4 4-H Communication The El Paso County 4-H Newsletter is usually sent out monthly or bi-monthly via . Be sure to contact the Colorado State University Extension Office if you are not receiving newsletters. The newsletter is also posted on the Colorado State University Extension El Paso County website at The El Paso County 4-H Small Animal Advisory Committee typically meets monthly at 6:30 PM on the last Thursday of the month. Meeting locations are announced in the 4-H Newsletter. 5 To consider when enrolling in a 4-H Small Animal Project Market Small Animal must be owned by the El Paso County 4-H member. Llama and cat project animals may be leased (more details on page 14, #3). Primary Care of 4-H Animal Projects - 4-H members will provide the primary and continuous care of their project animals from project beginning to completion (ownership period). Primary care means there may be rare circumstances when the youth may not be able to provide the necessary care for the animal at a particular time, as in illness, short vacations, etc. On such occasions, another individual may be called upon to provide secondary care. Members are required to complete the animal care and housing document. (see Colorado State 4-H Policies) Cloverbuds age 4-H youth (4-H age 5-7) are not permitted to show or exhibit any animals. Be aware that youth members showing Small Animals have clothing and equipment requirements. Be sure to inquire with your 4-H project leader and refer to your 4-H project manual. Health Certificates - See page 6 for more details. Animal Information in 4HOnline - All 4-H project animal information is required to be uploaded into 4HOnline and/or FairEntry. (see page 7 for more info). El Paso County 4-H Fair exhibitors are expected to have an up-to-date record book which may be requested for review prior to the County Fair. (see page 14 for more info.) What is Showmanship? In the 4-H Youth Development Program, showmanship is a required educational activity for each species of animal shown in 4-H classes at community fairs, county fairs, State 4-H Fair qualifying events, youth shows, and the State 4-H Fair. Showmanship is a required part of each 4-H member's annual experience. Showmanship (aka Fitting and Showing) is the art of training, grooming, and showing an animal to make the animal more presentable in competitive exhibitions. Judging of a showmanship contest is based on preparation of the animals for show, their apparent training, and the appearance and behavior of the participating 4-H members. 4-H members should be prepared to answer questions from the Judge about their project animals. 4-H members can prepare for questions by learning about animal parts, animal feeding, and animal science topics such as diseases. The 4-H project manual is a good resource to prepare for questions. Showmanship is not a conformation class. A Showmanship Judge only considers conformation to the extent that it may affect the way an animal should be fitted and shown. Basic skills in both grooming and showing should not be confused with current fads and trends. The showmanship Judge should make placings according to the degree of excellence displayed in carrying out fitting and showing practices. Exhibitors should refer to their project manual in preparing for showmanship contests. Exhibitors should also become familiar with fitting rules in the show premium so all animals will be groomed and exhibited in a manner consistent with the show rules. Iowa State University Extension Members exhibit their animals in showmanship classes based on the 4-H age of the youth member: (4-H age is based on member age as of Dec. 31st of the current 4-H year) * Novice - 1 st year members. * Junior Showmanship is for members who s 4-H age is 8-10 years. * Intermediate Showmanship is for members who s 4-H age is years. * Senior Showmanship is for members who s 4-H age is years El Paso County 4-H Small Animal Projects Page 5

6 El Paso County 4-H Meat Quality Assurance (MQA) REQUIREMENT: MQA is required for youth enrolled in Market and Breeding 4-H animal projects (Beef, Dairy, Swine, Sheep, Goats, Rabbit, and Poultry Project Members) 1. All first year members are required to attend meat quality assurance (MQA) training. 2. All project members moving into a new 4-H age division are required to attend meat quality assurance (MQA) training. Juniors (8-10) moving to intermediate (11-13) Intermediates (11-13) moving to seniors (14+) El Paso County MQA training opportunities are typically offered twice a year. Watch the 4-H Newsletter for MQA training details. Please Note: Members needing MQA training must attend at least 45 days prior to the El Paso County Fair. Those members who do not meet the MQA training requirement will not be eligible to show at the El Paso County Fair or State Fair. Health Certificate Requirements for Small Animals Cavy - No required health paperwork. Animals must be healthy and free of illness/disease. Sick animals will be sent home. Poultry - Due to avian surveillance procedures, poultry will be vet checked as they arrive at El Paso County Fairgrounds. Rabbit - No required health paperwork. Animals must be healthy and free of illness/disease. Sick animals will be sent home. Cat - No required health paperwork. Animals must be healthy and free of illness/disease. Sick animals will be sent home. Llama/Alpaca - Must have official Health Certificate issued within 30 days prior to stalling El Paso County 4-H Small Animal Projects Page 6

