1 Relay for Life Rockingham County/Harrisonburg Relay Chatter A Word Happy Spring! As I write this, I m reflecting on a truly beautiful weekend. The skies were sunny and clear, and the temperatures were in the lower 70 s. I m putting in my order for a similar weekend for our Relay on May 7 8! I ve reflected, too, on some information listed on our Relay homepage. Did you know we currently have 484 participants and 61 teams registered? We have almost $62,000 and just 47 days left! Wow! Relay will be here before any of us know it! At our kick-off meeting in November, the committee announced our Relay 2010 goal: $300,000. As you can see, we have a $238,000 to go. Dividing that by the number of teams we have means each team has to raise almost $4000 more. That sounds a little intimidating, doesn t it! How can we make this easier? It s simple. We need to get more feet on the track! Do you know someone who had a team last year, but so far they have not registered? Why not give them a call and offer a friendly reminder. Have you asked everyone in your circle of influence to join your team? Why not take a minute now to send an or make a phone call to ask someone to join your team? Remember, we need MORE people to do SOME rather than SOME people to do MORE! Don t forget the two contests we have going on now, too. The first will be great for your crafty team members! Have your team make a Giant Birthday Card (see directions in the newsletter or online) inviting cancer survivors to the Survivor Reception on May 7 th. Take a photo of every card you make and display in your community. Each photo will enter you into a contest for pizza for your team at Relay! The second contest involves s. Lisa showed each of us how to use the My Participant Center portion of the website to send s. The top three senders will receive a laptop case at the next team captain meeting! Upload your address book and get those s sent out! Finally, as we gear up for the home stretch, take a look at the many fundraisers your fellow teams have planned. Support Relay and your fellow participants. We re all in this together! I look forward to seeing you at our next team captain meeting on April 20 th and at the opening ceremonies on May 7 th! ~Laura American Cancer Society Page 8 April 2010 Newsletter Editor Lisa Snider or lsnider@alumni.jmu.edu or ACS office at Inside this issue: Fund raisers 2-8 Contest 9-10 Auction/Accounting 10 Bark for Life 11-15

Canine companions represent unconditional love, joy, security, compassion, and no judgments of human abilities or appearances. Let s lick cancer. BOW and do we mean WOW!!! WOW!!! Pottstown Pa has become the leader in Bark for Life and have been awesome in helping Harrisonburg last year and this year. Here are some facts from PA Last year the Relay made $750,000 $100,000 was from Bark Events They are a community of 65,000 Networking is a big piece of the success, the community knowing what you are fighting for and feeling included are some of the behind the scenes factors that build the fundraising. But it comes from everyone doing a little and not a few doing a lot. We all need to work together on Relay and Bark! Fundraisers for Bark reach people that may not be interested in other events but will do anything with a dog Did you know One in two dogs over the age of two will get cancer, and one in four will die from it. Canine cancer research is being expanded and will help with human treatments as research continues. Ever Hear of Musical Chairs? Ever Hear of Doggie Musical Sit? Come on out to play! You will have the opportunity to experience it at the Canine Relay For Life. The last dog to sit when the music stops is the dog who is removed from the game. The fastest "sitter" is the winner! Clowns, magicians, balloon animals, food, doggie contests, Relay teams, & lots & lots of dogs will all come out to play on. Join us! People will spend $ on Dogs! 13

15 Bark Fundraising ideas From other Barks Bring your Dads and Dogs to the Father s Day Walk Saturday, June 20th! Forget Me Not Community Walk June 20th, 2009 Registration 11:00am to 11:45am Walk starts at 12 noon. $10 registration donation Ballroom dancing class is giving lessons and donating the proceeds to the Bark. "Barkroom Dancing with the Stars" [don t limit to ballroom, what about line, salsa, hip hop] Dog Bakery Hold bake sales at local pet shops, in front of grocery stores, at beaches, and park entrances anyplace that gets a lot of people and dog traffic. But this bake sale will be focused on treats for Fido dog cookies, bones, rawhide chews, and healthy dog food. He might need to go on an extra long walk after this one "Caged for Critters." Our President and Shelter Director are caged in a dog kennel at the intersection of 2 busy streets. We set up in the McDonalds parking lot there. They feed the volunteers all kinds of salads, because they figure we bring them business. The 2 people will be let loose only after we raise $10,000. We have several dignitaries from the city who spend some time with them in the kennel: the University Chancellor, the Mayor, School Principals, School Music Directors, who bring a small group from their bands or choirs to perform, etc. Other ARF members are around to run up to cars stopped at the traffic light to ask for donations. They have bags for the money made to look like animal paws. A couple of the people also dress like animals for fun. Last year we raised $5,000 and this year we hope to double that. cans of dog and cat food for need shelters and animal hospitals in need. 15

16 Bunny Trails & Puppy Tails - Bark For Life Get together with a pet store of a photographer! To really increase your fundraising turnout, name a dog "Naked" and get a local celebrity (television or radio personality, sports star, public official, etc) to "Walk Naked in the park at a designated time." Advertise the heck out of that. Make your own Dog Throw toy Here's a dog toy that's a great addition to the dog party games. It is easy to make and can even be used to throw in the park later. You'll need an old pair of nylons and a tennis ball. Then cut the top off your nylons so that you are left with just the two separate legs. Take one of the legs and push a tennis ball down into the "toe" end. Repeat the process with your remaining nylon leg to make it stronger, with two layers of stocking over the tennis ball. Tie a knot as close as you can to the tennis ball (to stop it falling out!) and tie four or five more knots along the length of the stocking, for doggie teeth to grip! Host a doggy treat hunt. Spread a bale of hay on the ground and hide treats in the hay. Let each dog find the treats (one at a time to avoid arguments over the treats!) and the dog who finds and eats his homemade dog treats the fastest wins! And when the treat hunt is over, the dogs will enjoy rolling around in the hay. Bugs on the Move o Ingredients: Milk Bones (large and small) Peanut Butter Raisins Method: Spread the milkbones liberally with the peanut butter and dot with the raisins...voila! you have 'Bugs on the Move' That takes care of the dog party treats...now what about the dog birthday cake??? 16
