1 2012 Thurston County Fair August 1st 5th, 2012 Dog Project Exhibitor's Guide Welcome and congratulations on choosing to participate in this year's Thurston County Fair! With Daisy the Dog as the fair mascot, this year will be an especially exciting year in the dog barn! We look forward to a pawsitively fun and enjoyable event. For five days (Aug 1st 5th, 2012), we exhibit our dog skills in showmanship, obedience, dog bowl, posters, demonstrations, herdsmanship, judging contests and record books, and relax with fun events like the costume contest, obstacle course, groom squad, and evening activities. Fair is an important part of the 4-H experience because it allows members to see how much they have progressed throughout the year. It also gives them the chance to exhibit their skills and share the values of 4-H with others. Members who qualify at the County Fair are eligible to show at the State Fair in September. Representing our county at State Fair (The Puyallup Fair) is a great honor and one that all members strive for. Primaries, as non-competitive members, are ineligible for State Fair. Important Information REQUIRED: Vet check and exhibitor check in. ALL exhibiting dogs are REQUIRED to be vet checked on July 31 st from 4-8 pm, at the fairgrounds in the dog barn. Please bring your WA State Rabies Vaccination Certificate ( and your dog(s) clean and free of fleas, lice, mites, etc. This is a stop by vet check (first come, first served). All exhibitors planning on staying to decorate should provide a ride home for their dog or an adequate, shaded place to keep their dog during decorating. REQUIRED: Medical/Health (3 pgs), Emergency Veterinary Treatment & Fair Code of Conduct forms (see attached) are due at time of vet check. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PRINTING AND BRINGING YOUR OWN COMPLETED FORMS. Dogs on Fairgrounds. Dogs must enter and exit fairgrounds by the Lake Access Gate ONLY. A pass for your dog will be issued at vet check. Dogs must remain within the designated areas at all times throughout the fair. Benching Hours. Benching hours are from 10 am to 10 pm. Club leaders will be responsible for informing you of your time required for benching your dog. See your leader for details. Volunteer Center. Parents wanted! Jobs are easy and shifts are short. prior experience required! Check it out at the superintendent s desk. Entering a Record Book? Don t forget to sign up for your Exhibitmanship shift. Sign up in the Benocheck Building, beginning July 27th, when you turn in your record book. Doing a Public Presentation? Don t forget to sign up for a time slot. Presentations will be held at the 4- H/Benoscheck Building Thurs (10am-2pm), Fri (12pm 5pm) and Sat (10am-4pm). Costume Contest. Judging for the Costume Contest will take place on the following categories: Movie, Fair Theme (Pawsitively Fun at the Thurston County Fair!), Sports and Miscellaneous. Sign up at the superintendent s desk.

2 New This Year Perro Pals. Yup, that s Spanish for Dog Pals! It s like secret buddies, but will be played throughout fair, with members throughout the dog barn. Participation optional. See flyer attached for more information. K-9 se Work Demonstration and Workshop. Canine Co-Op trainers and students will join us on Friday from 4pm-6pm, then again on Sunday from 1pm-3pm to demonstrate K-9 se Work, the newest performance event to hit the dog world! Workshops for all interested members will follow their demonstration. All exhibiting dogs are invited, but advance sign-up is required. Don t miss this exciting opportunity! Learn more about K-9 se Work at Graduating Senior BBQ. Wednesday evening, the dog project will gather for a BBQ to recognize this year s graduating seniors, Kami Owens, Taylor Wilson and Emily Jodway. See your club leader for details. Graduating Senior Showcase. A new tradition in the dog barn! Check out the displays, highlighting the 4H experiences of our Graduating Seniors. These displays will then begin our NEW Dog Project Senior Showcase Scrapbook. Awards Flat ribbons will be awarded in all classes. The Danish System will be used. Thurston County Dog Project rosettes are given to the 1 st and 2 nd place blue ribbon winners in each class. SPECIAL AWARDS WILL FURTHER BE GIVEN FOR: Thurston County Fair Overall High Point: All members who compete in the following events are eligible: Showmanship, Obedience, Judging, Dog Bowl, Presentations, Educational Displays, Herdsmanship and Record Books. Only scores from Fair are eligible. One award will be given for each of the following age divisions: JR/INT/SR. Showmanship Grand Champion: Awarded to the top exhibitor per the judge s discretion. One award will be given for each of the following age divisions: JR/INT/SR. Obedience High in Trial: Highest Obedience score at each trial, in each standard age division (JR, INT, SR). Rally High in Trial: Highest Rally score at each trial, in each standard age division (JR, INT, SR). Agility Grand Champion: Highest combined agility scores in each standard age division (JR, INT, SR). Dog Bowl Awards: 1 st through 4 th chair, JR/INT/SR levels will receive an award. Dog Judging Contest: 1 st through 8 th place, JR/INT/SR levels will receive a medal. Merit Awards: Merit awards may be given at the discretion of the judge, leaders or superintendent. Members Award: An award voted on by the members to recognize a member who has done an exceptional job at Fair. State Fair Qualifying Award: Members chosen for the State Fair team (Obedience/Showmanship, and/or Agility/Showmanship) will be awarded a qualifying rosette. Dog Barn Herdsmanship Award: Several times each day, clubs will be judged on their herdsmanship. The club with the highest score will have their name added to the Thurston County Dog Herdsmanship Plaque which is displayed at fair each year.

