Humane Society of Fairfax County NEWSLETTER Dedicated to Rescuing, Housing and Adopting Homeless Animals Adoptions Through June 30, 2005, the Humane Society has adopted out 148 animals into loving homes: 136 cats 7 dogs 2 birds 2 horses 1 rabbit A special thanks to all of our foster homes, home visit volunteers, socializers, outreach program volunteers and adoption placement volunteers. HELPING THE COMMUNITY Since inception, the HSFC has been there to help with abused and abandoned animals whether we took the animals into our care or helped with vet bills for those who could not afford the care, but did not want to give up their animal. Beginning in 2004, we began to track the latter those community members that we have helped with pets that they did not want to give up. PAGE 1

Through June 2005, we provided financial assistance for 4 animals to receive the medical care they needed. This included a young service dog hit by a car that was assigned to a severely epileptic man and a dog suffering from parvo. In addition, we fronted the pet deposit for a family relocating to an apartment so that they could keep their pets. Through May 2005, the feral outreach program trapped, neutered and released (TNR d) and/or helped medically 165 cats and kittens. Through June, we have responded to 2,821 phone calls and 3,331 s. Examples of calls and s received include referrals of 62 low cost spay/neuters, 72 humane education calls and s, 116 requests for wildlife assistance and 9 requests for vet referrals. HUMANE SOCIETY JOINS FORCES TO END PET OVERPOPULATION. The HSFC has always believed in working with others to maximize our efforts to end animal suffering. We are a member of the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Humane Society of the United States, Petfinders, Metro Pets and Save a Pet. We are a registered transfer agency with the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, as well as several other county operated animal shelters. We work with and assist dozens of other animal rescue organizations, breed rescue groups, animal welfare societies, as well as the veterinary community. Our Society has continued to reach out to others to extend assistance for nearly 40 years. To our many partners, regardless of size, we are pleased to be a part of such efforts. Together we have saved many lives. Together we shall save many more. RECENT EVENTS BIG CHANGES & NEW FACES!! If you haven t been to our administrative offices lately, you need to take some time and stop by. Warning.wear your sunglasses! We have two new office managers we d love for you to meet and they have been revamping the offices for weeks. Stacey Overman comes to us from the National Wildlife Federation and has brought with her many exciting and innovative new ideas. She lives with her husband, George, a pug named Lucy and a Manx cat named Tabitha. She shares the position with our own Marlene Hammer, who has been a volunteer with our organization for several years. Marlene is married to our web master, Mike, and they have a rescued lab mix named Shadow. The Hammer Pet Hotel also has daily visitors from Buford and Maxwell, their daughter s 2 dogs. Marlene earned the dubious award of Volunteer of the Year in She has been an invaluable asset to our organization and we are thrilled she has taken on this new role. They are a dynamic duo! Not only do they deserve the Molly Maid award of the year (hence, the sunglasses), but they have totally reorganized our offices and daily procedures. They have double handedly brought us into the computerized world. This is our first job share experience but so far so PAGE 2

good. All aspects are working well. Please stop by to meet them, give them a much-deserved pat on the back and wish them well in their new endeavor. FARM UPDATES Pinch me I must be dreaming! We are finally getting ready to start construction on our new dog kennel. We have all our permits, our general contractor is ready to start digging and the building is on its way to us as we go to press. It may take awhile to complete, but we are so excited that our dream is finally going to be a reality. We hope to have lots of pictures posted on the web site as the work progresses. Make sure to keep our site on speed dial so you won t miss a thing. This project will mean we can help more dogs than ever before. It will also enable us to have a place to hold our own dog adoption open houses and a place for more volunteers to enjoy the animals. We will have a huge volunteer party to celebrate the grand opening event. Hopefully, this will take place in the fall before winter hits. But if it s cold, we won t care because we ll have a nice warm kennel to hold our party in anyway! In other areas of the farm, we have also been pretty busy. We have spread new blue stone gravel around all our gates so the horses will have a dry place to go while pacing to come in for dinner. They always congregate at the gates! We have replaced our old septic tanks for new ones and will be adding an additional septic field for the new kennel. Our lawn mower has been repaired and our two weed eaters are fixed and ready to whack away (we re always looking for good experienced whackers, so give us a call if you have this unique talent). We have new gravel in the existing dog runs and our fences have been given a fresh coat of stain where needed. Two swimming pools are filled and the dogs are living the carefree summer days by jumping in and cooling off. Some dogs haven t quite figured out what these strange wide areas of water are, but they re learning from the more experienced swimmers. They are also enjoying the toys and treats given to them by Brownie Troop 1376 headed by Tawnya Ramey. With the proceeds made from selling Girl Scout cookies, the troops went shopping for all kinds of goodies to give to the animals..and we ve never seen so many dogs smile to get them. ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES WORKDAY HSFC Building Workday: All we can say is WOW! It was hot, hot, hot, but our dedicated volunteers worked anyway. The front entrance looks fabulous. We can hold our heads high and don t have to pretend we re closed when the city comes to inspect properties. A huge thank you to the following sweaty, dusty and poison ivy covered volunteers: Stacey Overman, George Mather, Marlene Hammer, Vicki Kirby, Deb Siluk, Gwynne Mason, Liz Early, Paul Hodges, Avanthi Gopallana, Lasantha Wedande, Allegra Woods, Paula Margus, and Teri Cahow. (please let us know if we missed thanking anyone it was hard to see through all the weeds!) PAGE 3

CARING HANDS Caring Hands Animal Hospital 9th Annual Open House and Adoption Fair: What a wonderful day. There were so many people, lots of special events and so many fun things to do. To top it off, we received a share of the proceeds collected throughout the day and had many applications to adopt some of the cats and dog that attended and were shown that day. Our thanks to the ACAT program for giving up a regular adoption day at PetsMart to attend and the following volunteers who made this day such a success - Mitzi Miller, Cara Donato, Melissa Klein, Christiane Brown and a special thanks to Cindy Burroughs for her leadership role at this event. FARM WORK DAY While it was officially cancelled due to rain, a few dedicated volunteers showed up to spread gravel dust in the dog runs, hang fans in the horse stalls to help keep them cool during the hot summer months, clean the dog penthouse suites, repair the fence line as needed, etc. A special thank you to those who sported a day of rain, mud and other elements to ensure the animals at the farm have nice cozy digs including Cara Donato, Vicki Kirby, Mary Kendall, Tim Tuggle, Rene and Michael Fairlie, Paula Margus, Lasantha Wedande, Avanthi Gopallana, and Jana Martin. THANK YOU S A huge THANK YOU to Ilene Steiman, Equine Sports Massage Therapist, for her magic hands and healing touch. Our horses enjoy her regular visits and they sure seem to act a little younger these days! If you ve been shopping in either of our two thrift stores, Second Chance 1 and Second Chance 2, I hope you ve been able to quench your thirst. We have two new soda machines and our animals will benefit from the profits. So drink up and let us know if you have a special request for your favorite flavors. The eagles have landed at the farm.. human eagles, that is. We were fortunate to be selected to help scouts from Troop 1533 earn their Eagle Scout status. They hammered, sawed and built some much needed equipment for our animals. We now have some wonderful dog platforms. Best of all, they built a beautiful picnic table so we have a place to sit and have a picnic. It was a very busy day for over 25 scouts, but what a wonderful opportunity for us to receive all the efforts of their hard work. A big THANKS to Sam Penny and Scout Troop 1533 for thinking of our animals and us. Also THANKS to Home Depot for donating all the supplies necessary to complete the projects. PETCO made our day with a donation of a very generous check recently. They wanted us to know they appreciated the work we do to help the animals in our community. We want them to know we thank them and can sure use the donation! A special thanks to Ingrid Reid and Kevin Knappmiller for the beautiful photos they shared with us of the cats at the building. A bundle of thanks go to Michael Kidd and Boy Scout Troop 688 for all the work they did at our farm in July. The scouts spent all day cleaning, painting fences and hauling rocks as a service project to earn their Eagle Scout status. They saved us hours of hard work, which enabled us to spend that time playing with the animals instead of breaking our backs doing these odd jobs. What they accomplished in one day would have taken us weeks. We love Scout troops! PAGE 4

