A U S T R A L I A N M O D E N A N E W S - P A G E 3 Modena Club of Queensland President s Report Another year slipping away with two shows down and one to go. Congratulations to all of the winners you will find detailed reports on our shows plus the Southern Shows elsewhere in this edition. It was great to have another international judge, Mr Jerry Mitosinka from the US run his very educated eye over our birds. Jerry has bred, shown and judged Modena s for many years and is a very well respected member of the Modena fraternity. It was also nice to hear he was very impressed with the overall quality of our birds. Thanks to Damon for driving Jerry and his wife France out to Warwick which is a 5 hour trip on the Monday after our show to check out the countryside and look at more Modena s. My travelling partner for the past 20 years Brett Shelley judged our first show at Caboolture and did a great job. Brett has not shown in the past couple of years but still has a great eye for a good bird and eventhough he has not been showing he still attends all of our shows and has held many positions on our committee in the past. I hope in the near future he gets back into the breeding and showing as he is a great asset for our club. I must add I was a little disappointed with the auction at our show we raised $310, the same few people as always donated birds I don t know why everyone could not donate 1 bird as all the profits go to our club. Thanks to John Doman and Ian Head who donated pigeon related items for the auction as well. That s about all for now, hope to see everyone at our Annual Show. President Lexie Brackin. Treasurer & Ring Secretary Report Closing balance at the 11th of April, is $ Total Debits = $ Total Credits = $ Still plenty of rings available:.50 cents each (min. order 10 rings) plus $5.00 postage. 4 A U S T R A L I A N M O D E N A N E W S - P A G E 4 Modena Club of Queensland Secretary s Report Showtime 2014 got off to a great start with the All Breeds State Show, held at Caboolture. Congratulations to Paul Manz - Champion Modena and also John Hammermeister - Reserve Champion Modena. The following weekend, the Northern Modena Classic was held at Ipswich with approximately 200 entries and we had the pleasure of International Judge, Jerry Mitosinka, USA passing judgement on our birds. Champion bird was once again benched by Paul Manz with Reserve Champion going to novice exhibitor Robert Doley. Champion Argent - Pownell Lofts. The Club held an auction on the Sunday to raise much needed funds, many thanks to those members who donated birds and related items for the Auction and also those who bid generously. A special thanks to member, Darryl Bitossi who donated a bag of pigeon mix for the raffle. *Just a Reminder* The Australian National Pigeon Association Show will be held at Ipswich Showgrounds 18th - 20th July Modena Judge, Jan Heldal (Norway). Then the final Club Show for 2014 (MCQ Annual Show) will be held at Caboolture Showgrounds, Saturday 2nd August Judge Col Zemek. 5 A U S T R A L I A N M O D E N A N E W S - P A G E 5 The Carcass Show The following short article is an extract from Joseph Quinn s Book The Pigeon Breeders Notebook, Feather, Form and Flight When I was in my teens, I attended a club meeting held at Carl Graefe's office at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. It was a special occasion because the club was preparing for their annual dinner. Each person had bought several pigeon "culls" to be part of the main course of the meal the following day. Art Maria had the best Modenas money could buy and many of the members would have died to have one of the eight birds he brought. As I recall, there were twelve Modenas in all. Eight from Maria and four from other members. It was suggested we have a Modena Show. The coops were put out and each member had a chance to judge the twelve doomed birds. The first eight places were difficult. Nine through twelve presented only one problem; "How do you place four birds that appeared to have all the faults of the breed." After the birds were killed and plucked, we had a carcass show. We judged the same dozen which had their heads carefully cleared of all feathers. The results were astonishing! Nobody could separate out the bottom four. Two of them were in the majority vote for the top three. I learned something that has remained with me all my life. Most of what is described, as shape in pigeons is feather. There was no quality of skull in the carcass which would indicate the bird was an excellent or poor representative of the Modena breed. I believe the statement holds true for most ''head" emphasized breeds. We call it "skull", "back skull" or "power", but we must remember what we are talking about is feather. A tender tale: I am rem inded of a rather famous C.L.L.F. Tumbler breeder named Russell Schoen from St. Louse, Missouri. His success in the shows was most often with self black hens with tremendous heads. The Dam of this line of birds, #51, was a spectacular bird. When asked about this bird, he said, "I lost her last year. She was weakened by the cold and couldn 't lift her massive head out of the fountain. She drowned in a half-inch of water!" Well that massive head was really the result of beautiful large, cupped crown feathers. 