News You Can Use Yes, we re a little late with the Fall Newsletter, but there were a LOT of things going on in the Kiko world the last few months. Most notable was the large number of Kiko sales held this year. We covered some of those in our Summer Newsletter, but just since the first of September, there have been SIX production sales featuring Kiko breeding stock. From The National Kiko Registry Fall 2014 Maryland Buck Test NKR clients have top performers! The first of these sales was the Bluegrass Performance Invitational Premiere Buck and Doe Sale held Sept. 6 in Frankfort, Ky. Although this was not an exclusively Kiko-oriented event, Kiko genetics dominated the sale. The sale included the Gold, Silver and Bronze standard performing bucks from the 2014 Western Maryland Pasture-Based Meat Goat Performance Test plus 56 does consigned by those farms participating in the test. Clients of the National Kiko Registry dominated the performance test and the sale! Randy and Jodie Majanscik of Butler, Ky., had the top-indexing buck, a purebred Kiko. Brent Ballinger of Bardstown, Ky., had two bucks in the top-ten, including the No. 3 indexing buck. Craig Adams of Litchfield, Ill., had the most parasite resistant buck and Kendell and Dana Barnes of Winchester, Ky., had the second-best buck for parasite resistance. For the second year in a row, NKR client Lake Fork Kikos of Alba, Texas, had the top bucks in the Eastern Oklahoma State College Buck Performance Test. Awards included Herdsman of the Year, Grand Champion and Reserve Champion average daily weight gain. The owners of Lake Fork Kikos are Kraig and Suzanne Stemme. Kraig, a DVM, has participated in numerous NKR educational conferences. Suzanne is the Cuisine columnist for Goat Rancher magazine. The National Kiko Registry congratulates these Kiko breeders for their hard work and dedication to improving the Kiko breed. It is no easy task to select the correct genetics, breed at certain times of the year for efficient testing, pay the fees for nominating bucks to these tests and handling the transport and other expenses involved in performance testing their goats. This dedication by Kiko breeders helps producers across the nation, regardless of Kiko registry affiliation and reaffirms the National Kiko Registry as the Jodie and Randy Majanscik s Kiko buck was the top-indexing buck in the Western Maryland Pasture-Based Meat Goat Performance Test. home of the most performance-tested Kiko genetics anywhere in the world. The high-selling buck in the Bluegrass sale was consigned by Brent Ballinger and was purchased by Gery Glover of Maryland. M.R. Goats (Mike and Lorrie Renick) of West Virginia consigned the high-selling doe. She was purchased by Judy and Johnny Smiddy of LaFolette, Tenn. Percentage does averaged $413. Purebred does averaged $625. New Zealand does averaged $650 with the high-seller bringing $1,000. Bucks brought an average of $625. n

Oklahoma Hills Meat Goat Conference The National Kiko Registry offered this educational opportunity Sept at Goat Hills Kikos in Porum, Okla. The conference with a focus on the financial aspects of running a profitable goat business was open to producers of all breeds of goats with all expenses underwritten by the NKR. A big Thank You to Dave and Linda Sparks for providing the venue for this great event. Snapshots from the 2-day conference! NKR-registered Kikos bring top-dollar! After the conference concluded, attendees were invited to hang around for the first annual Oklahoma Hills production sale. Seventeen consignors from nine states offered a variety of NKR-registered breeding stock for sale to the highest biddder. Forty-three buyers from 12 states made bids. Thirty-five New Zealand does averaged $1,402 per head. Forty-three purebreds averaged $1,012 each, one of the highest per-head averages ever for purebred Kiko does (one 88% Kiko doe that brought $800 was averaged in with the purebreds). Two percentage Kiko does averaged $837.50, another record-breaking average. This was another great example of the growing demand for Kiko breeding stock and the quality of animals consigned to these private production sales that offer only NKR-regsitered breeding stock. 2