On the Thrift Store front, we had some exciting activity at Second Chance 2 in Falls Church recently. Seems one of our community service volunteers was involved with a gang and thought it would be nice for us to have some art work in our bathroom! After the police were notified, they did an investigation and determined who the culprit was and informed us he was indeed a member of a very dangerous countrywide gang. We are a little more careful about our screening process these days for service volunteers. Bowl America in Springfield sent us a generous donation from their annual Bowl at Christmas for Charity event. Thanks bowlers for thinking of us and caring about the animals! Two special volunteers we d like to recognize and give a big thank you to are Avanthi Gopallana and Lasantha Wedande. They have fallen in love with one of our horses, Caz, and have given from their heart and wallet to help with his on-going medical expenses. Caz may not be with us much longer, but he sure knows he s one loved equine. Clifton Saddlery is always thinking of our horses! Their annual sale will benefit us again this year. The generous and multi-talented employees bake goodies to offer for donations to HSFC. They also reserve some of their valuable space for our table of literature, pictures of animals for adoption and of course, lots of baked goods to entice customers. A special thanks to Teresa McDermott who makes all this happen and cares so much for the animals! A special thanks to MARS corporation for a generous grant to the HSFC and their continued support over the years. ANGEL ALERT!!! Liz Early has been volunteering with the HSFC for 3 1/2 years with the Adoptable Cat Action Team (ACAT) program. At the time, she was fostering three cats for a friend who had promised to find them homes. After two months, Liz realized this wasn t going to happen, so she started putting ads up at local veterinary hospitals. HSFC ACAT volunteer, Kim Buzzell, called when she saw the ad and suggested she bring the cats to an adoption event as guests, an on-going service to the public through ACAT. Her first event was at Petco in Baileys Crossroads - two tables, six cages, volunteer Melissa Klein, and Liz. Granted, HSFC did have larger events at our established PetsMart Fair Lakes location on opposite weekends. Liz still marvels at the number of volunteers, cages and felines that now attend our adoption events. The rest is history. Liz is currently an ACAT management team member, adoption event manager, adoption official, ACAT medical director, contracts coordinator and above all, foster parent! She enjoys working with the cats and kittens, doing what she can to find them safe and happy forever homes, and is one of our most experienced cat whisperers!. In addition to her HSFC volunteering, Liz attends the University of Virginia School of Continuing and Professional Studies and will (eventually as she puts it!) receive a Human Resources Management Certificate. She has worked PAGE 5

at a software company in Fairfax, Virginia, for 19 years and is now in their Human Resources department. Congratulations Liz, and thank you for your dedication, commitment and outstanding service. As a token of our appreciation, the HSFC has sent you a flower bouquet for your exceptional performance. WELCOME NEW VOLUNTEERS A big welcome to our newest volunteers at the administrative office: Carey Rubin, Joe Tipton, Kelly and John Katz with their sons Michael and David have been spending a considerable amount of time at the building helping socialize cats, clean, and do office type things to help out our office managers. And as always, we can t thank our tired less wonderful volunteers who have been coming to the building for ages including: Elvira Chapman, Lynn Nelson-Paretta, Vladimir Bridy, Deb and Mike Sulik and everyone else that stops by to spend time with the animals and work in the office. At the farm, our new and very dedicated, longterm volunteers include Jeanne Taylor, Rachel Syska, Paul Hodges, Alexander Decker, Lisa Roman, Jackie Phillips, Steve Thornton, Lauren Deahle, Shannon Catalano, Carol Sullivan, Betsy Thompson, Dan Larivey, Elizabeth Deal, Lisa Del Sordi, Ilene Steiman, Christinia Heddesheimer, Candance Myers,Stefanie Rabadan, Anne-Marie Benedict, Kristin Werner, Margaret Graichen, Laura Efthim, Christina Efthim, Sherry Gilbert, Geri Dolan, Brian Thompson, Kristin Eden, Tim Tuggle, KC Edwards, Jenny Kruger, Lori Madlinger, Avanthi Gopallana and Lasantha Wedande. The horses and dogs are always very happy to see new faces --- it means more attention and more time to play.. Thanks to all of our volunteers. Without you, we couldn t help as many animals as we do. UPCOMING EVENTS VOLUNTEER PICNIC OCTOBER 2, 2005 Come one.come all to the annual HSFC Volunteer Picnic scheduled for Sunday, October 2 from 12 noon 3 p.m. at the farm. Hopefully we ll have some or all of the shell of our kennel constructed. For now mark the date and time on your calendars. More information to follow. CHECK OUR NEW AND IMPROVED WEB SITE! We re still under construction, but take a peek at all the exciting changes taking place. Mike Hammer has been one busy web developer! We ve added lots of cute pictures to our main page, made browsing easier, and this is the first place you ll want to check frequently for any latest happenings or events. The ideas for redesigning our web site are pouring in and Mike is busy at the keyboard. This is going to be an on-going project, but lots of great ideas and changes have already been implemented. Check us out at hsfc.org.give us your feedback.. we are more than happy to hear your ideas and suggestions, too. STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN FOR OUR ADOPTABLE PETS Stop at our administrative offices from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stop at our ACAT (adoptable cat action team) adoption events at area pet stores on the weekends. Look on our web site and listen to WASHFM 97.1 to check out our latest animals available for adoption. This is the busiest time of the year for incoming animals, so please take time to view our vast selection. We may have the perfect companion to make your home complete. PAGE 6

