I ve had a busy month in October, with great rallies and many interesting Club visits. Thank you to all Lions and Lionesses who attended the rallies. Thanks also to all the Clubs I have visited so far for the great welcome and gifts I have received. Last but not least, thank you to all the Clubs who donated baskets for the State Council meeting. I have had the pleasure this month of installing two new members at Manheim Township Lions Club and one new member at Paradise Township Lions Club. I also had the honor of presenting a Proud Lion and a Proud Sponsor Award at the Intercourse Lions Club. Many thanks to Lion Bob Weaver, District Food Drive Chairperson, and the members of the East Cocalico Lions, Ephrata Lions, Baron Stiegel Lions, Reinholds Lions, and Schoeneck Lions for a very successful joint food drive. The efforts of these Lions provided 12,200 pounds of food and $ in cash for the Ephrata Area Social Service Food Bank. Great job, Lions! Congratulations to the Intercourse Lions Club for giving 100% to the Governor s goals. We are coming into the giving season, so give someone a chance to join your Lions Club. 2 PAGE 2 DISTRICT 14 - DETAILS NOVEMBER 2012 Greetings from 1st Vice District Governor Greetings to all Lions, Lionesses, and Leos! If you read this after the first of November, all of our District Rallies will be over. Great job to all of the Region Chairpersons and their respective Zone Chairpersons! It was a great time at all of them to see who received the honors bestowed on them by the District for their work in Lions Year with Past District Governor Bob Eberly. I am sure he had a tough time deciding who, as there are many great Lions that could have been selected. Great job, PDG Lion Bob! This past weekend was Council Meeting at Grantville. It was a great time, as I spent most of the time in training for the District Governor's position. It is amazing how much information is given to us to be able to handle whatever problem comes up at any given time. It is also a time when my council can meet to decide what our theme shirt will be when we head to Hamburg, Germany, in July. I have never been out of the Untied States, and I can hardly wait for the trip. But there are other things at a Council meeting weekend that makes it worth the trip: FELLOWSHIP! Yes, this is a great place to meet Lions, Lionesses, and Leos. The information that one can get from the ideas of other Lions is unbelievable. If you have not attended a Council Meeting, check the Calendar of Events on page 1 of this newsletter for the date and place of the next one. FUN. Are you having fun at your club meetings? If not, look for programs and activities for your club to get involved in and start having fun. With the upcoming holidays, I am sure there will be something that your club can do to bring a smile to the faces of the Lions walking into the meeting and for them to keep that smile when they leave for home. Look for programs that are deals with the community that your club is in. For example, in Millersville there are many speakers about the history of the area that we can get through the Historical Society. We need to bring FUN back into our meetings. I hope the Lions who are hunters will be lucky this year and bag whatever game they are going after. I realize that 99 % of hunters just take a walk in the woods, and some never leave the cabin, so make sure you take your Lions Club Newsletter, the District Newsletter, and your Lion magazine along for all of your cabin mates to read. Then you can pop the question: "Would like to join the Lions Club?" Have a great Thanksgiving, and if you need help on anything in Lions, I am in the book. YOU have the chance to win 3 tickets to the Pittsburgh Steelers Opening Home Game of the 2013 season! YOU could be seated in Section 525, end zone, for this game (date to be announced)! Most Club Presidents have tickets, and your Region or Zone Chairperson may also have tickets. The drawing will take place at the June 2 Cabinet meeting. A pack of 6 raffle tickets will make a nice stocking stuffer for any football fans on your Christmas list. 3 PAGE 3 DISTRICT 14 - DETAILS NOVEMBER 2012 Thoughts from the 2nd Vice District Governor Lions, Lionesses, and Leos, The month of October has gone by in a flash. By the time you read this almost all the rallies will be over. Congratulations to all the deserving Lions who received awards and recognitions for their excellent service to their communities. Also I would like to say well done to the Region and Zone chairpersons for putting together these great events in our District. Your