7 4HOnline Animal Project Upload Instructions All 4-H members are required to upload their project animal information in 4HOnline. This is a new process for Small Animal project members that will aid in preparing for county fair entries. Please note the deadline dates to enter project information into the system. Please complete the required fields. It is helpful if you can upload a picture of your animal along with the Brand Inspection Papers and/or Bill of Sale if applicable. Animal project due in 4HOnline by May 15 th (current 4-H year@ midnight) Market Animals are required to upload: El Paso County (EPC) Tag # or Tattoo, Animal s Birthdate, and weight from mandatory weigh-in (if applicable, otherwise enter 0.00 for weight). 12 Small Animal Project Record Book A Record Book is required to earn project completion. All e-records, required supplemental pages, project manuals, and tip sheets are located on the State 4-H Website at: Just scroll down until you see the Small Animal Record Books and click on the appropriate record book according to 4-H age: Senior, Intermediate, or Junior. Helpful Tips: Keep all your records! Take photographs throughout the year of your Small Animal project. You will need a minimum of 4 project related photographs for your record book. Photographs should show project progress (such as project beginning, middle, and end). Photographs need to be more than fair photographs. Please do not include photographs from school or other non-4-h project activities. Track your costs and save ALL receipts (food, vet bills, supplies of any kind). Keep a record of dates and costs for all Small Animal events you attend (classes, shows, community service, etc.). Keep track of mileage, you will need to record this as an expense. Save a food nutrition label from the feed bag, you will need this information for your record book (you can usually print this from the internet if you forget). Complete all pages and questions. If a question doesn t apply to you, then indicate N/A or follow the directions on the record book page (example: if you are in the breeding project but you did not breed your animals this year, write did not breed on your breeding records). Date things appropriately! (If it was supposed to be signed or filled in at the beginning of the project year then don t date it at the end of the year!) Check your math, because we will! You only need one record book for all your small animal companion projects and one livestock record book for Breeding and Market Poultry and Rabbit. If you have more than one species in the project they will ALL be included in the ONE book. Fill in ALL spaces if you do not know the answer then write unknown or if it doesn t apply, write N/A or follow the instructions on the record book page, in some cases it is also acceptable to estimate. BUT NEVER LEAVE AN ANSWER BLANK!!! Enter all information in date order. HAVE FUN WITH YOUR PROJECT!!!! Do not procrastinate too much or you will get stressed to complete this book at the last minute and it won t be fun. Goals - It is important to write goals each year. Goals help you learn more about your project and your life. It is also important to think of how you will accomplish your goals. Goals may be personal or project related. Answer the questions about each of your projects and goals. Use complete sentences when asked. Equipment/Supplies Inventory - Record equipment, tools, trailers, fencing, and any other items used for your project this year. Record things that you own and things that you borrow. Remember to include items you have listed in Other Expense Record. Record all animals in Animal Inventory, Animal Purchase Record or Breeding Supplement as appropriate. Add more lines/pages as needed. Start this list at the beginning of the 4-H year and add to it anything you use for your project. Animal Inventory - At the start of your project, record all the animals you own in START Animal Inventory. If you sell an animal or one dies, record "sold or died" in the third column for that animal. Any animals El Paso County 4-H Small Animal Projects Page 12

13 you buy should be recorded in Animal Purchase and NOT in START Animal Inventory. Remember to record any animals you sell as Income. At the end of your project, record all the animals you still have in END Animal Inventory. Do not leave this blank. Record "no animals owned" where applicable. Required Supplements - The following projects require a supplement page: Buck Rabbits, Doe Rabbits, Rabbit Litters, & Poultry Egg Production. Supplement pages can be found at project_resources/erecords/. Animal Purchase Record - Record the animals that you purchase during this 4-H year. Record the cost of the animal under the correct project column and under total cost. Remember to label the project columns and record if an animal died. If you own an animal at the beginning of the 4-H year, it should be listed in START Animal Inventory and NOT in Animal Purchase Record. Record "no animals purchased" if you did not buy any animals for your project(s) this year. Health Record - Enrolling in an animal project requires you to take responsibility for the health of your animal. Record all health care for your animal(s). Health care can be