Leo Pal Sarge Honey Bear and Smiley Peachy Greys Success Stories Red Lady Many animals have benefitted from being rescued by Thundering Paws. Here are just a few of our stories Boda Rosemary Dirt Road Seven Sasha Roxanne Jersey Sugar Batman
Sasha (2004) Locked in a bathroom with a large iguana Paws were pinned down so the iguana could eat her House of Horror - Baby sat on the floor chewing on feces When the bathroom door was opened, the iguana shot out and escaped through a window Sasha was hairless, emaciated, weak, and weighed only 1.5 lbs After 9 months of rehabilitation, placed with her forever family Iguana also found a new home and child services intervened to care for the baby
Pal (2005) Cold January morning found laying in a horse stall Nearly frozen and very cold, thought to be dead No top or bottom front teeth, canine teeth were each broken in half Estimated to be 8-9 years old and had a severe case of heartworms After 8 months of recovery, he was placed with a loving family
Dirt Road Seven (2005) Seven kittens were left to die on the dirt road They were being eaten alive by red fire ants The ants had eaten the nipples off their bellies and had attacked their noses Due to swelling it took a month before their sexes could be determined After recovering and learning how to socialize, they all found good homes
Sarge (2006-passed in 2012) Sarge (a purebred boxer) was found laying almost dead in a soy bean field At only 32 pounds, bones and spine protruded through his skin Estimated to be 3-5 years old and Heartworm positive Single most expensive rescue ($1,300) Expenses were covered by private donors, Thundering Paws, and the Robeson County Humane Society
Sarge (2006-passed in 2012) After 11 months of treatment, rehabilitation and socializing, he got his forever family Enjoyed a relaxed life and even got to travel to his family s beach home Loved and well cared for
Leo and His Babies (2007) Litter dumped with DAD (Leo) With no milk, he had to hunt to feed him and seven babies After being rescued, he continued to play and care for the babies Tried to place Leo three times, but couldn t adjust to new environments Permanently lives with the Gables His son Milo is still available for adoption
Honey Bear and Smiley (2008) A malnourished female German shepherd started showing up in the field across from the Gable s ranch She came for months to eat, but wouldn t allow the Gable s to bring for home then she stopped coming A couple of months later she showed up for food again, this time with three puppies in tow The next day there were only two puppies, which she left before she ran off never to be seen again Didn t take long for these two to find loving homes
The Peachy Grey and Black Kittens (2008) Several kittens were spotted on the dirt road Although some had already been ran-over, there four peachy gray kittens and four black kittens Four days later one of the kittens had kittens All of the kittens were placed in good homes Trevor recovered from the stress of kitten birth
Roxanne (2008) Purebred Main Coone Original owner paid $650 for her and got her fixed, shots, and declawed Lacked breed knowledge Resulted in bad behavior Was headed for the pound Loving family drove from Georgia to adopt Roxy
Batman (2008) Batman (a purebred Shitzu), less than a year old A single mother of a mentally challenged teenage boy surrendered Batman Son was abusing Batman and he had became very scared of people Now lives happily with his sister (a Shitzu) and his new mom and dad
Rosemary (2008-passed in 2012) Rosemary was a classic case of owner neglect and abuse Dumped in the middle of winter Most of her teeth were gone or broken Had an embedded collar injury She was middle-aged, tested positive for heartworms, and had cancer She went through heartworm treatment but remained too weak for cancer treatment Due to the type of care she required, she remained in our care until she passed in 2012
Boda and Red (2009) Boda Red Elderly gentleman moved out of a century old farmhouse acres behind the Gable s place Abandoned his two dogs when he left About a month later, a gorgeous purebred German shepherd (Boda) and a handsome red hound (Red) started showing up looking for food Covered in ticks and very thin, they were very friendly After gaining weight and being treated for heartworms, they each went to live with new loving families
Sugar (2009) a.k.a. Wednesday A very pregnant tree-walker waddled down the dirt road right before a storm Within a week she gave birth to 11 puppies (nine survived) Sugar and all her babies (5 girls and 4 boys) have been placed in their forever homes
Lady (2009) Attacked by a dog Internal organs could be seen Ligaments and hip bones were bare After removing maggots from her wound and treating her with medicine and antibiotics, the vet asked us for rehabilitation help Eighteen months later, she was still recovering (gradually developed new layers of skin and fur) Lady passed away in January 2011 due to a genetic defect in her bowels (not related to her injury).
