A Note From Our Director A New FKSPCA This season I am happy to say that we are moments away from moving into a new, safe Key West shelter. It's been a long wait, however the final touches are wrapping up and we expect to be making the move in just a few short weeks. The anticipated open date is early January so please watch our Facebook page and website for more details. Thank you to every one of you who made this a reality. While I know it's been a test of patience the reward will soon be here and our animals will have a clean, safe place to rest their heads. In the meantime, please continue to visit us at the Key West Campus located at 5230 College Rd. and in Marathon at Aviation Blvd. The animals are waiting for their home for the holidays and would love nothing more than to share them with you! With Gratitude, Tammy Fox, Executive Director Upcoming Events:

Holiday Painting Party! Theme painting parties are all the rage, and YOU contribute to the FKSPCA just by signing up! Seats are limited; get in on the Christmas fun Dec. 12!

Putts for Paws! Join our Marathon Campus as a sponsor or vendor for our Fourth Annual Putts for Paws Miniature Golf Tournament at Boondocks Grille & Draft House on Ramrod Key, February 9, As a sponsor, showcase your

business with a namesake hole on the golf course and have your logo on the big screen televisions at the restaurant in addition to enjoying a complimentary team of two in the competition. As a vendor, for a low price showcase your goods, art, jewelry, photography or craft for a great cause. All event proceeds go directly to feed, medicate and care for the homeless pets at our Marathon Campus. This is our biggest event of the year and together we've raised $18,000! Visit Marathon FKSPCA at Aviation Blvd. or call Tara at Adoptable Animals Ranging in ages from 2 years to 10, one of these amazing dogs is certain to fit your lifestyle! Angela is laid back and can keep your yard lizard-free! Mayzee is a two-year-old Cattle Dog mix who can keep up with your active lifestyle! And

sweet Sky, our senior Husky wants a pack of her own and a couch to lay on. With so many amazing dogs one of our Holiday Pups will surely warm your hearts and homes. To meet your new best friend call our Marathon Campus at "Patch" A beautiful white and black domestic shorthair, Patch was surrendered when her owners' family moved in and their dogs did not get along with Patch. Sadly, this 10-year-old kitty became homeless, at our shelter hoping another family will adopt her! Senior pets have so much love to give and make wonderful companions. Patch keeps to herself, doesn't seem to really like or dislike the other cats in the catio, and just wants a home to call her own. Meet Patch and our adoptable cats at our Marathon Campus at Aviation Blvd. Meet "Tripp" This handsome three-legged Rottweiler/Doberman is looking for his fur-ever home! Approximately 2 years old, he was found as a stray after hurricane Irma, and ultimately surrendered to us. We aren't sure why his leg was amputated, as he was found that way, but he seems resilient to the challenge. He needs a home with older children or adults and he is picky about his dog friends. He is affectionate, snuggly, goofy and loves his toys! Come by our Key West Campus to meet him today.

"Saucy" Saucy was surrendered because her original owner died and she wasn't getting along in her new temporary home. Saucy is a 3-year-old Domestic Shorthair who is energetic, playful and lovable cat that needs a home who understands her. She has a natural hunting instinct and will need a home that is willing to play with and work her. She can be cuddly and will let you know by pulling your hand if she wants you to stay by her side. Saucy would do best in a home without other cats but is a big personality to fill the house! If you think Saucy is for you, stop by to meet her in Key West today! PUPPIES AVAILABLE SOON! Say hello to Shock, 1 of 5 Shepherd mixed-breed puppies that will soon be available for adoption at our Marathon campus. Begin the New Year with a fur baby at home. Stop by and complete an application and find out what adopting a puppy entails. Meet Shock and other adoptable puppies, dogs and cats at our Marathon Campus, behind the airport at Aviation Blvd. MORE FKSPCA ANIMALS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

In Other News: Help pave the pathway to the doors of the Florida Keys SPCA Center for Animal Welfare and Education in Key West! Turn a "blank brick" into a permanent, customized memento for only $250. YES, I WANT TO MY OWN BRICK! Want to contribute to our critters' shelter needs as you shop? We

have created a separate Amazon Wish List that is solely for some of the items we need that at both the Key West and Marathon shelter locations. We are extremely grateful for your generosity this holiday season! Happy Tails: Adoption Update Teddy's Story Has a Happy Ending When we first met Teddy the Shar Pei, he was a mix of scabs, sores and plenty of warning growls. He was surrendered because he was "aggressive to people" which we believed, based on his behavior. But we suspected that behind all those threatening warnings was a very frightened dog, as is often the case. We learned through his microchip information that Teddy originally came from Virginia and was approximately 8 years old, a senior in years. We thought he may have been owned by a military family at one time and that was how he found his way to Key West. Unfortunately he couldn't tell us. Getting to know Teddy was a slow process and proved challenging since he needed medical attention. We learned he had bitten more than once when being seen by a vet, so trying to build trust while treating his bad skin and VERY badly infected ears meant one step forward, two steps back with each treatment. It took time, patience, and perseverance, but it worked. His skin began to heal, his ears improved, and his trust in us grew. We discovered that underneath all that Shar Pei bravado, there was an incredibly sweet dog who eventually came out of hiding. And as he did, we all fell in love! Teddy became a staff favorite. His wrinkly little face and tiny squinty eyes brought us daily smiles. There was just something endearing about him. Teddy loved his stuffed toys! In fact, they seemed to give him a sense of security. He would take one with him whenever he left his kennel. His preferred "companion" was his little white lamb, but his orange elephant and his green crocodile were also favorites. As time passed, Teddy became playful, affectionate and wonderful! The shelter often works with reputable breed rescues when we have specific breeds that we need to place. We had a Shar Pei contact in Florida who we had worked with successfully in the past so we contacted her. She told us about a friend in the Shar Pei network up north who also lived part-time in Key West and was currently in town. We

contacted her immediately and Laura agreed to come meet Teddy. We liked her, she liked him, and he liked her, so it was agreed that sending him back to Virginia with her would be his best option. She would foster him until a permanent home could be found. Teddy made the trip north and moved in with Laura, her husband and their other Shar Pei's. The northern climate served him well and he looked better than ever. But unfortunately, finding Teddy a forever home didn't go as smoothly as hoped. He did get adopted but it turned out that our sweet but sensitive boy had some separation anxiety. After de-constructing the doors of his new adopters' house, he was returned to Laura and spent the next several months with her. Then another family came along who fell in love with Teddy and this time, it seems to be working. In his adopters' words: "Teddy just got back from meeting the cross country team, mingled with 50 kids, and ran a couple laps around the lake with them. He's doing fantastic. He is very happy and has settled right in... we are so crazy about him, he is such a good dog!!!" (exclamation marks ALL theirs!) Sometimes it takes several tries to find the right home. And Teddy has done just that! VISIT OUR WEBSITE Florida Keys SPCA fkspca.org
