1 The Newsletter of the Chesapeake Golden Retriever Club March/April 2006 Vol-10, #2 Presidents Message What a great time we had at the CGRC Banquet. I d like to thank Janus and her husband, Jon for hosting this year s Banquet at their beautiful home. The food was delicious and the chocolate cake was so beautiful we hated to cut it. This year the club had a number of club plaques recipients and both the Cory and Asti Trophies were awarded. It was wonderful to see so many members enjoying and working with their Goldens accomplishing a variety of titles. Congratulations to all. Thanks, Kay, for taking care of ordering and awarding the plaques and trophy engraving. Our next upcoming event will be our club Specialty held at Lums Pond, Delaware in conjunction with the Wilmington Kennel Club show on Saturday, April 29. We encourage all to participate and join us for lunch. Thanks to Chris Saint and all our members who volunteered/participated in the second Show N Go held recently. Both events were very successful and enjoyable for those who attended. Plans are also in the works for a September match. If you would like to help, please contact Cheryl Dunkin at Cheryl.Dunkin@flash.net Hope to see all of you at the CGRC Specialty! Teresa Past/Up Coming Events Help Wanted! We need members to come and help with stewarding, serving lunch, runners, hosts, raffle ticket sales, and a host of other opportunities. We also need people to donate items and make up raffle baskets prior to the show. Our raffles are probably the clubs main income maker as all income from the donated baskets and products go directly to our treasury. Make sure you come out and buy or sell plenty of raffle tickets. You can play a valuable roll by just showing up for the day and working on an easy, yet important task. And what better way to spend a day than watching some of the best Golden Retrievers in our area. Bring the family. Enjoy the day. Have some great fun! Chesapeake GRC s tribute to the Chesapeake Bay. So grab the family or a friend, but come on over to Bear Delaware on April 29th and have one of the best Golden Days of the year. Stay overnight and spend the following day shopping in Tax Free Delaware. You know you have all that income tax return money just burning a hole in your pocket, so save some bucks and do your shopping. Potomac Valley GRC Specialty If you really need a Golden fix before our own specialty, our sister club, PVGRC will hold their specialty on April 15th at the Howard County Fairgrounds off Rt 70. CGRC Supports Baltimore County Kennel Club Chesapeake GRC, at the invitation of BCKC, will provide the Golden Retriever Eduction Booth at the April 23rd BCKC annual all breed show at Timonium Fairgrounds. Shaaron Plate, CGRC s Public Education Co-Ordinator will be the guiding light with this project. There will be a Raffle of baskets and goodies, along with handpainted slate shingles to be purchased. CGRC will have their flyers and educational materials, and talk with the public about our breed and responsible dog ownership. If you would like to spend a few hour helping out, drop us a note at: ChesapeakeGRC@Comcast.net Show N Go s As of right now, our next Show N Go is scheduled for September at the WKC Training Center in Delaware. More on this event as we continue our planning. We re hoping to be able to do some over the summer months, but this will depend on the installation of a new Air Conditioning system in the 4 Paws Training room. The Training room is a seperate area from the bathing and office area which is currently air conditioned. We ll let you know as things progress. Below are just a few of the great accomplishments that have occurred. NEW SHOW DOG HALL OF FAME - BISS Ch. Numoons Lion-N-Tigger-N-Bear Oh My, SDHF - Owner/Handler, Jamie Campbell. Bear came to us a little over two years ago to work with Jamie as her junior showmanship dog. He was full of energy and his co-owner, Beverly Wilson said he needed a job to do. In their first year out, Jamie (along with Bear) was #1 Golden Junior Handler and #1 Sporting Junior Handler. In addition to showing in juniors, Jamie started to show Bear in the breed ring. Bear was very successful starting with his BOB win at Chesapeake GRC s Specialty and continuing with numerous group wins and placements. Full of energy and that Golden desire to please, many times Bear went from showing in the Juniors ring to the Breed ring, to the Group ring and sometimes the Best in Show ring. Continued on page 3 Golden Tales The Newsletter of the Chesapeake Golden Retriever Club, Inc Page 2 Friday Saturday Sunday 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM NOON to 4:00 PM On November 26, 2005, Bear took a Group 3 to complete the total 25 points needed to acquire his SDHF (Show Dog Hall of Fame) title, owner handled by Jamie Campbell, a junior handler. Quite an accomplishment for such a young team. We are grateful for the support and encouragement we received from Golden people up and down the East coast. After a well deserved rest, Bear will be back out showing selectively in Breed and Juniors during the 2006 season. Chris Saint - Eloise & Gladys Today was a full day of Obedience.Breeze, Eloise [her daughter] and Gladys [ the almighty Clumber] all went to Oriole Dog Training Club Show. Eloise [Medea s Rainbow s End CD RN] opened and closed the Show day qualifying in Open A and winnning a 3 dog runnoff for 3rd place with a [for her 2nd leg] and attaining her Rally advanced title with a 93 at 11 years old. Breeze [Timberline After The Rain CD] got her third leg in Rally novice with a 91 and is now officially retired [to the whelping box for now. Puppies are due May 2nd.] Gladys at 11 showed them what life is all about getting her 2nd leg in Rally advanced. Barbara Leight - Corey Medea s Rainbow Reflection,CD (AKA Corey) got her second leg in Open A on March 19 at DOTC...with a score of 191.

