2 President s Message Summer is always our busiest time. This year was no exception. The influx of stray kittens from the months of April to Sept has kept our volunteers very busy. The vet expenses on these additional cats have also drained up our bank account! The 2013 PET FEST & WALKATHON was held on Sept 14 and it was another successful event. For details please go to Page 8. To keep our rescue work going, funds are definitely needed all the time. We will have another fund raising night taking place on Friday, Nov 15. It is called PETS ROCK (for humans only though!) and will be held at the Port Credit Legion. Admission fee is only $10! Please come and have a night of fun while helping our animals. In Nov and Dec there will also be PET PICTURE TAKING WITH SANTA (3 dates) taking place. Details of these events are given on Page 9. THANK YOU to our Page 2 SPONSORS I am also pleased to announce the recent launch of our new FACEBOOK Page. The page was set up with the purpose of connecting more with the public. It will provide the most current news about our pets and of the activities/events of our Society. I hope you will enjoy this new way of interacting with our Society. I encourage you to LIKE our page Talk to you soon on FACEBOOK! Lily Chan President RESCUE & ADOPTION STATISTICS Jan-Sept 2013 No. of Dogs Rescued: 145 No. of Dogs Adopted: 93 No. of Cats Rescued: 370 No. of Cats Adopted: 232 TOTAL RESCUED: 515 TOTAL ADOPTED: 325 Something about MHS: MHS is a registered charity run 100% by volunteers. It does not have a shelter, business venue or paid staff. It receives no support from the Government, City or the SPCA. Without a shelter, MHS depends on the kindness of foster parents who open their heart and home to animals in need. By fostering a pet you are helping to SAVE a LIFE. Since 1999, MHS has rescued close to 5,000 homeless animals. MHS Is NOT the animal shelter - Mississauga Animal Services, which is run by the City.

4 TOM & RIGGS The senior pair by Lily Chan Page 4 At the age of 87, Tom Hodgins is our Society s most senior foster parent; he is also probably the oldest foster parent of dogs in the world! When Tom first started fostering for us in August 2004, he was already 78 yrs old! Most animal rescue groups would have declined his application to foster due to his age. I said to myself WHY NOT? Although we do need foster parents to be 18 years old or over, we don t have an under age limit! After a home visit and meeting Tom in person, I decided that Tom would be suitable to be a foster parent. Tom was in excellent shape for his age. He had a nice house with a big fenced-in yard. He lived by himself, was retired and stayed home, had no kids, and no other pets. He had had many dogs in his life so he was very experienced. What more could we ask for in a foster home for a dog? I remember the first dog I gave Tom to foster was a beagle called Dundas. For the past 9 years he has fostered and adopted out 66 dogs, many of them beagles and smaller dogs, although he had also fostered several bigger and older dogs. There were also times that Tom was fostering 2 dogs at the same time! Tom always takes good care of every dog he fosters and finds good homes for them. Tom is now 87, he is still in good shape for his age (he probably has better eyesight and hearing than I do!) and he is still fostering a dog for us! Tom has been fostering Riggs, a senior dog, since Riggs was surrendered to MHS in March We were told that his owner could not take care of him anymore. He was about 11 yrs old with several medical issues. Because of his age and health condition, he was classified as a long term foster. He has been fostered by Tom ever since. In March this year Tom sold his house and moved to a seniors home that allows pets. He took Riggs with him! The following is the story of Riggs as told by Tom, his foster parent/caretaker of more than 4 years: Tom and Riggs in the seniors home About 4.5 years ago Riggs was given to me as a fostered dog. At that time Riggs was listed as being 11 years old. I was told that his owners were an alcoholic couple. Riggs was only 9 pounds then and was very much in need of medical attention. Riggs also had no teeth as he probably lost them due to a gum infection that was not treated. The vet confirmed that Riggs also had calcium oxalate stones in the bladder. He could not pass them as they were too brittle, too large and scored his urethra. We had to arrange for Riggs to have an operation to remove the stones from his bladder. Since then we have contacted a Homeopathic Veterinarian who has given him medication, which reduces the stones size so that he can pass them without difficulty About two years ago Riggs came in from outside, limping. He had damaged his right back leg and couldn t walk on it. An X ray showed that Riggs had dislocated his left rear knee. A surgery would be needed, but the vet felt that Riggs was not suitable for surgery due to his old age, and that he might not survive. Unfortunately, Riggs has been in this position ever since. However, he is in no pain and can go for short walks without too much trouble. For long walks I put him in a baby stroller! Riggs disposition is unique. He loves attention, loves people, and is the best possible therapy dog I have ever encountered. When he enters a room of solemn people they immediately turn their attention to him. It is his pleasant disposition and enjoyment of people that is immediately shown, and it is love at first site. He becomes the new attraction within the room. He can also play the spoiled brat to the limit, yet you never get angry with him for he is such a loveable character. Even in the short time he has been at Chartwell Classic (seniors home) he is loved by so many who he has come in contact with him. He is a joy to the whole community. Way to go Tom! You are a role model for all foster parents!