14 A U S T R A L I A N M O D E N A N E W S - P A G E 14 Modena Club of Queensland A big thank you to all the members involved with my win. Special thanks to Chris & Sharon for making room to take my birds to the show, also to Lexie Brackin for a bird he gave me which bred the winning bird. I would have loved to have been there, but due to my Mum being sick I was unable to make it. To date I have won 3 Reserve Champions & 1 Champion in the Novice Class. Hope to see you all at the next show. Cheers Robert (Tom) Doley - Sincere thanks - Important information for all Queensland Bird Keepers The Biosecurity Act (Qld) now requires all animal owners or plant growers in Queensland to be registered as a "biosecurity entity" either with the Queensland government or your local council. This will be brought in over the next few years to cover all owners and growers of all plants and animals in Queensland. This bill now gives its administering authorities right of entry onto your property, and you must maintain a 'biosecurity' standard for how your animals and birds are kept as decided by the QLD government. Compulsory registration: There are penalties for owners and growers who do NOT register their property, under this Act. All Queenslanders who own "100 captive birds" must be registered, whether commercial poultry or privately owned aviary birds. Under this Act bird sales, and clubs, will need to be registered separately for the duration of the event. All bird and animal owners need to read the Biosecurity Act Qld and understand what it means for their birds and animals This legislation will affect us. The actual regulations that will sit under the legislation are still under development in government. We are currently trying to find out how we will be affected and what we will need to do with regard to our bird sales, etc. Questions have been raised about why bird clubs clearly were not consulted in relation to this bill, in particular the QCBS. There were very few submissions from animal groups and only fifteen in all, which would suggest very little consultation considering the scope of this bill. The submission from the Australian Veterinary Association, Queensland Division, to have captive birds removed from the designated list and the need for meat in the diet of many birds, seems to have been totally ignored. In the Act captive bird is defined as 'a bird in captivity, whether wild by nature or bred in captivity and whether native to Queensland, migratory or introduced'. And animal is defined as 'any member of the animal kingdom (other than a human), whether alive or dead'. QFS is working with QCBS to seek clarification from government and to note this as yet another item of red tape applied to bird keeping. To see a copy of the Act go to and in the search box on the top right hand side of the screen put in "Biosecurity Bill Reprinted from 'Finch News' Journal of the QLD Finch Society

And the usual nest bowl bugs are about - try these products to combat those nasties. Yates - Vegetable Dust (Derris) Ideal for dusting next bowls and harmless to young. Used by show poultry breeders, effective and cheap. Features Based on a natural plant root extract. Almost non-toxic to humans, bees and wildlife (except fish). Handy easy to use shaker pack. Easy to use shaker pack no mixing or spraying required. Available from Bunnings, approx $6.00 for 500g. Can recommend, have used the past two seasons with no side effects - Warren. Hortico - Ant & Roach Dust As used by one of Australia s top breeders of Zebra Finches. Has proven to be a good product for this problem also - seems to have no effect on finches so should be safe for pigeons. Available from Coles/Woolworths, approx $10.50 for 500g. Tips from an Old Timer Nearly every Pigeon Fanicer I have spoken to, medicate their birds in one form or another. My medicine cabinet consists of bleach, Epsom salts, Iodine, pure Apple Cider Vinegar, garlic & cod liver oil. Keep your loft clean, dry and plenty of sunshine and air. For your pigeon s health - quarantine when introducing new birds.

