All bulls will be semen tested by Dr. Lee in Oct My father always said that we judge a bull by the daughters he leaves in our herd. That usually takes 0 or more years to know for sure. If you would like to increase your odds on purchasing a good bull, it is a necessity that you buy bulls that have many good bulls and good dams in their ancestral pedigree, sires and dams that have proven over time that they will produce functional, trouble free cattle. The fuller the pedigree is with these type, the odds increase dramatically on getting the results you need. This is nothing new, people have known this for generations. It is only in modern history that it has become popular to breed on numbers. It is to no surprise that those types of cattle have lost the functional traits needed in order to keep them in production.

6 Thursday November 8, Critique List Due to the volume of customers buying from Diamond D Angus that live out -of-state and are not able to attend our sale, we offer what I call my Critique List. I try to be as open and honest as possible. The last thing I want to do is send an animal out of state and have my customer be unhappy with the selection. We organize this list by putting each sale animal by its self in a small pen with me in the pen. I judge over-all appearance, look at their feet very close, and judge their temperament. In each of these three categories I rank them Poor, OK, Good, or Very Good. If any bull selling does not receive at least Good or Very Good in any of these three categories, they are dropped from the sale. We also do the same with the females, however we will still offer a female if the comment is OK or Poor. Video footage is also available for our customers. Temperament & Udder Scores Diamond D Angus feels it s very important to record temperament and udder scores. There are no EPD s on some of these very important traits. Considering the safety of the crew and the ease of handling the cattle, we feel it s well worth our time to score and cull the animals that don t meet the standards we have set. The performance, efficiency, and meat quality will improve with docile cattle. There is no such thing as a perfect cow, and you have to decide which traits you want or need. A few years ago we started a program of keeping records on the temperament and udder qualities of our females. We score them from to 5 in each categoryeach of our sale bulls was given a score for his dam s udder and temperment at time of birth. These are the scores listed with the. Udder Very good. 2 Above average. 3 Average. 4 Capable of raising a calf. 5 A non functional animal. Temperament Calm. 2 Slightly restless, shifting. 3 Squirming and occasionally shaking the squeeze chute. 4 Continuous vigorous movement. 5 Berserk, rearing twisting. Key to Performance Information Birth weight Weaning Weight Yearling Weight # Pathfinder Adjusted Wean Efficiency Percentage of cow s weight that the calf weaned. See full explanation below.. Prediction Cows Only Fair Good Outstanding This is only a prediction by Diamond D Angus. This is not a guarantee. The sire provides only /2 of the genetics in determining birth weight. We calculate adjusted wean efficiency for each cow/calf pair. Adjusted wean efficiency is computed as the ratio of calf s adjusted 205 day weight to the cows adjusted weight. The adjusted cow weight is estimated by a process of rating each cow s body condition and giving her a score. A score of 5 is the median (no adjustment taken), 80 pounds is subtracted from her weight for a score of 6 and 80 pounds is added to her weight for a score of 4. By adjusting cow weights to equal body condition scores, it rewards cows that produce a bigger calf while maintaining her own body condition. Adjusted cow/calf ratio is shown for each sale bull in the catalog. Line Breeding In the notes of all the bulls selling, we talked about pedigrees in hopes of helping our customers understand our breeding program. We strongly believe that our customers greatly benefit from buying line-bred bulls. The benefits include:.) If you like what you see in a bull or cow family, by line breeding it intensifies these traits. A line-bred bull will breed more true to himself than a non-line bred bull. 2.) Line breeding intensifies all traits, good and bad. If genetically there were a problem, it would show up in our herd. We would identify the problem and eliminate the use of these traits. 3.) The cows and bulls that we have talked about in the notes have already gone through many generations of line breeding and put through a very rigid test. To pass the test they need to be of moderate frame, easy fleshing, adequate performance, structurally correct, and good udder quality. The bulls must be very masculine. 2/3 Interest & Full Possession Diamond D Angus is retaining one-third revenue sharing semen interest on every bull selling in this sale. Full possession and full salvage value sells on all bulls. Diamond D Angus will contact the new owner if they would like to collect semen and it will be done at the new owner s convenience, and Diamond D Angus expense.

