1 Town Hall & Prince Memorial Library Closing at Noon Today! A heads up that Town Hall & Prince Memorial Library will be closing at 12:00pm today for Employee Appreciation Day. Thank you for your understanding!
2 Did you take a great shot in Cumberland? If so, we'd like you to consider sending it to us. We'll feature the best photos in a twice-a-year photo exhibit at Town Hall and/or in our Annual Report. This is an ongoing project, so we'll happily accept your photos at any time of year. Here are some simple guidelines: All photos should capture a sense of place. They must be photographed in Cumberland or must feature a Cumberland resident participating in a Cumberland event. (We will request signed photo release forms where necessary and will send the form to you for completion.) All submissions must be no more than six months old. Photos used will include a photo credit. Submitting photos gives the Town of Cumberland permission to use or publish the photographs in a Town exhibit, in the Town's Annual Report, on the Town website, in social media pages, and in program brochures. Please send your photo submissions to eye@cumberlandmaine.com. Another Successful Fill A Bus, Fill A Belly Event!
3 The PTO's Fill A Bus, Fill A Belly (FAB, FAB) event was their biggest event so far! From December 4th-8th the MSAD #51 PTO collected non-perishable food items for the Community Food Pantry at Greely Middle School. The effort collected over 6,800lbs of food (almost double of what was collected last year) which will go a long way in helping families in our community. Thank you to all the PTO members for their passion for such an important fundraiser. In the process, over 50 PTO volunteers ranging from dads, moms, and kids, set a new school bus unloading record of 6 minutes and 37 seconds! An awesome community effort and a great reminder of how much we all pull together to help out our neighbors! Town Hall Holiday Hours

Photo Credit: Cumberland Historical Society) It's amazing to look at this picture and consider that only 51 years ago we were notified of emergencies by our dedicated Red Network operators. On December 28, 1966, Cumberland's Red Network operators turned in their telephones and were released from duty. The changeover to a full-time operator and air horn system for alerting firefighters resulted in the end of the Red Network, which was set up in April Under the system, a call to the Cumberland Fire Department would scramble the operators, who each had a list of eight to 12 firefighters to alert. Today, calls are often received from cell phones equipped with GPS via the Enhanced 911 system. They are routed to and answered by our regional communication center, CCRCC in Windham. Caller location is plotted on maps and dispatchers have an array of data at their fingertips, including instructions for CPR and child birth. From CCRCC, the call is dispatched nearly simultaneously by radio system to fire department pagers and radios, via Computer Aided Dispatch to department apparatus, and to firefighters' cell phones via text message.
11 The technology may change, but the passion and dedication to service hasn't. Thank you to the Cumberland Historical Society for sharing this photo! Firefighters for Kids Toy Drive Have a toy donation? Look for the jazzy collection boxes at all of the locations: Cumberland Town Hall, Dews Doors, North Yarmouth Fire Station, Rachel's On the Green, and West Cumberland Fire Station. All locations will accept donations during their normal business. Thank you for your support!
12 Clearing Snow from Fire Hydrants
13 It's that time of year when we need our communities help. If you have a hydrant near your home please shovel a clear path to and around the hydrant. This will save a great amount of time if there is a fire emergency at your home or in your neighborhood. Thank you for helping keep you and your neighbors safe this chilly winter! Greely Lacrosse Fundraiser Greely Lacrosse players and volunteers will be collecting discarded Christmas trees to raise money for the Greely Lacrosse program! This year they are offering two separate pickup
14 days for you to choose from, Saturday, December 30th and Saturday, January 6th. For $20 they will come to your house, collect your tree and, dispose of it for you. To sign-up for their curb-side pickup, please visit Note the following dates for library closings: Thursday, December 14th - closing at Noon - Employee Appreciation Day Tuesday, December 26th - Closed Tuesday, January 2nd - Closed Lecture Series: Gary Goodrich biochemist and organic farmer, shares his sustainable, organic farm model Thursday, December 21 at 6:30 pm (Prince Memorial Library)

Goodrich is putting all of this into action at Replenova Farm and will share his insight and experiences. Replenova Farm grows organic produce and cherry tomatoes to be sold seasonally in local markets in Southern Maine. Goodrich is a biochemist and former biotechnology business owner, as well as a life-long organic farmer. His talk is part of the Prince Memorial Library Lecture Series, featuring local experts and speakers on a wide range of topics. Light refreshments will be served. 'Tis the Season of Giving - Holiday Food Drive After a very successful Thanksgiving Food Drive, The Community Food Pantry is holding a Holiday Food Drive to provide for the 80 families that visit our local food pantry monthly! We need the community's help to make this a special holiday season. We are asking for groups of residents to sign up for a particular item!
