1 April, 2010 Page Newfoundland Club of Northern California April, 2010 Letter From a New Member We are a retired couple living in the North Shore area of lake Tahoe with our two wonderful Newfs. We spend a lot of time doing outdoor type activities with them. Our girl, Storm, has absolutely lobed the Lake ever since we first introduced her to it at the age of 10 weeks. She has a very high activity/energy level, somewhat similar to Sporting dogs I ve had in the past, rather than the oft characterized couch potato Newf. We would love to get involved in some type of utility work with her, even if just on an informal basis. I have felt that a good place to start would be through some of the seminars that are offered through the Regional Clubs. Unfortunately, there is no Northern Nevada Club available since Reno is the closest city area to where we live and the Bay Area/ Sac. Area is a long way for us, especially in the winter. We would love to be involved in activities such as are listed on the membership application, but will have to be more of a nonparticipating member due to the distance involved. We are hoping, though, that during the good weather months we will be able to attend a few events and get to know some of the members. We are both very much looking forward to our membership in the No. CA Newf Club and to meeting other Newf owners who have a love of the breed the same as us! 2 Page 2 NewfsPaper WDC Corner By Alex Hoops NCNC s third and final carting seminar of the spring season took place in Gilroy on March 13. Many thanks to chair Pam Rubio for offering her home for the event when we learned that the original location was unavailable. We also held a Specialty Carting Test at the seminar. Unfortunately neither of our entrants passed, but I would like to thank them again for participating in this beginner-level draft event and wish them luck in their future carting endeavors. With draft season winding down, it s time to start thinking about dusting off those life jackets and bumpers for water work. NCNC will be holding our annual water seminar in Lincoln on June 5 & 6. Saturday will be geared towards beginning water work and Sunday will help prepare dogs for a water test at any of the three levels. Be on the look out for additional information and registration forms as the event approaches. NH&R By: Hazel Jacoby Photos by Merle Maggy Dogs in Rescue Here is a summary of rescue dog activity: Jesse: Still recuperating in foster care. He will be placed as soon as medically cleared. Jack: Dealing with an ear issue and should be available for adoption in early April. Stuart: Has been adopted Laci: Her story: Laci came into rescue on September 30, 2009, with her sister Lily. I called them the too tall twins. Laci was the small one at 32 inches at the withers. Prior to coming to NH&R, Laci had the fishing line cruciate repair, which had failed. She was evaluated by a veterinarian and cleared for surgery to repair her knee. A few weeks after the surgery her front left ankle became swollen. We x-rayed the area and did a bone biopsy. The biopsy was inconclusive for cancer but did show bacteria. She was treated for infection. Her cruciate repair healed nicely but the growth on her ankle remained the same. More x-rays were taken and the two sets were sent to Veterinary Cancer Group. Raffle Raffle Raffle Raffle Raffle Raffle Raffle Raffle Raffle Calling for DONATIONS!! NH&R will be holding its own raffle, a major fund raiser, at the NCNC picnic this year. The picnic will be on May 15, Please give us wonderful items for the raffle! Contact any NH&R Board member - you may give them your item(s) or let them know you will be donating and bring your items to the picnic. We look forward to seeing you at the picnic. We appreciate your assistance in making this a success. The verdict was that because there was bacteria present they could not conclusively say it was cancer. We treated for another month and then took new x-rays. Now Laci was limping on the front, the initial cruciate repair was sound, but her other cruciate tore. The NH&R Board decided to try 5 days of IV antibiotics to see if the front swelling would go down. Laci was brought to the veterinarian and it was noted that in the week since she was last seen the swelling had grown in size. More x-rays were taken and sent to be read. For the next two days Laci had IV treatments and it was evident there was no change. The surgeon called and said it is Osteosarcoma. The board was notified and it was decided that in the best interest of the dog, Laci should be euthanized. The veterinarian sent a bone biopsy out to the lab after the euthanasia, and the results were Fibroblastic Osteosarcoma. Laci was a wonderful dog. She was loved and cared for by Tracy Allen with assistance from Rob and Robin Merritt and myself. She will be greatly missed. The knowledge that she is now without pain is a blessing. 