1 New Orleans Lab Rescue Finding permanent adoptive homes for homeless Labs Current Events The year is coming to a close and we couldn t have accomplished all we did without our wonderful supporters and foster families. We and the dogs are truly grateful for your generosity. As of , 99 dogs have been welcomed into NOLA Lab Rescue this year. 32 of those furry faces are still living with loving foster families, going through heartworm treatment, waiting for their forever homes, or living their remaining life as a fospice dog. The requests to help the homeless are never ending. We continue to do fundraising to help cover the needs. The auction in late November was successful. We are so appreciative for the many wonderful items donated by businesses, artisans, and individuals. We hope everyone who shopped with us found the experience enjoyable and we thank you for your purchases. Currently we have a Decorate the Tree fundraiser on our Facebook page and a wish list on Amazon. We are hoping to make our foster dog s (32 of them) holiday a little bit brighter and our foster moms and dads life a little easier this year for Christmas. Sponsorship Now is also the time to become a sponsor or renew your existing sponsorship. A $200 donation will save a spot for your company logo or business ad in the quarterly newsletter. 2 Ask the Vet Holiday Safety Tips Everyone s favorite holiday season has arrived, and with it, many safety hazards for our pets. Minimizing them is an important part of enhancing our enjoyment of this wonderful time of year. Many pets are very curious about the sudden appearance of a tree in our living rooms. If you have one that likes to chew on things, options include putting the tree in an area that can t be accessed by your pet, using a gating system around the tree, or carefully choosing what goes on the tree within reach. The biggest no-nos are tinsel, garlands of any kind but especially food related ones like popcorn, glass ornaments, and metal hooks. Light strands can also be problematic when chewed (which can result in electrocution) and should be out of reach. Plants such as holly and mistletoe are poisonous to pets, and even poinsettias can cause GI upset if eaten. Candles, of course, are burn hazards and should be kept on a high shelf. Most of the post holiday cases that we see in our hospital, however, are due to the ingestion of holiday foods. Make sure that your guests don t leave plates unattended and that trash cans are tightly closed or put away. Chocolate, sugar free foods containing xylitol, grapes, and raisins are all off-limits, as are fatty or spicy foods. NO bones of ANY kind (poultry, beef, etc) should ever be given to pets. ANY bone can splinter or lodge in the GI tract, sometimes requiring surgical removal Lastly, give your pets a quiet, safe place to escape the holiday ruckus. Make sure that your guests secure any medications that they may travel with. If you live in an area that allows fireworks, ensure that your pet is put in a secure area. Many pets go missing on holiday nights due to noise phobias. In extreme cases, your veterinarian can prescribe an effective anxiety medication that will ease your pet s fears and decrease the likelihood that it will harm itself or run away. Cooking for the Humans CORN PUDDING Preheat oven to 400 degrees In a large mixing bowl add 1 can whole corn 2 cans cream corn 5 beaten eggs 1/2 cup sugar 4 Tablespoons cornstarch 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard 1 Tablespoon minced onion (optional) 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup melted butter Submitted by Nancy Porter Pour into greased 3 quart casserole dish Bake 1 hour stirring once half way thru baking.