ANNUAL FUNDRAISING EVENTS It s that time of year when we hold several fund raising events. On Saturday, October 8 (rain date Oct. 9) we will participate in the Fairfax City Fall Festival. Our booth is located on University Dr. (the street in back of our administrative offices) and we sell lots of animal related gift items. We have dog breed note cards, our HSFC cookbooks, T-Shirts, and much more. We have time slots in 3-hour increments. This is a great opportunity for you to help us raise money, spread awareness in the community about animal welfare, and get a chance to shop till you drop. Please contact our main offices ( PETS) to sign up for your time slot. It s a really fun day and you ll be able to park in one of the most sought after places that day (our lot!) We also have a booth at the Fairfax High Craft Show on November 19th and 20th. This is a 2-day show so we really need lots of volunteers to help us cover the many hours we need to stay open. This is also a huge craft show and lots of goodies are available to buy. You ll be able to shop and when you re ready for a rest, you can work at our booth to catch your breath. Give the main office a call or them at pets@hsfc.org to book a time slot convenient for you. *Just a reminder: family and friends are more than welcome to help at our events! A SUCCESS STORY Received from a previous adopter. Quite a long time ago now -- I think it was in 1992,I went to a cat adoption event in Northern Virginia. To tell you the truth, my heart is with the alley cats and the ferals, and there s something that divides me from the people who breed cats for image or human-defined perfection or profit. I knew darn well I shouldn t be there. I already had a purely fierce female who d been abandoned, plus a recently trapped feral male -- a gentle soul, fortunately -- and I had my hands full. But there was this little black and white female, another feral who d been trapped (just a little too late to get really socialized to humans, as it turned out). She was terrified. She was using every bit of her energy trying to dig a way out deep into her litter box, or a hole big enough to hide in. I stopped and said something and she lifted up her little bandit-mask face, and I was lost. I never should have done it, but I took her home. After all these years, she s still not a cuddler. She still hides at a knock on the door. It was three or four years before I could even feel that little purrvibration when I touched her; it was even more years before I heard her purr out loud. She s a happy cat, though. Not in a hearts-andlaces valentine way, like I ve had with other cats, but in her own, personal way. If I let the bottom of the food dish show, she s DEMANDING; she can produce a meow several times her own size if service doesn t meet her standards. She comes to be petted only for short intervals, but she comes pretty often. She likes to sit in windows; she doesn t want strangers to see her, but she seems to think that as long as there s glass or a window screen between her and them, she s invisible. She s a lot on my mind lately, because obviously, she s getting up there. She s in good health; but I know I ll lose her, eventually. And after that I don t think I would want to talk about her. And I don t know how much feedback you get from people who adopt, especially this long after the fact, but I thank you for my special girl. PAGE 7

DID YOU KNOW THAT... POTPOURRI OILS CAN BE DANGEROUS TO YOUR PET Potpourri oils contain essential oils, and some products also contain cationic detergents. Some of these oils can cause vomiting, stomach upset, diarrhea and even liver damage. The cationic detergents can burn the mouth and tongue. If your animal comes into contact with these oils, bathe them immediately with a mild dishwashing detergent or baby shampoo. Dry thoroughly to prevent chilling. Always assume your animal has ingested some of the oil and you should offer them milk or water. Examine the animal s mouth and tongue as well. If there is a discoloration of the tongue, a vet s assistance should be sought. Monitor your animal closely and if they become sluggish or weak, salivate excessively or refuses to eat, they should be taken immediately to the vet. In addition, you should contact your vet and/or animal poison center and be ready to list the ingredients of the potpourri to determine if there are cationic detergents in the liquid. (Cat Fancy, June 2001) Believe it or not, but grapes can be toxic and can even cause kidney failure in dogs. If your dog does ingest grapes, you should induce vomiting quickly and contact your vet. (Dog Fancy, July 2004 HEARTWORM DISEASE AFFECTS CATS TOO If your cat exhibits one or more of the following symptoms, ask your veterinarian if he or she will test your cat for heartworm disease. *Coughing *Gagging *Labored breathing *Repeated vomiting *Lack of appetite *Weight loss *Lethargy *Central nervous system disorders *Blindness *Heart murmur Critical indications of heartworm disease: *Pulmonary infarction *Circulatory collapse *Respiratory failure *Sudden death MORE WAYS TO SUPPORT ANIMALS IGIVE.COM If you love to shop on line remember to check out igive.com. Their site has hundreds of stores to select from and a portion of the proceeds benefits our organization. Just delegate the HSFC as the recipient and we will put your donated dollars to work helping our animals. HELP ANIMALS FOREVER! We all desire that our lives will continue to count for good deeds long after we are gone. Those things we care about, and which are dear to our hearts, we support in life and wish for them to continue after our death. We do not want our caring and support to evaporate into thin air after we are gone. This is why some of the Humane Society s friends and supporters have established endowment funds and provided bequests in their estate planning to secure the promise of a safe haven for animals forever. PAGE 8