4 Page 4 NewfsPaper Treasured Friend I lost a treasured friend today The giant dog who used to lay Her gentle head upon my knee And share her silent thoughts with me... She'll come no longer to my call Retrieve no more her favorite ball A voice far greater than my own Has called her to His golden throne. Although me eyes are filled with tears, I thank Him for the happy years He let her spend down here with me And for her love and loyalty. When it is time for me to go And join her there, this much I know... I shall not fear the transient dark For she will greet me with her bark. Luke became a permanent part of our family when we adopted him in October of He passed away at Dr. Wendy Wallace s office March 6th I like to think that he lived more in the last few years with us than he had his whole life. He really became a big part of our family. It was a joy to teach him how to play and swim and to see him try and chase squirrels and take care of Coco-butt our chocolate lab. A day cannot pass that we do not mention some crazy antic of his or a special look or noise he would make. He was a twisty pretzel dog with a cartoon face for sure. 5 April, 2010 Page 5 Canine Good Citizen Testing at the National The NCA is pleased to offer a Canine Good Citizen Test on Wednesday, May 5. The CGC Program is a two-part program designed to (1) teach responsible dog ownership and (2) certify dogs that have the training and behaviors needed to be reliable, well-behaved members of the families and communities. It also can be a gateway to therapy dog work. What better way is there to showcase good manners and the sound temperament that is the hallmark of the Newfoundland! To help us approximate the number of dogs that will be participating, preregistration is strongly encouraged. Contact Bruce & Tracy Willoughby ( bew@umich.edu ) The deadline for registration is April 1. Saint Bernard of the Pacific Coast Presents An Educational Event and Cardio Clinic April 30 and May 1, Red Lion Inn, Sacramento, California - OPEN TO ALL BREEDS Dr. Richard Kienle - Speaker and Veterinarian Dr. Richard Kienle is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Medicine (Cardiology). He earned his DVM at Texas A&M and completed his residency in cardiology at UC Davis. Dr Kienle practices at Bay Area Veterinary Specialists in San Leandro and Mission Valley Veterinary Cardiology in Gilroy. Dr. Kienle's talk on April 30 (Friday) will cover the structure and function of the heart. He will then discuss those heart diseases most commonly seen in the St. Bernard dog. This talk is open to the public. This education event will last approximately 90 minutes. The seminar will commence 45 minutes after completions of judging at the SBCPC specialty. Dr. Kienle will be conducting ultrasounds and auscultations by appointment on Saturday May 1, 2010 at the hotel. Please contact Hazel Olbrich after April 14th at h_olbrich@sbcglobal.net or at to schedule an appointment or for further information. Walk-ins will be accepted on a time-available basis. An ultrasound examination does NOT require shaving. A water-soluble clear conducting gel, which can be easily washed off, and alcohol will be used in the chest region. Ultrasound appointments will take 20 minutes; Auscultations (listening by stethoscope) will require 10 minutes. The charge for ultrasound is $175 and for auscultation is $45. Book Review - Pet E.R. Guide By Walt Parsons I was very interested when I received an advertisement for a book from the Trailer Life Books people for a book that claimed to be A Directory of 24-Hour and After- Hour Veterinary Facilities in the United States. I promptly ordered Pet E.R. Guide by Melinda Lord. Having read the book I was very disappointed in the coverage, or rather the lack of coverage. Obviously I don t have a listing of every emergency Vet hospital even in California but right away I noticed a lot were missing. Here are a few examples: On our trip to the Saint Bernard National in Hood River our Saint had a heart attack in the small town of Anderson which is just south of Red Bluff. We managed to find an emergency vet hospital who s staff was very helpful in helping get our sick dog into the hospital on a stretcher and quickly having a vet look at Hilda. VCA Gateway A.H. is a 24 hour vet hospital which takes in emergency patients. They were very efficient and sympathetic to us at the loss of our Hilda. The book doesn t show any hospitals in the whole Highway I5 corridor between Davis and the Oregon border and definitely none in Anderson In Rohnert Park, CA an emergency Vet hospital is the Animal Care Center. I know nothing about them other than they are listed on the internet and they are not listed in the Pet E.R. Guide. In Cordelia, CA there is an emergency vet hospital called Solano, Napa, Pet Emer- gency Clinic. Again I know nothing about them other than their web page. One of our club members in that area told me about them. In Loomis there is the Loomis Basin Vet. Clinic in Loomis, CA which provides emergency service. It is obvious that Melinda Lord did a very superficial job of locating emergency clinics. She lists the big ones like UC Davis but doesn t bother with the smaller ones. When you are away from home and have a pet emergency you want the nearest one no matter how large or small the hospital is. Recommendation: Don t buy the book. Save your $19.95.