medicine (shots, dewormer, pills) or management (fly prevention, nail/hoof trimming, shearing, clipping, cleaning pens, feed tubs, and water tanks, etc.) Also include supplements and medicated feeds (check the feed tag). Remember to record the cost of health care services and supplies in Health Expense Record. Do not leave any blanks. Record N/A where applicable. Feed Expense Record - Record all feed you buy for your animal(s) this 4-H year such as grain, hay, supplements, medicated feeds, and water. Record the amount (include units) and cost. Record pasture if you pay to rent it. If animal is boarded, calculate feed costs separately from board cost. Record board cost in Other Expense Record. Other Expense Record - Record all costs for non-feed and non-health items such as show supplies, equipment, tack, stall or barn rent, tagging, clinics/lessons, shows, brand inspections, gas for car or truck, farm utilities (except water), etc. Record "no expenses" if there were none this 4-H year. Income Record - Record any money you earned this year. Income may be from selling animals, equipment, or tack, or from show winnings, barn work, etc. If you still own your project animal(s) at the end of the 4-H year, record that animal(s) in END Animal Inventory and NOT in Income Record. Record "no income" below if you did not receive any money this year. Financial Summary - Record the totals from other pages to see if you made or lost money on your Small Animal project this year. Market Animal Performance - This page is ONLY for Market Animal projects (Beef, Goat, Sheep, & Swine). Record N/A in the Project box if you are not in one of these market projects. Did these animals make weight at your county fair? Choose ONE PROJECT to complete your Market Animal Performance on. Involvement Records - 4-H Members must complete a community service activity and a demonstration in order to complete their project. The 4-H program also provides additional opportunities for leadership, exhibition, and judging. Record your involvement in these areas which may be within or outside of 4-H. Record "none" or N/A where it applies. Project Pictures - Include a minimum of four pictures each with a descriptive caption. Include pictures that demonstrate the progress of your project. Additional photos may be added. 4-H Story - Tell us about your 4-H experience in a story. The following may be used as a guide to help you in compose a story related to your project(s). 14 4-H SMALL ANIMAL SHOW PREMIUM El Paso County Fair Contest Requirements Small Animal Committee Chair: April Roof Revised 05/22/18 Subject to Change 4-H youth club members in good standing who are properly enrolled in the El Paso County 4-H Youth Development Program via 4HOnline, who have paid membership fees in full, and who have met the Meat Quality Assurance (MQA) training requirements if applicable are eligible to exhibit in the 4-H Small Animal Departments at the El Paso County Fair. Please review the rules and guidelines below to help prepare for and submit entries to exhibit at the El Paso County Fair. Invite to FFA Members: Any FFA member wishing to exhibit under the 4-H Small Animal Departments at the El Paso County Fair will follow the 4-H entry and exhibit process. FFA exhibitors/instructors are asked to contact the Colorado State University Extension El Paso County Office to inquire about participation requirements and the online Fair Entry process. Colorado State University Extension El Paso County Office main phone line: (719) El Paso County Fair 4-H Small Animal Show Dates and Times TBA General Rules 1. All exhibits/animals must pre-entered into the online FairEntry system. FairEntry system opening and entry deadline details will be announced in the El Paso County 4-H Newsletter. Fair fee payments - Make checks payable to: El Paso County Extension and deliver or send to: Colorado State University Extension, 17 North Spruce Street, Colorado Springs, CO Payment must be at the Colorado State University Extension Office by 5:00 PM on the entry deadline. NOTE: NO LATE ENTRIES ACCEPTED! Any exhibitor who misses the entry deadline due to extenuating circumstances must notify the Colorado State University Extension El Paso County Office immediately. The exhibitor will then be required to formally request in writing an entry deadline exception. Requests are subject to review by the Colorado State University Extension Office and are not guaranteed to be approved. Late fees may be accessed for entries received after the deadline. The fees will be $5.00 per animal or $25.00, whichever is greater. Example: 1-5 animals $25.00, 6 animals $30.00, 7 animals $35.00 etc. 2. The Small Animal record books will be judged at the club and county level. Members are encouraged to complete their record books after the fair and turn them into their project leader for feedback and ways to improve. Members failing to submit a finished record book will not be credited with a completed project and will be unable to take the same project again for one year. All animals exhibited must be in the member s record book. Project leaders should turn in all graded record books into the Extension Office by the second Monday in September. 