7 Thursday November 8, 208 The Diamond D Advantage: More fertile and will cover more cows. Will continue to gain weight through first breeding season. No bulls feet or legs ruined due to hot feed. More years service from forage bulls. Less injuries and breeding problems. Bulls are more conditioned to the environment. Bulls have been put through a rigid test. What will Diamond D Angus Genetics do for you? Diamond D Angus would like to thank all of our past and future customers for believing in and supporting our program. Some might say we are out of the main stream. We have chosen to put a lot more emphases on functional and economic traits rather than EPD s. During the 980 s, cattle were being bred to look like race horses all legs and no guts. Many of the functional traits were left behind in the race for big numbers. We did not follow this trend; instead, choosing to breed for just classic Angus traits. While we have not bred cattle for carcass numbers, our ultrasound numbers are very good. This is an indication that just good basic Angus have always had good meat quality. Our commercial industry needs great cattle, not cattle with great numbers. Breeding cattle with great numbers is easy. Breeding great cattle is a challenging task. Consistency Diamond D Angus genetics will breed more true due to the many years of intensive line breeding. Calving ease We have always put emphases on good calving ease. We typically will not use a bull on cows that we would not also use on first calf heifers. Carcass Ultrasound has proven that DDA cattle excel in the grass fed beef industry, and as always, are still suitable for the feed lot. Diamond D Angus cattle have proven to be consistently superior in tenderness. Efficiency For many years, the cows and calves have been weighed at weaning and condition scores are given. Typically our cows are weaning calves weighing 50% of their own weight or greater. We prefer a 4-frame cow weighing 200 to 300 pounds in good flesh. Longevity Most traits can be compared to a chapter in a book, but longevity is the entire book. Diamond D Angus has numerous cows that are still in the herd at the age of fifteen and beyond. Experience We have the benefit of sixty-seven years in the cattle business and forty-eight years in the registered Angus business. We appreciate Jim & Angie Munroe and their kids for all of their hard work and dedication here at Diamond D Angus. Mark & Cathy DeBoo 4092 Valier-Dupuyer Road cell dda@3rivers.net 5

I am very sad to report that we lost the 202 bull this summer due to an injury. He was an amazing athlete and a very aggressive breeder. The 202 bull passed on to his offspring, eye appeal, depth of body, very easy fleshing on forage only, calving ease, masculinity in his sons, and femininity in his daughters. His offspring have topped our sale every year that we have offered them. The feet on the 202 bull were as good as we have ever seen. The average birthweight here at Diamond D Angus on his 5 bull calves is 76 and the average on his 7 heifer calves is 72. The 202 bull was 6 years old. To say he was a breeding machine would be an understatement. As a two-year-old he bred 75 out of 77 three-year-olds. At the age of 3 he bred 77 out of 80 three-year-olds. On the first jump at the semen collection center, he produced just under 500 straws of very concentrated semen. If you want fertile replacement females, you need to use very fertile bulls. Diamond D Angus has always bred cattle with longevity and fertility. Josh Freiberger, owner of Hague Angus Ranch, bought our DDA Stella 443 cow for a foundation for his registered herd. She is the mother of the 202 bull. She is a beautiful cow at the age of 4. 