2018 MEAT SIRES AVAILABLE BREEDS We currently have over 2,200 rams available at our ram sales throughout the UK this year. The breeds, history and characteristics are outlined here. The Primera is a composite meat sheep, designed to provide high performance finishing lambs which excel in meat quality characteristics. The Primera breeding programme aims to utilise the best available meat sires of quality meat breeds in one package, to deliver the very best finishing characteristics to commercial farmers. Abermax composite rams, derived from the best Texel and Charollais genetics, continue to prove themselves to be exceptional Meat Sires for prime lamb production. Abermax rams are evaluated using a within flock system meaning EBVs are comparable within this population. The Abermax Carcase Index is similar to that used in the Charollais breed and aims to identify superior lamb growth and commercial carcase qualities. We make extensive use of CT scanning in our Abermax programme to help us identify genetically superior animals for carcase composition, muscle distribution and meat eating quality. The Aberblack has been developed from specific lines at the Huish and Bentley Suffolk Flocks, with extensive use of performance recording and introgression of specific traits from other breeds such as Texel and Charollais, focusing on sheep that can perform on forage diets. The Aberblack breeding programme focuses on breeding rams that produce very fast growing carcase lambs, minimising days on farm to hit premium prices. MATERNAL SIRES The Aberfield is a superior crossing sire derived from our nucleus flock, lambing outdoors and run under commercial conditions at 1,000ft. Rams are selected for maternal traits and have EBVs for lambing, ewe traits, prolificacy and maternal ability, as well as lamb growth, carcase traits and roundworm resistance. The Maternal Index identifies rams whose daughters will be profitable ewes that produce fast growing good quality lambs. The Aberfield SR has been bred as an additional option for Aberfield breeders. We have incorporated Lleyn genetics in to the Aberfield breeding programme to produce the SR. The Aberfield SR is suited to producers who would like to run a closed flock system by allowing them to produce their own replacement ewes whist maintaining ewe size and prolificacy. The Highlander joined our nucleus flock in Aberystwyth in 2014 and is now recorded in line with the Innovis system. The focus of the Highlander is to consistently deliver increased volume (kg) of lamb weaned. This is achieved by improving performance as a ewe lamb therefore maintaining a higher level of production in future. Our Abertex nucleus ewes lamb out at 1,000ft with specific selection for lambing ease and lamb vigour. Abertex sires are particularly well suited for breeding hardy, crossbred ewes that can be kept on the hill and lamb at 150%, producing quality finished lambs. Abertex rams are evaluated in Innovis own system, these EBVs are only comparable within the Innovis populations. Rams are evaluated in Innovis s own system which contains in excess of 8,000 performance records. These EBVs are only comparable within the Innovis populations. The Maternal Index identifies rams whose daughters will be profitable ewes that produce fast growing, quality lambs. The Carcase Index shows the value of the ram for producing finished lambs.

Estimated Breeding Values EBV s Calculating the EBV Performance = Genotype + Environment To calculate an estimated breeding value (EBV), we combine individual animal records along with the records of their relatives, we also take in to account non genetic influences such as age of mother and whether the animal was reared as a single or twin, as these all impact on the lamb s growth and performance. In doing so we can use the EBVs to compare the breeding potential of each animal on a level playing field. CARCASE TRAITS In the Carcase Index most emphasis is placed on EBVs for lamb growth and muscle in the carcase. Fat in the carcase may also be included in order to try and maintain fat levels rather than change them. Lambing ease and lamb survival are combined in a Lambing sub-index that is included in the overall INDEX. EWE TRAITS In the Maternal index; Lambing Ease, Lamb vigour, Lamb survival, FEC, litter size, lamb growth, ultrasonic muscle and fat depth, maternal ability (based on lamb growth to 8 weeks) without increasing ewe weight. A PROFITABLE LAMB The INDEX combines EBVs for important traits. They are combined by weighting them in relation to how much they are likely to influence profit and how heritable they are so more important traits have more influence on the index value. A positive EBV value is higher than average and a negative EBV value is lower than average. Additional traits are identified with stars the more stars the better! Rams are graded by their index in to Elite, Select or Commercial (blank) categories.

Delivering year on year improvements in our rams Using sound, objective evidence in all our breeding decisions and making this information available to our customers is central to the Innovis philosophy. We believe that the best evidence comes from recording the performance of sheep in grass based systems that challenge sheep in the same, or harsher, environments than their progeny will be expected to perform in. Our estimated breeding values (EBVs) and indexes are fine tuned to the needs of the commercial farmer, so that we consistently achieve genetic improvement in the traits that really deliver returns in our customers flocks. A number of these important traits, such as lamb survival, nematode resistance, ewe weight, ewe longevity and foot health are not widely recorded by other breeders. All our in-house genetic evaluations use tens of thousands of performance and pedigree records and the same statistical method (BLUP) that is used for the national evaluations carried out for cattle and sheep. The investment in our own systems means that we are able to react quickly to our customers needs and incorporate new innovations and research findings rapidly. The use of composite lines allows us to combine the strengths of individual breeds with the hybrid vigour that is retained over the generations, and also provides a base rich in genetic variation for us to further improve through selecting the best animals for breeding. It is the genetic selection that has been carried out within these lines over a number of years that equips them to deliver superior progeny performance for our customers.