3. Animals exhibited must be owned, or in the case of llama/alpacas or cats, leased through a 4-H sanctioned lease program, by El Paso County 4-H youth members. All youth must have completed the Animal Care and Housing Form for Colorado 4-H Livestock Projects and Code of Show Ring Ethics. Poultry and Rabbit members must also complete the USDA Meat Quality Assurance Agreement Form. All forms must be on file at the Extension Office. 4. All 4-H youth members must show their project animal in the showmanship contest. However extenuating circumstances may be addressed to the 4-H Small Animal Advisory Committee and Extension Agent as soon as possible. 5. Cloverbuds will not be allowed to show or exhibit any animals. 6. Only registered El Paso County 4-H youth members (no adult) will be permitted to groom or provide any kind of care to the animals once the animals have entered the Fairgrounds except in the interest of the safety of the child and the well-being of the animal. Violations of this rule will be handled as follows: First violation verbal warning; second violation written warning; third violation dismissal from the Fairgrounds. Exceptions can be made for Llamas with the prior approval of superintendent. 7. All Judges decisions are final. 8. Where appropriate, premiums will be awarded to first, second and third place participants. First place will be award El Paso County 4-H Small Animal Projects Page 14

15 ed $5.00, second place will be awarded $3.00, and third place will be awarded $2.00. Market animals do not qualify for premiums. 9. Fair treatment concerns must be filed in writing on the Fair Treatment Challenge Form with the Colorado State University Extension 4-H staff person on duty at the fairgrounds accompanied with a fee of $50 in cash (no checks) within 24 hours of the incident. Challenges can only be submitted by youth exhibitors. Please see the Fair Treatment Protocol attached to the Fair Treatment Challenge Form for further information and procedures. 10. Any violation of the following rules will automatically result in disqualification with no recourse: a) the natural hair color of the animal cannot be altered using any artificial coloring. Any animal when rubbed with a cloth or glove, which shows evidence of artificial color, will be disqualified. (b) Any entries adding artificial hair or hair-like substances will be disqualified (c) The showing of animals of an ineligible age or showing unethically fitted animals is prohibited. (d) Unethical fitting will be deemed to consist of any method, which alters the natural conformation of any part of the animal s body. 11. The showing of animals of any ineligible age or showing unethically fitted animals is prohibited. Unethical fitting will be deemed to consist of any method which alters the natural conformation of any part of the animal s body, any animal having been operated upon or tampered with, for the purpose of concealing faults or with the intent to deceive will be disqualified and dismissed from the grounds. No administration of behavior-modifying drugs of any type, including alcohol, to any animals on the fairgrounds will be permitted under any circumstances. Violators of this rule will be disqualified and dismissed from the fairgrounds. An animal judged to be unsafe by Superintendents and Extension Office Representative may be dismissed from the fairgrounds. 12. If, in the opinion of the 4-H Small Animal Superintendent and the 4-H Youth Development Agent, an exhibitor does not take proper care of his/her animal(s) and assigned cage (if applicable) and area, after proper warning, the exhibitor may be dismissed from the fairgrounds. Additionally, if any exhibitor or their families mistreat animals, the exhibitor may be dismissed from the fairgrounds. Violations of this rule will be handled as follows: First violation verbal warning; second violation written warning; third violation dismissal from the fairgrounds. 13. Any behavior that is considered negative on the part of the exhibitor, family members of the exhibitor, or leaders, directed toward any show official, 4-H staff, 4-H exhibitor or outside exhibitor (such as FFA) or their parents will result in disqualification and awards forfeited. 14. Any exhibitor dismissed from the fairgrounds will forfeit all premiums. 15. Use of alcoholic beverages or drugs by 4-H youth members will NOT be tolerated on either the fairgrounds or in the 4-H youth camping area. 16. Appropriate attire for showing and in market sale pictures will be required at the discretion of the superintendents. 17. Each exhibitor is required to clean up after their own animals. For cavy, cat, and pocket pets, this would mean cleaning up any excrement or mess that your animal makes while in the fairgrounds. For poultry and rabbits, llama/alpaca, this means that cages/stalls must be cleaned daily by 9:00 AM. Evening feedings must be completed prior to barn closing. Each exhibitor or club must provide his or her own bedding material. 18. The respective superintendents or their assistants will assign cage space within the barns. The species superintendents will post cage assignments by the Opening Saturday of fair, in the respective barn areas. Any exhibitor not abiding by the cage assignment may be barred from competition. 