hard work is appreciated. As we enter November, things become a little less hectic, and we have time to enjoy the upcoming holidays with family and friends. It is also a time to reach out to our neighbors and lend a helping hand. In this Lion s quarter, many of our Clubs will reach out to those in need over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays to make life a little easier. Some of the wonderful things being done include delivering food boxes to needy families, purchasing toys for children who would otherwise not get anything, ringing the Salvation Army bell, and sending packages to soldiers overseas, to name just a few. As you sit down at your Thanksgiving meal this year, be very thankful for all you have, and know that by serving as a Lion, Lioness, or Leo, you have given someone else the ability to be thankful for what they have on their table. You will get to meet and share ideas with other Club Officers along with your District Leaders. There is no such thing as a Natural Born Leader. Leaders are developed, willing to learn and share, and always in the quest for new ideas. As a Club Leader, if you feel your club is always doing the same things the same old way and maybe getting in a rut, your District Global Leadership Team urges you to find out about the Club Excellence Process (CEP). Many clubs have gone through this process and showed excellent improvement. Many times we forget about the individual Lions and whether we are meeting their needs on what they feel a service organization is all about. Do your community leaders have input into what types of services your club is performing? CEP addresses these issues and many more. Give it a try and your Good Club will become an Excellent Club. 5 PAGE 5 DISTRICT 14 - DETAILS NOVEMBER 2012 The Lioness Corner The Fab 4 Lioness Rally was a great night, with all Lioness Clubs represented. In case you are wondering, there are 107 Lionesses, but I m hearing talk of new members and prospective Lionesses in the offing!! Tony Farino provided our entertainment, along with Millersville Lioness Patti who danced with Tony, and at one point a group of Lionesses were kicking up their heels to Tony s rendition of New York, New York! IPDG Lion Bob gave out some outstanding awards: Heidelberg Township Lioness Peg Welch received a PA Fellow, Heidelberg Township Lioness Judy Werner was named Lioness of the Year, Blue Ball Lioness Sharon Pickle received a Dan Walter Award, ( Oh my was her comment), and Lititz Lioness President Estelene Ladd became a Melvin Jones Fellow! Congrats to all deserving Lionesses. A big thank you goes out to District Governor Joan, members of her Cabinet, Committee Members, and PDGs who came out to celebrate the Lionesses of District 14D. CLUB NEWS Blue Ball Lioness Club will hold their annual Vera Bradley/Brighton Jewelry Bingo on Sunday, Nov. 25, at the New Holland Liberty Fire Hall. The cost is $20.00, doors open at noon, and games start at 1:30. Refreshments will be available. Call Lioness Sally at (717) for more info. Heidelberg Township Lioness Club will hold their 28 th Xmas Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 1, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Main St.(Rte. 222), Schaefferstown. Crafters will be selling their items, a Basket Theme Auction will take place, refreshments and Xmas Cookies will be sold. It all begins at 8 a.m. For information call Lioness Pres. Judi at (717) The Lititz Lioness Club had a successful Rock-A-Thon in downtown Lititz on Oct. 12. The Club thanks District Governor Joan for pledging and rocking and all other Cabinet Members for their pledges. Lititz Lion President Jean Brandt rocked and brought pledges from the Lititz Lions and some of those Lions spent time on the rocking chairs. The Club may see some new members from this event, proving once again that it pays to be out there in the public eye! Millersville Lioness Club is gearing up for their Breakfast With Santa to be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, at St. Paul s Lutheran Church, Millersville, from 8 to 11 a.m. There will be pancakes, sausage, fruit. and beverages. The cost is $4.00 for adults and $6.00 for children age 12 and under, who receive a picture with Santa and a small gift. For reservations call President Rose at or mvillerose@gmail.com. Baron Stiegel Lions Club will hold a Buffet Breakfast on Sunday, November 4, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Brickerville Fire Hall located on Hopeland Road at Route 322. A large selection of breakfast items will be featured, all you can eat for $8. Child meals are half price. