1 Junior Fair Dog Rules-2017 PRE-FAIR SHOW: Saturday, July 15, 10:00 am, Medina Kennel Club Classes: Novice, Open, and Showmanship INTERVIEW YOU & YOUR DOG: Thursday, July 20, 5:00 pm, MFG Pavilion FAIR WEEK SHOW: Monday, July 31, 6:00 pm, Medina County Fairgrounds Show Arena (Building #30) Classes: Rally, Best Handler and Awards Arrive with your dog 5:00-5:30 pm and only use GATE 4. IMPORTANT: Enter dogs ONLY through Gate #4 off Smith Road. Dog s Gate Pass is included with your book order. Permission to Participate and License and Health Requirements 1. In order to show and/or participate in any county dog training activities: The Ohio State Fair Dog Project Identification Form and Vaccination Certificate (Medina County) Form completed and signed by a licensed, accredited veterinarian is required for exhibition. o Veterinarians must also provide their name/address stamp used in their practice in the space provided. These certificates must include the name, breed, and age of dog. The Vaccination Certificate is due to the EXTENSION OFFICE no later than 5:00 pm, JUNE 1. o Note: When June 1 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the deadline moves to 5:00 pm on the next business day (i.e. Monday). Other certificates of vaccination, computerized vaccination records, pet record cards, or kennel records will not be accepted for show participation but can be used for training activities before June 1. It is the exhibitor's responsibility to make sure that all vaccination requirements for State Fair are met. ALL dogs must have current Rabies vaccinations, administered by licensed, accredited veterinarians. Veterinarians must document on the Vaccination Certificate whether the exhibitor s dog s Rabies vaccination is current for 1 year or 3 years by filling in the date expires blank. ALL dogs must be vaccinated for Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus by licensed, accredited veterinarians. If the veterinarian does not administer certain vaccinations, those vaccinations must be noted by the administering veterinarian, either on the Vaccination Form or letterhead. o All vaccinations must be current through August 3, Each Dog Exhibitor must complete and sign along with a parent/legal guardian the 4-H Dog Projects and Activities Form to participate in the Medina County 4-H Dog Program. This completed form is also due to the Extension Office by 5:00 pm, June Proof of current Vaccination Certificate must be shown before exhibitor is allowed into training class. Proof can be receipts from the veterinarian, computer printout or other forms but this is not the official required form. Members are to turn in the official Vaccination Certificate as soon as possible. 4. ALL dogs participating in Medina County must be currently licensed in the exhibitor s county of residence. Exhibitors must show current Certificate of License. The Dog License Tag alone is not sufficient. o This includes Assistance/Service Dogs; the assistance dog organization i.e.: Pilot Dogs, Inc. will provide the appropriate document for the exhibitor to obtain a license for his/her dog. 5. A dog, which appears to be in season, will not be permitted at Fun Matches or the County Fair. 6. Pregnant and/or lactating (nursing) dogs are not permitted on the Fairgrounds, and may not be shown. Project Eligibility 1. Exhibitors must be enrolled in the correct 4-H/FFA Dog Project to participate. For all... Obedience and/or Rally Classes, exhibitors must be enrolled in project 210O-Obedience. Showmanship Classes, exhibitors must be enrolled in project 210S-Showmanship. Dog Care Classes, exhibitors must be enrolled in project 201D-You and Your Dog. Agility Classes, exhibitors must be enrolled in project 201P-Performance. Assistance Dog, exhibitors must be enrolled in project 201W-Working Dogs. Achievement Program, exhibitors must be enrolled in project 201A. A web-based state project. 2. Exhibitors can be enrolled in any 4-H/FFA Dog Project to participate in the Poster Contest competition. 3. Any exhibitor, regardless of 4-H/FFA Dog Project, can participate in the Dog Skillathon. 4. FFA members are eligible to show provided they meet school FFA Dog Project requirements.

