1 2018 Klondike Derby Cornhusker Council, BSA When January 26-28, 2018 Where Camp Cornhusker TRL, DuBois, NE (south of Humboldt, NE) Participation Options The Klondike Derby steering committee wants to make every unit comfortable with the event. We have several plans to fit your needs. 1. Camp out Friday Night & Saturday Night Arrive on Friday and set up your tents, participate in the morning activity session on Saturday, attend a chapel service on Saturday evening, conclude the day with a campfire and awards presentation, stay overnight, and leave Sunday morning. 2. Camp out Friday night only Arrive on Friday and set up your tents, participate in the morning activity session on Saturday, and leave Saturday afternoon or stay and participate in the campfire and then leave that night. 3. Camp out Saturday night only Arrive on Saturday morning, participate in the afternoon activity session on Saturday, attend a chapel service on Saturday evening, conclude the day with a campfire and awards presentation, stay overnight, and leave Sunday morning. 4. Day Trip Only Arrive Saturday morning, participate in the afternoon activity session on Saturday, and leave Saturday afternoon or stay and participate in the campfire and then leave that night. We want you to come to this event, even if you can only come for the program on Saturday. Winter camping is necessary in each youth and adult s Scouting career and we encourage you to stay the weekend, but if you are unable to schedule that, please come for Saturday s program. Price Only $15.00 per person through January 23 rd, then the price goes up to $25. Registration closes January 25 th. Check-In and Check-Out Check-in will start at 4:00PM on Friday in the Orchard Room, located at the north end of the Trading Post. Check-out will be after program ends on Saturday or on Sunday morning, depending on whether your unit is spending the night on Saturday. Activity Start Times Sled checks begin at 8:15AM for morning teams and at 12:15PM for afternoon teams; please be on time. The events will start at 9:00 AM, and at 1:00 PM. Each sled team will be assigned to either the morning or afternoon activity session based on preference indicated and availability on a first-come, first-served basis. Each Scoutmaster will be notified of the start time for their troop s sled team(s) so the unit can make travel plans. Plan on a time to leave that works well and will keep Scouts from standing around and waiting to participate. Theme Klondike Games The Klondike Derby program pays tribute to the 2018 Winter Olympics with the theme Klondike Games. Come to Klondike and go for the gold! Twelve activity stations will challenge Scouts both individually and as a team. While many of the activities will be very familiar to avid fans of the winter Olympics, Scouts should Be Prepared for a local twist on the traditional sports.
2 Meals Lunch (corn dogs, mac & cheese, cookies, and drink) will be provided to all paid event participants and volunteer staff members, so everyone must pre-register. All other meals, including food and preparation, are the responsibility of the troop. What to Bring per Person Don t forget to have your up-to-date BSA Medical Part A and B forms ready for each member in attendance! It is recommended, but not required, that each sled pack one or two packets of hot chocolate or hot cider per sled team member. These items are the minimum for each sled. If you do not have these items, you can acquire some items at the station, but you will lose points. You might want to bring other items, depending on weather. Sled teams should consist of four (4) to eight (8) Scouts. Troops or patrols with nine (9) or more Scouts should split in to two (2) sled teams. Troops with fewer than four (4) Scouts are encouraged to team up with another troop. Adults Each unit will be required to provide adult leadership. In keeping with BSA policy, Two Deep Leadership is required at this event. If you are unable to provide two leaders, please contact another troop for help. Adults are encouraged to volunteer to help with the program. The Sled Teams or patrols will go out as a group. NO ADULTS WILL BE ALLOWED TO ACCOMPANY THE SLED. We want this to be a learning experience for the boys. Because of this, we will need many adults to help with directions and program stations. Staff If you have adults or youth who want to volunteer, let us know as soon as possible so we can make assignments. All staff is expected to attend the 7:30 am meeting on the day of the event. (youth staff must be 14 years old, or in the OA) We have some indoor sleeping quarters for staff, if they want to come down Friday. Contact Shea Svoboda at ssvoboda@cornhuskercouncil.org for more information or if you would like to help.
3 Klondike Shooting Sports Challenge Are your older Scouts looking for a new challenge? New this year is a special program for Venturing aged Scouts who want to test their marksmanship ability in both rifle and pistol. Participants must be at least 14 years old to participate. The rifle portion will be with Mosin-Nagant rifles shooting at 100 yards at steel targets from the prone position with 3 shots at a 12 plate and 2 shots at a 6 plate. 1 point for each hit on the 12 and 4 points for each hit on the 6, for a max of 11 points. The.22 pistol course will involve semi-automatic pistols and a Dueling Tree steel target at 30 ft. Pistol course of fire will be 10 shots at dueling tree. Person with fewest targets left on their side of the tree will win that round. Just like the regular Klondike Derby program, the Shooting Sports Challenge program will be offered twice on Saturday, once in the morning and then again in the afternoon. Participants can choose to participate either in the morning session, the afternoon session, or both. The cost to participate in the Shooting Sports Challenge is the base fee for the Klondike Derby plus an additional $5.00 per session to cover special expenses. Participants can choose to compete on a sled team during one half of the day and then compete in the Shooting Sports Challenge during the other half of the day, or to compete only in the Shooting Sports Challenge and then have the other half of their day free; the cost is the same either way. Regardless, all paid participants receive a Klondike Derby patch and lunch on Saturday. All firearms will be provided; no personal firearms allowed on camp property. Eye protection and ear protection will be available for use at no charge, but participants are welcome to bring their own if they have it. Spots are limited, so this program is only available to youth during pre-registration. If spots remain open, adults can sign up and pay to compete when they check in at camp. Safety training is required prior to participation, and it will be held in the Korff Conservation Center before each session. The shooting ranges are outside; be prepared for cold weather.
