The top breeds listed in 2009 also include the second-place German Shepherd, third-place Yorkshire Terrier and fourth-place Golden Retriever. The German Shepherd made it to second place on the list for the first time in 30 years. 19,354: The number of dogs entered into the World Dog Show 2010 in Denmark. They will take the treat you give them and bury in the backyard 8. They will jump on your bed with muddy feet. Making you do laundry again 7. They will lick visitors with an uncontrolled passion only they understand. 6. They will cause children to smile. 5. They will make you feel horrible for not walking them by looking at you with deep sad eyes. 4. They will look at you like you committed a crime against them if you don t let them lick your ice cream bowl. 3. They will cause wide spread happiness in large group settings. 2. They will crack you up by shaking their butts so hard you think they are going to snap in half. And the number one reason why you can t trust Newfoundlands 1. They will steal your heart like a thief in the night, showing you complete and pure love that only a Newfoundlands can show.

7 Meet Your Members Q. Names? A. Buzz and Patti Sondgroth Q. Occupations? A. Buzz is a retired heavy equipment operator. I worked as a teller in a bank, 14 years for a gymnastics gym and 2 years as a veterinary assistant in the breeding program for Canine Companions for independence. We both are retired and now watch our two grandsons ages 8 and 4 after school while our daughter Mary works. Q. Children? A. We have 4 children Mary, age 36 who is married to Dave and has two children Anthony and Dominic she lives in Chico, Theresa age 34 who is single and works for Nordstrom and nannies for a family with two kids she lives in Redwood City, EJ age 33 who is married to Sissi they live in Bothell WA, and John Paul. They all love sports are avid 49er fans and love the San Francisco Giants. Mary graduated from Saint Mary's College in Moraga and Theresa and EJ graduated from Cal Poly San Louis Obispo. They all like dogs but think we are way too involved with ours. Q. Where do you live? A. Buzz and I were originally from the bay area. We have since moved to Chico to be near our grand kids. Q. Tell us about your Newfs A. We currently only have one newf. Grand Champion Champion Salty Dog's Sea Breeze aka Breezy. She is a great dog and we hope to get her VN however, she comes into heat often right in the middle of training for the water or draft tests. She is a bit of a princess but she comes from a long line of great working Salty Dogs. She has had one litter of 7 puppies 4 girls and 3 boys. She was bred to Casta Newfs Viva Las Vegas. The puppies are 15 months old and have gone to families that are interested in working them. Our first newfoundland was also a Salty Dog his name was Natrone and he lived to be 10 years and 6days old. He was out of a litter from Beamer and Cleo. Betsy his litter mate is Breezy's great grandma. Natrone loved the water and carting we did not get titles on him because at the time we were still really busy raising 4 kids. He was a great companion for our son John Paul who was in a wheel chair. He spent many hours at his side just chillen. Q. Do you have other breeds or other types of animals? A. We have one cat Lover Boy aka LB who is white with a black heart on his side. He bites and is more of threat than any of our dogs have ever been. We also had a yellow labrador retriever male breeder from CCI Baja II he has over 200 puppies. 40 of those puppies are currently working service dogs as well as one who works for Homeland Security at Atlanta International airport as a bomb sniffer. Sadly we lost Baja this summer as well as Natrone. Q. How/why did you get your first Newf? A. We got our first newf, Natrone from Gabby, Martin, Laurie and Laura. I don't think it was Buzz and I so much as our son John Paul who clinched the deal. John Paul was in a wheelchair and when we went to "meet the dogs" (I have learned since this means be interviewed as a possible candidate to get a puppy) all of Gabby and Martins dogs loved John Paul and took turns being next to him or putting their paws in his lap. I was the one who originally wanted a newf and Buzz will tell you he likes them because you don't have to bend over to pet them. Q. What types of activities do you enjoy doing with your Newfs? A. We enjoy all aspects of owning a Newf, vacuuming, washing down walls for those spitball slobbers and picking up the random cardboard box that out of the blue they decide to tear up. We also enjoy showing, water work, draft work and I would love to get involved with therapy or the reading program where children with reading problems read to a dog. I think Breezy would love that. I am also interested in obedience I think Breezy would do well not so sure if I would. Q. Why did you join NCNC? A. We joined NCNC to meet other Newf owners, and learn about the different working dog activities. We have not been disappointed NCNC is a great group of people with lots of information to share. If you want to show your dog there are people who will help you with grooming. For water work and draft work and obedience Gabby, Martin, Laurie, and Laura have been amazing help. The NCNC and all the people we have met through the club have become an important part of our life. NOTE: Patti and Buz are applying for General Membership and are being published in this issue.
