FEATHER CLUBS ASSOCIATION OF QUEENSLAND INC PAGE 2 THE OUTGOING PRESIDENT GIVES FINAL REPORT AT AGM It is with great pleasure that I present my report for the year 2012/2013. It has been a very busy year with plenty of activity in all areas of the fancy. We as a committee have worked very hard in putting several projects into place for the benefit of fanciers in Queensland. The constitution that was presented to you earlier, took two years to work through. The Judges & Stewards workshops have been a learning curve along with the Breeding the Breeds workshops. The compilation of a calendar with show dates and advertising does not happen by itself. There has also been four newsletters during the year. We also designed a new logo for the Association which I feel is more appropriate along with high visibility vests that are available to clubs as a sponsorship item. Two members of the management committee made the trip to Atherton on the June long weekend to meet with fanciers in their part of the world. I must say that the trip was worthwhile as things are quite different in the north and western areas of the state compared to south east Queensland. Results of the survey that we carried out support my comment. In late 2012, we agreed to endorse the optional trial of permanent leg bands for a period of three years, as put forward by the Modern Game Club. It s unfortunate that this didn t work out into something positive, as friendships have been strained and lost and the thieving of birds at shows continues. Hopefully, as we action learn, a positive I.D. System may avail itself in the not too distant future. As we continued through the latter part of the year, we made application to the gaming fund for a grant to replace the roof on the museum. Several weeks later, this grant was approved and we now have a new roof which was needed to keep the displays of memorabilia dry. On behalf of the committee, I wish to thank Bob Whitehouse for his hours of work and dedication in preserving the history of our poultry fancy. A WORD FROM OUR NEW PRESIDENT I am excited by the challenges that lay ahead for us and I am also pleased to have such a dynamic brand new committee. Before I continue with this report, I must take this opportunity to both thank and congratulate the efforts of Dennis Dowdle and his past committee for reinitiating the FCAQI and rebuilding it into what it is today. These people have managed to put the FCAQI back into the public eye as an active and positive body that is trying hard to provide a genuine service to the exhibition poultry industry. The workshops, the museum, the calendars, the newsletters and the website have gone a long way in restoring some confidence back into the FCAQI because people have seen the committee trying to do something positive. I think this is what is missing in the past and the reason why we struggled to maintain focus on that the FCAQI is all about... providing a genuine service to our members and affiliates. My past history within the exhibition poultry industry tells me that we need to take the next step and get more good people involved as I can see that we will be faced with some new and varying challenges in the future. We have ignorant residents and local councils complaining about the crowing rooster, rising costs involved with travel, feed and so on, biosecurity issues, the ageing population of our fellow hobbyists and competition from a new and changing technological world which all goes against us when it comes to attracting new and younger people into our wonderful world of exhibition poultry. In the past I have been guilty, as have many others, of not contributing enough to our controlling state body and having the mindset of what do they actually achieve for the breeders and exhibitionists apart from supply our third party insurance coverage. I am positive that I am not alone with these thoughts and I can only guess the reasoning behind this mindset. I am quietly confident that this new recharged committee has the people On the downside, when it comes to council bylaws and the keeping of poultry, we are a toothless organisation as we have no bargaining power to mediate in this area. We need to meet with local government and negotiate a favourable outcome for both parties. Another downside is the low level of registered exhibitors in Queensland. I estimate that we have about 40% of fanciers registered which raises a serious issue when it comes to biosecurity. When showing other species of animals at breed shows or agricultural shows, all exhibitors are required to be registered members of their particular breed society. In closing, I wish to thank all members of the management team for their hours of work and dedication over the past two years. We have moved a long way forward in making the Feather Clubs Association of Queensland stronger than ever before. I wish to advise that I am unavailable for nomination due to being very time poor. Yours in the fancy, Denis Dowdle. with a good blend of personalities and professional attributes to overcome these mindsets thus enabling the FCAQI to move forward and I for one an excited to work alongside them and get stuck into it. I have searched through my mind for the past month or so trying to find a solution as to how we, as a unified group can lift the FCAQI s image to even greater heights and demonstrate to the rest of the poultry community that they just cannot afford not to be an active member. There is a myriad of things I think the FCAQI can do to aid the industry and to help our fellow fanciers and their associated clubs. Our workshops are a great success and we need to develop and encourage more participation from up and coming generations. We also need to bear in mind that this volunteer committee is made up of just a few and we must not burn ourselves out in the process, so the more people we have on board to help us then so much the better. Yours truly, Wayne Ingleton

FEATHER CLUBS ASSOCIATION OF QUEENSLAND INC PAGE 4 CONSTITUTION The draft constitution that had been circulated for comment to all clubs back in June this year was submitted at a Special General Meeting for adoption. The special resolution to adopt this constitution was voted on by club delegates in attendance at the Special General Meeting. This meeting was held an hour before the AGM. The outcome of the voting was: For: 12 Against: 0 Abstained: 1 The Special Resolution was adopted and carried. We have now submitted this document to the Office of Fair Trading for approval. NORTHERN N.S.W. CLUBS A motion was put forward at our AGM, by the Australorp Club of Australia Inc, to give a number of northern N.S.W. clubs the opportunity to join the FCAQI as Ordinary Members and to advertise their shows in the 2014 calendar. These clubs are: Bangalow Poultry Club, Casino Poultry Club, Kyogle Poultry Club, Lismore Poultry Club, North Coast Game Club, Tenterfield Poultry Club and Tweed River Agricultural Society (Poultry Division). It was agreed by all at the AGM that this motion be deferred until the new constitution has been accepted by the Office of Fair Trading and implemented by us. The matter would then be further investigated. However, all clubs were asked, in writing, if they wish to affiliate or include show dates in our calendar. They were informed that they would need to abide by the same rules as Qld members. So far we have received a response from one of these clubs on the affiliation issue, which was in the negative.

