District 11-A2 Roaring News Serving Oakland and Macomb Counties September Happy almost Fall, Lions, Lioness, and Leos!! Okay, we don t know how the heck almost fall happened, but it did. And Lions, HERE WE GO!!!! I just want to put this out there for some who missed the last cabinet meeting. These two little stories are the reason all of us do what we do. Back on July 5, President Eileen Maciasz and Lion Jim, her husband, from the Sterling Heights club, got an request from Nikki Nathanielsz, who is from ESight Eyeware. Nikki had been helping Dylan Rheker, a 14 year old boy from Chesterfield, to raise funds for esight for a pair of electronic glasses that would help him to see. Dylan was diagnosed with brain cancer and subsequently lost most of his vision due to a tumor found on his optic nerve. Dylan was legally blind with a visual acuity of 20/1400. As a result, he could only see the world around him in a blur of shapes, colors and motions. On behalf of the Rheker family, Nikki reached out to the Chesterfield Club and they donated $1, When this assignment was given to the Sterling Heights club, Lions Eileen and Jim both went to work. They made calls and visits to clubs. Inside of four weeks, they came up with the money, plus some! Miraculously, Dylan got his esight glasses, which provide him with a visual acuity of 20/100. His whole family was absolutely blown away by the results, and they cannot thank the Lion clubs enough for their donations. I want to personally thank Lion President Eileen and Lion Jim for the quick response and turn-around for young Dylan.
I also would like to thank the following clubs for the monies they donated to this endeavor: Chesterfield $1,000.00; Shelby $1,750.00; Sterling Heights $500.00; Fraser $600.00; and Selfridge North Macomb $ The extra funds were paid forward to another child in 11-A1 with the same need for the esight glasses. As Lion President Eileen signed off on her last to me: LIONS ROCK! Yes, yes, we do. I would also like you to know about a little news article in the Madison-Park News which I received from a co-worker (a non-lion). The Madison Heights Lions Club supports youth assistance camp and Eagle Scout projects. The following donations came from their winning 3 rd place in the Michigan Lions Region raffle. They donated $250-$350 to a local Eagle Scout who was working toward a badge with a project involving sending 40 boxes of items to troops overseas. The balance of the winnings went to the summer camp program of Madison Heights Youth Assistance, or MHYA. This helped to cover local children on the waiting list to attend camps. These are the types of stories that we need to publish,as they let people know what Lions do. Get to know your local media!! Make friends with them, and offer these types of goodwill stories. They will eat it up!! I would like to thank PCC Lion Bob Jenkins for doing a great job as the tail twister at the August Cabinet meeting. I know that Lion Bob enjoyed himself. If you didn't notice, Lion Bob had a red pin on stating "NO FINE IS TOO BIG,NO FINE IS TOO SMALL-I FINE THEM ALL". PZC Elliot Hilton we be our tail twister at the October Cabinet meeting so be sure to bring your dollars. Remember all the monies collected by these tail twisters are turned over to the hosting club. That s it for now! Please get on PCC Lion Frank s list for all the upcoming district events and kick off dinners coming soon. Remember to JUST ASK someone if they want to belong to the best and largest service organization in the world: the LIONS. DG Lion Jack Patton
Lions Clubs International As I travel throughout the district, I notice the incorrect use of the Lions Clubs International logo. Lions Clubs International has a resource to dictate the correct size, color, and font of the Lions Clubs signature depending on what is being produced. At the top of the page you will see Lions Clubs International s signature. The signature is composed of the Lions Clubs International s emblem and the nameplate, Lions Clubs International. The yellow accent bar is optional, and it could also be extended further to the top of the page. If you want to know International s preferred way of displaying the signature, search for LCI Graphic Identity Branding Manual on their website. A few months ago, I said I would review the MyLion for web that was supposed to come out in July Well, it s September and it is still not out. But I just heard (from the internet so it has to be true), MyLion for web should be out in October of I would be leery about switching over right away because chances are there will be glitches. If you want to learn more about MyLion, mylci, or anything in Lions Clubs International, please visit YouTube or VIMEO. They both offer videos ranging from membership to tutorials to the International convention to President Gudrun Yngvadottir s message. I am looking for members and leaders to be a part of the District district are open and available to those that qualify. If interested, please call me or send a text or to my info listed. Scott E. 4 2VDG Leo Schaefer Well here we are at the end of summer. Fall is on its way and so many things are happening around the District! Recent events include the Romeo Peach Festival (which was held on Aug.30 Sept. 3), the Richmond Good Old Days Festival (held from Sept.6 9), the District Camp-Out from Sept 7 8, and the Back to the 80 s Road Rally in Fraser on September 8 th. There are plenty of Fund Raisers going on this fall including pancake breakfasts, car shows, euchre games, and spaghetti dinners. These are all good opportunities to invite a friend to go with you and to invite them to join a Lions club. Important Dates for the District Sept. 16 th. Diabetes Walk in Detroit (JDRF) Sept.19 th. Region I Meeting Canterbury Village in Lake Orion Sept U.S. / Canada Forum Columbus, Ohio The project Kidsight Trailer has been busy. It was at the Armada Fair, Romeo Peach Festival and at the Richmond Good Old Days. We are still Looking for Lion members to help out with giving all the small children the chance to have good eyesight. Enjoy the rest of the warm weather. See you at the Region Meeting! 2 nd.vdg Leo Reminder Lion Leo and Lion Dave will be at all Region Meetings to collect used eye glasses. Please bring your glasses in sealed boxes and without cases. They also will collect any used hearing aids.
