LIFE House in the News LIFE House pulls 13 dogs from Rockcastle Co. Animal Shelter!! Born in September 2005, Zoie came to us as a kitten and was soon adopted. Her owner passed away, and now Zoie is back at LIFE House. She is looking for another family that will share their home and give her lots of love. Zoie is a very petite, cuddly, gentle, playful kitty who loves to have her head and neck stroked. If there is something new in the room, Zoie is the first to investigate! The dogs would have been put down as early as Tuesday morning. But the public stepped in, so far adopting 18 of 55 endangered dogs. It starts with renovating the aging kennels, a twoday process that has put these pups smack in the middle of a growing controversy. This is just one of half a dozen sent into the LEX18 inbox. Animal lovers upset about the number of dogs the shelter plans to euthanize because it quote," will not be able to house animals until the work is completed." "Help these dogs find a home because eventually, if they're not adopted out, they will have to be put down", Carloftis says, who's hoping his plea to the press will rescue the 37 dogs still here. If it hasn't already - "The publicity we got today may have been negative, but the word has got out and I have moved a lot of animals out of here today and found animals a lot of homes," says Carpenter. A no-kill facility in Frankfort called L.I.F.E House for Animals has also stepped up and is now fostering 13 dogs. LIFE House was the venue for a grand birthday party held for Ms. Taylor Hamm, who, along with her many friends, family and canine companions enjoyed a delicous buffet followed by cupcakes for dessert. Taylor, her younger sister Kelsey and her parents, LeAnn and Wendel, are supporters of LIFE House and often visit us to play with our feline and canine guests. Taylor is now 11 years old! Instead of receiving gifts at this birtday party, Taylor requested her friends and family provide gifts for our LIFE House residents. What a great thing to do and we appreciate this jesture very much! Congratulations Taylor from all of us here at LIFE House! Billy was nominated due to his special care of our dogs; feeding, watering, walking, and giving them personal attention and love. Congratulations, Billy! On March 20, 2011, the first day of spring, L.I.F.E. House for Animals will kick-off the "Fitness with Fido" walking program. Members of the community will be invited to walk our canine guests throughout Prevention Park on weekdays, and each weekend at one of the many parks in Franklin county! Canine participants will wear vests donated by our Crafty Volunteers, and Human participants will be give a pedometer to guage their distance! Dr. Burchett will teach us about the benefits of having our pets spayed/ neutered, and will dispel some of the meet our vets >>> myths associated with the procedures. 3 Success Stories The best part of L.I.F.E. House is getting to see the happiness an animal brings to its new family. Molly and Trixie waited and finally found forever homes. ask the experts >>> Q: A: Why do cats knead and head butt? Molly was one of two Boston Terriers that were turned into us by their owners. Within a few days, volunteers were in love with both Molly and Millie. Both were adopted within 2 weeks and Molly went to Ohio. She is living there with her two brothers, who are also rescues. Hey Tanya, Just thought I would say hello and let you know Molly is doing fine. She has fit in well with the other dogs and loves to cuddle. Thanks for helping get her! Have a nice holiday! Sandi Beier So, Trixie is in a new home, near Bristol TN. The adoption took awhile with the snow and weather, but finally in January, Trixie went home with her "brother" Ringo. The two love to play with toys, tug of war, and sleep on their own chair. Trixie's owner, Lisa, is ecstatic and loved her from the moment she saw her. If you remember, Trixie was from a high-kill shelter and was slated as a "death row dog". LIFE house pulled her and within a few weeks, she found her forever home. We love you Trixie! Be good! Most people believe that cats will often knead as a "comfort" gesture that cats remember from when they are babies. Nursing kittens use similar paw and arm movements to stimulate milk flow from their mothers' breasts. A kneady cat is generally a happy cat. In my experience, cats head butt people they feel comfortable with and love. They also have glands in their foreheads that can secrete and subtle scent referred to as pheromones. Pheromones allow cats to communicate with each other. Some cats will head butt labeling you as "taken". When your kitty rubs against you, he is in effect claiming you as his own. Trunk or Treat Finding An Agent That s Right For You A hauntingly good time was had by all at Trunk or Treat on Halloween, October 31, Tuyen Dudinskie of the First Church of God, 1029 Burlington Lane in Frankfort, invited L.I.F.E. House for Animals to participate in the church s annual fun and candy filled event! A steady stream of ghosts, goblins, animals of all sorts, and cartoon and anime characters made the rounds for about two hours, while others were in the background doing the Chicken Dance to some lively Polka music! Hot chocolate was the perfect beverage served on this chilly evening! Our adorable cattle dog mix, Rascal, attended the affair dressed to the nines in his Tuxedo! This pooch, on a first-name-basis with all the passers-by, was the hit of the evening! Jennifer and Mackenzie Chagolla; Rosanna Shain; and Paul and Dottie Stumbo passed out tons of candy, as well as L.I.F.E. House literature. We re already invited to join the fun in 2011! What a hoot it will be! Money Tree An Money Christmas Tree was brought in by the Department of Health, who had employees donate to us for Christmas.
