1 Mar/April 2007 Vol. 11 Issue 2 Presidents Message by Joan Taylor My last message expressed concerns over the colder than normal weather, and here we are two months later experiencing the same. I am sure by the time you read this Spring will really be here! Our Match Show was successful and many exhibitors commented on how nice the facility was and how kind our members were. We will be holding a Match show there next year on the second Saturday in March and hopefully will have even more entries. I am sure if we continue to have a match the same time and place every year we will get more exhibitors each year. My thanks to Linda Billings and Kay Bleinberger for chairing this event. Due to a family emergency, Pam Ford was unable to coordinate the luncheon and many pitched in at the last minute and the luncheon was great. Thanks to Neil Billings and son Brian whose help was invaluable. Shaaron Plate arrived with baskets and raffle tickets and due to her efforts the treasury was enriched by $ Thanks also to those members who were stewards and to Sharon and Eric King who came to steward despite (Sharon) being very ill. That is real dedication to the club. I am happy to report that Pam Ford's daughter and new baby boy are now doing fine and all is well again at the Ford household. Shaaron Plate has agreed to chair our Annual Awards dinner which will be held on Thursday, April 26 at Enotria Restaurant. You should have received your invitations by now, please RSVP to Shaaron as soon as possible. We decided to have this on a week night to take place of our regular meeting night. There will be a brief meeting before the awards are handed out. Final preparations for our Specialty Show on April 28 will be discussed also. I hope all members plan to attend our Specialty, whether you are exhibiting or not. We always have a good time and Ray and Teresa have worked hard on this show and we need to show our support for their efforts. A lunch will be served and hopefully the weather will be as good as it was last year. We are hoping to have some field work classes later on this year, and maybe some obedience and rally classes. If you have any events you would like your club to host, please let us know. Looking forward to seeing all of you at the Awards dinner and the Specialty. CGRC Meeting Summary By Teresa Campbell Our general meeting was held Tuesday, February 27. The guest speaker was Vicki Rummel, Coordinator of Pets on Wheels accompanied by her Golden, Sienna. Vicki spoke about the facilities visited by the volunteers and their pets and the process for volunteering: Volunteer Process:. Contact Pets on Wheels through the website by , phone, fax or mail to request an application.. Once they get your returned application your pet will be scheduled for a screening to test the temperament of your pet to be sure the pet is appropriate for this type of job. You will need to bring your pet to a designation facility for the screening. The processing fee is $20. Assuming your pet is deemed appropriate for this type of work, they will discuss which facilities are looking for volunteers. Vicki also invited everyone to attend their Dog-a-Thon on September 29, 2007 from 10-3 at Oregon Ridge Park. Further information and an application is available on their website: This is just a reminder to be certain that your pet has permanent identification, either a tattoo or a microchip. The next step is register it! A wonderful intact golden was found just before New Years. He had no identification and though he was wearing a collar it was of no help as there were no tags. After a long search he was neutered, micro chipped and placed in a loving home. This dog has no vices and someone is out one very good dog. To save yourself the heartache be sure your pet is permanently identifiable. Chris Saint Sienna - from Pets on Wheels Page 1

2 CONFORMATION CLASS HELD FOR MEMBERS By Teresa Campbell Club members participated in two nights of conformation class conducted by Jamie Campbell and held at the Four Paws facility. The classes were offered to members as a way to give back a little for all they have done to help the club. Members and their Goldens ran through the conformation ring procedure, stacking, moving and free baiting. Jamie offered suggestions to help show each dog to their best potential. Both handlers and Goldens learned a lot and got a lot of exercise!! Jamie reminds everyone to keep it fun for their dog in order to maintain a good attitude for the show ring. The bigger news is that he won the Open B class of 40 Dogs with a whopping score of 199 to do so, under judge Don Levinson, beating Trouble and Noodle in the process AND winning HIGH IN TRIAL HONORS!!! Whoppee!!! Wanna hear cool? In the Open B class that day, my dogs placed: Nipper 1st place with a 199, Trouble took 3rd with a 198.5, and Noodle took 4th with a 198. Felt like a Dog Walker heading into the ring with all those dogs!!! Noodle is in semi retirement - but he took second place in Utility B with a 195 and First place in Open B with a at the Maryland Sporting Dog Obedience Trial on Saturday, April 7, His scores were enough to give him both High in Trial and High Combined Score Honors on the day. Nipper took second in Open B OUTSIDE IN THE COLD right behind Trouble with a We were to compete Saturday as well, but woke up to an inch of snow on the ground - Think a 5 minute out of sight stay with a Dalmatian in the SNOW is a stretch? 