19. Health Requirements: All animals must be free of contagious or infectious diseases and in good condition. Animals that appear malnourished or unthrifty may be excused from the premises. All owners of market animals will be required to sign a disclaimer stating that animals have not been given any medications, tranquilizers, and/or injectable vitamins according to label recommendations before weigh-in at fair. If medication is required on any animal before or during the fair where exhibition of the animal will take place prior to the medications labeled withdrawal time, the Superintendent of that division, and 4-H staff must be contacted before medication is administered and provided with written documentation by a licensed Veterinarian. Administering medications approved by the FDA for human use but not for veterinary applications is ground for disqualifications. All animals may be examined on arrival for evidence of infections or contagious disease, and if such is found, they will be held in quarantine until examined by a El Paso County 4-H Small Animal Projects Page 15

16 veterinarian. The exhibitor is responsible for calling a practicing veterinarian for animal treatments. The Superintendent has the right to call for services of a veterinarian for the treatment of sick animals if the exhibitor is not available. The exhibitor must pay for the fee for veterinary services prior to the release of the animal from the fairgrounds. If drugs are administered, the 4-H Small Animal Advisory Committee, 4-H staff on duty, and official fair veterinarian must be notified. 20. ATTENTION - United States Department of Agriculture Wholesome Meat Act The use of drugs in any manner other than in accord with the approved labeling is a violation of federal law. The United Stated Department of Agriculture Wholesome Meat Act applies to the sale of market livestock sold during the El Paso County Fair as follows: a. Animals must be in good health and carcasses free of drug or chemical residues. b. Antibiotics and sulfonamides have required withdrawal periods. c. Drug label directions for use and withdrawal periods must be followed. d. If drug or other chemical residues are found in tissues of carcasses, the entire carcass may be condemned. e. If drug or other chemical residues are found in tissue of carcasses of animals sold through sale or sales connected with the El Paso County Fair, said fair will in no way be liable or responsible for conditions of carcass or sale price of animal. Exhibitor forfeits all rights to the sale price. Before administering antibiotics and/or sulfonamides, consult a licensed practicing veterinarian, or label directions of the drug. Wholesome Meat Assurance Statement Attention: The use by a non-veterinarian* of animal drugs or other substances in any manner other than in accord with the labeling approved by FDA is a violation of federal law. *Note: Abuse of the extra-label privilege by veterinarians is unethical and is subject to serious consequences such as license revocation. Any food animal must not exceed FDA/EPA/USDA established tolerances for any identifiable or unidentifiable foreign substance including drugs, pesticides, feed additives, or other chemicals. Violative results of residue testing are subject to investigation by USDA and FDA for prosecution. Any misrepresentation of a food animal that can potentially affect the acceptability of the carcass or milk will be considered fraud. Results of residue testing are subject to criminal investigation by USDA and FDA for prosecution. "Certificate of Disclosure": Exhibitors, parents and club leaders of all market and breeding animals must certify their compliance with the USDA Wholesome Meat Act by completing and signing a "Certification and Disclosure Statement" when enrolling in 4-H. The Certificate will be available to members in the fall with enrollment materials. Exhibitors may not stall breeding animals or weigh-in market animals without this completed form on file in the 4-H office. IAFE National Code of Show Ring Ethics Exhibitors of animals at livestock events shall at all times deport themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship. Their conduct in the competitive environment shall always reflect the highest standards of honor and dignity to promote the advancement of agricultural education. This code applies to junior as well as open class exhibitors who compete in structured classes of competition. This code applies to all livestock offered in any event at a livestock show. In addition to the IAFE National Code of Show Ring Ethics, fairs and livestock show may have rules and regulations, which they impose on the local, county, state, provincial, and national levels. All youth leaders working with junior exhibitors are under an affirmative responsibility to do more than avoid improper conduct or questionable acts. Their moral values must be so certain and positive that those younger and more pliable will be influenced by their fine examples. Owners, exhibitors, fitters, trainers, and absolutely responsible persons who violate the code of ethics will forfeit premiums, awards, and action proceeds, and shall be prohibited from future exhibition in accordance with the rules adopted by the respective fairs and livestock shows. Exhibitors who violate this code of ethics demean the integrity of all livestock exhibitors and should be prohibited from competition at all livestock shows in the United States and Canada El Paso County 4-H Small Animal Projects Page 16

