We are all so excited about the 25th Bark in the Park event this year! We have a lot of people who are return Barksters and many newbie staff and volunteers who will be unleashing their inner dog for the first time at Bark. ARHwhoooo! And just so you know - here are a few of our goals for this year: * To be a Waste-free event. We are working with Waste Free Oregon and will have 5 water stations throughout the event for people and dogs! So, bring your refillable bottle/s! We also have a recycling crew already in place that will collect and haul away all of our recycling and compost! Royal Refuse has donated use of a dumpster for garbage, which they will also remove! We will have poop bags available throughout the event so let s also make this a No Poop Left Behind event! * To raise $120,000 we are about $90,000 away! So, more fundraising pushes are needed. If you haven t had a chance to set up your participant page yet, and would like some assistance or have questions, contact Mary Cruse at mary.cr@greenhill.org, or any other staff member or volunteer who has already set up their participant page, or - just leave it set as is. There is already a written request for donations that you can or share on social media. * To have it be the smoothest, best attended, goodtime-iest Bark in the Park, yet! A reminder about your personal participant page and our team page, Shelter Superstars. All staff, volunteers and fosters are invited to join the Shelter Superstars. To do this, go to your participant page and on the right hand side, above the social media links, click on Change Team Membership. Team Leader is Sasha Elliott. You can set your own fundraising goal on your participant page and to your friends, family, etc. The page is linked to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google +, so it is easy to invite Facebook friends to contribute.
Paw Print Personals! Nikita! Sweet, female goof ball looking for the right home! I need a little bit more training, but I d love to meet you at Greenhill! Meet Nika, our Volunteer of the Month for May! Nika has been volunteering since July 2017 and has contributed almost 150 hours of service to Greenhill Humane Society. She started out cleaning kennels as a student volunteer last summer, but she realized that volunteering had more value for me than simply obtaining hours for a school project and decided to continue as a dog walker. We can always count on Nika to make us smile each week with her upbeat attitude and enthusiasm for her work, and we re so glad she decided to join our long-term volunteer program! Nika loves dogs and loves to go for walks, so her volunteer position has been a perfect fit for her! She enjoys the quality time she is able to spend with the shelter dogs and loves to meet their needs in any way she can. Volunteering with us has taught her how meaningful a few hours per week with animals can be, as she has made many canine (and human!) friends since she started last year. In particular, she says, For people struggling with mental illnesses or general stress in their lives, spending quality time with animals can be really effec- tive at bringing joy into one s life. Not only do you get your needs met, but the animals do, too. Nika is currently a high school student and has lived in Eugene for most of her life. After high school, she plans to attend a four-year college and major in architecture or marketing. In her spare time, she enjoys playing the piano, going on walks with her own rescue dog, playing video games, spending time with friends, and writing and listening to music. On top of her work with Greenhill, Nika also participates in volunteer projects as part of her school s chapter of National Honor Society. She hopes to pursue additional volunteer work with Food for Lane County this summer. Luna! Beautiful female looking for a wonderful new home where she can live out her bunny days! I m out at Greenhill if you want to come say hi! Abigail! Gorgeous and outgoing girl looking for someone to give me all the attention I crave! Come meet me at Greenhill today! Meet our Foster of the Month, Dixie! Dixie has been a kitten foster parent since 2014, and in that time she has fostered about 61 kittens, most of them bottle babies! I love furry animals, especially babies. I am a retired widow, so I have lots of time on my hands for extra fun activities. I have found this and volunteering in the cattery (at Greenhill) very rewarding. says Dixie. When Dixie isn't volunteering or caring for her foster kittens she enjoys all sorts of crafts and spending time with her three little dogs! Their names are, Cassie, Tillie and Katy Sue! When I tell friends and family about fostering they say, Oh, I could never do that. I would get too attached and want to keep them all. You do get very attached, but just stick with it and its gets much easier to give them back with blessings and they get a new forever home and there are always more waiting for a good loving start in their lives. says Dixie. It is all very rewarding and worthwhile and you get to meet many more tiny ones and Greenhill always needs more volunteers so consider fostering!
