4 Page 4 Paw Print Personals! Marshmallow Beautiful, laidback lady looking for a quiet home to spend my golden years! Come say hi at Greenhill! The Pawsitive Press Volunteer of the Month: Laurel Horton Meet Laurel- our Volunteer of the Month for November! Laurel first started volunteering at both Greenhill and 1 st Avenue Shelters in February of 2015 and has contributed almost 250 hours of service! Laurel will always go out of her way to spend quality time with the dogs at the shelters and assists with our Dog Enrichment Program trainings for fellow volunteers. She s full of energy, positivity and truly brings out the best in the dogs and humans she works with! One of Laurel s favorite parts of volunteering is training new volunteers and helping to get them excited about dog training and positive reinforcement. Laurel has learned that [she] actually really likes training people when training them to do something [she s] passionate about. Of course, Laurel also loves to work with the dogs! When asked what volunteering at Greenhill has taught her, Laurel said that every dog is different and has to be treated as an individual and that nothing is as fulfilling and heart breaking as shelter work. Well said, Laurel! In addition to her volunteer work at Greenhill, Laurel also volunteers at Bethesda Lu- theran Church where she is Council President. When she s not busy going above and beyond to help her community, Laurel enjoys reading, hiking, walking, and spending time with her three dogs and two cats. She also loves writing, and has even started her own blog! Laurel is originally from Eastern Oregon, which is her heaven on earth. Laurel has lived in Eugene for about 13 years and works for Pacific Continental Bank, where she is the ebusiness Product Manager. Laurel recently said goodbye to her oldest dog Maizy, who introduced her to her love of dog training and is the reason she volunteers at Greenhill. Foster of the Month: Molly Craig Romeo Playful and affectionate gentleman looking for an active home with people who love to cuddle! Come meet me at First Avenue! Leland Gentle and loving guy seeking someone who will groom me and give me all the chin rubs I desire! Come visit me at First Avenue! Meet our November Foster of the Month, Molly Craig! Molly became involved in fostering when she saw how great the need is for foster homes, and since July 2014, has fostered over 40 kittens for Greenhill! My favorite thing about fostering is meeting all the wonderful personalities out there just waiting to be given a chance to find their own families and live their lives. Just like there are no two people alike, there are no two cats alike, and their individuality makes life so rich for the fosterer. It always makes me smile to remember certain things about them and to know that I had an important role in saving their lives. When not caring for her cute little foster kittens, Molly also volunteers as a dog walker at the First Avenue Shelter (they sure do appreciate it!). She also enjoys exploring Oregon by going on gorgeous hikes, listening to great music on KWAX and KRVM, watching old movies from the 30s and 40s, and having good conversations with good friends. Molly said, Fostering an animal can mean saving that animal's life; it really is that simple. If an animal has no place to go, it can't be saved. It's a wonderful feeling to welcome a creature in need into your home, give it a temporary niche in which to recover, feel secure, experience and return affection and have a chance to come into its own. You become a life-giving force which, in some way, comes back to you in equal measure.

5 Volume Page 5 Holiday Safety Tips for Pets! Thanksgiving is a special holiday that brings together family and friends, but it also can carry some hazards for pets. Holiday food needs to be kept away from pets, and pet owners who travel need to either transport their pets safely or find safe accommodations for them at home. Follow these tips to keep your pets healthy and safe during the holiday. *Keep the feast on the table not under it. Eating turkey or turkey skin sometimes even a small amount can cause a life-threatening condition in pets known as pancreatitis. Fatty foods are hard for animals to digest, and many foods that are healthy for people are poisonous to pets including onions, raisins and grapes. *No pie or other desserts for your pooch. Chocolate can be harmful for pets, even though many dogs find it tempting and will sniff it out and eat it. The artificial sweetener called xylitol commonly used in gum and sugar-free baked goods also can be deadly if consumed by dogs or cats. *Yeast dough can cause problems for pets, including painful gas and potentially dangerous bloating. *Put the trash away where your pets can t find it. A turkey carcass sitting out on the carving table, or left in a trash container that is open or easily opened, could be deadly to your family pet. Dispose of turkey carcasses and bones and anything used to wrap or tie the meat, such as strings, bags and packaging in a covered, tightly secured trash bag placed in a closed trash container outdoors (or behind a closed, locked door). *Be careful with decorative plants. Don t forget that some flowers and festive plants can be toxic to pets. These include amaryllis, Baby s Breath, Sweet William, some ferns, hydrangeas and more. The ASPCA offers lists of plants that are toxic to both dogs and cats, but the safest route is simply to keep your pets away from all plants and table decorations. *Visitors can upset your pets. Some pets are shy or excitable around new people or in crowds, and Thanksgiving often means many visitors at once and higherthan-usual noise and activity levels. If you know your dog or cat is nervous when people visit your home, put him/her in another room or a crate with a favorite toy. This will reduce the emotional stress on your pet and protect your guests from possible injury. If your pet is particularly upset by houseguests, talk to your veterinarian about possible solutions to this common problem. *Watch the exits. Even if your pets are comfortable around guests, make sure you watch them closely, especially when people are entering or leaving your home. While you re welcoming hungry guests and collecting coats, a four-legged family member may make a break for it out the door and become lost. *Watch your pets around festive decorations. Special holiday displays or candles are at tractive to pets as well as people. Never leave a pet alone in an area with a lit candle; it could result in a fire. And pine cones, needles and other decorations can cause intestinal blockages or even perforate an animal s intestine if eaten. 6 Page 6 Seeta Seeta is definitely 'Daddy's little girl'! She tells me when it's bed time and is curled up next to me all night. We are so glad to have her, she is fitting into the family beautifully. She is eating fine now with her 3 remaining teeth. Loki He is doing awesome! I have another bunny from Greenhill named Abigail. Kept them apart for a little while then introduced. All went well and they interact just fine and are eating great. All is A- ok. The Pawsitive Press Luke is doing so well. He has bonded with the whole family especially our son who has autism. They bonded right away. We had Luke for only two days when my son screamed out about something. Luke went right over to him and laid his head in his lap. Luke has been so good for my son, he feeds him and takes him on walks every day. We take Luke to the dog park almost every day. He is the official greeter, greeting dogs and owners. He is such a social butterfly! She is the perfect cat. Very cuddly and we have a very special connection. Have let her outside for a very short period of time. Would like her to evolve into inside/outside cat but inside when we are gone or weather is bad. We have 7 acres and have barn cats. Juliette is making friends with them. She eats a lot of food so I'm controlling what I give her. Small amounts several times a day for now anyway. No vet check yet as we are out of the area for a free vet check but will address soon. We are very happy with the adoption - a really good fit. Cloud Johnson settled into his new home very quickly. We got him on a schedule soon so he stopped peeing in the house. Other than needing a vaccine next month, there were no issues with the vet visit - he's very healthy. He doesn't like big dogs so we go to the small dog park where he enjoys playing with other dogs. He gets along fine with everyone he's met. The youngest he's met are 5 yr. olds and he wasn't anxious at all. The adoption process was very smooth. We were in and out pretty quick. Luke Juliette (was Mittens) Cloud Johnson (was Merle)