Exhibitors may show 1 project dog in 1 level of obedience, other project dogs in different levels of obedience; the same or different project dog in Showmanship; the same or different project dog in Drill Team, Brace, Team and Rally, depending on the number of project dogs owned and handled by the youth, provided they meet those classes eligibility requirements. o Exceptions: Assistance Dogs must be 6 months old by the day of the show and are eligible to show in one Beginning Obedience Class that meets the exhibitors experience eligibility. You and Your Dog Youth may show the same dog or a different dog in any other disciplines/classes provided they meet the eligibility requirements. 6. All dogs exhibited at the Medina County Fair, County Fun Matches, and the Ohio State Fair must have been born on or before January 30 of the current year to be used as a project dog for the current year. 7. Dogs participating in the Medina County Fun Matches or County Fair Dog Show must either be owned by the Jr. Fair exhibitor or the exhibitor s immediate family. Dog must be housed on the exhibitor s premises and in their continual care no later than April 1 of current year. This includes dogs that are leased. Immediate family is defined as the Jr. Fair Exhibitor s father, mother, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, grandfather or grandmother, including the corresponding step and half relations, or by a member of the exhibitor s household. Continual care is defined as the Jr. Fair exhibitor being responsible for and involved in the feeding, cleaning, and care of the project animal. 8. Hardship cases are defined as dogs that replace the exhibitor s original project dog after the county s project enrollment deadline. Exhibitor must contact a Dog Committee member to discuss their hardship case. No changes may be made after June 1. Hardship cases will not be considered for State Fair participation. 9. Returning 4-H members may not enroll in this project after 5:00 pm, April 15. Late enrolling, First-Year 4-H members may enroll in a dog project between April 15 and May 1. o These exhibitors are allowed to show 1 dog in 1 Fair Class. 10. Leased dogs are permitted for MEDINA COUNTY FAIR participation only. Leased dogs MAY NOT SHOW AT STATE FAIR. 11. Lessons, instruction and advice for the exhibitor are encouraged. As long as the exhibitor is present in the learning situation, and handles or trains the dog the majority of the time present, such assistance can include occasional handling or training by another person. Only the exhibitor can train the dog at any type of Training Class on or after April No one other than the Junior Fair Exhibitor is permitted to show the project dog at any type of Dog Show, including Fun Matches, on or after April Before showing at the Medina County Fair, Dog Matches or State Fair Competition, the dog and handler must attend a MINIMUM OF THREE (3) Dog Committee training sessions or be observed and approved by a Dog Committee Member. Please contact Lorna Webb if participants cannot attend Monday s practices before April Only domestic dogs are permitted to be shown. Wolf and wolf hybrids are not permitted. 15. Participation in Dog Skillathon is required for all dog projects. 16. All Dog Project Record Books must be turned in at the Dog Skillathon on July 13 OR no later than July 20 to be reviewed by the Dog Committee. 17. Review General Regulations for Junior Livestock Exhibitors. Safety and Sportsmanship 1. A Parent/Legal Guardian must accompany and stay within the Activity Area while the exhibitor is handling their dog. 2. Exhibitors are totally responsible for their dog(s) while on the Fairgrounds. Dogs must be kept on a leash while on the Fairgrounds, except when participating in the ring during judging. Dogs must be kenneled in designated areas. Exhibitors are expected to clean up after their dog(s). Dogs are not permitted outside the Show Ring Area and Kennel Area. Dogs must not be left unattended. 3. Any dog exhibiting unsafe or threatening behavior will be removed from the Fairgrounds. 4. Dogs are not permitted to wear any type of muzzle, prong collars, or electric collars while on the Fairgrounds. 5. Any dog not under its handler s control will be excused from competition. 6. Only the exhibitor s dog, exhibitor, and Show Officials are permitted in the Show Ring Area at any time throughout the show.

3 7. The Judge or Show Officials may dismiss from the ring any dog exhibiting unsafe or threatening behavior or any exhibitor abusing the dog. Any dog exhibiting any type of aggression towards humans will be unable to participate in any dog project activities, including practices, fun matches, clinics, or the Dog Show. o Exhibitors are encouraged to complete the project using alternative evaluation methods. The judge will excuse any dog that appears dangerous to other dogs. o This may result in disqualification of exhibitor and/or removal of dog and/or exhibitor from the Fairgrounds. 8. Any exhibitor or other person(s) abusing or neglecting a dog will be removed from the Fairgrounds. 9. Any handler who willfully interferes with another competitor or that competitor s dog will be excused from competition. 10. The 4-H/FFA/FCCLA Professionals and Show Officials (Show Committee) in charge will have the right and responsibility to order the removal from the grounds any person verbally or physically abusive to Show Personnel. 11. A dog leaving the ring or relieving itself in the ring will not be excused from the class, but deductions may be made at the Judge s discretion. 12. Mistakes or corrections found on Judging Sheets must be reported to Show Committee within 15 minutes from the time the Score Sheets are presented. No changes in placing or awards will be allowed after the 15 minute time limit. 