5 Dromara Lycinan s Heads Up, CD JH WC (Teddy) 10/14/1997-2/28/2007 Loved by the Hamilton s It is so hard when they are gone. Teddy was retired to son, companion/couch potato status after he was neutered around three years of age. He spent the next four years just being a dog. In the spring of 2005 I started to train a young bitch towards earning a JH title. Very shortly after starting to train, she became lame and I had to stop working with her. Not wanting to give up training with Cindy Williamson and Pam Ford I looked around to see who wanted to go play with me. I decided to take Teddy as he had not been involved in anything for so long. We started training in April and entered our first JH test two months later in June. The only reason I entered him was someone else was entering a dog that I knew Teddy was doing at least as well as. I thought if he could do it Teddy sure could. And Teddy did. He earned his first leg that weekend with no problem. He went on to earn his second leg with a perfect score and his third and fourth legs. I had entered Teddy at the National up in Gettysburg before he earned his fourth leg. Even though he had earned his title we went and he earned a fifth leg. He also earned his WC at the National. We then started to sporadically train for our SH in In October Teddy started to limp. I took him to the vets thinking he pulled something in training. The vet instantly diagnosed Teddy with osteosarcoma, bone cancer. It was like being hit with a brick wall. There are a few options for bone cancer. One is removal of the leg with cancer. I just couldn t do that to Teddy. He was nine years old and the recovery time was not that much shorter than his life expectancy after amputation. I opted to give Teddy prednisone along with pain medication. At first he was like a new dog, no limping at all. By Christmas, the limp was back and the tumor was growing. On the night of February 28, 2007 with no warning, Teddy s body gave out. It was time for him to go. It will never be an easy thing to do. Rest well, sweet Ted. Love Always Alaine. Maggie Rosen Loved by the Rosen s Her wagging tale and bright smile said it all... "Welcome" to thousands of visitors at Mark Downs Office Furniture in Cockeysville. Over her 12 years at Mark Downs she had become somewhat of a "celebrity" in Cockeysville where people would drop by the store just to visit with Maggie. Maggie, a chestnut brown Golden Retriever knew her job very well. Monday thru Friday she greeted hundreds of small business owners and corporate executives. On Saturday she played with children and even babies of small business owners who brought their offspring on a business errand to buy a desk or chair. There were times when customers found their children asleep resting on top of the big dog's belly. Older children got a different type of greeting as they ran together weaving in and out of the furniture in the showroom. Most dogs never get a life so good, rescued at the age of two by Steve Rosen, Maggie suffered no serious illness during her lifetime. She worked 5 and sometimes 6 days a week until her last few days. It's rare for large dogs she was healthy to the ripe old age of 14+ (100 in people years). "One of her favorite visitors was the mailman... each day he brought her a treat. If she wasn't waiting at the front door they would call her over the public address system and she would run to greet the mailman." said Steve Rosen, President of Mark Downs. Over the last three days, Mark Downs employees on their own quietly went to the vet to visit and say their farewells. Maggie was the official "customer greeter" for the past 5 years. She promoted herself to the position the day after Dusty, Steve's first golden and Maggie's best friend, died. On that day she took her "post" at the front door. Over the years Maggie "taught" hundreds of children that big dogs can be friendly and gentle. She has helped people get over their fear of dogs. One man who never left his house for any other reason, came to the store on a regular basis, just to visit with Maggie. We will all miss her... there are so many customers that will ask for her--- she's made hundreds, thousands of friends over the 12 years that she "worked" at Page 5

This mailing list, a service of Yahoo Groups, also allows us to archive the club communications, maintain a club calendar, and survey members anonymously. Plus, it s so much cheaper, faster, and easier than the U.S. postal service! Our club group can be accessed through this link - pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/ chesapeakegrc. It is a private mailing list, maintained by our webmaster. The addresses and messages posted cannot be viewed by anyone else on the internet. Yahoo Groups also provides options for you, the club member. You can set your account up to receive messages as they are sent, once a day in digest form, or even chose no . No matter what you choose, you can view all posts in the message archive. While some Yahoo Groups are set up like an announcement list, with only the moderator able to post messages; our club is small enough that we encourage everyone to share their Golden-related announcements, brags or questions.
