of your cat. Some people SHAVE their cat regularly and this should MUCH REDUCE THE DANDER! Create an allergy free area. This is usually your bedroom. Close the door and keep the cat out of it. Take allergy shots and medication to relieve your symptoms. Wash your hands thoroughly, immediately after petting your cat and do not rub your eyes. YOUR LIVING SPACE Vacuum up cat allergen with a high grade HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) vacuum twice weekly. Wear a dust mask. Vacuum walls, carpet, flooring, furniture everywhere, thoroughly. In addition to vacuuming, use a vapour system cleaner to clean your home. This has been proven by research to be extremely helpful in killing off dust mites, bacteria, mold spores and cat allergen. Wash all bedding in 140-degree hot water at least twice monthly to eliminate allergen and dust mite. A good HEPA air purifier is essential for cleaning and filtering the air. Use furnace filters that trap pet dander and change them regularly. Use impermeable covers for mattresses and pillows to prevent allergen particles brought into the Replace heavy curtains and drapes with washable fabrics.

10 Page 10 HUMOUR TIME THANK YOU to DUMB COOK We visited. our newly married daughter, who was preparing her first Thanksgiving dinner. I noticed the turkey thawing in the kitchen sink with a dish drainer inverted over the bird. our SPONSORS I asked why a drainer covered the turkey. Our daughter turned to my wife and said, Mom, you always did it that way. Yes, my wife replied, BUT YOU DON T HAVE A CAT!? In recent years more and more people have turned into VEGANS (eating food free from animal products like diary or eggs) for health, environmental, and/or ethical reasons. For many, one of the hardest things to give up is Coffee which always goes with milk or cream. This could be the case some 10 years ago when there were very few milk substitutes. However, these days there are so many non-diary milk/cream substitutes it s much easier to take the first step to be a Vegan. Shop at the super stores and you will find many other choices like almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, hazelnut, cashew, hemp...there must be one kind that suits your taste and provides the same or close to flavour and texture of the cow s milk! Let s start with a cup of VEGAN COFFEE today! DID YOU KNOW? Kangaroos use their tails for balance, so if you lift a kangaroo s tail off the ground, it can t hop? Houseflies have a lifespan of only 14 days? Ostriches can run faster than horses, and the male ostriches can roar like lions? THANK YOU To all of those who contributed articles to this issue. A big vote of thanks to all of our volunteers, foster parents & donors.