7 April, 2010 Page 7 Board of Director s Minutes - 2/27/10 Present: Laura Gallagher, Summer Poris, Gaby Cohen, Liz Pulchny, Joyce Taylor, Lynne Baker, Pam Rubio and Hazel Jacoby. Absent: Debbie Bridge. Minutes approved as published PR/JT No report from corresponding or recording secretaries or directors. Treasurer - WD is in good shape. Laura spoke with Debbie earlier today and she has $700 that needs to be put in for WD so they will meet there budget of the $1000 budgeted. Pam has only a few entries for the upcoming draft seminar. It was discussed that the minimum number needed is five participants. Regional - It is a little early for Actual vs budget. Summer said the judges are being put up for $50/night (2 nights) as we are able to piggyback Sac Valley putting up our judges at their hotel at their cost. The judges are paying their own transportation. Summer has sent away for information on another superintendent, Garmin, out of Oregon. Laura said So. Cal is very happy with Dog Show Secretary. Trophies were discussed. We have many trophies to be used for 2nd/3rd/4th place, only first place needs to be bought. It was mentioned that not every club gives 2nd- 3rd-4th place trophies, usually a nice rosette and then trophy for 1st place. W/M s paid State Board of Equalization sales tax, $257(2009). Account balance for club is $27, (2/26/2010). Laura suggested that the new board be fiscally conservative in the coming year. Summer brought up that bench show costs shouldn t come out of educations budget and there is no budget for the bench show. Previously, education signed the vouchers for the show but it s really not an education expense. At this point there are no purchases needed as we are using the same items from year to year. But in the next year or so some items will need to be bought to update the bench. It was suggested that bench show expenses could come out of admin fund. Members who exhibit only on the bench should be reimbursed. We need to make a policy on how these issues should be handled. It was discussed that the different boards have made many policies, but nothing is written. The only written policy the club has is our financial policy. It would be very advantageous to have a policy manual that could be passed on to each new board instead of starting all over each year. Joyce suggested putting policies on the web in the members section. Changes in policies could be made when they occur. It would be very easy to update and everyone would know where they are. Membership needs to be informed of club policies. Laura suggested getting a few members to search the paper for policies, write them down and then submit to board before putting on website. Further reviewing the budget it was felt that the club is doing well and the new board should be off to a good start. Old Business - Summer said that we had/have a policy that the club would support the entry if there was a breeder judge at Golden Gate and Sac Valley. She questioned whether the club wanted something in return of supplying trophies. It was felt that the club would like something in return. A few suggestions: being benched where showed, extra tickets for education, a breeder judge (realistically 2013 before able to pick a judge), clarification if there must be a certain numbers of entries (club still gets what we want in spite of entries), need to know if GG is supported both days. Pam suggested taking this to the membership to see if they want to show there. We need more information from Mike Stone on what they are offering before presenting to membership. New Business - Gaby announced that the St. Bernard Club of the Pacific is having a cardiac clinic (4/30-5/1) open to all breeds. Dr. Rick Keinle is going to talk about the function and structure of the heart and the diseases most commonly seen in Saints, which are similar to Newfs. The seminar is open to the public and 90 minutes in length. This is at their specialty at the Red Lion in Sacramento. He will do ultrasounds and auscultations on the 1st. $175 for doppler, $45 for auscultations. This will be put in the paper twice and on the web. There is concern that if not enough people sign up for the testing Dr. Keinle won t stay for the next day. Pam mentioned that Diane Lynch is doing a swim to donate money from swimming laps to NCA rescue. Pam recommended that we present to the membership that NCNC make a donation to support NCA rescue. Pam would also like to recommend to membership that we take out a club add for the national draft catalogue. The theme this year is the National Road Trip. The last time NCA hosted the national draft test was in The national would like to have all clubs place an add with working events that their club is involved in. NCNC was the second draft test on the west coast. Our water test was the first one in California. Ten dollars for a full page add and six dollars for a half page add. T-shirts are also available at a reduced charge until April 1st. Pam has forms if interested. Laura said it was a pleasure working with the board and appreciated the honor of the club having her as their president. No matter what has happened she has always tried to make decisions that were in the best interest of NCNC. MTA SP/LB 11:15.