Your own named endowment fund will be here long after you are gone, and will ensure that you are not forgotten. Estate planned gifts may be established to support the operating needs of the HSFC, or assist in areas of special interest. You may create one now and add to it with an estate gift, or make arrangements to establish one through your will. You can name a fund after yourself or in honor of a loved family member or pet. You can add to an existing fund or create your own. There are many possibilities. Your reach into the future can be a reality. Your influence will continue long after you are gone. The HSFC is recognized as a tax-exempt organization under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. You may wish to discuss your personal gift and tax situation with your attorney, accountant, or financial advisor. We are always willing to assist you in any way you may need us. YOUR NAME IMMORTALIZED! We are taking orders for plaques to be displayed on the wall of our reception room in our new dog kennel. You won t want to miss the opportunity to get in on this great offer. You can buy a plaque with your name on it, your pet s name or someone who you want to recognize. A donation of $ or more will guarantee a space reserved for your plaque. For more information please Vicki Kirby at vkirby@hsfc.org RESCUE MAGNETS AND WRISTBANDS! The HSFC is proud to offer to all our volunteers and supporters a chance to purchase their very own car ribbon magnets and wristbands. The proceeds from the sale of both will benefit all of our animals. Plus, when you display them or wear them, you are educating the public regarding spaying and neutering, as well as promoting the adoption of a pet. We offer two different car ribbon magnets: white with black paw prints stating RESCUE, and blue with white paw prints stating PLEASE SPAY AND NEUTER. The car magnets sell for $3.50 each. The wristbands are really cool you ll be the envy everywhere when wearing these! We have two to choose from: bright blue and white or red, white and blue striped. These have Adopt a Pet printed on them, and they sell for $2.00 a piece. Come by our administrative offices, or our thrift stores, in Fairfax to pick up your choice. These won t last long, so hurry in today! DRIVER DESPERATELY NEEDED We are in desperate need for a driver who has a vehicle large enough to pull our trailer, loaded with tables and cages, to the cat adoption events on weekends. We only attend events on weekends and a list of dates and locations are listed on our website. If you have any free time available, we could really use some help. You are not obligated to stay for the event and can drop the trailer off early and pick it up later in the day. We would appreciate any day or time you can give us. We also need a Saturday driver at Second Chance 2 to help with pick-ups and deliveries. Please contact Vicki Kirby at the main office or by at vkirby@hsfc.org for more information. NEWLY ELECTED BOARD MEMBERS At the annual membership meeting held on May 25, 2005, the membership elected the following to the Board of Directors: Vicki Kirby, Mary Kendall, Marlene Hammer and Lynne Mayo. Lynne has been a pet owner for numerous years and currently has 2 cats 1 adopted from the HSFC AUDIT COMPLETED Yippppeeee.. the 2004 audit of the Society s financial statements is complete and with no material findings. With much hard work of digging through files, pulling and copying invoices and checks, counting items in the thrift stores, meeting with auditors, reviewing journal entries and statements, etc., we can now put the 2004 audit behind us. Approximately three years ago, the Board of Directors decided to pursue an annual audit versus every two years due to the size of the Society both financially as well as in the amount of property we owned. To date, current and prior year audits have gone smoothly with no material findings. COMPELLING QUOTE The dog inhabits a no-man s land between human and animal. Unlike the cat, the pig, the sheep or the horse, he cannot, if given the opportunity, take up where he left off with Nature. Whether he came from wolves or gods, it appears the faithful dog has always been with us functioning as companion, guardian and helper. Few people recognize the dog for what he is - a precious gift to our species who asks nothing more than to be allowed to accompany us always, to help us, protect us, to share our joys and sorrows. He is our species soul-mate. (Quote from Diane Jessup, The Dog Who Spoke with Gods) PAGE 10