8K DDA B&T 8K DOB: 5//200 Reg #: Tattoo: 8K LONESTAR OF WYE BANJO OF WYE UMF 643 BLACKBIRD OF WYE UMF 5362 # D D A BANJO 0 BLACK BROWE JUMBO 37P MISS DIAMOND JUMBO 587 MISS DIAMOND CHANCE 334 PARAMONT AMBUSH 272 # HIGH VALLEY 4C6 AMBUSH # HIGH VALLEY GLORIA Q2 DDA GALATEA 03 BANJO OF WYE UMF 643 # D D A GALATEA 423 GALATEA DIAMOND Wean Ratio Calving Ease Cow/Calf Ratio 53% Sons selling: 40U, 72U, 9U, 96U, 3U. Our DDA B&T 8K has proven to be a very valuable herd sire for us. His sons look like herd bulls and his daughters are very feminine mother cows with good udder structure. His offspring are very soft on temperament and phenotypically, are very correct. He is long bodied with great depth and thickness. The average birth weight on his 77 sons has been 78 pounds, all falling between 69 and 85 pounds. He has sired 9 heifer calves here at Diamond D Angus with an average birthweight of 75 pounds. He is double bred Banjo of Wye. The end of a very successful road for our great 03 cow has come. She was the mother to 8K and one of our favorite cows in the herd. In 206 during a bad snow storm, we found her not able to stand. She was just shy of her 7th birthday. Diamond D Angus will be using this great sire very heavily in the upcoming years. 6

Bar Lad 428 traces back many times to the great Southolm Bar Lad 50D. He is a great example of why we have chosen not to select on EPD numbers. If you breed for EPD numbers, I am sure you would not even stop to take a second look at this bull. Some of the best maternal bulls we have used in the past have EPD numbers in the toilet. If you look over history of what has and is still happening in the Angus breed, the cattle that have been bred for EPD numbers do not have the capability of staying in production for long enough to be profitable in a cow/calf operation. It is my job, as a seed stock producer, to use genetics that help keep cow/calf producers in business. We believe if you do not have decent longevity, it is impossible to stay profitable in an average price range like we are in now. Fairview Bar Lad 428 has some of the great foundation genetics that my grandfather and father started with. We are still lining up some of the great old cow families that trace to these same reliable genetics today. In fact our old 368 cow lineage has some of the very same time tested names in her pedigree. We have a daughter of the 368 still in production at 8 years old and our vet called breed again this winter. I told him how old she was and he could hardly believe it. We also had another daughter to the 368, 580, stay in production until she was 20. One of the significant breeding strategies of the late Larry Leonhardt was to use linebreeding and inbreeding to create genetics that enhanced the odds of making his preferred maternal kind. Bulls like John Dockweiler s Fremont were bred with the Shoshone tradition of concentrating the influence of the good cows in mind. Fremont s female lineage includes Shoshone Ester 36 six times, Shoshone Ester 328 twice, Shoshone Prudence 657 three times, Shoshone Prudence 644 once, Blackcap Forever 485 three times as well as Shoshone Frances 6357, the dam of Diamond D herd sire Shoshone Larry selected his herd sires imagining their female ancestry as a pen of females. John Dockweiler commented, It takes time to concentrate genetically superior cows into every slot of an animal s recent recorded ancestry. Fremont s first daughters are exemplifying the qualities that Larry Leonhardt and all who appreciate maternal genetics are breeding for. Expect soft temperaments, great maternal instinct, moderate size, exceptional udders and the trouble free characteristics of Shoshone genetics. 38 Thursday November 8, 208 Mother to 39U Mother to 27U Mother to 32U Mother to 64U Red Angus Herd Dispersal After 8 years working on our Red Angus project, Diamond D Angus has chosen to sell our entire Red Angus herd, only to save work and better manage our grass. In recent years, we have been doing multi-sire breeding groups in order to manage our grass better and because we believe in the natural selection process of having the dominant bulls sire most of the calves. Mother Nature knows more about breeding selection than any of us cowboys. It is painful sometimes to have injuries on our favorite bulls, however this is part of their life cycle. By selling the Red Angus group, we will have one less group of cattle to manage in the summer time when we are trying to high-density graze. We will then be able to increase our Black Angus herd. 4M RDDA 507 Sons selling: 6U, 24U, 33U, 48U, 87U, 5U, 59U, 07U, 2U, 8U, 