2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE About Dear friends:. The past few months had been a busy period for us. We had a couple of fundraisers, the largest one being our annual PET FEST & WALKATHON that took place on May 19. This year the event was held at the Mississauga Valley Park. For details and pictures, please go to Page 8 and 9. Spring/Summer is the KITTEN SEASON! The calls on stray cats and kittens usually reach a high level during this period and our hardworking voluntary trappers would be working very hard to humanely trap these strays. We are doing our best to take in as many as we can to stop the overpopulation of stray cats. By taking in and neutering/spaying these strays we help to reduce their thousands of homeless cats in the future. Donations and foster homes for Cats/Kittens are urgently needed. Please contact us if you can help. Finally, our annual Fundraising Gala, the STARLIGHT SOIREE, will be held in mid September. Please watch out for the announcement! 4 Page 4 Jan Clare the Highest Pledger JAN has been a long-time supporter of MHS. Needless to say, she s a bigtime animal lover. Jan is the owner of some dogs and cats; we would not mention how many! Everyone knows that Jan takes care of her pets like her own children. Jan has a kind heart and always takes in senior or sick dogs and cats those that are hard to find homes for. The most recent one she took in was Max, a senior dog whose owner passed away recently. JAN has also adopted two cats from us. MISSY is the first one she adopted back in The most recent one she adopted is BIANCA, a senior DEAF cat. MISSY and BIANCA are certainly very lucky cats. JAN is also an avid participant of our annual PET FEST & WALKATHON. For the last several years, Jan has always been the HIGHEST PLEDGER. This year, Jan is the winner again and she raised a total of over $3,200 in pledge money for our PET FEST & WALKATHON that recently took place on May 19. JAN told us that the collection of Pledges this year was also a tribute to TANNER, one of her dogs who passed away unexpectedly in November 2017: Tanner was a piece of work when he arrived here back in June of Skin and bones had been found running (working dog) and nobody came to claim him, food obsessed, terrified of the hose and anything in your hand. I found out some other things about him that weren t very nice and have said if I ever find the guy I ll take the assault charge if somebody leaves me alone with him for 5 minutes. Needless to say, he did not come from a happy background. Took me 6 months of time, patience and love and he turned into the most amazing boy. Many people find it hard to collect pledges. So how did JAN do it? IF you don t ask you won t get it I just asked everyone! Complete strangers (like a shopper in the grocery store), clients, friends and relatives. I let them know that the money is for the homeless animals, a good cause. I also made it easy for people to donate, like my friends can donate via transfer. This really helped to bring in lots of extra funds. Thank you, JAN! We wish there were more JAN s in this world! WISH LIST MONETARY DONATIONS FOSTER HOMES ADOPTIVE HOMES
5 Page 5 BUSTER Larger than LIFE (October 20, 2006 March 6, 2018) By Hirushi de Alwis March 6 th 2018 was one of the saddest days in our lives, because we had to bid Goodbye to our beloved fur boy Buster. Only consolation we have is that he was not in pain, we walked long walks until March 5th night. That weekend we walked everywhere, not knowing that it would be his last. He came to us in August 2008 quite unexpectedly. His current owner was surrendering him and Mississauga Humane society needed a foster home. So there we were volunteering, but still skeptical because I was not sure how our 11 year old Foxhound whom we had adopted from Mississauga Humane Society would react. It did not matter; our Foxhound Spike decided to adopt him and then we made our decision and Buster became part of our family. He had severe separation anxiety and he bit through a metal door lock and ripped carpets I still can t imagine how he did it. But we were not going to give up on him. He was a quick learner and he knew this family would always look after him no matter what. He was protective, very loving, loved company, laid back and also knew how to take mommy home after walks. Very intelligent and sometimes learnt things what he was not supposed to: I was teaching my quiet Greyhound to tap on the door with his paw so that we knew when he was ready come in from our backyard. Buster was always vocal and would bark when he wanted to come in. Then what happens Buster starts tapping on the door instead of barking, guess he thought that s what mommy wants. Area people called him BIG FELLA and everyone was sad to hear that he crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge. He was good with all dogs with the exception of German Shepherds I believe he thought he was a hound because he had hound brothers all the time. He was extremely patient with puppies and will allow them to lick his face, climb on him and would never snap back because he knew they are babies. Food was an afterthought he ate mainly because mommy wanted him to. Sometimes my daughter Thurmila would yell at him Buster eat your food there are Dogs starving without food. Sometimes his brothers would eat his food and he will just watch. So mommy had to police him until he finished his food if not we would end up having a Fat Greyhound. His favourite season was WINTER and Lots and lots of SNOW. We and his doggie brothers could never understand why he loved to sleep on a SNOW BED all the time in winter. He loved toys specially elephant Dumbo and also will never destroy any. So over the years he had a quite a collection because we found some reason to gift him with toys, and watch him show off them to his human sisters, Will steal sisters all the soft toys. But he was very generous, sharing his toys with his doggie brothers and friends who came to visit. He was very emotional and would express himself very vocally.