1 May/October 2007 Vol. 11 Issue 3 Presidents Messages by Joan Taylor I hope everyone had a great summer. I think the oppressive heat is finally gone and we can all get back out and work with our dogs. Even though we did not have a meeting in August the club has been busy planning events for the fall. The annual picnic will be held on Saturday, September 22, more on that in this newsletter. I hope everyone will attend with their goldens and their families as we always have a great time. It is a good time to catch up on all the golden news and chat with old friends. Call Pam Ford (#on back page) (since this is late going out for the folks who don t get this information on line) if you can attend or respond to the request on page seven. CGRC will be hosting a specialty in conjunction with NEMKC at the Turkey Cluster at Howard County Fairgrounds on Friday, November 23. Ray and Teresa Campbell have been working hard to make this another successful show, please plan to enter those promising pups and get the veterans back out for a day in the limelight. We are looking for someone to host the Holiday party in December. This is typically our best attended meeting of the year and members will bring food and beverages and reimburse the hostess for food they purchase for this fun event. Let me know if you are interested in opening your home to the club members during this festive time of the year.new officers will be voted on at the December party and we will start another productive year. Presidents message: from May June The April Specialty was a great success, thanks to all the hard work by show chair Ray Campbell and all the club members who helped with the food and the raffle. It was a major in dogs and bitches this year and it was great to have such a nice turnout. Thanks also to Shaaron Plate for organizing the raffle and sale items and to Gale Bragg who I am told sold many raffle tickets as well. I believe they made around $400 for the club in just a few hours! Unfortunately that momentum we were showing as a club in the first quarter of the year seems to have stalled. The poor attendance at the May board meeting was rather disheartening, we barely had a quorum. We need someone to fill the remainder of Marshall Landis' term as a board member, please contact me if you are willing to serve in this capacity. It only involves a usually brief meeting every other month. The club is currently making arrangements to have another specialty this year. This time it will be at the Turkey Cluster in November in conjunction with Northeastern MD Kennel Club. Ray Campbell has volunteered to serve as show chair again and has already started the paperwork necessary to make this show happen. This will be a great opportunity for CGRC to host another show that should draw majors again and further establish our credibility as a serious Golden club. But to do so we need the support of all club members. Remember that profits made are directed CGRC Meeting Summary The speaker was Joseph Bernstein, veterinary dermatologist who discussed various allergies and infections commonly seen in dogs in this area. The treasurer reported we had significantly increased our treasury due to the raffles and merchandise sold by Shaaron Plate and Gale Bragg at the Match show and at the Specialty. Teresa reported that CGRC has been approved by AKC to hold a specialty in November in conjunction with NEMKC at the Turkey Cluster. Application for the specialty to be held in April 2008 has been received by AKC but they have not received the application from Wilmington KC so this approval is pending the application from the host club. Kay Bleinberger has been approved as a CGC evaluator and will serve as judge at the September CGC to be held at Friends Park in conjunction with NEMKC show and go. We are still looking for someone to fill the Board position left vacant by Marshall Landis. Members were asked to contact Linda Billings with names of possible judges for the Match show in March The Health clinic that has been proposed with GoldHeart rescue has been put on hold until September. We are also looking for a volunteer to chair the club picnic in September. Chris Saint will be chairing a Rally event in the fall for beginners and also a run through for advanced, details will be finalized in September. toward club activities that all members can enjoy. Have a great summer. Joan Page 1