ISSUE PAGE 7 Blue card required for Junior Classes An enquiry was recently made to the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian in relation to the requirement for Blue Cards to be held by committee members of poultry clubs. This is what a representative from the Commission advised:- The blue card system is restricted to individuals providing services in Queensland essential to the development and wellbeing of a child which are regulated by specific categories of employment or business under the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act 2000 (the Act). Under the category of Churches, clubs and associations involving children, an individual will require a blue card if the usual functions of their employment include, or are likely to include:- a) Providing services directed mainly towards children; or b) Conducting activities mainly involving children, and the services are provided, or the activities are conducted, by or within a church, club, association or similar entity. Volunteers must not commence regulated child-related work until they have received their positive notice. Blue cards for volunteers are valid for three years and there is no application fee. You have advised that a number of Queensland clubs have junior classes (ie under 18 years) competing in poultry shows. Based on the information that you have provided, the committee members who will have decision making responsibilities in relation to their club s junior class are required to obtain a blue card. 9 ISSUE PAGE 9 On Sunday 22 September 2013, the Feather Clubs Association of Queensland Inc staged its 2 nd Breeding the Breeds Workshop at Gympie Showgrounds, following on the success of its first workshop of this type at Rosewood early in the year. The breeds dealt with at this workshop were Indian Game, Rhode Island, Ancona and Large Modern Game, with attendees learning interesting information and insights from the knowledge and experience of the breeders presenting on these breeds. BREEDING THE BREEDS - SEPTEMBER 22, GYMPIE New FCAQ Inc President Wayne Ingleton opened the workshop and introduced each of the speakers. First speaker was renowned veteran Indian Game master breeder and exhibitor, Ron Lait. Ron started off with some breed history, explaining that the Indian Game breed was first developed in Cornwall and Devon in England around He detailed the breeds used in their makeup and explained that the double lacing was improved through many years of careful selective breeding. Ron explained that the breed was developed for its abundant breast meat and was used in the New FCAQ Inc President Wayne Ingleton The four presenters L to R: Ron Lait, David Simons, Col McCall and Andrew Reddiex. development of modern day meat chickens. The first Indian Game arrived in Australia around Ron pointed out that there are three recognised varieties: Dark, Jubilee and Blue Laced and then proceeded to go into a detailed explanation of the Standard requirements for Indian Game, both from an exhibition and breeding perspective. Ron explained the importance of type and carriage. He then went on to describe the unique head of the Indian and ideal feet and leg structure. He described the precise colour requirements, using photos of well marked specimens and live birds to illustrate his points on what is needed on each part of the body for both males and females. Ron explained that whilst double mating was not really necessary in Indians, he still double mated his Darks to get the best coloured progeny out of his matings. He emphasised that type is the number one priority when breeding, saying that body shape comes from the females, so your females in the breeding pen must be the correct Indian type. Conversely, while the male must still have the correct type, he has a major influence on the colour of the progeny. Ron pointed out that the best strategy was to have both sexes as close to the standard as possible. He added however that whilst red in the hackles was a defect in an exhibition male, this was required in the breeding pen to breed good coloured pullets. As his youngsters are growing, the good cockerels are those which show double lacing in their chicken feathers, which then moult out when they get their adult feathers. Ron stated that you should not breed from stock that are undersized. He aims to breed his large Indians early in the season, with the bantams following later on. Ron explained what he fed his growing youngsters on to get the best possible bone and body development, richness in leg colour and general condition. Andrew Reddiex, a noted Rhode Island Red exhibitor and breeder, was the second speaker of the day. Andrew outlined the history of the Rhode Island Red, stating that they were developed as a dual purpose bird in Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the US during the 1850s. The White variety followed in the late 1880s. He explained how each of the Red and White varieties were developed. Andrew, in explaining the Standard requirements, presented attendees with a photo of an object that epitomises the type of the Rhode Island a house brick! This was followed by a series of photos and drawings of high quality Rhode Islands where you could clearly see the required brick shape in their body shape. He pointed out that the side profile was important, but don t forget about the width and depth of the bird either. When viewed from above, the body should be the same width from shoulder to tail.