3 Qualifying For State (Puyallup) Fair Qualification for the State Team is based on the state-mandated qualification rules. Participation in the Thurston County Fair is required in order to be eligible to qualify for State. Members may qualify in one or multiple events, as specified below: Obedience: Participants shall be selected for the team based on their performance in showmanship and obedience at county qualifying events. Members having received blues in both showmanship and obedience will be taken first, then blue in showmanship and red in obedience and finally red in showmanship and blue in obedience, until the county quota of 20 has been filled. Members who qualify, yet don t fit into the given allocation will be considered alternates. Although members may receive qualifying scores at a qualifying event other than fair, participation at fair is required in order to be eligible for the state team. Agility: Participants shall be selected for the team based on their performance in showmanship and agility at county qualifying events. Members having received blues in both showmanship and both agility classes will be taken first, then blue in showmanship and blue/red in agility classes, then blue in showmanship and red/red in agility classes and finally red in showmanship and blue(s) in agility, until the quota (of 12) has been filled. Members who qualify, yet don t fit into the given allocation will be considered alternates. Judging: Members in the intermediate and senior age divisions who have received a blue in judging will qualify for the State Judging Team. Dog Bowl: Members in the intermediate and senior age divisions who have been awarded 1 st 4 th chair will qualify for the Intermediate and Senior Dog Bowl Teams. An additional member will be selected as an alternate. Educational Posters and Public Presentations: Blue-ribbon exhibits will be eligible to be entered at State Fair. 4-H Dog Project s Ground Rules for Youth and Adults Breaking any of the following rules may result in your dismissal from a show or fair and forfeiture of all awards. Also, any gross abuse of these rules may cause the removal of a 4-H member from the 4-H program. 1. alcoholic beverages. 2. drugs. 3. smoking or tobacco products. 4. abuse of dogs. 5. coaching of youth while they are in the ring or showing their dogs. 6. Adults may not groom or school a show dog while on the grounds. Designated adults may help members with the project. 7. The ring is off limits to everyone except working show personnel. 8. Approach the judge for information only, not to dispute a placing, and only after judging is complete. 9. Show personnel may dismiss a visibly ill dog from participation. 10. All exhibitors must participate in Herdsmanship, if offered. 11. Leaders will ask a member of their club to leave the show grounds with her or his dog if behavior is unacceptable. 12. Only dogs entered in novice or higher classes may be off leash at any time and these only in the show ring or practice ring. 13. eating or drinking in the benching area. 14. Prong, spike, head collars and muzzles are not allowed on show grounds. 15. Dogs may be shown with minor, non-contagious ailments. However, this is a show management decision and a veterinarian's certificate may be required. 16. DRESS CODE: 4-H participants, (defined as; 4-H members, Leaders, and Parents or other adults), must dress tastefully and conservatively. Sandals may be worn with stockings. Bare feet and exposed midriffs are not allowed. All shirts must have at least 3 finger width straps at the shoulders. Low-cut necklines or sexually provocative clothing will not be permitted. Mesh or see through (sheer) clothing is not allowed. Underwear may not be exposed. Clothing that advertises alcohol, drugs, tobacco, gang affiliation, sexually explicit messages or obscenities will not be allowed. Skirt lengths will not exceed 2 inches above the top of the knee. All clothing and shoes must be clean and in good repair. 4-H participates may not participate in any 4-H activity unless they acknowledge and comply with the above dress code. If, in the opinion of the activity or event officials, a participant does not comply, the participant shall be given one opportunity to correct the problem. If participant fails to correct the problem, they will be asked to leave the activity or event and all awards and premiums shall be forfeited. 17. Running or rowdy behavior is not allowed.