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Lions or at the door. Contact Lion Glenn Aungst at (717) for additional information. Breakfasts will continue on the first Sunday of the month in January, February; and March. East Cocalico Lions Club will hold an Oyster/Ham/Shrimp Dinner on Sat., November 3, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Reamstown Fire Hall, 12 W Church St, Reamstown. Oyster/Ham/Shrimp platters, Oyster/Ham sandwiches, hamburgers, and french fries are on the menu. Takeouts are available. Garden Spot Lions Club will host a health screening on November 3, and November 8 to 10 the club will hold a sandwich sale. Heidelberg Lioness Club is taking orders for Shady Maple pies. Orders are due by Monday, Nov 5, and pies will be delivered on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Contact any club member to place an order. Lancaster Lions Club will ring the bell for the Salvation Army on Friday, November 30, noon to 5 p.m. On Saturday, December 22, club members will spread Christmas cheer to residents of Conestoga View. And the club s nut sale fundraiser is in full swing. Contact any club member for details and to place an order. Lititz Lions Club will take part in Go Further with Ford night at Keller Bros. Ford on November 15, 4 to 8 p.m. The club will receive a donation for every individual who visits the dealer during that time. There is no obligation, and the 2013 models will be on display. Manheim Lions Club will host another B.R.A.K.E.S. Teen Pro-Active Driving School on Nov. 3 and 4. The club invites all other 14-D clubs to come and observe one of the four 4-hour sessions. Salisbury Township Lions Club will hold their annual basket and gift card bingo on Saturday, November 10, at Gap Fire Company, 802 Pequea Avenue. 8 PAGE 8 DISTRICT 14 - DETAILS NOVEMBER 2012 Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! District 14D was the host for the 2012 October Council meeting in Grantville October The weekend was a huge success! We received numerous compliments. A big THANK YOU goes to all the clubs and individuals who sent baskets for our raffle to cover the expenses for the weekend. We had a total of 37 baskets. We even had a donation from District 14E, DG Dave Stitely and his partner in service, Lion Kathy. A very big THANK YOU to all the Lions who helped make this weekend a success. Lions Sharon Lesher and Jamie Carpenter were in charge of the baskets. They received help from Bonnie Eberly, Roberta Peters, IPDG Bob Eberly, PDGs Bruce Carpenter, Bosh Lesher, and Ron Peters. PDGs Bob Eberly and Bruce Carpenter were in charge of hospitality night, and they planned and executed a fun event. (Check out the photos of our dancing DGs and air band!) PDG Ron Peters secured the donated chips and pretzels for the evening. CC Steve Benedict and Lion Sue were in charge of Saturday evening s banquet, with PDG Jim and Lion Gloria Bolin helping to hand out tickets. I counted 22 Lions and one Lioness from 14 D in attendance. These Lions also contributed to the success of the weekend. Thanks goes to DG Joan Rohrbach, who was busy attending the two sessions of council and welcoming everyone to the meetings and banquet. Keeping DG Joan company at the meetings were VDGs Jack Sauders and Deb Burkholder. In addition to the Lions mentioned above, Lions Chester Stoltzfoos, Jane Newcomer, Colin Barnstable, Ted Anspach, Scott Lyons, and Joanna Smith and PDGs Richard Rudy, Gerry Reuter, Eleanor Reuter, and Dale High and Lioness Patti Sauders attended. Your attendance and hard work were greatly appreciated by the Lions who traveled from the far reaches of our state to take part in the meetings and events. PDG Leonard Smith

Some thoughts about recruiting brought to you by the Global Membership Team The number one reason why people do not join Lions is simply because they have never been asked! 1. Don t take it personally - Just because you are passionate about service and helping others, unfortunately does not mean that others are. 2. Listen to the rejection carefully - What is the prospective member telling you? Perhaps now is not a good time for them to join due to finances or busy schedules. When appropriate, keep them informed of upcoming club events, and continue to invite them to participate in select service projects until the time is right for them to join. 3. Be confident - Lions Clubs have accomplished so much over the last 95 years. Be proud to be a part of our wonderful organization. Share your enthusiasm with others. 