17 The following is a list of guidelines for all exhibitors and all livestock in competitive events. 1. Misrepresentation of ownership, age, or any facts relating to your animal is prohibited. 2. Owners, exhibitors, fitters, trainers, or absolutely responsible persons shall provide animal health certificates from licensed veterinarians upon request by fair or livestock show officials. 3. Exhibitors are expected to care for and groom their animals while at the fairs or livestock shows. 4. Animals shall be presented to show events where they will enter the food chain free of violative drug residues. The act of entering an animal in livestock show is the giving of consent by the owner, exhibitors, fitters, trainers, and/or absolutely responsible person for show management to obtain any specimens of urine, saliva, blood, or other substances from the animal to be used in testing. Animals not entered in events, which culminates with the animal entering the food chain, shall not be administered drugs other than in accordance with federal, state, and provincial statutes, regulations, and rules. If the laboratory report on the chemical analysis of saliva, urine, blood, or other sample taken from livestock indicates the presence of forbidden drugs or medications, this shall be prima facie evidence such substance has been administered to the animal either internally or externally. It is presumed that the sample of saliva, urine, blood, or other sample tested by the approved laboratory to which it is sent is the one taken from the animal in question, its integrity is preserved and all procedures of said collection and preservation, transfer to the laboratory pertains to the sample taken from the animal in question and correctly reflects the condition of the animal at the time the sample was taken, with burden of the owner, exhibitors, fitters, trainers, or absolutely responsible person to prove otherwise at any hearing in regard to the matter conducted by the fair or livestock show premises, all treatment involving the use of drugs, and/or medications shall be administered by a licensed veterinarian. 5. Any surgical procedures or injection of any foreign substances or drug or the external application of any substance (irritant, counterirritant or similar substance) which could affect the animal s performance or alter its natural contour, conformation, or appearance, except external applications of substances to the hoofs or horns of animals which affect appearance only and except for surgical procedures performed by a duly licensed veterinarian for the sole purpose of protecting the health of the animal, is prohibited. 6. The use of showing and/or handling practices or devices such as striking animals to cause swelling, using electrical contrivance, or other similar practices are not acceptable and are prohibited. 7. Direct criticism or interference with the Judge, fair or livestock show management, other exhibitors, breed representatives, or show officials before, during, or after the competitive event is prohibited. In the furtherance of their official duty, all Judges, fair and livestock show management, or other show officials shall be treated with courtesy, cooperation and respect and no person shall direct abusive or threatening conduct toward them. 8. No owner, exhibitors, fitters, trainers, or absolutely responsible person shall conspire with another person or persons by affirmative action or inaction to violate this code of ethics. Violation of this rule shall subject such individual to disciplinary action. 9. This application of this code of ethics provides for absolute responsibility for an animal s condition by an owner, exhibitor, fitter, trainer, or participant whether or not he or she was actually instrumental in or had knowledge of the treatment of the animal in contravention of this code of ethics. 10. The act of entering an animal is the giving of consent by the owner, exhibitors, fitters, trainers, or absolutely responsible person to have any disciplinary action taken by the fair or livestock show against such individuals published in any publication of the International Association of Fairs and Expositions, including Fairs and Expositions and any special notice to members. 11. The act of entering of an animal in a fair or livestock show is the giving of verification by the owner, exhibitors, fitters, trainers, or absolutely responsible person that he or she has read the IAFE National Code of Show Ring Ethics and understands the consequences of and penalties provided for actions prohibited by the code. It is further a consent that any action which contravenes these rules and is also in violation of federal, state, or provincial statutes, regulations, or rules may be released to appropriate law enforcement authorized El Paso County 4-H Small Animal Projects Page 17