(his Foxhound Brother taught him to talk like a Foxhound ) He will talk without a full stop when he does not like something or when he thinks we are in dangers like from the hair dryer, vacuum cleaner, clipping nails. Safeguarding his two-human sister from moms morning wake up calls was of utmost important and he will come running from where ever when he hears me waking up my daughters. Loved to go in the car and bark at all the dogs we pass by. All we had say was CAR he will get so excited I will say it just to watch him and drive around the block. We travelled everywhere with him and he loved it. We made lots of memories in those travels which are very precious and imprinted in our memories and some captured in pictures. His favorites were the Cottage holidays in Grand Bend where he was allowed to roam around in the huge garden and then go swimming in Lake Huron. He loved his brothers, two whom he lost before his time and was so depressed. Spike his foxhound brother taught him to talk and follow a scent like a foxhound. In return Buster taught his Greyhound brothers Teddy & Hustler to be Guard dogs. He needed a brother all the time and his current Greyhound brother Hustler is missing him so much he did play or touch a toy until recently. He was panting severely on March 5 th night, At the vet it was determined ha had fluid in the lungs and at Oakville Mississauga Vet emergency they extracted 2 liters of fluid, when tested it had cancer cells, but his liver, kidney was functioning well. One lung was gone and also there were cancer tumors in his stomach and on the spleen. His breathing was still short even after extracting all that fluid. He went in my arms. The pain is unbearable. We all miss him so much and see him everywhere. I have a very hard time going on walks as he was always by my right side. But I am so glad that Buster was in our lives and we made lots of memories together. BEAUTIFUL PRECIOUS BOY Run like the wind with your brothers and friends at the Rainbow Bridge.

8 NEWS & EVENTS MISSISSAUGA STEELHEADS PUCKS & PAWS GAME Thanks to the donations of 50 tickets by MISSISSAUGA STEELHEADS HOCKEY TEAM, we were able to 'treat' our foster parents/volunteers for a game at which dogs were welcome! We had a great day at the Hersey Centre on Sunday, March 4, There were about 50 people and 7 doggies that attended, including Guppy, Koda, Ladybug, Rose and Spencer the MHS dogs. We also set up a table promoting MHS and selling T shirts and Tote bags. We had many 'customers'! It was a great event and we hope we can invite the MHS folks to the event again next year! Thanks to our volunteers who helped at the MHS table at the Hersey Centre. THANK YOU RSA (Royal & Sun Alliance) Page 8 RSA (Sheridan Office) has again designated MHS as one of the 3 charities for fund raising. This will be the third year of their sponsorship for MHS! Throughout the year RSA organises activities and events to raise funds. We have been receiving donation cheques and items collected from donation drives for the last 2 years. In mid-april we received the first donation cheque for 2018! Thanks Christopher and Kelly of RSA for organising this. A big THANK YOU to all the staff of RSA for their support! PET VALU (Mavis/Dundas) CAT ADOPTION WEEKEND/FUNDRAISER On the weekend of April 21 & 22 we had an ADOPTION/FUNDRAISING WEEKEND at PET VALU (Mavis/Dundas) where we have a Cat Adoption Enclosure. We hosted a Bake Sale/T-Shirt Sale on both days. We even had homemade VEGAN Cookies and Cupcakes! Many baked items and T- shirts were sold. Thanks to our volunteers and bakers for making this event a success!

10 Page 10 COMPASSIONATE LIVING by Lily Chan LIVE & LET LIVE Summer is the time for insects and bugs. We will see more bugs, flies, and other insects in our homes during these hot and damp months. Many would just use anything they have on hand, like a piece of newspaper, and kill the insect within a second. However, these lives do not have to end up that way. Their lifespan may be very short, but they still have the right to live. THANK YOU to our SPONSORS CATCH & RELEASE! I have been using this HOMEMADE method and it works even for spiders! All you need is a piece of card board and a plastic cup (a clear one would be best). If you see a bug on the wall or on the floor, just put the cup on top of it so it cannot escape. Move it slowly sideways so the bug will fall off to the bottom of the cup. Then use the piece of card board to cover the top and the bug would be trapped. Carry the cup with the piece of cardboard and the insect can be released outside and carry on with their LIVES! IF this is too much for you, there are all kinds of Humane Bug or Spider Catchers on the market that can capture these small creates from a safe distance by sucking them in the vacuum pipe. Many have led lights so this can be done in the dark. These insects can be caught in an instant and then released back to where they belong to. HUMOUR TIME THANK YOU To all of those who contributed articles to this issue. A big vote of thanks to all of our volunteers, foster parents, donors, and sponsors