3 Continued from page 2 Sandy Selander - Et. Al. LOCAL GAL FINISHES IN A FLASH AT CGRC SUPPORTED ENTRY! In what can only be characterized as finishing in grand style, Sandy Selander s Amber (CH. Online s I Have A Dream) cleaned up at the Maryland Sporting Dog Association s back to back sporting dog shows March 4th and 5th, garnering back to back 4 point majors and an impressive Best of Winners, Best of Breed and Sporting Group 4th from the classes on Saturday, and Best of Winners and Best of Opposite Sex on Sunday. The US Geological Survey in Reston, VA noted a distinct seismic event in the Bel Alton area of Southern Maryland, at the moment breeder judge Michael Faulkner awarded Amber her Best of Winners and Best of Opposite wins. Owner Sandy Selander was last seen flat on the floor of building A, gasping for air and the return of her composure, while Judge Faulkner led the gallery in applause, as the Best of Breed dog, CH. Nautilus Joe Millionaire, and Miss Amber took their victory lap around the ring. Miss Amber is the second champion Kona daughter (CH. Suntory Headline at Online) of Sandy s to finish. Following on the heels of her half-sister, Miss Brooke (CH. Online s Brooklyn Bridge) who earned her championship last fall after going Best of Winners for a 4 point major at the Garden State Specialty, Amber finished just 4 months later, handled exclusively by her handler and best friend, Kelly Shufflebottom. Kelly has finished not only both half-sisters, but their mom CH. Kona, too, who herself finished going Best of Winners at the 2002 Garden State Specialty. Looking ahead in 2006 Online Goldens third Kona daughter, Miss Janie (Online You ll Be In My Heart) is getting in shape to continue the championship tradition of her two half-sisters and mother. Although only a puppy, Miss Janie has begun her show training, as she has taken up temporary residence at Camp Shufflebottom, for what may best be characterized as a Spring Tune Up. The rest of this show year promises to be a most exciting time for Online Goldens, and we are looking forward to bigger and better accomplishments in the many months to come..ss Two Clubs, Same Dog, Top Honors For the first time ever, in the history of both the Chesapeake Golden Retriever Club and the Potomac Valley Golden Retriever Club, the same dog has won top show dog honors in both clubs for the same year. CH. Gosling s Online King of Swing, affectionately referred to as Ben, was awarded CGRC s prestigious Corey trophy for 2005, and also was awarded Potomac Valley s 2005 Golden Pines Memorial Trophy for his accumulation of conformation honors in both clubs. Owner Sandy Selander was torn between not being able to attend both clubs annual awards banquets, having to attend the PVGRC banquet because she agreed to serve as Banquet Chair. Both trophies were given on the same evening, and the award of each club trophy to Ben was kept a complete surprise from Sandy. Although Sandy was present to hear of Ben s winning the PVGRC trophy, word of his winning the CGRC trophy did not reach Sandy until the next day, when she opened a picture mail photo showing Marshall Landis accepting the trophy on behalf of Sandy and Ben. Maryland State Police records reflect some unknown object flying up and around I-95 near Towson, MD that next afternoon, and then continuing towards Kay Bleinberger s house, in hot pursuit of taking possession of the Corey trophy...ss Rabies Challenge Fund World-renown vaccine research scientist and practicing veterinarian, Dr. W. Jean Dodds of California, and pet vaccine disclosure advocate, Kris L. Christine of Maine, have established The Rabies Challenge Fund to raise money to fund a 7 year rabies vaccine challenge study in the United States. In addition to the challenge study, the fund will finance a study of the adjuvants used in veterinary rabies vaccines and establish a rabies vaccine adverse reaction reporting system. Rabies vaccination is the one immunization required by law across the country for domestic dogs and cats. Researchers believe this vaccine cause the most and worst adverse reactions in animals. The Rabies Challenge Fund has been founded to improve the safety of rabies vaccines and to determine, by challenge, if they confer immunity for 5, 6, or 7 years. Dr. Schultz has not done a 7 year CHALLENGE study on the canine rabies study. His serological studies show that dogs have antibody titer counts at levels known to confer immunity 7 years after vaccination, but that is not challenge data. The French released a study in 1992 by a research team led by Michel Aubert which demonstrated that dogs were immune to a rabies CHALLENGE 5 years after 1 vaccination. So, there is good reason to believe that the laws in this country may be requiring us to overvaccinate our dogs to protect public health. Given that researchers believe the rabies vaccine causes the most and worst adverse reactions and that no state will extend it booster requirements without a challenge study, it is imperative that this study be done. This research will save vastly more lives than it takes.... Having had personal experience with a vaccination reaction being the major contributor to the death of a puppy (as confirmed by post mortum), this project is certainly important to Kathy and I and should be to all our members. The protection provided by a 1 year vaccine has been shown to last as long as 3 years, and the 3 year vaccine has been shown to last as long as 5 or 6 years. There are test that can be done to show that your dogs current vaccination protection is still active and it does not need to be re-vaccinated as required by the state and your vets suggested schedule. Talk to your vet and find out what your alternatives are. I urge you to be come educated on the problem and visit the link below for more information. Please be sure to read the FAQ page and especially the PDF link provided... MJL Golden Tales The Newsletter of the Chesapeake Golden Retriever Club, Inc Page 3