2 In Memoriam: We had to say goodbye to these fine companions. CH Lycinan s Sweet William CDX, TD, WC, VCX, OS 3/25/96 8/18/07 Loved and missed by Cindy Williamson, Bob Slocum and their family. Known and loved as Bill by many. He was so SPECIAL and words will never seem to do him justice. He was and will continue to be an inspiration to us all. LAURELRIDGE WINTER PROMISE, CD Missy 1/26/93 5/1/07 Loved by the Dunkin s It seemed too good to be true 14 years and every day a blessing. Missy was definitely my dog. She followed me everywhere, and though she could barely walk the day before she left us, as I was cutting the lawn I looked up on the hill and somehow she had managed to find me and was lying there looking down on me. That is how I ll remember her. I ll never forget the Baltimore County Kennel Club Show when Clare Owings handled her to win Best of Winners and Best of Opposite Sex AND a 4 point major. The win was thrilling, but what meant the most was all of my CGRC friends clapping and shouting and sharing in the day. Thank you all for the memories. Cheryl Submitted by Marshall and Kathy Landis: Am/Can/UCI-Nat/UCI-Int/SKC-Int/SKC-Nat/ Ch. Aim-Hi's Alaskan Flyer SDHF CAN HOF CGC BIS-CANADA / BIS-UCI SKC 0/18/94-5/31/07 It is with a very sad heart I tell you that Taiyed's Father was helped to the bridge to be with Bear, DeDe, and his daughter Gemmy. Flyer was an exceptional and one of a kind Golden, loved by 2 exceptional and wonderful owners, Marcie and Mike Kardatzke from Soldotna Alaska. If it were not for their kindness and generosity, and that of Beverly Nolan, our Taiyed would not be. Flyer, the fields are lush and green, filled with golden and yellow flowers. Fly up that hill with your friends, tails held high as if they are rudders in a golden sea. Run to the top of the mountain as your lungs fill with the sweet air, you feel no pain, no strain, the heart beats strong again. Run and be happy, we shall meet again. Page 2

3 BVISS _Lycinan s Dromara Jingles Belle / Sharon King BOSVISS-CH Goldrige Galexy Dancer-RA/ Kay Bleinberger Thanks and more thanks to all members who contributed to the success of our specialty through their show entries, bringing their delicious food items for the luncheon, donating/providing the beautiful trophies to be awarded, setting up an education table and selling raffle tickets. It was so gratifying seeing exhibitors and club members socializing and enjoying lunch, Golden puppies playing in x-pens as well as the older guys and girls being loved and fussed over by all. The weather was perfect for Saturday (thank goodness!!) and we were pleased with the turnout. Of course there's always room for more!! We hope to increase our numbers each year. Once again, thanks for your support - we couldn't do it without you! Ray & Teresa WD/BOW-Numoon s Just Because Wilson/Campbell shown by Jamie Campbell Future Champion? 4 Brags Joan Taylor on her Grand Daughter: Lt. Meghan Starr and she graduated with honors from West Point May, Needless to say I am very proud of her. Lt. Starr is the co-owner of "Hudson" - Lycinan Goldridge Point of Freedom and visits him whenever she get home on leave. When she finishes her 5 year commitment to the Army, Hudson will live with her. He proudly carries a West Point leash and collar Sandy Selander "Bond" aka "Honeybear's 007 At Online" took WD. The good news is it was an overwhelming 5 point major. Congratulations to Sue Rocco on Jesse s earning his championship with back to back majors in South Carolina this past weekend. Jesse is a handsome boy, I believe a repeat breeding of the one that produced her Margo (who I have had the opportunity to do field training with). Cindy s Bill is the sire. Submitted by Pam Ford The banquet award recipients for 2007 are as follows: Chris Saint for- Timberline After the Rain, CD, RN and Medea's Rainbow's End, CDX, RN Barb Light for- Medea's Rainbow Reflection, CD, RA, CGC Sandy Selander for- CH. Online I Have A Dream Diane Sparks: Trouble is kickin up some dirt in the ring this spring. He's loving swimmin in the rivers down here and looks as though he is feeling in his Prime. At the Long-Shore Trial in Yorktown Heights, NY, OTCh Laurelridge Nothin B Trouble UDX4 scored a perfect 200 in the open B class under judge Susan King. He also won Utility B going HIT and HC. I was honored to be there with him and help a little... :) Cheryl - I guess I'll keep him! Congrats! Cheryl Dunkin : Laurelridge Ashley s Blue Legacy, handled by Jamie Campbell, took Best of Winners at the Monmouth County Kennel Club show May 26, 2007 earning his 1 st point. He earned his 2 nd point at the Union County Kennel Club show on May 27, Blu is out of Lycinan-Laurelridge s Ashley, CD and CH Lycinan s Sweet William, CDX, TD. May 28, 2007, at Union County Kennel Club, June 2, & 3 at the Charlottesville Albemarle Kennel Club and June 24, 2007 at Virginia Kennel Club. Thanks to Jamie Campbell for her beautiful handling. Chris Saint and Barb Leight were waiting for the results to be posted on the UKC website before coming forward with this info. UCDX Medea's Rainbow Reflection,CDX, RA (Corey) was on the 2006 UKC