We renamed Marshall Skyler. He's doing great. He is a wonderful dog and we love him. He does great with our other dog and also my 4 year old niece. The vet said he's a healthy dog! The best thing about him is that he's a huge snuggler. The minute I get home and sit down he is my lap. I am doing great with my human friend Jenny and with my big brother Felix (a 2 year old rescue kitty from Save the Pets). My new name is Andromeda (or Meda for short). I am still very sweet and I cuddle with my human all the time. Sometimes though I like to sneak up on Felix and pounce! But he and I are getting along pretty well now and occasionally he even lets me cuddle with him on his favorite chair. I also love climbing everywhere in the apartment. Here are some pictures of me, my human, and my cat brother (I am the small black kitten and he is the orange tabby)! Also, my human says the adoption process was wonderful - the space was great, and volunteers helped answer all of her questions. She was able to take me home on the same day she met me! Best, Andromeda (and Jenny the human) Sprinkles is now Fergus and Fuzzy is Felicia. They are doing great. Eating well and no problems. We brought in a third female named Fayah and they all get along very well. They all play with my daughter and she loves them. Things are going very well. He's very good with other dogs and kids extremely good with people. He has a lot of energy. I m going to try to help him get all that out. He s put on a few pounds, and you can t see his ribs anymore. I hope he is happy. We used the wellness exam about 2 weeks ago, and he had a followup a week ago. It was good. He s a really great dog. He isn t the dog I went to the shelter for somebody got there 10 minutes before me, and that dog might not have been a good fit for me. Ripley is the perfect dog.
Both Ziggy (formerly Abra) and Nas (formerly Cadabra) are doing very well. They have settled in, eating well and seem very happy. They have new toys and are very interested in playing with them. Vet check is next week. We are so happy to have them. They are actual siblings. Lilac is now Lily. She is settling in really well in fact she is on my lap right now while I'm talking to you. My last dog was a 90lb bulldog so Lily is quite different. She gets along with my cat, they follow each other around. She's a fun dog. She's not as shaky anymore and she is a great companion. We took a road trip to San Francisco and she loved looking out the window the entire time. She's been to the vet and got one shot and we have to go back for another. I ordered her flea meds, too. She has had a few accidents in the house but I am doing my best to get her out more often and always just before we go to bed. Lily doesn't know she's little!! She does well around bigger dogs. His new name is just Mr. T. He has the run of the house which is 2700 square feet. He adjusted very quickly to the dogs too. Mr. T sleeps on the bed with me, and he also has a few of his own special spots. He has a chair near a window and 3 scratch posts too. He is an indoor cat only. I lost my other outdoor cats to a cougar so he stays indoors. I am older and my kids would take care of him if anything happens to me. Hi there! I am doing just fine. It took some time for the other two kitties to accept me. We are now getting along just fine. My mom calls me Boo. She takes good care of me. I do occasionally get into mischief. But I am so sweet and snuggly that I am quickly forgiven. All the cats in this household have their bowls on a placemat on the floor. I like to cover the bowls with the placemats after we eat. My new favorite game is in-the-door-out-the-door. I learned it quickly from the other cats. There is also a dog here but I just ignore her. I am well loved and I think I got a good gig with my new mom. Love, Boo Bear
Julie N. (cattery) - Many thanks to Julie N. for calling the foster department back when they dialed a wrong number and left her a voic intended for a foster parent! Julie, your caring and thoughtfulness is so very much appreciated! Kim H. (cattery) - Kim H. "got caught" *again*! staying over for an entire extra shift in the cattery to help a fellow volunteer out and to pitch in with laundry. We can't tell you how much we appreciate you and ALL you do! Cassidy K. (kennel) "got caught" doing so much good in the kennel at 1st Avenue! Filling out shelter picks, writing great notes in the DEP binder, helping fellow volunteers and staff and showering the dogs with love. Thank you for being a consistent presence on a high needs day in the kennel! SAVE THE DATE! Fostering an animal can mean saving that animal's life; it really is that simple. Molly C.. - Foster Parent
It makes me feel warm and happy when I can tell that the doggies I've worked with have gotten good mental and physical exercise. Julia Oldham - Volunteer Short-Term Foster Program The foster department is thrilled to announce a new program called The Short-Term Foster Program! Through the Short-Term Foster Program, we are able to send shelter dogs into foster care for 2-3 days over the shelters closed days in order to give the dogs a break from the shelter environment, learn what the dogs are like in a home environment, and promote the dogs on social media with photos and cute stories from their foster parents. If you might be interested in getting involved with this program, or to learn more, please contact Kristi or Samantha in the Foster Care Dept at ext. 114 or foster@green-hill.org. Thank you!
