2 GOLDEN NOTES Editor s Bark Never Easy to Say Goodbye Page 2 Argus Rise of the Phoenix, CD, MX, MXJ, MXP, OF Dogs are not our whole lives but they make our lives whole Roger Caras Saying goodbye, whether it is to a faithful golden companion, a loved one, or a dear friend is never easy. Unfortunately, it is a part of the circle of life and something we have had to deal with quite a bit over the last few months as a club. Our upcoming specialty is dedicated to the memory of June Smith, a long time club member who left us in early January. She was always willing to step up as needed, was always present at the various breed shows, and our dedicated wicket person at our CCA events. There is an invite to celebrate the life and times of June, a truly remarkable woman who had quite an impact on all who came in contact with this whirl-wind. Over her 50 years in Golden Retrievers, June s goal was to produce beautiful, sound, intelligent, healthy and biddable Goldens. June achieved her goal hundreds of times over. There are Goldens in the past, present, and long into future that will embody her passion. It will be a day of Celebration as an Open House with the bonus of an Estate Sale. You can only imagine the wonderful K9 paraphernalia June has collected and used in all her years in Golden Retrievers. All proceeds from the sale of June s possessions benefit the Golden Retriever Foundation Medical Fund. March 15, Ramona Way, Alamo, CA Open from 1:00 PM until 6:00 PM Refreshments and great stories provided. RSVP Valerie Anderson (H) valsopus@usamedia.tv Janice Hall (H) janice@jmghall.com Suzanne Fortner (C) suzannefortner@hotmail.com Parking will be way of a shuttle so please contact those above for more information.\ We also said good-bye to Tom Lewis in early March. Tom and his wife, Jocelyn bred and show dogs as Shalimar Golden Retrievers. While often in the background, Tom was a problem solver as much as he was an artist. His creations adorn the Lewis homestead and he often shared his trinkets. When I started exercising our dogs with my bicycle, Tom invented a bar that attached to the back wheel and kept the dogs stable and at a safe distance. And any time any of us needed him, he was right there ready to provide his wisdom and insight on a situation. In previous editions of Golden Notes, I have written about the mentorship of Jocelyn, as she is the one responsible for getting me involved in the world of Golden Retrievers. Even to this day I look to Jocelyn as a mentor. My first Golden show dog was also my first champion and it was only because of Jocelyn s encouragement that I even started showing Arsey. Membership Update But Tom...he was more like an older brother than anything else. I traveled with him and Jocelyn to many dog shows. There were a number of dinners shared at their house and countless hours were spent in his garage talking about everything. Words on a page do not do Tom justice. He was an incredible man who was loved by many and dearly missed. Our condolences to the family and friends of both June Smith and Tom Lewis. You are not forgotten and we thank you! Norcal GRC welcomed several new members during 2017: Harish Rajamani & Alamelu Sankaranarayanan from Sunnyvale; Christine Anderson, Olivehurst; Karen Slissman and Dave Anderson, Petaluma; Stephen & Catherine Seagrave, Holy City; Pat White, Sacramento; Jeff and Sio Wilson, Oakland; Nathan Moule, Clayton; Julie Scopazzi & Timothy Avery, Los Gatos; Kristen Biermayer, Concord; Shera Johnston, Brentwood; Judy & Jerry Drum, Chilcoot. We currently have members including 19 Life Members. Each of the new members was sponsored by a current member - some are breeders, some are fellow trainers & exhibitors. All bring unique talents to the club, represent our future, and reflect our shared love of the breed of golden retrievers. Laurie Rollins NORCAL GRC Membership Secretary