18 with jurisdiction over such infractions. 12. MEAT QUALITY ASSURANCE TRAINING: No youth will be allowed to show any livestock animal unless the exhibitor is up to date on Meat Quality Assurance Training 45 days prior to fair. Every 4-H youth member who enrolls in a market or breeding animal project will sign a statement indicating their understanding and compliance with the Wholesome Meat Act. These requirements apply to youth in rabbit and poultry projects as well as large livestock. MQA Training will be sufficient for both the Pork Quality Assurance Program and the Meat Quality Assurance Program. 13. A Country of Origin Affidavit/Declaration statement is required for every market animal covered by the COOL law. The COOL statement must accompany the sales release form required by the Jr. livestock Sale Committee. 14. The Jr. Livestock Sale Committee must receive Sale release form and COOL statement no later than Noon on the Friday before the Jr. Livestock sale. 15. There is a camping area available for use by 4-H youth members and their immediate families. Space is on a first come first serve basis and camping permits should be purchased in advance from the fair office. All 4-H youth members staying in the camping area must be accompanied by an adult. No dogs permitted in the camping area without first receiving Fair Board approval. Additional camping regulations, rules, and requirements are at the discretion of fair management. 16. No vehicle other than Official Cars will be permitted inside the fenced area around the barns and livestock arena after Monday at noon. Vehicles for the purpose of hauling feed and supplies will not be permitted on the fairgrounds. Livestock exhibitors must arrange to supply their needs for the week prior to noon on Monday. SMALL ANIMAL ROUND ROBIN SHOWMANSHIP CONTEST Superintendent: Alison Ludwig and Jenny Sauter Date/Time: Closing Saturday of Fair, Check-in at 7:30 AM, Competition begins at 8:00 AM (starting with seniors, then juniors and intermediates.) If not checked in by 8:00 AM the participant may receive an automatic 50 point deduction in final score. Fee: None Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Junior, Intermediate and Senior Small Animal Showmen will be determined through a Round-Robin Showmanship Contest. (4-H youth members will participate in this contest as appropriate.) 1. The Champion and Reserve Champion Junior, Intermediate and Senior showmen from each of the following small animal divisions (cavy, dog, llama/alpaca, poultry, rabbit, and miniature horse if applicable) will compete in the Small Animal Round Robin for Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion honors. Any member that does not show in Round Robin will forfeit their ribbons and premiums, unless their absence is approved prior to the show by their species superintendent. 2. If the same person wins Champion or Reserve Champion in more than one species then they must choose which species they will compete in and receive approval from the small animal round robin superintendent of their choice following their final show. The species which the multiple champion does not select to represent in Round Robin will then be offered to the third or fourth place overall in that species to compete in Round Robin. 3. Separate Round Robin contests for Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors will be held. 4. Each participant can earn a maximum of 10 points on their appearance and knowledge of their own species and 100 points on their ability to show their own species and 100 points for their ability to show EACH of the other species as broken down on the score sheet. 5. The animals used for the competition will be selected by that species superintendent and is subject to the approval of the round robin superintendent El Paso County 4-H Small Animal Projects Page 18

19 6. The lowest station score for each exhibitor will be dropped from final tally of scores to determine final placings, in each age group. General Rules: 4-H SMALL ANIMAL PHOTO CONTESTS Cavy, Poultry, Rabbit, Llama, Pocket Pets, Cats Superintendents: Species Superintendents Fee: None 1. Cavy, Llama/Alpaca, poultry, rabbit, pocket pet, and cat fair entries must be delivered on tabletop exhibit day to the Whitemore Building. 2. The subject of the photo must be cavy if submitted in the cavy contest; llama or alpaca is submitted in the llama contest; pocket pets if submitted in the pocket pet contest; poultry if submitted in the poultry contest, rabbit if submitted in the rabbit contest and cat if submitted in the cat contest H members may only submit one photo per species for those species in which they are enrolled in the project. Cloverbuds may enter any one of the six small animal species and need only to be enrolled in the Cloverbuds project. 4. The 4-H exhibitor must take the photo. 5. Color or black & white photos will be accepted. 6. Any size up to 8 x 10 is acceptable. 7. The photo must be in a stand up frame. 8. The exhibitors name, age, and club must be on the back of the frame. 9. Categories are Cloverbuds (participation ribbon only), Junior, Intermediate, and Senior. DIVISION SPE 4-H PREMIER EXHIBITOR CONTEST Superintendent: Species Superintendents All Exhibitors are encouraged to enter. Entries for this division should be made on FairEntry. Premier Exhibitor is awarded to the exhibitor that best combines several aspects of the 4-H project experience. You may enter the Premier Exhibitor contest for each species for which you exhibit. There will not be any distinction between ages. Members signed up for the Premier Exhibitor contest will be posted in the barn for poultry and rabbits and in Whittemore for llama/alpaca, and cavy. Interviews: Sign up for interview times with the superintendent during check-in for each of your species. Awards: An award will be given to the Champion of each of the four species divisions in the Premier Exhibitor Contest. The Awards will be given out at the El Paso County 4-H Achievement Celebration. The show begins after Rabbit Show is completed. Time/Date for the Guinea Pig Showmanship Classes: Following the cavy show Fees: $5.00 per exhibitor, and $1.00 per animal General Rules: 1. Only two cavies per breed, per exhibitor may be shown. 