3 GOT NEWS??? Forward it on to: JodyLynn Stuppy Note: NEW ADDRESS 137 W. 200 S. Valparaiso, IN (219) We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It s the best deal man has ever made. ~ M. Acklam By Raymond H. Oppenheimer TWENTY BASIC BREEDING PRINCIPLES There are a vast number of different breeding methods, some good, some bad. I should never presume to try to tell fanciers what is the right method because there is no such thing. Outstanding success can be achieved and has been achieved in a variety of different ways, so all I am going to do is to make some suggestions which I think helpful and to warn against certain pitfalls which trap too many of the unwary. 1. Don t make use of indiscriminate outcrosses. A judicious outcross can be of great value; an injudicious one can produce an aggregation of every imaginable fault in the breed. 2. Don t line breed just for the sake of line breeding. Line breeding with complementary types can bring great rewards; with unsuitable ones it will lead to immediate disaster. 1. Don t take advice from people who have always been unsuccessful breeders. If their opinions were worth having they would have proved it by their success. 2. Don t believe the popular cliché about the brother or sister of the great champion being just as good to breed from. For every one that is, hundreds are not. It depends on the animal concerned. 3. Don t credit your own dogs with virtues they don t possess. Self-deceit is a steppingstone to failure. 4. Don t breed from mediocrities; the absence of a fault does not in any way signify the presence of its corresponding virtue. 5. Don t try to line breed two dogs at the same time; you will end by line breeding to neither. 6. Don t assess the worth of a stud dog by his inferior progeny. All stud dogs are rubbish at times; what matters are how good their best efforts are. 7. Don t allow personal feelings to influence your choice of a stud dog. The right dog for your bitch is the right dog whoever owns it. 8. Don t allow admiration of a stud dog to blind you to his faults. If you do you will soon be the victim of autointoxication. 9. Don t mate together animals which share the same faults. You are asking for trouble if you do. 10. Don t forget that it is the whole dog that counts. If you forget one virtue while searching for another you will pay for it. (continued on page 10) Page 3 February, 2009 CDC
4 The Purina Weight Circle Program will start on July 1, 2008 and run until June 30, 2009 The Dalmatian Club of Houston won first place in the weight Circle program in 2007 and earned $ for their club. Are we going to let Houston beat us this year??? You don t need to feed Purina but collect the weight Circles from all your friends and relatives. If you are a member of the Purina Breeder program and would like your points to count BOTH for you and the club please Laura Kiedaisch <lkiedai@inwave.com> with your member number. You will submit weight Circles directly to Purina as always so they will be in YOUR account and then will also count for CDC. Collect Purina Weight Circles The Purina Weight Circle Program officially starts on July 1, Regional Clubs are encouraged to collect weight circles from Purina dog food products. The Circles can be collected by members of the club, friends, relatives and any one who wants to help. Each club will automatically receive 25% of the proceeds of their Weight Circle collection. The club with the highest weight circle poundage will receive 50% of the proceeds of their collection. The balance of the proceeds will go to DCAF to help support DCAF's activities. Send your weight circles to Laura Kiedaisch or bring them to a meeting: Laura Kiedaisch PO Box 8 Garden Prairie, IL Page 4 February, 2009 CDC
5 Message from the President Happy 2009 CDC Members, We have had quite a cold, bitter start to our New Year, and I hope you are all taking into consideration that our precious Dals coats, while beautiful and striking, are not the thickest, and our friends should not be let outside any longer than it takes to "take care of business". I know its common sense, but I just had to say it. Last month we had a wonderful Christmas and Awards Brunch. As always, the food was great, weather not so bad, and we had a few members attend that we haven't seen there for a while. I hope they continue to come. Watch the Spot News for this year's party, usually the first part of December, but the show calendar will dictate exactly which Sunday it will be. Because of the very frigid weather on January 8, the CDC Board of Directors decided that a teleconference Board of Directors meeting was order of the day. Please read the minutes that you'll find in this issue to see what the club is up to. But there is one issue that I'd like to present. The February meeting usually has a very small turn out as it is also the weekend of the "Indy" Specialty. If any of you, members and board members, are giving thought to attending this meeting, please let me know. Because the weather can also be a factor in the attendance of this meeting, it would be nice to know ahead of time if we have a quorum or not. Some of our members come from Indiana, or as far away as Bellvidere, and Elgin. If we could save a trip for them, I know they would greatly appreciate it. March is Chili Cook off month!!! So start planning now on either making chili to present for the cook off, or just bringing your taste buds in and voting for what you feel is the "best" CDC chili. It was great fun last year, and looks to be the same this year. I would also like to mention that if any of you have anything you'd like to be brought up before the Board, and can not make a meeting, please always feel free to contact me and I will see to it that the Board hears your concern or suggestion. The only way this club can maintain its quality of excellence is to have input from its members, whether you can attend meetings or not. To reach me either call or me at daldog2@comcast.net I'm always glad to hear from you. So, until our next meeting, or the next issue of this delightful newsletter, I hope you and your spotted friend c url up under a blanket with a good book, or a great TV show, and keep warm. Sincerely, Gail Meyer. Page 5 February, 2009 CDC

10 The Dog Dish (continued from page 3) 11. Don t search for the perfect dog as a mate for your bitch. The perfect dog (or bitch) doesn t exist, never has or never will! 12. Don t be frightened of breeding from animals that have obvious faults so long as they have compensating virtues. A lack of virtue is far the greatest 13. Don t mate together non-complementary types. An ability to recognize type at a glance is a breeder s greatest gift; ask the successful breeders to explain this subject there is no other way of learning. (I would define non-complementary types as ones which have the same faults and lack the same virtues.) 14. Don t forget the necessity to preserve head quality. It will vanish like a dream if you do. 15. Don t forget that substance plus quality should be one of your aims. Any fool can breed one without the other! 16. Don t forget that a great head plus soundness should be one of your aims. Many people can never breed either! 17. Don t ever try to decry a great Bull terrier. A thing of beauty is not only a joy forever but also a great pride and pleasure to all true lovers of the breed. Don t be satisfied with anything but the best. The second best is never good enough. Until next month Happy tails to you! HAPPY VALENTINE S DAY! JodyLynn CDC Minutes (continued from page 6) Old Business: Tom Kaiser reported that he received letters for the Service to the Canine Community and two letters for Member of the Year.
