Goods and Services Auction for the Bark Park Conneaut Lake Bark Park presents a Goods and Services Auction on Sunday, June 29 th, beginning at 1:30 pm., at the Bark Park, Foust Road, East Side, Conneaut Lake. Sometimes it isn t possible to make a financial donation to the local project but most everyone has a talent, a hobby, or a service to share with other people. You can be part of this exciting event by donating an item, or your time, or a special service to be auctioned and still support the Bark Park. Maybe you could offer any of the following ideas to the auction: Paint a room in a house for someone Teach a beginner to play the piano (4 lessons) Weed someone s garden for 2 hours Two hours of organization skills to clean up an area in a house, garage, basement, etc. Give private golf lessons Teach someone to quilt, scrapbook, or make holiday wreaths So, you get the idea. Share your talent or hobby with someone. Even if you don t donate something for the auction, be sure to come to the auction on Sunday, June 29 th, and maybe you will discover a great bargain or a service you need. Many of us might have little jobs around the house that need our attention and we just don t have the time to get something done. Check out our listing of services to be auctioned and maybe someone will weed your garden, clean out gutters, or provide a spaghetti dinner for your family. There is even a one week vacation at a condo in Florida, an evening champagne pontoon cruise around Conneaut Lake, or even a kayak adventure through the Geneva swamp or Lake Wilhelm, (kayak provided). The list of items to be auctioned is growing every day. You can check out the list beginning June 7 th by going to the Bark Park website or Facebook page. We will have our wonderful local auctioneer Sherm Allen running the show so come and enjoy this great fun event. There will be refreshments available to purchase and as usual, this is a dog friendly event but remember, all dogs must be on a 6 foot or shorter leash and please, no flexie leashes.

Tales from the Dog House/ Lyme Disease Article Courtesy of Dog House Manager, Melanie As a vet tech I ve seen a lot of Lyme Disease over the years. People, horses and dogs. It s a nasty disease and shouldn t be taken lightly. It also manifests itself in a variety of ways. Not everyone gets the same symptoms. I have seen it cause neurological headaches, sensitivity to light, lameness, fevers, arthritis and renal failure. It s devastating but you can do something about it. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can affect humans, horses, dogs, cats and other mammals. Its primary carrier is the deer tick (Ixodes scapularis), which often feeds on rodents in its early stages. Later, the tick can attach to a dog or human and transmit the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. The sooner you take the tick off, the less chance you have of getting Lyme disease. The tick needs to engorge itself on blood and pass along the bacteria in to its host long enough for it to cause damage. Xia was 3 years old the first time she had Lyme, I had never vaccinated her, back then the vaccine was a lot less effective. I check my dogs over after their walk everyday and look for ticks, removing as soon as I find them. I lived in Massachusetts at the time where Lyme is very common. Xia was a little off one morning, thought nothing of it. It went away. A couple of days later she was lame, but, a different leg. That night she didn t want to eat, which was not unusual for her. The following morning, she still wasn t right. As I watched her I began to realize that she couldn t lower her neck to eat. I picked up her bowl and sure enough she started to eat. Then I start thinking, ok so when did she last drink any water. The poor dog was so thirsty, I felt terrible. So I took her temperature and it was high, very high. I was working for a vet at the time, so I called in and said I m bringing Xia with me. We ran blood and she tested positive for Lyme, we also sent out further blood work. We started antibiotics immediately and ran IV fluids and electrolytes. She came home with me that night. 3 days later the rest of the blood work came back. It was the highest count my vet had at that time seen. Under 36 is the blood count we are aiming for, hers was over 800. Had I not acted so quickly, who knows what the outcome would have been. Xia stayed on antibiotics for several weeks until further blood work showed that the count had come back down. But it has left her with arthritis in her neck. Xia is now 10 and healthy as an ox, apart from the sore neck that she experiences, we treat with massages and chiropractic care and supplements. Her second time with Lyme wasn t quite do dramatic but she was treated. She has never tested positive since. For more specific information on symptoms, prevention, and treatment, be sure to check with your veterinarian.