13. Participants exhibiting unsportsmanlike conduct will have points deducted from that category on their Score Sheets and/or disqualified and removed from the show area. Show Equipment/Handler s & Dog s Appearance 1. Handler s appearance: Exhibitors should appear in dress that shows a neat and clean appearance. Clothing should be worn that is comfortable to handle in and appropriate for Dog Shows. Clothing should not distract, limit or hinder the Judge s view of the dog. Inappropriate clothing includes T-shirts, jackets or other apparel with words, blue jeans, shorts, sandals or other open-toed shoes, clogs, high heels or other similar footwear. Exhibitors dressed inappropriately will not be allowed in the Show Ring. For Showmanship Classes it is recommended that girls wear skirts, skorts or dresses that are in good taste. Boys should wear dress shirts, ties and dress slacks. For Obedience, Rally and You and Your Dog Classes colored dress jeans, dress shorts, skirts, skorts and dresses in good taste, closed-toed shoes, including athletic shoes are appropriate. 2. Dog s appearance: Dog must be clean, well brushed and in good physical condition for their age. The coat must be free from mats and loose hair. Ears must be clean and free from hair in the ear canal. Toenails should be trimmed to appropriate length. Purebred dogs do not have to be in regulation show clips. Any dog whose hair surrounding the eyes, ears, or beard that interferes with it performance may have its hair tied back with elastic bands or small plain barrettes. Ribbons and/or bows are not permitted. 3. Obedience collars include well-fitting plain buckle or quick release collars, lupine or slip collars of an appropriate single length of leather, fabric or chain with 2 rings (1 on each end). Fancy collars, harnesses, studded collars, pinch collars, collars with prongs or spikes on inside or outside, electronic collars, or any other special training collars, or collars that are either too tight or so large that they hang down unreasonably in front of the dog are not permitted. Nothing shall be hanging from the collars. Leashes may be of fabric or leather and should be 6 feet in length for Pre-Novice Classes. o For Novice, Graduate Novice, Open, and Graduate Open Classes, the leash need be only of sufficient length to provide adequate slack in the heel on leash exercise. o Chain leashes are not acceptable. 4. Showmanship collars include a chain or fabric slip collar, or martingale-type show lead. Nothing shall be hanging from the collars. Leashes may be of fabric or leather and long enough to allow for easy handling of the dog. Chain leashes are not acceptable. 5. Exhibitors must provide their own dog collar, leash, water dish, kennel and any equipment needed.

4 6. Dumbbells must be made of one or more solid pieces of one of the heavy hardwoods, or of a rigid or semi-rigid, firm, nontoxic, non-wooden material, similar in size, shape, and weight to a wooden dumbbell. Metal dumbbells are not permitted. Dumbbells shall not be hollowed out. They shall have no decorations or attachments, but may bear an inconspicuous mark for identification. The size of the dumbbell shall be proportionate to the size of the dog. 7. Food, treats or toys are not permitted in the Show Ring Areas during Obedience/Rally Classes. Bait is allowed in the Showmanship Ring. Handlers may take dogs out of Show Area to give rewards, bathroom break, etc. Class Ties 1. Ties will be broken as follows: When 2 or more exhibitors have the same overall scores... Beginner Novice, Pre-Novice & Novice Obedience: The scores in the first exercise will be compared. o The exhibitor with the highest score in the first exercise will receive the highest placing, and so forth. If all exhibitors have the same score in the first exercise, the scores in the second exercise will be compared, and so forth until ties are broken. If the scores are equal throughout all of the exercises, including the Exhibitor s Appearance, Dog s Appearance, and Sportsmanship, ties will be broken by the exhibitors and their dogs performing a heeling pattern specified by the Judge. Graduate Novice & Above Levels of Obedience: Ties will be broken by the exhibitors and their dogs performing an exercise specified by the Judge. Showmanship: The scores in the Handling Exercise will be compared. o The exhibitor with the highest score in the Handling Exercise will receive the highest placing, and so forth. If all exhibitors have the same score in the Handling Exercise, the scores in the Interview section will be compared, followed by the scores in the Handler Appearance & Attitude section, and the scores in the Grooming section until ties are broken. If the scores are equal throughout all of the exercises, with Grooming being the last section compared, ties will be broken by the exhibitors and their dogs performing a Handling Exercise as specified by the Judge. You and Your Dog: The scores in the Interview section will be compared. o The exhibitor with the highest Interview score will receive the highest placing, and so forth. If all exhibitors have the same Interview score, the scores in the Exhibit section will be compared, followed by the scores in the Dog s Appearance and Manners section, then the scores in the Dog Project & Record Book section, and followed by the Member s Appearance and Attitude section until ties are broken. If the scores are equal throughout all of the Evaluation Areas, those tied will be asked additional Interview questions until the ties are broken. State Fair Registration/Participation 1. Any youth enrolled in a 4-H/FFA Dog Project may enter the Ohio State Fair Dog Show, including Dog Poster Contest. The exhibitor s 4-H advisor/ffa instructor and Extension professional must approve all entries. 2. General Entries: Youth must enter their dog(s) by completing a Ohio State Fair Dog Show Entry Form, available online at You must mail entries and payment directly to the Ohio State Fair Entry Department, 717 E. 17th Ave., Columbus OH Entry fees are per dog per class entered. All entry fees must accompany the official State Fair Dog Show Entry Form. All entries must bear a postage stamp and have a legible cancellation date. o Metered entries will NOT be accepted. Credit card payment is available. The entry deadline is June 20. o Entries postmarked after June 20 will be charged a $50.00 late fee. 3. Poster Contest: Each youth must complete an Ohio State Fair Dog Show Poster Entry Form and send or bring the completed Entry Form along with poster to the OSF Dog Poster Contest, Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, 2201 Fred Taylor Drive, Columbus OH There are no entry fees for posters. Posters must be postmarked by July 1. Posters postmarked after the deadline will be displayed, but not judged.