A U S T R A L I A N M O D E N A N E W S - P A G E 18 L A V E N D E R A N D MILKY F A C T O R E D M O D E N A S by Del Clausen, courtesy Pigeon Debut February 1998 One of the more attractive and beautiful colours we have in the Modena world is the Lavender. To start with, let s give you the recognised description of the mutation Lavender. Geneticists of the pigeon world describe Lavender asa silvery gray colour. Joe Quinn also adds that Modenas are a rather unusual milky (MY) expression. One could conclude that because of the Modena Bronze that all Modenas carry, our Modena Lavenders express a different shade of Lavender than other breeds. Lavender or milky is a recessive colour modifying mutations. A recessive gene in order to be expressed must be homozygous. What this means is that in order for a pair of Modenas to produce a Lavender that youngster must receive the milky factor gene from both parents. As you can see both parents must carry the milky gene to produce Lavender. A cock and a hen carrying milky will produce about 75 per cent normal youngsters and 25 per cent Lavender youngsters. A mating of one Lavender parent to a normal coloured parent carrying Lavender will produce about 75 per cent Lavender and 25 per cent normal coloured Modenas. The normal coloured youngsters of this mating will carry Lavender. Lavenders can be produced three different ways. Self ash red, milky factor and ash red, and milky factor and black. Lavender, as we recognise it in our standard, is milky factor and smooth spread blue (black) combined. It can be either intense or dilute. Describing a little more in depth, milky combined with our three basic colour groups, ash red, blue and brown. Ash red family: Milky combined with the ash red family will produce lavenders. One reason this is possible is that in the ash red family, ash red totally masks our Modena bronze factor. The bronze factor is present but it cannot be expressed. When bronze is expressed such as our bronze tri and blues, milky creates a washed out look from the bronze expressed in these colours. This would not create the even coloured Lavender Modena as we desire. Ash red Lavender can also be expressed as self ash red. When introducing spread into ash red one can expect, bronze red and mahogany's to the Lavender colouration's. The higher patterns, red cheque or T patterns seem to produce the, brownish reds and mahogany's and the mealy bar patterns seem to come out the lighter colour or Lavender coloured self ash red. Blue family: Self coloured blues (black) combined with milky is our recognised Lavender In our standard. Both varieties of intense or dilute milky are recognised in the Lavender class. In this class one can note the variation of light coloured Lavenders to darker coloured Lavenders. I think one can contribute this to three basic reasons. Sooty factor, dirty factor, and a poor grade of black. Black does not always completely mask what is underneath it. Very often on a poor grade black it is possible to see bars or cheques showing through the spread black. This would contribute to light or dark Lavenders. Sooty and dirty factors are similar modifying genes, a black with sooty factor is a richer black, dirty darkens noticeably the pigmentation's of the blue pigeons. So you can see these conditions could all contribute to the expression of light or dark coloured Lavenders. For the most our Lavenders are attractive in both light or dark colours. Breeders may prefer one over the other. Bronze tri and blue Modenas combined with milky also are attractive. Although milky washes out the bronzing in these colours in the wing shield most breeders find this colour very pretty. Brown family: The brown family cannot produce the true Lavender colour that our standard calls for. I find the milky and brown produce attractive colour, the dilute browns and milky are very attractive. The milky mutations combined with other mutations such as opal, indigo and toy stencil could create many beautiful combinations. These could all be challenging and self rewarding IMC Young Bird & Yearling Show Valley Center, Kansas, 2007 USA Lavender Schietti Bill Dunn Independence, Iowa Photo courtesy of Patrick Laval.