Meet Part Time Employee, Alayne Barbary How long have you lived in Meadville or Conneaut Lake Area? I have lived in Meadville almost my whole life, even though at the ripe old age of 28, that really doesn t seem that long. Not like I traveled far to get to Meadville, though, since I was in Saegertown the first few years of my life that I don t remember. Other places you have lived: If you want to count when I was in college, then I have lived in Clarion, PA as well. Favorite thing about living here: I really enjoy being able to go out and being able to get to nature quickly. While I enjoy the big city, there is nothing like going into the woods and hearing and seeing all the animals and life that happens. It is breathtaking every time. Present job(s): Besides working at the Dog House, I am a home health aide at Family to Family and I also sell tickets at the Academy Theater in Meadville before the shows. How did you get involved in the Bark Park? Through my mom, who has had two Therapy dogs, and an that she got from Sue. Favorite feature of the Bark Park? I love the off leash areas. Being able to take a dog off their leash without having to worry about them running off is great. I always feel bad having to restrain dogs to a few feet of my person the whole time they re outside. I feel like it isn t fair to them! Two words that best describe you: Oddly enough, both cheerful and reserved describe me pretty well. Name of your very first dog: The first dog I remember in my life was Daisy. Type of pets you presently own and names: I have a regular tabby cat named Milo and a German Shepherd named Chief Rinti (Chief for short) 3 favorite breeds or mixed breeds of dogs: While it is honestly hard for me to pick a favorite, I had never thought that I would like German Shepherds as much as I do. I would have to say they are definitely now in the top breeds. I also enjoy labs very much, but I have had labs all through my life (4 and counting). I also have a soft spot for pit bulls. Their faces make me melt every time. I love dogs because: I don t even know where to begin on this one. Loyal, loving, compassionate, protective, and family are just a few of the words that describe them and make me love them so much! The Red Barn Gallery: From what I have seen, it is very interesting and intriguing. I can t wait to really be able to take a good look at what it has to offer throughout the summer, especially because I love artwork of any kind.

Something For Everyone Dog House Groomer, Cameo Conneaut Lake Bark Park welcomes Cameo to our Dog House staff. Cameo is a residence of Crawford County. She completed her grooming instruction in November 2012 at Just Four Paws Academy of Pet Styling which teaches the Golden Paws instructional pet styling program. Before becoming a student at Mercyhurst Northeast to pursue a degree in Nursing, Cameo worked as a pet stylist in Edinboro. Her passion to care for animals is evidenced by her love for dogs including her adored Tubby, a black Labrador retriever. Cameo will be grooming at the Dog House on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Call Melanie at the Dog House, to schedule an appointment.

Birthday Parties at the Bark Woof, woof, woof, woof to me! Why not celebrate my birthday with a birthday celebration at the Bark Park. I will invite my best canine buddies and owners, and everyone can come to the Bark Park for an hour of doggie fun. My birthday party celebration will include doggie birthday cake, party hats, a few crazy games and possible time to swim in the pond or just wade in one of the wading pools or relax under the sprinkler. Our owners can enjoy hotdogs and a soft drink. The party size will generally be limited to 10 of my doggie buddies for the celebration. The party will be held in one of the off-leash areas on the Bark Park property. To schedule your birthday party, give my friend Melanie a call at Erie Sea Wolves Night with the Dogs Throw the ball, catch the Ball, get the ball. Familiar words when we are training and playing with our canine buddies, but the real ballgame will be held on Tuesday, June 10th, at the Bark in the Park Erie Sea Wolves game. The Conneaut Lake Bark Park has been attending this special event for the past few years. Join us for some good old fashion fun while we cheer for a Sea Wolves victory. We have some tickets left and the cost of the tickets is $4.50 each. The first 500 kids 12 and under eat free that night. The seats are pretty good, located on the 3 rd base side. And of course, dogs get in free. If you are interested, call the Dog House to check on availability of tickets. Fromm, now Available at the Bark Park Dog House Conneaut Lake Bark Park is proud to announce the addition of Fromm Food Products for your dog (and cat). Fromm has three basic varieties of both dry and canned food available, Gold, Four Star and Classic. We suggest you take some time to check out the products available and even read the reviews of the products. Fromm offers quite a large variety of products based on nutritional needs of your pet and budget considerations. At this time we carry a limited supply of the Adult Gold Dry in our retail store. Because of our limited retail space, for now we will place an order for food the 2 nd Tuesday of each month (June 10)with delivery on Thursday afternoon. Most products come in a small (@5 lbs), medium, or a large bag depending on the product you wish to purchase. Some varieties are also available in cans. Be sure to include this information when you place an order. All orders must be prepaid. When necessary, the Dog House food now used for boarders, etc. will be Fromm and not Aivilas. For additional information, prices or to place an order, contact Melanie at the Dog House,

Bark Park Lure Coursing Fun Day On Sunday, June 22 nd, lure coursing will have its debut at the Conneaut Lake Bark Park. Lure coursing began as a humane alternative to live game coursing in which dogs hunted live animals like rabbits by sight and not by scent. In present day lure coursing, dogs chase an artificial lure pulled by a mechanical pulley around a course designed to mimic the zig zag movement of a fleeing rabbit. Lures are generally plastic bags that are being pulled around by a line. Dogs of many different breeds love lure cursing because, for most dogs, it is just plain fun to chase things. To find out if your dog is interested in the sport, give it a try. We will have a fun lure coursing event on Sunday, June 22 for lure coursing beginning at approximately 9:00 am. There will also be a dock diving event the same day. There will be a small fee charged to have your dog run the lure course. To find out more about lure coursing check out the Akron/Canton Terrier Club on Facebook. This club will set-up and sponsor the event on June 22 nd. Come and join the fun. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Obviously, this is a dog friendly event, but please have your dog on nothing longer than a 6 foot leash when attending this event.
