6 More About Thursday, the November Bulls Selling 9, 2017at DDA 4 Temperament & Udder Scores Diamond D Angus feels it s very important to record temperament and udder scores. There are no ED s on some of these very important traits. Considering the safety of the crew and the ease of handling the cattle, we feel it s well worth our time to score and cull the animals that don t meet the standards we have set. The performance, efficiency, and meat quality will improve with docile cattle. There is no such thing as a perfect cow, and you have to decide which traits you want or need. A few years ago we started a program of keeping records on the temperament and udder qualities of our females. We score them from 1 to 5 in each category. Udder 1 Very good. 2 Above average. 3 Average. 4 Capable of raising a calf. 5 A non functional animal. Temperament 1 Calm. 2 Slightly restless, shifting. 3 Squirming and occasionally shaking the squeeze chute. 4 Continuous vigorous movement. 5 Berserk, rearing twisting. Key to erformance Information Birth weight Weaning Weight Yearling Weight # athfinder Adjusted Wean Efficiencyercentage of cow s weight that the calf weaned. See full explanation below. Calving Ease rediction Cows Only Fair Calving Ease Good Calving Ease Outstanding Calving Ease This is only a prediction by Diamond D Angus. This is not a guarantee. The sire provides only 1/2 of the genetics in determining birth weight. We calculate adjusted wean efficiency for each cow/calf pair. Adjusted wean efficiency is computed as the ratio of calf s adjusted 205 day weight to the cows adjusted weight. The adjusted cow weight is estimated by a process of rating each cow s body condition and giving her a score. A score of 5 is the median (no adjustment taken), 80 pounds is subtracted from her weight for a score of 6 and 80 pounds is added to her weight for a score of 4. By adjusting cow weights to equal body condition scores, it rewards cows that produce a bigger calf while maintaining her own body condition. Adjusted cow/calf ratio is shown for each sale bull in the catalog. Line Breeding In the notes of all the bulls selling, we talked about pedigrees in hopes of helping our customers understand our breeding program. We strongly believe that our customers greatly benefit from buying line-bred bulls. The benefits include: 1.) If you like what you see in a bull or cow family, by line breeding it intensifies these traits. A line-bred bull will breed more true to himself than a non-line bred bull. 2.) Line breeding intensifies all traits, good and bad. If genetically there were a problem, it would show up in our herd. We would identify the problem and eliminate the use of these traits. 3.) The cows and bulls that we have talked about in the notes have already gone through many generations of line breeding and put through a very rigid test. To pass the test they need to be of moderate frame, easy fleshing, adequate performance, structurally correct, and good udder quality. The bulls must be very masculine. 2/3 Interest & Full ossession Diamond D Angus is retaining one-third revenue sharing semen interest on every bull selling in this sale. Full possession and full salvage value sells on all bulls. Diamond D Angus will contact the new owner if they would like to collect semen and it will be done at the new owner s convenience, and Diamond D Angus expense. We are so very happy to have The Munroe family join the Diamond D Angus team. Jim has been here since January and he is already an essential part of our operation. His wife, Angie, and their kids also help when we need them. They are a very good family and great help. Thank you so much we appreciate all of you. 7 Diamond D Angus has the largest selection of influence in the world. is one of twelve bulls in the entire breed proven genetic defect free. What will Diamond D Angus Genetics do for you? Diamond D Angus would like to thank all of our past and future customers for believing in and supporting our program. Some might say we are out of the main stream. We have chosen to put a lot more emphases on functional and economic traits rather than ED s. During the 1980 s, cattle were being bred to look like race horses all legs and no guts. Many of the functional traits were left behind in the race for big numbers. We did not follow this trend; instead, choosing to breed for just classic Angus traits. While we have not bred cattle for carcass numbers, our ultrasound numbers are very good. This is an indication that just good basic Angus have always had good meat quality. Our commercial industry needs great cattle, not cattle with great numbers. Breeding cattle with great numbers is easy. Breeding great cattle is a challenging task. Consistency Diamond D Angus genetics will breed more true due to the many