4. Know that everyone experiences rejection - Don t worry, it is not just you. Everyone experiences rejection and in many different circumstances. Smile and move on. Remember, during its first year of business, the Coca Cola Company sold only 400 bottles of soda - the company persisted. 5. Try again - The more no s you get, the closer you are to getting a yes. Did you see this in LION, November issue, Overheard page 8? We ve been born with sight. We have all our senses. Following are instructions on how to print these reports. Note: These instructions are based on using Internet Explorer as your browser. Other browsers might be different. Also, depending what version of Explorer you are using, some terminology might be different, but it should be similar. 14 PAGE 14 DISTRICT 14 - DETAILS NOVEMBER 2012 LIONS COIN BILL PASSES IN UNITED STATES CONGRESS Oak Brook, Illinois, USA, September 25, 2012 The United States Congress passed the Lions Clubs International Century of Service Commemorative Coin Act. This was the result of the tireless work of Lions club members across the United States. With the passage of H.R in the House and S in the Senate, the bill will become a law pending President Barack Obama s signature. The US$1 coin will be available in 2017 to celebrate Lions Clubs International s 100th anniversary. In addition to highlighting a century of charitable services to people in need, US$10 of every commemorative coin sold without any cost to taxpayers will be donated to Lions Clubs International Foundation. These funds will support ongoing Lions programs that assist the visually impaired, disabled, youth and those affected by major disasters. Throughout the last century, Lions clubs have played a lead role in the fight against blindness by preventing vision loss for more than 30 million people. Additionally, Lions efforts have saved the sight of more than 14 million children through eye screenings, surgeries, vaccinations and other treatments. This coin will gain exposure to those unfamiliar with our organization, encourage Lions to move forward with their selfless volunteer service and will raise critical resources to continue to help those in need, said Lions Clubs International President Wayne A. Madden. They're Paradise Proud! Lucky for this club, they have a new member who has a shiny yellow truck! The club also operated a Punkin Putt game during the fair, which is popular with families, since every child gets a prize.

15 PAGE 15 DISTRICT 14 - DETAILS NOVEMBER 2012 Announcing Lions District 14 D Nominating Committee Meeting Purpose of the meeting is to verify the qualifications of the candidates for the office of District Governor and 1st and 2nd Vice District Governor for the Lions year The nominating committee will meet November 15, 2012, for the purpose of reviewing prospective candidates written qualifications and intentions for the office they are seeking and to ascertain that they meet the requirements listed below. Qualifications: Each candidate for the office of District Governor, 1st Vice District Governor, and 2nd Vice District Governor shall 1. Be an active member in good standing of a chartered Lions Club in good standing in the district. 2. Secure the endorsement of their club or a majority of the clubs in their district. 3. Have served or will have served at the time he/she takes office as District Governor, 1st Vice District Governor, and 2nd Vice District Governor. (A) As president of a Lions Club for a full term or major portion thereof and as a member of the Board of Directors of a Lions Club for no less than 2 additional years. (B) As Zone Chairperson or Region Chairperson or Cabinet Secretary and/or Treasurer for a full term or major portion thereof. (C) None of the above qualifications shall have been accomplished concurrently. (D) In all cases, after the prospective candidates have been duly qualified by the members of the nominating committee, such candidates shall not announce said candidacy prior to the November Cabinet meeting. The candidates will not campaign until after January 1st of the following year. This includes the mailing or handing out of any announcements in the district. Please note: (1) The intentions of the candidate's home club to present a member of their club as a candidate should be announced at the November Cabinet meeting. This Red Velvet Whoopie Pie pin is the second in a series of three pins the District is selling to promote and raise funds for your 2015 State Convention, which District 14-D and its clubs are hosting. We encourage all Lions, Lionesses, and Leos to purchase one of these pins to help us raise the funds needed to host your convention.