Appalachian Kikos Production Sale The National Kiko Registry sends congratulations to Bill Carter and the other partners in the Appalachian Kikos for their success in their 5th annual production sale. Twenty-two consignors from eight states presented more than 100 lots of goats and semen straws for the 80 buyers from 12 states to bid on. The Appalachian Kikos sale is one of a growing number of production sales that offer only NKR-registered stock less confusion for the buyers and a sure guarantee of quality, professional registry service now and in the future! The high-selling doe, consigned by Bill and Cathy Collins of Weatherfield Farms, was purchased by Charles and Sherri Reece of Dean Hill Kikos for $1,100. By Marilyn Seleska SEKGA President Lance and Glenda Buckles of Buckles Farm purchased the high-selling buck for $925 from Charles and Sherri Reece of Dean Hill Kikos. Tracy Loyd (left) purchased the high-selling semen, consigned by Goat Hill Kikos. The semen portion of the sale was coordinated by Brent Ballinger (right). SEKGA expands with Fall Roundup & Sale New Zealand buck donated by Tommy & Susan McKinnon of Albany, Ga., was won by Aries Fairley of Wiggins, Miss. On November 14 & 15, the Forrest County Multipurpose Center in Hattiesburg, Miss., was a very busy place to be. This was the first Southeast Kiko Goat Association Fall Roundup and Sale. There was a lot of enthusiasm and anticipation as the crowd of people looked over the 92 animals consigned. Folks visited with friends and breeders, all bundled up, as the temperature took a plunge for the weekend. Getting expert information about raising goats was high on everyone s list, since the seminar room was full all day on Friday and Saturday morning. The attendees were given knowledge about reproductive and genetic management, parasite management and which parasites are the goat s worst enemy, and forages to plant for keeping your goats healthy. The food was excellent with homemade tortillas filled with goat meat on Friday and barbecued goat meat with all the sides on Saturday. If you missed out on these, you sure missed a treat. The school kids enjoyed the meat goat skill-a-thon, testing their knowledge with goat related questions. Joe Allen of Lucedale, Miss., won the Purebred doe, donated by Philip Wilborn of Langston, Ala., with the highest score. The drawing for the 100% The sale started at noon on Saturday and was well attended with 80 buyer numbers given out. Of those bidders, 32 people from 8 states purchased the 88 animals sold, at an average of $ % NZ averaged $ Purebred averaged $ Percentage averaged $425 The highest selling doe was consigned by Bob & Marilyn Seleska. She was a colorful 3-year-old purebred with two doelings, 2 months old, sired by SAF Spring s Merlin at her side. They sold for $1,700, purchased by Warren & Liz Barnes of Summersville, Mo. The high-selling buck was a Sports Kat son, CLP Ragin Rivers Hitman, consigned by Chris Patrick. He sold for $700 and was purchased by Granville & Mary Cheatham of Culleoka, Tenn. The high-volume purchase was shared with six lots each bought by Dewayne Smith of Leaksville, Miss., Joe Benson of Okemah, Okla., and the Greene County Cooperating Agriculturalists Club. We are blessed to have so many talented people that worked hard and made this event a success. A big Thank You to all of them. 3

Corn Country Meat Goat Conference It was a great turnout on the weekend of Oct. 3-4 at the Harrison County Fairgrounds as goat enthusiasts from across the nation gathered for the Corn Country Meat Goat Conference sponsored by the National Kiko Registry. Approximately 200 current and hope-to-be goat producers attended seminars that addressed such topics as marketing, ranch finance, record-keeping, pregnancy management and health and grazing issues. The crowd was large but there was plenty of time for one-on-one visits, socializing and educational experiences. 4 Cream of the Crop Production Sale Following the NKR conference, the Cream of the Crop consignors held their 7th annual production sale. Seventy-one potential bidders signed up for buyer numbers and 46 individuals made winning bids. Forty-four New Zealand Kiko does sold for an average price of $1,329. Fifty-five purebred does averaged $789 and five percentage does averaged $475 per head. Seven bucks averaged $1,428 per head.

All NKR clients will be mailed a registration packet for the Cumberland Meat Goat Conference & Spotlight Kiko Sale in January. Be watching your mailbox! 5

COOKING WITH GOAT MEAT Mediterranean braised goat leg with fennel and white beans By Luke Pyenson Boston Globe Fennel and goat work wonderfully together in this flavorful dish made with goat leg. The goats on the dairy farm in Italy where I worked played in the wild fennel-filled fields of the Alte Langhe in Piedmont, and, I suspect, tasted of it. Serve with crusty bread to sop up the braising liquid. 3 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 3 bulbs fennel, cut in half (reserve stalks and fronds) 1 head garlic, halved horizontally 1 leg of goat (5 pounds) Salt and pepper, to taste 1 bottle dry white wine 4 cups water 1 cup oil-cured black olives 1/2 bunch fresh oregano 5 Roma tomatoes, thinly sliced 2 cans (15 ounces each) white beans, drained Grated rind of 1 lemon (for garnish) 1. Set the oven at 325 degrees. Have on hand a flameproof casserole large enough to fit the meat and vegetables and deep enough for the liquid to almost cover the meat. 2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat 1 1/2 tablespoons of the olive oil. Add the fennel and garlic, cut sides down. Brown for 5 minutes and transfer to the casserole. 3. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil to the skillet. Sprinkle the meat on both sides with salt and pepper. Set in the pan and cook for 5 minutes without disturbing. Turn and cook the other side for 5 minutes. Transfer to the casserole. 4. Pour the wine and water over the meat (the liquids should cover it by three-quarters). Add the olives, oregano, and reserved fennel stalks. Bring the liquids to a boil. Cover and transfer to the oven. 5. Cook the goat 3 1/2 hours, turning once, or until the meat slips off when picked up with a fork. 6. Near the end of cooking, arrange the tomato slices on a rimmed baking sheet and sprinkle with salt. Roast for 30 minutes. Add the white beans to the goat and re-cover the pan. Continue cooking for 30 minutes. 7. Remove the meat from the oven and let it sit for 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped fennel fronds, lemon rind, and roasted tomatoes. Pull the meat from the bone with tongs and serve with cooking juices, beans and olives. Serves 6 Did you know...? that it costs only $5 to dual-register your Kiko goat from another registry with the NKR? If you are an NKR client and own a goat with registration papers issued by another Kiko registry, simply make copies of the front and back of the original certificate that you want to transfer to NKR. Do not send the original certificates. Fill out and sign the Certificate Transfer Application that can be found at under the FORMS tab. For more information, contact Karen at or nkr.reg@gmail.com. 6