5 Page 5 By Glenn Williams A home without pets just isn t the same as a home with pets. With pets a home is a much happier, healthier and more loving place to live, so after 9 months without pets (due to change of family situation) the time was right to welcome another furry, four-legged friend into our home again. Wanting to include my son Shaun (aged 6) in the process, we began talking about it in the summer to get ourselves ready and to figure out a few things like, cat or dog? Kitten or puppy? Bird? Fish? Hamster? What would be best for us AND for the new arrival? After talking about it for a few weeks, we decided on a cat and a mature one. I explained to my son that kittens always seem to get adopted quickly, being as cute and cuddly as they are. But the older cats, the mature ones did not and they could be left waiting for a new home for a long time and that could be tough on them. My son agreed and the search began. We began searching the internet and it became very clear there were so many cats (and dogs) in need of good homes and it was going to be difficult picking one over another. We looked at the pictures, read the names, and tried to find the right one for us, but that was easier said than done. Not having much luck narrowing our choices down and with Shaun asking When are we getting our cat, daddy? it was time to just make it happen. CAT ADOPTION ROOM GLOBAL PET FOODS 1170 Burnhamthorpe Rd CAT ADOPTION ROOM DUNDAS EAST ANIMAL HOSPITAL 966 Dundas St (Tomken) So we went to the Cat Adoption Room of the Mississauga Humane Society located at Global Pet Food store on Burnhamthorpe Road. The Global staff were very helpful, they showed us the cats (9 of them), told us a little bit about each of them, their disposition, how long they had been there, age, etc. Now to choose. When we went into the enclosure one cat came right up to Shaun and rubbed up against him.a black and white 3-year-old male named SEBASTIAN with what can only be described as a moustache and goatee. Then another came over, a white male, 8 years old named SONIC. Quickly our choices were made and we adopted both of them. What s the difference in taking care of one cat as opposed to two? Not much really, so home we all went. It s been over a month now and we are happy to say Sebastian and Sonic are doing great and so are Shaun and I. What wonderful additions they are to our home! They get along great; they play together and are very happy with us as we are with them. Shaun has developed a close bond with Son and vice versa. Sonic sleeps at Shaun s feet, he lets Shaun rub and pat him for as long as he wants and it s great to watch! While Sebastian, who was a bit timid the first couple of weeks, likes to cuddle up with me late at night when the other two are sleeping. And that s OK with me. So I m happy to say, all four of us are living happier, healthier lives with lots of love and fun to go around. We are very happy with the decision to adopt older cats; it s a great feeling to provide a loving home for these animals who have spent too much of their lives living in uncertainty, upheaval and confinement. And their happiness seems to show, flicking their tails, chasing the numerous toys we ve bought them, purring lots or just following Shaun as he walks up the stairs pulling a piece of string behind him. Whoever said mature cats don t play hasn t met Sebastian or Sonic. Our home is a better place and we have a couple of older cats to thank for that. So before you pick that cute, furry, loveable kitten, consider adopting an older cat, they ll appreciate it and so will you. When you adopt a senior cat, you re truly saving a life. When you adopt two, you are saving two lives! CAT ADOPTION ROOM PET VALU 1510 Dundas St (Dixie) KITTEN CORNER PET VALU 6085 Creditview Rd

PETS ROCK Fund Raising Night Live Bands Silent Auction Lucky Draw Food & Drinks Friday, Nov 15 7pm to 2 am Riverview Room Port Credit Legion 35 Front St N Security officials at China's Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport noticed something rather peculiar in the bag of a traveler identified only as "Mr. Li" on Monday. The airport's X-ray machine showed suspicious corners on what appeared to be a KFC sandwich package, according to the AFP. Mr. Li vehemently insisted the item was "nothing but a burger." Security staff pointed out that the odd shape of the burger resembled that of a turtle. Mr. Li was forced to open his bag and found that he was indeed attempting to transport his "beloved" pet turtle on the plane. The man reportedly was able to entrust the animal in a friend's care before continuing on his flight to Beijing. The 50 lb RABBIT! 10 Page 10 Steps of COMPASSION QUOTES about ANIMAL RIGHTS I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being. Abraham Lincoln I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men. Leonardo da Vinci The question is not, "Can they reason?" nor, "Can they talk?" but "Can they suffer? Jeremy Bentham If you want to test cosmetics, why do it on some poor animal who hasn't done anything? They should use prisoners who have been convicted of murder or rape instead. So, rather than seeing if perfume irritates a bunny rabbit's eyes, they should throw it in Charles Manson's eyes and ask him if it hurts. Ellen DeGeneres, CONVERSATION On COWS A lady from the city and her traveling companion were riding the train through Vermont when she noticed some cows. "What a cute bunch of cows!" she remarked. "Not a bunch, herd", her friend replied. "Heard of what?" "Herd of cows." "Of course I've heard of cows." "No, a cow herd." "What do I care what a cow heard. I have no secrets to keep from a cow!" VEGETARIAN SNACKS BAKED ZUCCHINI CHIPS Ingredients Medium zucchini, cut int o1/4 inch slices. ½ cup seasonsed dry bread crumbs 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper 2 tablespons ofgrated Parmesan cheese 2 egg whites 1. Horses and cows sleep while standing up? The average housefly only lives for 2 or 3 weeks? Rats breed so quickly that in just 18 months, 2 rats could have created over 1 million relatives? to all of those who contributed articles to this issue.