Obedience All Star list for 2006, ranked 48th in Novice. She was invited to participate in the All Star Invitational Obedience Competition at the UKC Premier in Kalamazoo, Michigan in June. I sent in her entry wondering if we would really go. It all came together, we did go and I had a great support group: Chris Saint, Bernie Jordan and my sister went along. We had a chance to do a run-through the evening before the trial. On June 15, we showed in the Novice Class with dogs with major titles - in fact the First place dog in Novice was an OTCH dog. Corey held her own and did a great job - she scored and we wound up tied for 7th place in the Novice Class!! It was a great experience - we had a wonderful time and we're very proud of our All Star. 6 Toby's Vacation Adventure I just got back from the best vacation a dog could ever have and I wish it wasn't over yet! We spent the week in a beach front house in a place called Hatteras, North Carolina. I loved sitting on the beach each day between my owners' chairs watching for sandpipers and seagulls on the beach. When I saw one, I was free to chase it up the beach. After several hundred feet the bird would always turn the other direction and I would follow, turning like a cutting horse after a cow. Back and forth, I wouldn't let the bird came back and land, though it tried. Finally, it would fly inland and I quickly learned to scan the horizon for the next bird to chase. I would spend hours at this game while my family sat on the beach. When I got tired, I'd sit with my owners and rest. When it got too hot on the beach, I'd dig a hole in the sand under their beach chair and lay in the cool, damp, shaded hole. When my family went swimming in the ocean, I followed them and swam back and forth through the surf. I never did get the hang of the boogie boards they tried to balance me on, but I bodysurfed the waves back to shore several times! After the sand was washed off, we would swim in the pool. 2-year-old Emily loved to hold my tail and get pulled back and forth through the pool as I swam. She squealed and giggled so loud it hurt my ears! When I was tired of swimming, I just curled up on a chair and watched thepool volleyball game. I was a good dog and didn't pop the inflatable volleyball. An entire week spent with no leash. freedom to come and go and visit as I chose. Once, I tried to get in the hot tub with the family, even climbed the shaky stool to reach it, but they told me "no". It was the only time all week I heard that word. At dusk, thousands of ghost crabs came out of holes in the beach. They were so fun to chase and dig for! And nobody told me to stop digging. Boy, could I send the sand flying! My food ration was even upped to 7 cups per day and I'm still dropping weight. What a training program! The only thing I would change would be the number of times per day I had to get sand squirted off me in order to get back in the house! Oh well, we are back home now, everyone is missing the beach and sad to see vacation end. But, I hear they have a deposit on the house for next year! Toby owned and loved by Pam and Jeffrey Ford Some time ago I noticed that the puppy inquiries coming into the website were largely from people who were doing their research and looking for a breeder to speak to about acquiring a puppy 6 to 12 months in the future. The good news about this is that the GRCA s education message appears to be getting through to people. The bad news is that our puppy referral process is set up only to deal with people who want a puppy now! If we are not prepared to work with people in their quest for a Golden Retriever, the high volume breeders with slick websites will be all too happy to step in! With the approval of the CGRC board and permission to use content from referral letters created by the Garden State Golden Retriever Club and Cindy Williamson, I have created a letter to be sent out automatically whenever someone s our website breeder referral address. The response will be instant, requiring no manual intervention. I invite CGRC member breeders to add their name and address to the breeder referral list to be included in this letter. Currently, we receive approximately 4 inquiries per week. Inclusion on this list can be changed as breeding plans change with just an to me. And as always, each member is bound by the CGRC Code of Ethics. The CGRC litter referral program will remain as is, with litter clearances being validated by the referral chairperson prior to posting litter details on the website. The breeder referral program is in addition to the existing litter referral. If you are a CGRC breeder would like to help educate the public by participating in our breeder referral program, please send me an . Thanks in advance, Pamela Ford Page 6