4 Protests When an individual is assisting with a 4-H show, no one should interrupt or interfere in any manner. If someone does not agree with what is being done, comments may be made in writing, to the superintendent. A judge's decision, representing his or her individual preference, cannot be protested unless it is alleged to violate the rules. Each protest must be lodged, in writing, by at least two exhibitors and an adult. Each exhibitor must be from a different club. The protest must be filed with the appropriate show superintendent within twelve hours of the time of the cause and the protest. All protests must be accompanied by a $50.00 fee which is refundable only if the protest is upheld. The protest will be acted upon by a committee selected by the fair manager. The committee decision will be final. parent, guardian, or adult may approach the judge at any time during the show to make a complaint. Members may, at the appropriate time, speak with the judge, if the judge is willing, about the reasons for their placement. complaints may be made to the judge. Clubs may have their own rules in addition to the following: 1. eating or gum chewing in the benching area. Herdsmanship Rules 2. Each dog must have suitable benching equipment, to include: -A benching chain made of chain or plastic covered cable, which is short enough to prevent the dog from falling off the bench (approximately the length between the dog s withers and croup). -A buckle or non-choking collar or a harness. choke collars are allowed on the bench. 3. There must be one member present at all times for each six dogs. 4. There must be one adult from each club present within the dog area (may include the family area or bleachers). 5. one except 4-H members on Herdsmanship duty may be in the benching area. Brief entry of exhibitors, leaders, or parents may be allowed only if needed. 6. Each dog must be identified by a Fair-issued exhibitor s card. 7. Any adult acting as the supervising adult, designated by the club, or temporarily filling in for members on herdsmanship must have a current background check on file with the 4H Extension office. Judging Considerations Herdsmanship judging shall be based upon the following considerations: 1. Exhibitors will be judged on their personal cleanliness and neatness. They will also be judged on their friendliness and courtesy to the public, show personnel, and each other. Exhibitors should not block the public s view of the dogs if at all possible. 4-H members on duty should be attentive and ready to answer questions. 2. Herdsmanship judges will check to see that dogs are benched with the proper equipment. Dogs should look comfortable and under control. They should not be barking on the bench. Dogs may be watered on the bench, but water must be promptly removed. 3. Benches should be neat and clean. Any equipment not in use should be put away. Exhibitors are required to keep their benching area and the area immediately in front of it clean at all times. 4. Clubs should have a banner for identification. Decorations should be neat and tasteful and should not interfere with the public s view of the dogs. Decorations chosen should not endanger dogs or people in any way. 5. Each club should have some type of educational exhibit. This may include posters, displays, etc. These may be items members have entered as individual educational material displayed. 6. Club tent areas must be well kept. Garbage should be picked up. Dogs in tents (when needed) must be on leash or in a crate. One crate should be available in each tent for emergencies. Club tents should have some type of identification.

5 Thurston County 4-H Fair Exhibitor Code of Conduct As a Thurston County 4-H fair exhibitor, you have the responsibility of representing 4-H in a positive light to the public. Therefore, you are expected to conduct yourself in a matter that respects individual rights, safety, property of others, and reflects favorably on yourself, club, county, and state. Please read and sign that you understand and accept the following guidelines: I will do my own 4-H project work to the best of my ability, including handling and fitting my own animal in preparation for show. I will display proper respect and behavior. I will be a positive role model and a team player. I realize that I am responsible for demonstrating good character as an example to others. I will treat other members projects with the same respect and care that I give my own. I understand that displays of un-sportsmanlike conduct, roughhousing, and insubordination are prohibited. I will use appropriate language and refrain from swearing and/or using obscene and discriminatory language. I will not use alcohol, drugs, or any controlled substance (other than medicine prescribed to me). I understand that youth exhibitors may NOT use tobacco products. Before that start of fair, my parent/guardian will report to my 4-H Leader information regarding the required use of prescription drugs by me and what to do in case of a medical emergency. I understand that overly affectionate displays of attention are not appropriate at fair between 4-H youth, other fair exhibitors, and/or nonexhibitors. I will respect the rights, privacy, and property of others. I realize that I am responsible for the proper care and humane treatment of my 4-H project animal(s). I will not bring a sick or unsound animal to a 4-H fair event. I will not endanger my animal(s), other exhibitors animals, or put others at risk by bringing a dangerous and/or unpredictable animal to fair. I will do the herdsmanship duty required of me and feed/water my animal(s) each morning prior to the opening of the fair to the public. I will not use or allow to be used any abusive, fraudulent, or illegal practices in the feeding, care, showing, or exhibiting of my 4-H project(s). I realize that I am expected to present a clean, neat appearance at all times. I will wear appropriate attire including shoes or boots at all times. Consequences for infractions may include: (Parent/guardian will be notified if penalties are necessary.) Withholding premiums and/or sending a member or 4-H project exhibit home from the fair. Assessing the member the cost of damages and repairs in the event of damage or destruction of property. Member placed on probation from involvement in future 4-H events and/or termination of 4-H membership. Any infraction of county or state law will result in notification to the appropriate authorities.