4 Canine Cancer Vaccine By Diane Sparks Since 1998, the University of Wisconsin has been producing an anti-cancer vaccine for dogs diagnosed with malignant melanomas. The treatment is still experimental and is limited to only the melanoma form of the disease, and not all dogs with melanoma respond to the treatment, but for those that do respond, the difference in recovery expectation is exceptional. Canine Melanoma, which is similar to one form of skin cancer in humans, is very aggressive in dogs and accounts for one out of twenty cancer diagnoses. Tumors often occur spontaneously in the mouth, nail bed and foot pad. While most successfully treated in its early stage by surgical removal of tumors followed by chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy, the bad news has been that, when treated with conventional methods alone, 75% of dogs with advanced oral melanoma die within one year of diagnosis, with average life expectancy of only two to three months. In most cases, the melanoma usually recurred or spread even after complete removal of the cancer. There is good news. Studies done at the University of Wisconsin-Madison indicate that about 40% of dogs with a melanoma tumor present responded to a vaccine created from actual melanoma cells. Once an affected dog has had a melanoma surgically removed, researchers extracted and purified individual cells from the tumor and injected DNA into those cells that accelerated production of chemicals called cytokines. Cytokines stimulate production of certain white blood cells in the body. The altered cells are then injected back into patients in the form of a vaccine. If the patient reacts positively to the injection, the dog s immune system is super-charged to fight specifically against melanoma cells. After the initial research at the University of Wisconsin, The Animal Medical Center and researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York staged another round of preclinical testing. In this study, nine dogs with advanced melanoma were given periodic injections of a modified DNA vaccine. The dogs showed no side effects or toxicities. Two dogs showed no evidence of the disease when they were checked at the end of the study. Four dogs survived over a year with the longest survivor still alive after almost two years. Average survival was increased from 3 months to over 12 months!!! Further work is needed to improve the vaccine so that a higher percentage of dogs with melanoma will respond, but for the families of survivors, the current vaccine and improved survival times are nothing short of miraculous. John Cotter The Asti, Josh, Uque Companion Dog Memorial Trophy Winning Essay Application My dog Ben earned his Companion Dog title this year and he was terrific in the ring. He placed first in each trial with scores of 196.5, and In the last two trials we were runner up to the High in Trial award. This year he also earned a WC and JH hunting titles and a Novice A Jumpers agility title. I was very proud of him. We had a good year. However, earning titles is not the most important thing. To put this in perspective, when I contacted the breeder, Janine Fiorito, to discuss purchasing a dog sired from her wonderful dog Dar, she asked me what type of dog I wanted. I told Janine that I wanted a gentle house dog that had all of the wonderful qualities of a Golden Retriever - happy, gentle, intelligent and hopefully healthy. I said my goal would be to train the dog in obedience, field and agility and hope we would be successful. What was very important to me was having a wonderful dog that I could share my life with for many years. Colabaugh s Ben Dar Rules, CD, JH, WC, NAJ is living up to my dreams. I have had experience in the obedience ring and four of my previous dogs have earned CD titles and they performed very well also. I like to train and compete in the obedience ring because it allows me to spend quality time with my dog and create a real partnership. We try not to take ourselves too seriously but do enjoy the success we have had. I have found that each dog is different and each has taught me something that hopefully will make me a better partner. Ben enjoys the time we go out together to train or walk in a field or just ride in a car. He seems to enjoy learning and always amazes the neighbors when he goes to the end of the driveway to retrieve the newspaper in the morning. One of the pleasures I have found by training and competing in the obedience ring is the number of friends I have made. We all train our dogs and hope we can do very well. Sometimes this works out and sometimes it does not. My dog never did that before is a very well known and used phrase by obedience trainers. And although we are trying for the top award, we really just want to do the best we can and are really just competing against ourselves. As a result, I have found many people praising other competitors when they have done well and exchanging training tips to help one another. I m not sure you see this type of camaraderie in the breed rings. I encourage new obedience trainers to seek knowledgeable competitors for help and assistance. As a person once told me, If you want to be the best, train with the best. Obedience training is an opportunity to spend quality time with your dog and make your life with the dog more enjoyable. And above all, make the experience enjoyable for you and the dog. It is unlikely your lifework is going to change so remember this is a hobby with one of your best friends. Best of luck and success. Golden Tales The Newsletter of the Chesapeake Golden Retriever Club, Inc Page 4