FEATHER CLUBS ASSOCIATION OF QUEENSLAND INC PAGE 10 BREEDING THE BREEDS - SEPTEMBER 22, GYMPIE - CONT D Ron with a Dark Indian Game Andrew then detailed the head and feet points before progressing onto the glorious plumage. He explained the required shade of rich dark intense red and where black markings were required, demonstrating this on live birds he had brought along. He pointed out that these markings were important, but were not the be all and end all in the bird you have to look at and consider the entire bird. He added that the White variety was to have pure white plumage throughout. When selecting breeders, Andrew said to chose healthy rigorous specimens that were representative of the breed. He spoke on the dominant traits of the male and female, how to mate for specific characteristics, and how to eliminate faults. Andrew gave advice on how undercolour smut could be utilised in the breeding pen to improve the black markings, although pointed out that smut should not appear in exhibition birds. Andrew then described the best growing conditions and feed for youngsters and what could be culled for at various stages of development. Andrew finished off by touching on show preparation of Rhode Islands, what to look for when judging them, and the importance of exhibitors respecting judges decisions. He emphasised the importance of being prepared to listen to differing views and experiences to gain as much knowledge as you can. David Simons then spoke on his favourite breed, the Ancona, which he has bred and shown for almost 30 years. David first gave a brief overview of the history of the breed they were first exported from Italy to the UK in 1850 and found their way to Australian shores in Early specimens were very irregular in colour and it took many decades to achieve the precise mottling. He showed some photos of winning English Anconas from the 1930s which would still win if shown today, illustrating that the breed had not substantially changed in the last 80- odd years. David explained that it should always be remembered that the Ancona is an active egg laying breed and the Standard requirements reflect this. He pointed out that the Rose Comb variety is not new, having been developed in the early 1900s and that there was even a commercial flock of rose comb Anconas in NSW during the earlier parts of the 20 th Century. David explained that there were three main aspects to consider when breeding, exhibiting and judging Anconas 1. type and carriage, 2. plumage colour, 3. headpoints these account for 75% of the entire points in the Standard. Whilst there were only 15 points allocated for type and carriage, without the correct type you do not have an Ancona, so this must take first priority. David explained the required type in an Ancona, using a particularly cooperative male bird which stood on a table whilst the various aspects of type were described. David explained the difference in type and other characteristics between an Ancona, a Leghorn and Minorca. He then detailed the type and structural faults that should not be used in the breeding pen, before progressing onto the feature that Anconas are best known for their beautiful mottling. He described the required feature colour, ie a lustrous beetle green sheen ground colour tipped with white, the more V -shaped and clearer white the better. He explained that Anconas get gayer (ie more white) with age and that their tipping will either get worse or sharper, with the latter being the ones to keep for show as cocks and hens, and more importantly for the breeding pen. He spoke on the size of the tipping and how personal preference plays a part, but that irrespective of this the clarity and evenness of tipping is what is important. David explained how darker and gayer birds could be used in the breeding pen to compensate one another. David then gave an overview on the Red variety, what to look for in exhibition birds and how to breed them, with the aim being to breed as even a shade of red (ie chestnut to red bay) as possible, with minimal black, except where this was required (eg as a black bar separating the ground colour from the white V-shaped tip). The ideal headpoints of an Ancona were then examined, highlighting the differences needed between males and females. David Continued on page 13 Andrew during his presentation

FEATHER CLUBS ASSOCIATION OF QUEENSLAND INC PAGE 13 BREEDING THE BREEDS - SEPTEMBER 22, GYMPIE - CONT D David with a well trained Ancona then spoke on the Rose Comb variety, describing the ideal form, faults to be avoided and difficulties experienced in breeding them, especially the large fowl. He showed a number of photos showing examples of good and bad rose combs on Anconas. David then distributed a handout showing six different Punnett squares to show the different breeding combinations and outcomes that were possible with single comb and rose comb Anconas (note that the same will apply to other single and rose combed breeds). He then spoke on the different head point defects and the severity and heredity of each of these, with the worst being white enamel in the face. David stressed that you should never keep or breed from a cockerel showing white in face, regardless of how good the rest of him was. David then spoke on leg colour, the difficulties in getting and maintaining it and how to try and breed for it. He gave a summary of general breeding hints and mentioned that whilst double mating is not