A U S T R A L I A N M O D E N A N E W S - P A G E 19 The following is a report on our recent show held in Albury NSW for the Twin Cities Fancy Pigeon Club also incorporating the NSW Modena Society Show, which was an IMC regional show. Overall there were over a thousand birds on display with a 170 Modenas. The major winner was Jamie Ramsey with a Bronze Gazzi OC, Reserve was a Yellow Schietti of Paul Evison. Best young went to a Bronze Schietti from the loft of Ian Snyder. The quality of birds was exceptional and there was great fellowship amongst the members. It was a pleasure to see Jamie receive the IMC medal which David Lewis has put forward in his time as President. The NSW Modena Society AGM was also held at this show, with the following taking office. Jamie Ramsey staying on as Secretary/Treasurer and myself taking over from Paul Evison as President, and so I would like to take this opportunity to thank Paul for his time as President. In finishing I would like to wish all those that are heading for the National all the best and enjoy. Cheers David Battin. Judges report - Mr Russell Atthowe (WA) Hi Guys had a great time at the Twin Cities Show. The hospitality was second to none, Cherryl & David have been marvelous hosts picking myself and fellow judge Greg Jamison from the Melbourne Airport and driving to their home in Wangaratta three hours away, stayed Friday, then off to the show Saturday morning. There were 170 Modena entries Schietti & Gazzi with the Schietti numbers dominating. The birds were well presented in all classes, with the Bronze Schietti class numbers the largest. The stewards did a great job, the classes flowed all day and had a very good judging arena. So thank you for inviting me to judge at this show and I hope to come back in the future, had a wonderful time, many thanks to everyone. Russell Atthowe {Mr Gazzi} Did you know??? Male pigeons have the rare ability to lactate, producing milk for their babies just like the females do! Newborn pigeons weaned on the pigeon milk of both parents, double their weight in the first two days!

A U S T R A L I A N M O D E N A N E W S - P A G E 23 By Dr Rob Marshall Carlingford Animal Hospital 772 Pennants Hills Road Carlingford NSW Dr Rob Marshall can be contacted on (02) robmarshall@birdhealth.com.au or visit The images and text below have been taken from Rob s website with his permission and I have had great success last breeding season using these products and Rob s breeding program (visit birdhealth.com.au for more information) or request one of Robs Pigeon Health Calendar s as they are a wealth of information and clearly outline the different program s. I met a good pigeon flyer from my area last year and during our discussion on health, I found out he uses the exact same program for his race birds and consistently places and wins. I am informing every one of these products due to the results I have noticed in my own birds and the increased fertility since using the products. Hope it can help anyone that had an ordinary breeding season last year, particularly those with clear eggs. The key to the breeding program is to start NOW, well before the birds are paired up. I usually do not pair up birds until August due to the very cold climate in Orange. I started the health program at the start of June and will continue until the breeding season is over. I am certainly no expert when it comes to pigeon health but just sharing what has worked for me. I also use the exact same program on my feeders as I do with the Modena s. Thanks and good luck for the upcoming breeding season Jamie Ramsey. When energy needs are at their greatest (during breeding, the moult and for juvenile birds) E-Powder is the ideal product to ensure energy needs are completely met. During these critical times, it is recommended that E- Powder be given every day so that birds are not left susceptible to failing health as a result of depleted energy reserves. Not only does E-Powder protect the health of birds during these critical times, it is also ideal for breeding birds because the enzymatic action of Thiamin and other B vitamins in E-Powder promote rapid growth in chicks and protects parents from the fatigue of feeding. This ensures chicks grow to the full capacity by pushing their energy pathways to their genetic limits. E-Powder may be added to the dry or soaked seed and is usually given in combination with Turbobooster and Fvite as part of an ongoing health programme. It is highly palatable and may be given daily as a potent energy source. The club managed to raise much needed funds and we appreciate the donation from Rob.