years of intensive line breeding. Calving ease We have always put emphases on good calving ease. We typically will not use a bull on cows that we would not also use on first calf heifers. Carcass Ultrasound has proven that DDA cattle excel in the grass fed beef industry, and as always, are still suitable for the feed lot. Diamond D Angus cattle have proven to be consistently superior in tenderness. Efficiency For many years, the cows and calves have been weighed at weaning and condition scores are given. Typically our cows are weaning calves weighing 50% of their own weight or greater. We prefer a 4-frame cow weighing 1200 to 1300 pounds in good flesh. Longevity Most traits can be compared to a chapter in a book, but longevity is the entire book. Diamond D Angus has numerous cows that are still in the herd at the age of fifteen and beyond. Experience We have the benefit of sixty- six years in the cattle business and fortyseven years in the registered Angus business. The Diamond D Advantage: More fertile and will cover more cows. Will continue to gain weight through first breeding season. No bulls feet or legs ruined due to hot feed. More years service from forage bulls. Less injuries and breeding problems. Bulls are more conditioned to the environment. Bulls have been put through a rigid test. If you want to produce cows that will last a long time, it is important to use bulls from a herd that has cows that have a proven record of calving every year on time for 10 or more calves. We cull our herd for udder quality and temperament and refuse to trim feet. If an animal needs its feet trimmed, we eliminate it. Most pure bred producers will make excuses for the problems you see on their cattle. The reality is almost everything you see is a result of the genetics. When you listen to a producer and they talk mostly about performance and ED numbers, chances are they have left most functional traits behind and the genetics will not last for many years. 5

At the age of 3 he bred 77 out of 80 three year olds. On the first jump at the semen collection center, he produced just under 500 straws of very concentrated semen. If you want fertile replacement females you need to use very fertile bulls. Diamond D Angus has always bred cattle with longevity and fertility. Josh Freiberger, owner of Hague Angus Ranch, bought our DDA Stella 443 cow for a foundation for his registered herd. She is the mother of the 202 bull; she is a beautiful cow at the age of 13. Sons of 202 were our high selling sire group in The 202 bull received 4 stars in the new T-Snap Fescue tolerance test. I know of no bull that has tested any better. The registered breeders that have chosen to use this great sire have offspring that top their sales. The mother of 27C is now 19 years old and still in production. I see the 0668 bull was born in 06. I can now see that the 0668 bull was one of the good ones. If you would like to increase your odds on purchasing a good bull, it is a necessity that you buy bulls that have many good bulls and good dams in their ancestral pedigree, sires and dams who have proven over time that they will produce functional trouble free cattle. The fuller the pedigree is with these types of cattle, the odds increase dramatically on getting the results you need. This is nothing new, people have known this for generations. It is only in modern history that it has become popular to breed on numbers. It is no surprise that those type of cattle have lost the functional traits needed to keep them in production. inebank 64/10 DOB 9/19/10 Reg Tattoo 1064 Hingaia 469 inebank 1/06 + inebank Waigroup 62/99 inebank 39/08 inebank Waigroup 104/98 inebank Waigroup 83/01 ine bank Waig 77/92 inebank Waig 31/95 inebank Waigroup 41/97 # + inebank 639/88 inebank Waigroup 111/03 inebank Waigroup 19/96 inebank Waigroup 1/98 inebank Waig 52/94 Yrlg. 11 select for the traits that make a cow profitable, the sons from the cow herd will consistently be the type that work in a cow/calf operation. When selecting a bull for a cow, I never think to my self, What bull should I use on this cow to make a good bull? It is always, What bull do I use on this cow to make her daughters even better? The 824 cow and her son 27C are both listed in the Angus Legends book. She is 19 years old and is in embryo production at the present time. She is what main stream Angus is lacking. She is an example of what can be accomplished when traits like feet, udder quality, fleshing ability, fertility and structure are selected and then repeated for generations. These are most of the essential traits that determine whether a cow/calf operation is profitable or not during middle of the road prices, like we are in today. Notice that none of these traits are measured by an ED. I feel obligated as a seed-stock