INNOVIS RAM SALES Sale History In August, 2011 Innovis held its first ram sale at Mynydd Gorddu, near Aberystwyth. It was attended by 75 invited buyers and 130 performance recorded animals were available for sale. Now we are in our 8 th season of sales with 8 ram sales across the UK in addition to South West selection days and events for Dalehead and St Merryn. This year we have in excess of rams available for sale. Our client list has increased to over 1,300 clients and we have over 20 Ram breeding partner flocks across the UK. Despite this growth we have still rigorously culled animals that don t achieve the standards that both Innovis and our clients expect. Our nucleus flock remains one of the largest recorded flocks in the UK and one of the largest sheep breeding programmes globally. Prices Back in 2011 our Elite (A Grade) rams were priced at 800 with the standard rams at 500. We have improved our genetics considerably since then and each year as we build up more information we continue to drive the performance of the rams forward. We always try to maintain the price of the rams but the cost of continuous improvements in research and development and health have forced a small increase. The prices this year are: Maternal Rams Elite Select Commercial Teasers Aberfield, Aberfield SR, Abertex Highlander Multiplier Meat Rams Elite Select Commercial Abermax, Primera Aberblack Comparative Pricing Although our list prices often appears higher than industry averages, we can demonstrate that the cost per lamb compares very favourably when we include mating capacity and longevity in the calculation. A recent survey showed that 70% of rams lasted 4 years + and of the remaining 30% most were still 3 years old and going strong. Following is a basic calculation showing the ACTUAL cost per lamb: Sale Price Ewes covered per Ram Longevity years Lambs Cost per Lamb Produced Total kg/ram (42Kg) Please note that these calculations do not allow for the genetic benefit over the base Industry ram, which will be substantial over time. Total Kg / Purchase Price Innovis Elite Ram , p/Kg LWt Industry Crossing Sire , p/Kg LWt 0.70 cheaper 1.6p cheaper

The Ram Sale All our rams for sale are listed in the following pages for your review. Our unique sale process enables buyers to purchase rams at a fixed price when there is a single interested party. Where there are up to 3 interested buyers, there is an option for bidders to, either enter into a draw to buy the ram at the fixed price (hat), or to bid-up on the ram in 25 increments. We revert to bidding only when more than 3 buyers are interested in one animal in order to save time. We can assure you that there is never any running up of rams nor any false bidding. Terms and Conditions All rams are sold in accordance with the Innovis Terms and Conditions for supply of good and services and available on our website at Innovis will guarantee the performance of all rams sold at its official sales for the first mating season after purchase, provided that the owner can demonstrate that they have made reasonable efforts to ensure the health, welfare and security of the ram during that period. Any issues post sale must be raised prior to 1 st February 2019 and accompanied by appropriate evidence/ supporting documentation in addition to a veterinary report where applicable. In the event that a ram is found to be defective, a replacement ram of equivalent genetic potential will be supplied. A credit note for the value of the ram may be issued against the buyers next purchase if the replacement is not available. No cash refunds are given. Health Protocol Innovis understand that when selecting sheep for breeding, an important criteria is health. Therefore we have embarked on a unique program to maximize the health and biosecurity of our whole system; from the source flocks, through to grazing units and finally the rams themselves for sale. All breeding partner flocks are now part of a health screening program where barren ewes are culled through a partnership with Farm Post Mortems at designated abattoirs, and screened for the major production limiting diseases. Further strategic screening is undertaken throughout the year and tailored flock health plans ensure that all ram lambs have had a similar start to life. Ram lambs then move off to grower units, selected for their biosecurity and management systems that will allow our rams to all grow on a similar way. These farms have tailored health plans to ensure all our rams been given the same treatments and that the rams are grown on a forage based system to ensure that they last for several seasons. Finally to ensure our rams are fit for purpose, each ram undergoes a full MOT to examine its suitability for breeding. This includes a clinical examination together with palpation and visual inspection of the external genitalia. New for this year and a ground-breaking initiative for our Sheep Industry, each ram has been bled and certified as Borders Disease Negative. Rams will leave our sales having had a quarantine Startect drench as best practice and a trace element bolus.

NOTES

Keeping rams cool for successful breeding When transporting rams in hot weather Sperm production is very sensitive to the temperature of the testes. Under normal environmental conditions, rams can maintain the desired temperature in the testes for sperm production, through cooling mechanisms such as lowering the testes away from the body in hot weather. However when temperatures are higher than 32 C for longer than a two week period, especially combined with higher humidity, this can reduce ram fertility. Efforts should be taken now to keep rams as cool and comfortable as possible Provide access to cool water which will assist in keeping core body temperature as cool as possible. Provide shade under trees or in barns with good ventilation or fans. Consider keeping rams in a well ventilated barn during the day and allowing them on pastures at night when it is cooler to graze Minimise the time animals are held in strong sunlight and where possible handle animals either side of the day. Shear rams that are carrying 4 months or more of fleece. NB: Freshly shorn rams actually absorb more heat from sunlight than fleeced rams. ABERFIELD ABERFIELD SR HIGHLANDER ABERMAX Innovis Breeding Sheep ABERBLACK Inspect the rams frequently for signs of heat stress such as open-mouth breathing. Plan journeys very carefully to ensure they are as short as possible and without delays. Try to avoid transport during the hottest hours of the day. When stopping always park in the shade, and ideally with the vehicle positioned across the prevailing wind. Make sure rams have access to fresh water. Make regular stops to give rams water. Make sure rams are not packed tightly together so there is enough space for them to regulate their body temperatures Be aware that the hottest parts of the vehicle are normally the front compartments (near the cabin) and the upper decks of the vehicle.