General Pigeon Health By Dr Rob Marshall continued from page.. 23 Turbobooster A U S T R A L I A N M O D E N A N E W S - P A G E 24 TurboBooster is a concentrated form of energy, coupled with vitamin B complex and the oil based breeding vitamins A, D, E and K. This multi-purpose energy rich oil is best added to the grain. It is soon relished by the birds. Energy Powder is added to the mix for greater energy efficiency and many fanciers add the DufoPlus, Ioford NF and F-vite at the same time, giving remarkable results. It's a simple but highly effective feeding system! KD Powder Dr Marshall's KD Powder, Acid Water Cleanser, is a multipurpose water cleanser used to promote natural health. It contains a complex blend of organic acids, hydrogen ions and surfactants that acidify the contents of the crop and help keep the drinking water perfectly clean. It is given in the drinking water for 1 or 2 days each week as part of an ongoing health programme or may be given at the first sign of illness to prevent the progression of illness whilst the exact cause is identified. Acid Water Cleanser should be immediately added to the drinking water when illness is suspected. At the same time, it should also be used to disinfect the cage or aviary and the water and food containers. The cleansing action of Acid Water Cleanser kills germs in the crop and "self-cleans" the drinking vessels thereby enhancing a bird's ability to repel disease in a purely natural way. When mixed at disinfectant strength, Acid Water Cleanser is a potent but safe cleanser. It should be wiped or sprayed over the cleaned surfaces and feeding utensils to help repel air born infections, especially moulds and bacterial infections. Acid Water Cleanser may also be mixed with the bath water in warmer months as a natural insect repellant and feather cleanser, repelling red mite, quill mite, scaly face mite, flies and lice. Clean water is the most basic yet critical component of maintaining good health in birds. Dr Rob Marshall's Acid Water Cleanser is ideal for ensuring your bird's water remains sparkling clean and when used as part of an ongoing health programme is the ultimate product to maintain optimal health without the use of medication. A water cleanser to be used during wet weather to keep the droppings nutty. Megamix is a mixture of organic acids used to protect the health of the flock during wet weather or when the humidity rises above 65%. The increased acidity does not damage the bowel in any way, but does prevent the acid fearing germs, notably E.coli and thrush from multiplying. It is used in lofts when a humidity problem turns the healthy nut-brown droppings to green. The principal function of Megamix is to protect the healthy flock from the damaging effects of a high loft humidity, but it must be used at the first signs of a dropping change. When used at the very first signs of the green discolouration Megamix gives immediate results, returning the green droppings to nutty brown droppings within 8 hours. The very best fanciers of every Federation in Australia are all using Megamix. It is used for one day or can be given continuously during wet spells to protect the health and form of race birds, breeding and young birds, eliminating the need for stronger medicines. Megamix & high humidity. To the uninitiated it always seems strange that high humidity (i.e. a moisture content of above 65% in the air) causes illness in birds, but it is an undisputed fact that the health of the racing pigeon does not enjoy a high humidity. It is obvious to all fanciers that pigeons look duller on rainy days than when the sun is out and that the droppings "go off" when it rains and tighten up when it is dry. This occurs because a high moisture in the air is accompanied by an increased bowel germ count (E.coli and thrush) which causes "gut ache" and green, loose droppings. During racing the "upset" bowel will take the birds off form and when the wet spell continues for more than a day their health is endangered. The Megamix lowers the germ count and immediately protects the fitness and health of the race birds.

A U S T R A L I A N M O D E N A N E W S - P A G E 27 Modena Tidbits by Dave Cooke, U.S.A. From Egg to Show (Weaving your way to the Show) It s the middle of March and you finally got your first set of eggs. I will take you through the breeding season, summer heat and fall weather on our way to the show season and what I will go through and look for in my young birds. Doratha with Purebred Pigeon magazine asked me to walk through and talk about what I look for in my young and how I can tell what s in and what s out on my culling. As you can see one hatched out of the two eggs. We all experience the early headaches of the breeding season. We did get one to hatch so here we go on our journey. The second picture is the little guy just hatched. The third and fourth pictures are at seven days old and I go ahead and put the band on. At this time I will give the youngster a 1/4 canker tablet. This seems to help them keep the canker in check. The last picture on the bottom she is 14 days old and just