8 Page 8 NewfsPaper General Meeting Minutes - 2/27/10 Called to order at 13:30. Ballots were passed for general membership approval of Robin Welter. She is now a general member. Laura thanked Pam Rubio and Gina Bonnell for arranging the banquet and Gina for the fortune cookies. Minutes were approved as published Pam Rubio/John Pearson. VP - Gaby gave the information for the St. Bernard s cardiac seminar and testing the last weekend in April by Dr. Keinle. Seminar is on 4/30 and low cost doppler and auscultation will be on 5/1 (Sunday). Pam reminded everyone that if their dog is one year or older it s a good time to have their dog auscultated or dopplered and results can be sent to OFA for their data base. The BOD minutes were read. A few remarks; Pam would like membership input if anyone is interested in supporting GG. If there is no interest we need to rethink supported entry. We are looking for a new superintendent for the regional due to lack of results, Laura suggested one that So. Cal uses and is pleased with. Pam would like membership to consider donating to Diane Lynch s swim for NCA rescue. We have money in philanthropy that could be used. Adds for the national draft test were mentioned. WDC - had two draft seminars so far this year that were very successful and well attended. There was special carting with two entries and both qualified, John Brennan with Boo and Lori L. with Rose. The next seminar will be on 3/13 at the test site in Gilroy. There will also be a carting specialty. Our spring draft test is 3/21/10. W/M s - There is an error in membership book, W/M s is not listed. Pam Jackson will be at the draft test. Anyone with suggestions for new products please see Pam. REGIONAL - Summer would like someone else to take home the very large perpetual trophies she has been keeping for ten years. John Pearson graciously volunteered. Rescue - Two weeks ago two brothers, 18 months +/-, strays from San Jose. They need to be neutered and will be split up. There is one Newf recuperating and the Reno girl has been placed in her forever home. June had to euthanize Laci (age 4) yesterday due to osteo sarcoma, this is after her anterior cruciate repair which she had rehabed nicely from. Laura thanked rescue for all their hard work they have done with the dogs. Old Business - none New Business - Pam R. asked the club to place an add in the national draft test catalogue. Kevin Gallagher asked if there were two draft tests, which there are. Adds are needed for two tests which would cost $20.00 MSP PR/LB Pam next asked the club to support Diane Lynch s swim for NCA rescue, she would like the club to make a donation. Pam s motion to donate $144 (the max requested for all laps). Mike Reyer suggested when a motion is made not to exceed $200, he amended the motion for that purpose. Pam amended her proposal not to exceed $144. Amended and seconded MR/LL. If anyone wants to purchase national draft test T-shirt, Pam has forms. Lori L said they will be practicing at the draft site location tomorrow if anyone is interested in joining them. Summer informed that next year is technically the 40th anniversary of NCNC s regional specialty. Larry Lerner mentioned that in 1970 the club did not officially exist ; Western States regional was the first, then our club specialty was in San Jose and the beginning of the club. Summer would like a theme, please send ideas to her. Braggs Joyce - last week Nina took back to back majors (4pts.) for her Ch. Pam - has a new kitty from the county animal shelter Laura - bragged for Todd and Debbie.Walter took breed at the regional in San Diego and took breed today. Also Sunday in Santa Clara. Dawn - Vigo and Nicky are coming together nicely as a draft team. Liz - Two weeks ago Haida had his 12th birthday. Mike - Karu, 1 1/2 years ago was diagnosed with a tumor in his heart. He had been medically seen every few months they had to go to UCD, but now can go every 6 months as tumor is slowly growing. Mike use to have a dog named Urs, just received an invitation for a scholarship if he joins the US Navy. Susan - Her boy Bruin who over Thanksgiving was very ill has now been given a clean bill of health and will be back in the show ring hopefully by the national. Elizabeth - Is taking her first puppy to the national. Christine - Jolie has made the Top 20 third year in a row and is very proud of her. 97$ Awards A motion was made for the oldest living Newfoundland in NCNC each year, with the year ending 12/31 MSP Ursula Cabalzar/PR. The Luis Parsons Award was presented, this not an award that will necessarily be given out each year. A replica of the original will go to the winner to keep. This first time award was presented to Lori Littleford, following is the letter Pam Rubio sent to the board recommending Lori: I would like to nominate Lori Littleford for the Luise Parsons award. In all my years in the club, since approximately 1975, there is only one person, who to me, should be the first recipient of this award. In the years that I have been active in the club, it is Lori who has stood out as the person who was always there. It never mattered if you had a dog with a sterling pedigree, Lori was there to help, mentor, whatever was needed. Her involvement in rescue over the years is a matter of record. She has volunteered her time and expertise over and over again. Can you remember a water or draft test/ seminar that she was not involved in? I can't, even going to the Reno area to put on a seminar. She single handedly took on the 1991/2 National Specialty, putting all the front money on (Continued on page 9)

9 April, 2010 Page 9 (Continued from page 8) her personal credit card. And she organized a wonderful group of volunteers who made it a success. She spearheaded the Working Dog class that we all now include in our regional specialties. On a personal note, there has never been a request that I have made of Lori that she refused. She has temperament tested many litters for me, and always agreed to help at any working test or seminar I've chaired. I have never heard her speak ill of anyone.