72U. Just because the RDDA X Factor is unique in his breeding does not make him valuable. It is because he is unique AND phenotypically very correct. He has what the breed is lacking. He may be the best footed Red Angus bull we have ever seen. He is 4 frame and very stout. He is very masculine and a great athlete. We have already sold semen on this great bull in South America. This is a very rare opportunity to buy a bull that is this unique to the breed and has already proven his soundness. Diamond D Angus will sell full possession and keep 50 percent revenue sharing interest RDDA X FACTOR 4M DOB: 5/2/202 Reg #: RAAA Tattoo: 4M EBLIS OF CLASSLOCHIE EVESUND OF DUPPLIN EVERGREEN 3 OF DUPPLIN BEVY OF NEWARK EJETA OF TEMPLEHOUSE EJETA OF BANKHEAD BB L902 BBRED 5236 BB 5236 BBRED 605 MM 369 SALEE 907 RDDA MABEL 0 RDDA HUSTLER 9G RDDA MABEL Wean Ratio Calving Ease Cow/Calf Ratio 67%

42 Thursday November 8, 208 If you want to produce cows that will last a long time, it is important to use bulls from a herd that has cows that have a proven record of calving every year on time for 0 or more calves. We cull our herd for udder quality and temperament and refuse to trim feet. If an animal needs its feet trimmed, we eliminate it. Most pure bred producers will make excuses for the problems you see on their cattle. The reality is almost everything you see is a result of the genetics. When you listen to a producer and they talk mostly about performance and EPD numbers, chances are they have left most functional traits behind and the genetics will not last for many years. Beef Image Analysis (BIA) Ultrasound BIA live animal carcass ultrasound is an automated, chuteside software system that captures images and calculates trait measurements on an objective basis. The traits determined by BIA ultrasound software are: Ribeye Area... (REA) Backfat Thickness... (BF) Ribeye Area/Hundred lbs Live Weight... (REA/CWT) Percent Intramuscular Fat... (% IMF) Ribeye Shape Score... (RES) Stress Score... (SS) Tenderness Score... (TEND). 40 RES = Ribeye Shape Score Indicative of desired shape of the ribeye muscle. Correlated to eventual Yield Grade, Cutability, and % Retail Product. Score ranges from 0.0 to.0. Acceptable score is 0.35 or greater. Ideal score is 0.50 or greater. SS = Stress Score Correlated to immune system strength of calf. Score ranges from = No Stress 20 = Slight Stress 30 = Slightly Moderate Stress 40 = Moderate Stress 50 = Severe Stress Impacts DTF, ADG, WDA, TCOG, Health Costs, QG, and YG. Ideal score is 20 or less. Ultrasound Explanation TEND = Tenderness Score Correlated to actual Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WB) in carcass ribeye steak at 2th rib location. Correlation Coefficients between WB and TEND currently average Score ranges from = Very Tender 20 = Tender 30 = Slightly Tender 40 = Slightly Tough 50 = Tough Ideal score is 25 or less. Acceptable score in yearling bulls is 28 or less. The ultrasound data on the following page is color coded. This is to assist you in analyzing the data quickly. When a box is: BLUE it indicates superior numbers for that trait. GOLD it indicates good numbers for that trait. WHITE. it indicates acceptable numbers for that trait. Numbers shown in red are unacceptable. You will notice the range for the colors is different for bulls than heifers. Due to the testosterone level in bulls, they show less marbling and also less in the tenderness score.

44 Do you feel you ve been led down a rabbit hole? Angus cattle used to be noted for their function, fertility, and longevity. As a result of the number chase game, many Angus cattle have totally lost the characteristics that made them popular in the first place. They are not bred to last. This is our 824 cow. She turned 20 years old this spring. She is in almost every Diamond D Angus pedigree, some many times. If you would like to add some longevity and function back in your herd, please contact us. Production Sale November 8, 208 at the ranch in Valier, MT 00 long yearling forage developed bulls 70 bred heifers 70 bred cows In conjunction with our annual sale, we are dispersing our entire Red Angus herd.