Notes from Lioness Liaison Angie Boomer... As the summer comes to a close and the kids all head back to school, I hope that everyone had an enjoyable summer and had time to spend with family and friends. With the end of summer, the new Lioness year starts back up again in full force. September doesn t disappoint as it is a busy month full of meetings. The Lioness Forum will be held at Leader Dog in Rochester on Monday, September 24 th. There will be tours of the facility from 6pm until 7pm and the gift shop will also be open for that hour. Dinner will be provided by the Lake Orion Lioness Club while desserts and beverages will be provided by the Macomb Township Lioness Club. I hope to see many of you there. The first round of Region meetings is also coming up in September; Region III on Thursday, September 6 th, Region I on Wednesday, September 19 th, and Region II on Monday, September 24 th. Unfortunately, there is a scheduling conflict with the Region II meeting. However, if the Region II Lioness Clubs can submit their club report forms to me or to Region Chair Kathy Connolly prior to the meeting then we can make sure to have the report read at the Region meeting. By now you should all have received your registration information in the mail for the upcoming Michigan Lioness Conference which will be held November 2 nd and 3 rd at the Holiday Inn in Muskegon. I am looking forward to attending this year and hopefully we can get a good turnout from our District. Upcoming club activities: Macomb Twp Lioness Euchre Tournament on September 23 at North Ave (between 23 and 24-Mile Rds). Registration at 1:00 pm and play starts at 2 p.m. A light lunch, snacks and beverages will be served. Cost is $12 per player. Call Lioness Fran Black ( ) or Lioness Judy Kukuk ( ) for further information. Eastpointe Lioness Club will be holding its 15 th Annual Golf Scramble Sunday, September 30 th For more information call Diane Thank you to all the clubs for your participation! Angie Boomer, Lioness Liaison aboomer97@gmail.com (248)
Many thanks to Lion Larry Cole, Membership Statistician, for providing this information.. The Rochester Lions Club welcomes James Roe, sponsored by Timothy Brooks.
Project Kidsight Update First and foremost, I owe an apology to Lion Dave Rinke and the Armada Lions Club. Arrangements were made to move the Kidsight trailer from the Armada fair grounds to a Lions house before taking it to the Romeo Peach Festival. I totally forgot about that and when Lion Dave went to get the trailer on Monday it was already gone. We were ready to contact the police and I still do not recall making these arrangements. I am sorry this happened and I will make sure I write things down in the future. No excuses but there was a lot happening in the past few weeks as I got into the details of this project. The Kidsight Army is working hard to fight childhood vision issues and below are the numbers to date: July 349 people screened with 48 referrals August to date 194 People screened with 49 referrals A few events in August remain open and the numbers will be reported next month. There are many ways you can join the Kidsight Army. Listed below are just some of opportunities for you to participate: PK Screener Requires training Technical Assistant Requires training on the documentation Zone Camera Coordinator Custody of camera assigned to your zone Club PK coordinator Coordinate screening activities for your club This is a district project and we would like to have a screener in each Lions Club so you can better serve your community. Your Board of Directors include: Kay Furby, Rhonda Furby, Paul Hemeryck, Kimberly Thiede, Jan and Frank Cunningham, Kim and Jim Bone, Bob Erickson, Bob Bobee, Leo Schaefer, and most recently Fran Black. Please contact them if you have any issues. If you need any additional information please contact me. Yours in service Lion Jim jamespettinato@att.net