2. Bring your entries IN CAGES to the Whittemore Building and check-in with the superintendent. 21 3. The superintendent will release cavies after the show is over. 4. All cavies will be judged based on breed and sex. 5. Best of Show and Best Reserve of Show earn rosettes. Ribbons will be awarded using the Danish system 6. Pet Class (Mixed Breeds) Cavies in this class will NOT be allowed to compete for Best in Show, under any circumstance. Cavies in this class will be judged based only on appearance including health, fur, teeth, and body conformation. If the Judge cannot determine body conformation, the Judge can decide on a breed the cavy most resembles. Showmanship: Winners will be announced after scores are tabulated. Premier Exhibitor: Entry Code: SPE01 - Cavy DIVISION SLA LLAMA/ALPACA SHOW Superintendent: Stacy Cantu Assistant Superintendent: Tara Cantu Time/Date of Stalling: Llama/alpaca must arrive at the fairgrounds on Opening Saturday of Fair, between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Fees: $5.00 per exhibitor for the 4-H Youth show, and $1.00 per animal. Time/Date: First Sunday of Fair is the show. All Llama/Alpaca s must be in the area for the show by 7:30 AM for check in. The show will start at 8:00 AM with showmanship. General Rules: 1. Any unruly llama/alpaca will be removed from the show. The superintendent or Judge may rule an animal as unruly, as required. 2. Contestant must be 4-H youth members enrolled in the El Paso County llama/alpaca project as of May 01, of current year. 3. The contestant does not need to own the llama/alpaca used in the Performance/Obstacle Class or Showmanship provided they have participated in and met the requirements of the lease-a-llama/alpaca program in El Paso County. Once at the fairgrounds, the 4-H youth member must care for the llama/alpaca (except in matters of safety). 4. A stall fee of $5 will be charged for each stall needed and is due with fair entry fees. 5. All Llama/Alpaca s will be stalled during the week of fair. Exhibitors MUST clean stalls daily, and are REQUIRED to walk their animal(s) daily for exercise. 6. All Llama/Alpaca members are responsible for feeding and watering their animals daily. 7. Providing space availability each Llama/Alpaca club will have an extra stall for food, bedding and stall cleaning materials. 8. A health certificate will be required for all animals entering the fairgrounds, to be handed in at the gate during load-in. There will be a discount health check day offered through the large animal committee, prior to fair. 22 Classes: Class 1: Showmanship Divisions: Junior 8-10, Intermediate 11-13, and Senior as of December 31 st, of current 4-H year. A Showmanship class is a demonstration of the handler s ability to show his animal to its best advantage at halter. Judging is based on the exhibitor s skills in fitting, grooming, animal knowledge, following directions, and showing style when presenting the animal to the Judge. The animal s conformation is not considered. Handler s attire should be neat, clean, and appropriate. Black pants or skirt, Western or white shirt or blouse and sturdy shoes or boots. Champions and Reserve Champions in all age divisions will be given at completion of the show on Sunday and qualify for Small Animal Round Robin to be held on the closing Saturday of fair starting at 8:00 AM Performance Classes will follow Showmanship. Prizes will be awarded for Junior, Intermediate and Senior Performance Champion based on ALSA points for obstacle, PR and Packing Class 2: Obstacle This class demonstrates the llamas/alpacas obedience and willingness to complete the activities requested by the handler. Obstacles will include a bridge or ramp, jumps, change of pace, and backing. Ribbons will be awarded. Class 3: PR This class tests llamas/alpacas ability to participate in community events. PR obstacles will include stairs or ramps, petting, loading in a vehicle, backing and picking up a foot or showing teeth. Ribbons will be awarded. Class 4: Pack -Wednesday of fair This class simulates the condition and obstacles encountered when packing on the trail. All packs must have two straps and panniers must be filled out. Obstacles will include a bridge or ramp and backing. Ribbons will be awarded. Class 5: Costume Wednesday of fair This class is judged on costuming on member and llama/alpaca. The more coverage the llama/alpaca tolerates, the higher the score. Members must submit information for the announcer to read about the costume and member as the member enters the ring. Ribbons will be awarded to participants. Class 6: Best of Show This class is judged on the Best of Show among the llama/alpaca entered in the show. Plaques will be given to the Champion and a Rosette will be given to the Reserve Champion. Premier Exhibitor: Entry Code: SPE02- Llama/Alpaca Musical Llama: Wednesday of Fair - this is open to the public for adults and children ages 8 and older by December 31 st, of current 4-H year to participate. We will provide the llamas. Ribbon will be awarded to participants.