necessary, you will find that strains will usually tend to breed either better cockerels or better pullets. In finishing, David provided attendees with advice on how best to rear young Anconas, feeding and culling throughout the growing stages. The last speaker on the day was Col McCall, of Modern Game fame, and Col gave a very informative presentation on large Modern Game, their development and breeding, accompanied by a large number of live birds to illustrate his various points. Col began with a history of Modern Game and their evolution from OEG in the mid-late 1800s, with the banning of cockfighting and the advent of poultry shows. He showed a number of drawings illustrating how they evolved; along with reference to several generations of his large Moderns after OEG blood had been introduced to improve body shape. He gave an overview of the breed s history in Australia, before progressing onto the Standard for the breed. In referring to the Standard, he gave an enlightening Col with a Large Modern Game and interesting perspective he believes that the Standards Book is a contract and that adherence to this contract is the only way that the breed can be preserved and maintained for future generations. Col said that you needed to not just focus on the Modern Game Breed Standard (or for that matter any of the other individual breed standards) in isolation, but to also read and understand the preliminary parts of the Australian Standards Book, ie the Interpretation of the Standards for Judges, Breeders and Exhibitors (including determination of merit; shape and type; feather quality; colour; size and weight; condition; faking; disqualifications, serious defects and defects etc). Col highlighted the issue of back toes of many Moderns not being on the ground, which is a structural fault and is to be avoided. He showed attendees a way to determine whether a bird was actually duckheeled or not. Col went on to what he considered to be the four cardinal features of a game fowl that were clearly visible in a Modern Game hard short feather; flat iron cone shape body; balance achieved by harmony of proportions; upright and active stance. Using a drawing of a Modern he then explained that the shank, thigh, body to neck, and neck to head all needed to be approximately the same length/ height to give the appearance of lift. Referring to further diagrams, Col explained the ideal headpoints and described the flat iron shape of the body, with the ideal back of a Modern being generally 1 ½ to 1 ¾ times the width of its shoulders. He explained the importance of colour in a Modern Game. The main faults to be guarded against in both exhibition and breeding birds was discussed by Col before he described what to look for in breeding birds and how to best mate up pens to obtain the best possible results. He provided advice on the best ways to incubate eggs and rear the youngsters, including housing and feeding. The workshop sessions were very well received by those who attended for those of you that didn t, you missed a very educational and informative day and missed the opportunity to learn from and draw on experience and knowledge of the four speakers in their respective areas of expertise. All attendees received a copy of the presenters powerpoint slides and a bag of goodies. 14 FEATHER CLUBS ASSOCIATION OF QUEENSLAND INC PAGE 14 DARLING DOWNS POULTRY & PIGEON BREEDERS ASSOC SHOW Results provided by Wayne Patterson Judges: Helen Barnes: Silkie Feature (66) Geoff Underhill: Large Softfeather (123) Geoff & Sandra Edards: shared Bantam Softfeather (279) Eddie Joyce: Large Hardfeather (45) Allan Brennan: Bantam Hardfeather (181) Linda & Terry Taylor: shared the Waterfowl (87) Barry Ross: Pigeons (78) The Weather Bureau predicted a severe storm warning for the day, and early in the week the Qld Day activities were cancelled due to these predictions of storms, so it didn t look like it was going to be a good day, weather wise. The Weather Bureau got it right, it was not the best day weather wise, BUT we made the most of it. With the popularity of Silkies increasing on the Downs we worked in conjunction with the Silkie Club of Australia and with their generous support we conducted the Qld Silkie Championship. We engaged the extra judges to take off a bit of pressure and give the judges a better chance to talk to exhibitors during the day, and make it a more relaxing day. Junior exhibitor numbers were down, but the knowledge they had about their birds really impressed. Michael Daley and Jake Wilson took out the encouragement awards for the juniors and Peter-Jye McConnell was awarded a special encouragement award for his effort. This year we attempted to have all the cards printed via the computer, other than a few technical glitches, it worked well, and should be working fully for next year. Notable classes for the day comprised of 23 large Araucana s, 35 Sebrights (21 Silver and 14 Gold), 36 Japanese and 32 Wyandotte bantams mainly the rarer colours. There seems to be a steady increase in the number of rare breeds and varieties at shows these days, some of these included Large and Bantam Malay and Aussie Game, Tasselled and Hen Feathered OEG Bantams, Hen Feathered Pit Bantams, New Hampshire Bantams, Polish Large and Bantams and Houdans to name just a few. I would like to thank the many members who work tirelessly for the benefit of the fancy and the club, with out these hard workers we would not have such a strong club.