starting to get some features that I start to look for. The next picture will be a head shot at 18 days old. As you can tell this gal is going to have a nice wide frontal that we as Modena breeders like to have in our stud of birds. Also you will notice the short wide beak we need to have. At this time you can start to see the little pin feathers that will be on his feet if you are lucky enough to get this. With my stud of Modenas I have this bred into my family to strengthen the looks of the legs. I like to have my young birds develop this I call gate post legs. The next picture she is 25 days old you can see how thick the legs are. The other feature I am looking for is the width between the legs. Notice in this picture how wide the leg setting is. I know at this time this bird is going to be setting on a good base and everything else will then start to fill in. The next photo shows the little gal at 39 days old. Now you can see how well she is starting to station and the roundness that she is developing. It is at this time that I check to make sure he is starting to balance out. This bird here is already showing good power and roundness. The other feature to look for is in the tail. We see so many Modenas with the long tails. 28 A U S T R A L I A N M O D E N A N E W S - P A G E 28 Modena Tidbits by Dave Cooke, U.S.A. From Egg to Show (Weaving your way to the Show) Continued from page 27 We Modena breeders like the short tail to compliment the overall bird. When culling long tails is one of the features I am breeding away from along with the narrow frontals. As you can see in the photo at 2 months old the bird is really starting to look like a Modena that may make it in the show pen. Notice the deepness of keel, the round body and the thick neck and legs. At this time I am starting to give the youngsters there special vitamins and feed with high protein so they will go into the summer healthy and molt out the best I can get them. I use some oils on the feed to bring out the glossy look we are after. I also am treating for canker and I will worm them before they go into a molt. Make sure to not worm when molting as that really raises havoc with the new feathers coming out. With the bronze birds I have found that if they start feathering in a dark color and there feet are dark then with my stud of Modenas the color will be enhanced when they molt out. As you can see at 5 months old this girl has got a nice bronze color and you will notice the roundness, bully neck, short tail and nice legs. As you can see before I go to show her I have plucked the feathers on her feet and also up above the band as required by the Modena standard. So now we are days from the show so I start to get her toe nails trimmed, beak trimmed up and give her a bath one week before the show. Now its show time and you feel good as all the work has paid off. She has just won best young bronze hen and she even got on the cover of Foy s catalog 2006/ months old Cover on Foy s Catalog

A U S T R A L I A N M O D E N A N E W S - P A G E 29 Modena Club of South Australia SA Modena Club June The Modena Club of South Australia is on the internet at: sites.google.c om/site/ modenaclubs a/home We've already seen two Sunday shows this season along with the SA Canary and Pigeon Society Young Bird and Yearling show and just completed the SA Modena Club show on June 14 and 15. It's the end of the local show season for some while others will continue to the National show and to the local agricultural shows. The Modena Club annual show saw a few interstate visitors arrive with some seriously good birds. Jerry Mitosinka from the USA was our judge and was presented with 221 Modenas which were the best lineup of birds that I've seen in the flesh. A very successful show was had, so thank you Jerry. I'm sure that all those present appreciated Jerry's informative comments throughout the judging. Congratulations to Jamie Ramsey who had the champion with a very nice young Bronze T Schietti cock. Thanks to Jamie Ramsey, Paul Evison, Mark Neal and Jim Burns for making the journey and showing us your quality birds. Many thanks also to the local exhibitors for their continuing support of the show. A full show report can be found elsewhere in the newsletter. Report from the SA Canary and Pigeon Society Young Bird and Yearling show. David Sandhoff made himself available to judge the young bird and yearling show as by good fortune he had planned to be in Adelaide on the weekend of the show. He didn't get to see Collingwood win but hopefully enjoyed the trip anyway. Just over 70 Modenas were benched with 5 exhibitors bringing birds from across SA and Broken Hill. There were a number of good birds shown by the club President Simon Drewitt and by Joe McAvaney from Broken Hill. Simon showed a yearling Bronze Schietti cock bird that made the last three. David Lewis had two of the final three though, being a young brown bar schietti and a young blue gazzi hen. The blue gazzi went on to win best young and best Modena of the show SAC&PS Young Bird & Yearling Show Adelaide Showgrounds Sunday May 18. 