5 4. The Ohio State Fair Entry Department will mail 1 admission ticket and 1 parking permit to each exhibitor. Admission tickets for additional days showing and dog walk passes will be provided at registration. Exhibitor letters and other pertinent information will be posted online at 5. Neither the exhibitor nor the dog has had any prior experience in Showmanship, AKC Jr. Handling or like experiences or a champion title before April 1 of current year. Exhibitor and/or dog may only show in this class once. Junior Showmanship B is for the exhibitor or dog who has shown in Junior Showmanship A or has had prior experience in Showmanship, AKC Jr. Handling or like experiences, or a champion title before April 1 of current year. The exhibitor must meet the age requirements of 8 (and in 3 rd grade)-11 years of age as of January 1 of current year. The exhibitor who wins first place in this class at the Ohio State Fair can return to this class with the same dog every year provided age requirements are met. Intermediate Showmanship A is for the exhibitor years old as of January 1 of current year. Neither the exhibitor nor the dog has had any prior experience in Showmanship, AKC Jr. Handling or like experiences or a champion title before April 1 of current year. Once an exhibitor and dog show in this class, he/she must move to Intermediate Showmanship B provided he/she is still within the age requirements. Exhibitor and/or dog may only show in this class once. Intermediate Showmanship B is for the exhibitor or dog who has shown in Intermediate Showmanship A or has had prior experience in showmanship, AKC Jr. Handling or like experiences, or a champion title before April 1 of current year. The exhibitor who wins first place in this class at the Ohio State Fair can return to this class with the same dog every year provided age requirements are met. Senior Showmanship A is for the exhibitor years old as of January 1 of current year. Neither the exhibitor nor the dog has had any prior experience in Showmanship, AKC Jr. Handling or like experiences or a champion title before April 1 of current year. Exhibitor and/or dog may only show in this class once. Senior Showmanship B is for the exhibitor or dog who has shown in Senior Showmanship A or has had prior experience in Showmanship, AKC Jr. Handling or like experiences, or a champion title before April 1 of current year. The exhibitor must meet the age requirements of as of January 1 of current year. The exhibitor who wins first place in this class at the Ohio State Fair can return to this class with the same dog every year provided he/she meets the age requirements. Obedience: Beginner Novice A & B: All exercises performed on leash. Exercises include: heeling pattern; figure 8; sit for exam; sit stay, recall. o Beginner Novice A is for the first-year member and first-year dog with no prior show experience. Exhibitor is not permitted to show the same or different dog in any other Obedience Class. This is like any other A Class and can never be repeated by youth or dog. Exhibitor may show one project dog in Beginner Novice A. o Beginner Novice B and Pre-Novice (Exhibitor may show 1 project dog in Beginner Novice B OR Pre-Novice, decided upon according to skill level and preference. Exhibitor cannot show in both Beginner Novice B and Pre-Novice in the same year. A dog cannot show in both Beginner Novice B and Pre-Novice in the same year. Exhibitors may show the same dog in other Non-Obedience Classes and/or a different dog in other classes provided they meet the class eligibility requirements. Exhibitors may not show the same dog in another Obedience Class the same year.

