1 WESTERN TRAILS KLONDIKE 2016 A MANUAL FOR GOLD SEEKERS BY DIGGER DON FEBRUARY 5-7, BEAUMONT SCOUT RESERVATION JOIN THE GOLD RUSH Register online at: HISTORY
2 The Klondike Gold Rush was a migration by an estimated 100,000 prospectors to the Klondike region of the Yukon in north-western Canada between 1896 and Gold was discovered here on August 16, 1896 and, when news reached Seattle and San Francisco the following year, it triggered a "stampede" of would-be prospectors. The journey proved too hard for many and only between 30,000 and 40,000 managed to arrive. Some became wealthy, but the majority went in vain and only around 4,000 struck gold. The Klondike Gold Rush ended in 1899 after gold was discovered in Nome, prompting an exodus from the Klondike. NOW The gold prospectors who made their way to the Yukon traveled by dog sled. They camped out in all kinds of winter weather and, therefore, needed all kinds of survival skills. We have incorporated this theme in the Western Trails Klondike Gold Rush The point of the Klondike is to reward Scouts who use their heads, put their Scouting skills to work and demonstrate teamwork and Scout Spirit WHILE HAVING FUN in the outdoors on a winter day. Klondike is a patrol event requiring Patrol Leaders to actually lead their patrols and guide team members through events and tactical decisions. ADULTS DO NOT ACCOMPANY PATROLS!! Patrols will be Dog Teams, with Scouts acting like Huskies, on separate expeditions, following a course from Alaska town to Alaska town working out solutions for situations they become involved in. Points will be awarded for correct solutions. After coming back into civilization, tired and chilled prospectors will spend their POINTS at the AUCTION and will be treated to an COBBLER SOCIAL. And, that s way better than those 1896ers had it!

5 WESTERN TRAILS DISTRICT 2016 KLONDIKE EVENT PLAN: GENERAL INFORMATION Each Dog Team with Scouts acting as Huskies is a separate expedition, following a course as shown on a map provided to the Patrol Leader. A practical problem involving Scout skills will be encountered at each stop on the map. POINTS will be awarded according to how well the patrol works out the problem. There may be more stations than can be visited. Visits to stations are on a rotation schedule Time limits at stations will be observed! Stations award different numbers of POINTS for successful solutions. Patrols may evaluate the skills of their members and may elect to choose to visit certain stops and pass others. No POINTS will be awarded for stations not completed. BE PREPARED There is no bad weather, just bad choices in CLOTHING! Klondike is an exercise in coping with weather conditions as you find them. The Scout Handbook explains what to wear and suggests layers so Scouts can adjust to cold, activity and dampness. Dress to be dry, don t be so active and covered that you sweat; remove and replace layers as needed for comfort. Waterproof boots and two layers of socks protect the feet. NO tennis or other low-cut shoes! Mittens are warmer than gloves and both should be covered by a water repellant shell. Scouts who, in the judgment of Health & Safety officers, are improperly clothed and equipped will be removed from the course. SLEDS are required! Plans for patrol-made sleds are available on line and make a great pre-klondike project. Patrols with homemade sleds will collect A BONUS OF EXTRA POINTS. Store-bought sleds may be used but will collect no bonus. PATROL EQUIPMENT will be inventoried on the course and must be on the sled through the course. Complete list bonus SCORES EXTRA POINTS!! Dragging the A-Frame is not acceptable, carrying the A-Frame is not acceptable, and boys on the support ropes cannot touch the A- Frame.