producer to offer genetics that are profitable in both good and poor cattle markets. I have been home on the ranch since 1988 and that was our goal then and it has not changed. My Dad told me from the start, We will raise good quality, efficient females, even if that means not selling another bull. We feel that if you continue to If you want to produce a cow herd that the daughters will stay in production for 10 to 20 years, it is a must that you select from a herd that produces females that last greater than 10 years. No matter where you are buying semen, find out first how old the mother and grandmother to the bull you are buying the semen on are. Also, make sure that they have not missed a calving season. If you set your standards high in this criteria, this is a much greater tool than selecting for ED numbers. Main stream Angus promoters will make every excuse in the book as to why their cows are not that old. The most common is We sell all mature cows after the age of six. Be very leery of these breeders, they are most likely playing what I call the number game. They have to keep turning over generations to keep up with the numbers race. Also notice many breeders have two seasons in which they calve. This is due to the fact that when they don t breed in one season they can roll them to the next season. If you want to produce maternal cattle that last and are profitable, it is a must that you buy genetics from a breeder that does not make excuses for missing a calving season. Buy your genetics from a producer that has a proven record of cows staying in production for more than a decade and are still sound. Sale Bulls 1T DDA ONDERA 1T Calved 4/22/16 Reg. However, as long as they are functional I chose to keep them as long as they get bred every year. We never keep a cow if she does not bred. These cows have the traits that most main stream Angus have totally lost in the chase of maximum numbers. I would challenge anyone to find an old cow like this that has cutting edge numbers. Mainstream does the opposite, they keep rolling generations to stay on the cutting edge of the numbers game. 42 Beef Image Thursday, Analysis November (BIA) 9, 2017 Ultrasound BIA live animal carcass ultrasound is an automated, chuteside software system that captures images and calculates trait measurements on an objective basis. The traits determined by BIA ultrasound software are: Ribeye Area... (REA) Backfat Thickness... (BF) Ribeye Area/Hundred lbs Live Weight... (REA/CWT) ercent Intramuscular Fat... (% IMF) Ribeye Shape Score... (RES) Stress Score... (SS) Tenderness Score... (TEND). RES = Ribeye Shape Score Indicative of desired shape of the ribeye muscle. Correlated to eventual Yield Grade, Cutability, and % Retail roduct. Score ranges from 0.0 to 1.0. Acceptable score is 0.35 or greater. Ideal score is 0.50 or greater. SS = Stress Score Correlated to immune system strength of calf. Score ranges from = No Stress 20 = Slight Stress 30 = Slightly Moderate Stress 40 = Moderate Stress 50 = Severe Stress Impacts DTF, ADG, WDA, TCOG, Health Costs, QG, and YG. Ideal score is 20 or less. Ultrasound Explanation TEND = Tenderness Score Correlated to actual Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WB) in carcass ribeye steak at 12th rib location. Correlation Coefficients between WB and TEND currently average Score ranges from = Very Tender 20 = Tender 30 = Slightly Tender 40 = Slightly Tough 50 = Tough Ideal score is 25 or less. Acceptable score in yearling bulls is 28 or less. The ultrasound data on the following page is color coded. This is to assist you in analyzing the data quickly. When a box is: BLUE... it indicates superior numbers for that trait. GOLD... it indicates good numbers for that trait. WHITE... it indicates acceptable numbers for that trait. Numbers shown in red are unacceptable. You will notice the range for the colors is different for bulls than heifers. Due to the testosterone level in bulls, they show less marbling and also less in the tenderness score. My father always said that we judge a bull by the daughters he leaves in our herd. That usually takes 10 or more years to know for sure. If you would like to increase your odds on purchasing a good bull, it is a necessity that you buy bulls that have many good bulls and good dams in their ancestral pedigree, sires and dams that have proven over time that they will produce functional, trouble free cattle. The fuller the pedigree is with these type, the odds increase dramatically on getting the results you need. This is nothing new, people have known this for generations. It is only in modern history that it has become popular to breed on numbers. It is to no surprise that those types of cattle have lost the functional traits needed in order to keep them in production. 40