5 What is Obedience? By Chris Saint Obedience is when your dog does what you ask, when you ask. Why is a dog obedient? A dog is obedient because there is a relationship based on love, trust, and wanting to please. What is a CD? A CD is a title for the entire world to see. The CD or Companion Dog title lets the world know that you and your dog have a bond. Your dog on three separate occasions was willing under unusual circumstances to follow your directions and complete a series of exercises according to the standards set up by the AKC. The CD title does not say your score or the number of shows required to complete this achievement. I have had dogs who have easily scored 197s and others who struggled to make a 176. I was equally proud of each of these dogs, because the all strived to do their best. Dogs that are not obedient, do not get taken on trips and do not share that special bond. My dogs learn basic obedience as very young puppies so that they can go to the nursing home to visit my parents. The dogs and I get great pleasure out of these visits with not only my parents but also the other residents. Dogs, who have never been taught how to walk at your side on a loose leash or sit on command, miss the joys of Pats on Wheels. Dogs who have not learned to come when they are called, miss getting to run loose at a park or swim in the river or play in the waves at the beach. Dogs who are not trained, do not get to hear the pride and pleasure in their owner s voice when they do something right for the first time. Untrained dogs hear frustration in their owners voices, and are soon relegated to being a stay at home dogs. Trained dogs are welcome almost everywhere. If you have never trained a dog, go to a show and watch some classes. See the joy on both the dogs and owners faces as they finish exercises. Then sign up for a class. Find an instructor who wants you to succeed, but is not worried about scores. Instead celebrates each victory along the way while training. It does not matter how you train slip collars, flat collars, head collars, food, clickers, or toys. What does matter is that training is fun for both of you, and you stop to celebrate each small step in the chain to an obedient dog. Please celebrate with those of us who have shown our dogs this year and achieved titles. Each person and dog should be recognized for being lucky enough to have formed a special relationship leading to that title. Chesapeake GRC Website Statistics Submitted 04/04/2006 In the last week there have been 218 downloads of our Specialty premium from the website. We have interest. Let s hope they follow through! During the month of March 2006 there were more than 14,000 website hits. Website hits are good for raising the CGRC website s Google ranking. When someone searches the internet, the results are listed in order of the Google ranking. CGRC s Google ranking allows our site to appear before others on many types of searches. When those searches are puppy related, it gives us the chance to educate puppy buyers. We are currently working on a new set of puppy informational pages to take advantage of that opportunity. Following are some other website statistics for March 2006 Top Referring Sites: Google U.S. Yahoo Msn GRCA puppy referrals GRCA local clubs Google Canada The most visited pages are: Puppy referral Pictures Puppy training Obedience Show N Go pictures Events Club information Pam Ford is to be commended for the work, time, attention and effort she has put into our clubs website. Rankings, as shown above, do not come easily, and do not come at all unless your site provides the resources the public is looking for. If you have surfed around and visited other Golden Retriever club sites, the one thing that becomes obvious is that CGRC s site clearly presents a more professional image than most any other site. Pam became webmaster when time, family health problems, and work related issues no longer allowed me to produce it. Pam volunteered for this duty, picked up the ball, and has truly scored major accomplishments. On a historical note, the Chesapeake GRC site, in its first publication, was one of, if not the first club site, ever to be found on the web. When our site was initially published and you would search on Golden Retriever only two sites were returned - Chesapeake and the now defunct Golden Retrievers in Cyberspace (GRIC). GRIC ceased operation upon the death of its creator - Helen Redlus. Helen s site set the resource standard for golden retriever information which is still followed today. Chesapeake GRC s site continues to be a tribute to this great lady s vision as an educational resource to the golden world. Thank you Pam...MJL Golden Tales The Newsletter of the Chesapeake Golden Retriever Club, Inc Page 5