30 A U S T R A L I A N M O D E N A N E W S - P A G E 30 Modena Club of South Australia Annual Show (IMC Regional Show) Adelaide, South Australia 14 th & 15 th June The Modena Club of South Australia annual show was held on the weekend of June 14 and There were 11 exhibitors and 221 entries for the show of which 59 were Gazzi and 162 were Schietti. This ratio seems to favour Schietti more each year as time poor exhibitors drift to the Schietti pattern birds. Jerry Mitosinka from the USA was our judge and Jerry suggested that we judge young hens as the first class for any given colour so that a hen that crowed could be judged in the subsequent judging of young cocks. Judging commenced at about 10:30 and Jerry started with the bronze Gazzis. Bronze T, Tri and Bar were judged as separate classes and then a best of colour, best of colour Old and best of colour Young chosen from the class winners. There were 15 Bronze T pattern, a single tri pattern bird and another 15 Bars and Dilutes. Best of Colour Bronze Gazzi was won by a Bronze T old cock exhibited by Jamie Ramsey. Best Bronze Gazzi family young was won by a Blue Young Cock exhibited by David Lewis. There were only 7 Ash Red family birds shown and the best was an Old Mealy hen exhibited by David Lewis. Best Young was an Ash Yellow Hen also exhibited by David Lewis. Indigo Gazzi was won by a young hen exhibited by Jamie Ramsey. There were no old Indigo Gazzi shown. Best Black Gazzi Old and Young were both exhibited by Simon Drewitt and 8 in total were shown. There were 7 Brown Gazzi in various patterns shown with the best being an old Brown Bar hen exhibited by David Lewis. Best young was a dilute hen also exhibited by David Lewis. The best Gazzi went to the Mealy Old Hen exhibited by David Lewis who also exhibited best Reserve Gazzi being the Brown Bar old hen. Jamie Ramsey s Bronze T old cock pushed the above two but missed out on the day. Best Young Gazzi also went to David Lewis with his Young Blue Cock. The Bronze family Schietti were judged in the same manner as the Gazzis as there were 50 shown in all. The Bronze Schiettis continue to be the most popular classes in the show were it s common to see 6 to 8 entries to a single class. What a joy it would be to see these numbers in more classes and to see more real completion as a result. Best Bronze Schietti family went to a Bronze T Young Cock exhibited by Jamie Ramsey. Best Old went to a Bronze Tri hen exhibited by Gavin Pearce. Reserve Champion of Show Mealy Gazzi Old Hen Breeder/Exhibitor David Lewis

A U S T R A L I A N M O D E N A N E W S - P A G E 31 Modena Club of South Australia Annual Show (IMC Regional Show) Adelaide, South Australia 14 th & 15 th June There were 13 Ash Red family birds shown of which 2 were dilute. Best Ash Red family Schietti went to an old Yellow check hen exhibited by David Lewis. Best young Ash Red family went to a Young Cock exhibited by Jamie Ramsey. Best indigo Schietti was won by an old hen exhibited by another interstate visitor in Mark Neal. Best Indigo Schietti young was exhibited by Jamie Ramsey. Best Grizzle Schietti was exhibited by Paul Evison with an old Red Grizzle cock. Best Young Grizzle Schietti was won by Joe McAvaney from Broken Hill. A couple of birds of good type were eliminated from the Grizzle classes due to white flights. Best Magnani Schietti went to an old cock exhibited by Darren Sheppard from Whyalla. There were no young shown and Magnani numbers were down on last years National in Adelaide. There were 10 Black Schietti shown which also is down on previous years. Best went to an old Black Cock exhibited by Gavin Pearce. A young hen exhibited by Jamie Ramsey was best of the young. Mark Neal had the best Opal Schietti with a young cock and the best old with his old cock. Simon Drewitt exhibited the best white with a young cock and best old with a hen. Simon was the only exhibitor of Whites this year which is disappointing given their popularity in the last few years. Best Brown family Schietti was exhibited by Joe McAvaney with an old tri hen. Best young was exhibited by David Lewis with a brown bar young hen. David Lewis has dominated Brown family awards in recent years so it s good to see a new name on the winners list. Paul Evison won best Schietti Recessive Red and best Recessive yellow. Best old was a Recessive Red cock and best young was a Recessive Yellow. Mark Neal s Red Argent young cock was the only Argent exhibit but was a bird that Jerry made positive mention of while selecting best young Schietti. Best old Schietti and Reserve Schietti was a Bronze Tri old hen exhibited by Gavin Pearce. Reserve Champion of show went to the very nice Mealy Gazzi old hen exhibited by David Lewis. Best Schietti young went to Jamie Ramsey s Bronze T cock which was also best Schietti and went on to win Champion Bird of show. An outstanding bird from a quality family of Bronze Ts that Jamie has developed. Champion Modena of Show Bronze T Schietti YC Breeder/ Exhibitor Jamie Ramsey Many thanks to Jerry Mitosinka for judging and for talking us through his decision making as we progressed through to Champion.
