3 Welcome to the Virginia Veterinary Conference! It is so wonderful to see you here this weekend! The VVMA has planned a wonderful conference full of remarkable speakers. As always, we will also have an awesome exhibit hall full of great vendors. I think one of the best reasons to attend a veterinary conference is to be able to visit with colleagues/former class mates and to share ideas. We are a very small profession compared to most so sharing and learning together can be a great experience. When you combine that with needed CE credits, a wonderful hotel, the VVMA annual conference is well worth the drive to Roanoke! I hope you were able to join us at our Thursday night welcome reception. Following the reception, Drs. Randy Nett and Katie Kurkjian lead a discussion on the increasing trend in our profession for suicide. It is a sad fact that most of us in this profession know of a colleague who has committed suicide. I hope the discussion will increase our awareness, and perhaps help us develop a little understanding of this ever growing problem. If you missed this session, Dr. Nett and Trent Davis, PhD will continue the discussion on Friday at 10:05am in Buck Mountain. On a lighter note, our Friday sessions will begin with a keynote speaker, Dan Gurainick, MD who will discuss a novel way of incorporating telemedicine into what we do every day. The VVMA will then have our brief annual membership meeting where we will honor the Mentor of the Year, LVT of the year as well as the Commercial Representative award. After this brief meeting, the sessions will begin. The topics and speakers for this year s program were chosen as a result of your feedback and input from past years. We will have two simultaneous tracks in Companion Animal, one Equine, one Food Animal, and one Public Practice on Friday. We will offer the ever popular Complementary Medicine track on Saturday in addition to the other tracks. I hope while you are here, you will take the time to visit our great exhibit hall and thank the conference sponsors. Without their generosity and financial support, we would not be able to produce this meeting. Make sure you set aside time to do a little extra visiting on Friday night where you can participate in the Exhibitor Appreciation Reception as well as a silent auction sponsored by the VMCVM Alumni Society. After learning a lot and experiencing the bottom fatigue that plaques all of us who are not used to sitting down for two consecutive days, I hope to see you at the Annual Awards Banquet and Reception on Saturday night. This is a wonderful gala event that honors and celebrates the outstanding achievements of your colleagues as well as friends of the veterinary profession. Please visit the registration desk to purchase banquet tickets. All in all, I hope the 2016 VVMA conference will be one that you and your colleagues will remember, so much that you join us again 2017! Most Importantly... Have a GREAT TIME! Margaret J. Rucker, DVM Margaret (Peg) J. Rucker, DVM VVMA President-Elect and Conference Chair Online speaker proceedings are available at