6 Novice A & B (All Ages): Exercises include: heel on leash; figure 8; stand for exam; heal free; recall; long sit; long down. Novice A neither exhibitor nor dog has had any prior experience at the Novice level before April 1. o Once an exhibitor shows in this class, they must move to Novice B at the very minimum. o Once a dog has shown in this class, the dog must be shown at the Novice B level at the very minimum. Novice B for the exhibitor or dog that has shown in Novice A or has had experience at the Novice level prior to April 1. They have not yet progressed to Graduate Novice A level or higher. o Exhibitors can show in Novice B any number of years unless winning first place at the Medina County Fair or the Ohio State Fair. They then must move to Graduate Novice A or higher with that same dog. If an exhibitor and/or dog places in Graduate Novice B at the Ohio State Fair, he/she can repeat this class at the State level provided the county requirements have been met, and the dog is not performing at the Open level or higher. o Dogs shown in this class cannot show in any lower level of Dog Obedience at the Ohio State Fair. Graduate Novice A & B (All Ages): Exercises include: heel on leash; figure 8 off leash, drop on recall, dumbbell recall, recall over high jump, recall over broad jump, long down. Graduate Novice A neither exhibitor nor dog has had any prior experience at the Graduate Novice level before April 1. o Once an exhibitor shows in this class, he/she must move to Graduate Novice B at the very minimum. o Once a dog has been shown in this class, the dog must be shown at the Graduate Novice B level at the very minimum. Graduate Novice B for the exhibitor or dog that has shown in Graduate Novice A or has had experience at the Graduate Novice level before April 1. They have not yet progressed to Open A level or higher. o Exhibitors can show in Graduate Novice B any number of years unless winning first place at the Medina County Fair. They then must move to Open A or higher with that same dog. o An exhibitor and/or dog placing in Graduate Novice at the Ohio State Fair can repeat this class at the state level provided the county requirements have been met, and the dog is not performing at the Open level or higher. o Dogs shown in this class cannot show in any lower levels of Dog Obedience. Open A & B (All Ages): All exercises performed off leash. Exercises include: heel free; figure 8, drop on recall, retrieve on flat, retrieve over high jump, broad jump, long sit, long down. Open A neither exhibitor nor dog has had any prior experience at the Open level before April 1 o Once an exhibitor shows in this class, he/she must move to Open B at the very minimum. o Once a dog has been shown in this class, the dog must be shown at the Open B level at the very minimum. Open B for exhibitor or dog that has shown in Open A or has had experience at the Open level prior to April 1. They have not yet progressed to the Graduate Open level or higher. o Exhibitors can show in Open B any number of years unless winning first place at the Medina County Fair. They then must move to Graduate Open A or higher with that same dog. An exhibitor and/or dog placing in Open B at the Ohio State Fair can repeat this class at the State level provided the county requirements have been met, and the dog is not performing at the Graduate Open level or higher. Dogs shown in this class cannot show in any lower levels of Dog Obedience at the Ohio State Fair. Rally Obedience: Rally signs can be downloaded at the AKC website or under resources at Rally Novice A Exhibitor and/or dog with no prior experience showing at any Rally level before April 1. Rally Novice B Exhibitor and/or dog who has had prior experience showing at the Rally Novice level before April 1. They have not yet progressed to the Rally Advanced A level or higher. o Once winning this class, the exhibitor and/or dog must move to Rally Advanced A at the very minimum the NEXT project year. Rally Advanced A Exhibitor and/or dog who has not had prior experience showing at the Rally Advanced level before April 1 Rally Advanced B Exhibitor and/or dog who has had prior experience showing at the Rally Advanced level before April 1. Once winning this class, the exhibitor and/or dog must move to Rally Excellent A at the very minimum the NEXT project year.

7 You and Your Dog: Youth showing in You and Your Dog, must be enrolled in project 201D. Youth may show the same dog or a different dog in any other disciplines/classes provided they meet those eligibility requirements. Exercises in all You and Your Dog Classes include: (1) Member s Interview (Questions asked from 201R Dog Resource Book.); (2) Member s Record Book 2017 must be used. Older Project Record Books will not be accepted. Exhibitor must complete pages 24-36, including photographs. The animal records section may NOT be photocopied for the You and Your Dog project dog. This is the only section that will be evaluated for this judging. DO NOT separate this section from your 4-H Dog Project & Record Book and put it in sheet protectors or 3-ring binders. Bring entire book to judging; (3) Member s Appearance and Attitude; (4) Dog s Appearance and Manners; (5) Exhibit o You and Your Dog, Junior for exhibitors 8 (and in 3 rd grade)-11 years old as of January 1, enrolled in You and Your Dog. The trophy winner of this class may repeat this class every year of age eligibility. o You and Your Dog, Intermediate for exhibitors years old as of January 1, enrolled in You and Your Dog. The trophy winner of this class may repeat this class every year of age eligibility. o You and Your Dog, Senior for exhibitors years old as of January 1, enrolled in You and Your Dog. The trophy winner of this class may repeat this class every year of age eligibility. County Poster Option for Project Completion for 201 O & 201S if you are not showing your dog at the Pre-Fair Judging or County Fair: Poster should be 22 x 28, no foam board please.
