Paw Prints The Newsletter of the Rand Park Dog Training Club, Inc. March/April 2017 Rudy Kuper, 55 year Rand Park Member, is heading South! We have begun the last training season before our summer break, and I want to take a moment to thank all our club members who have given unselfishly of their time and know-how. If you are new to Rand Park DTC you may not realize how many people it takes to keep your club running smoothly. We have 15 Board members, approximately 39 Committee members and approximately 30 Instructors. (Please forgive me if the numbers are not exact, but this will give you an idea of just how important our members are.) And many club members wear two, three and even four hats. Working on a club function is a lot of fun and helps to build new and lasting friendships. Forrest and I met Gloria and Bill Urquhart more than 25 years ago in Puppy Kindergarten and became fast friends. This is just one example of how our beloved dogs bring people together. AND DOG PEOPLE ARE SPECIAL! Our good friend Rudy Kuper is leaving the area for sunny Florida to be with his family. Rudy is the longest active member of the Rand Park Dog Training Club, having joined in Rudy has held many positions with the club: President, Vice President, Chairman of the Board, Adviser to the Board, Director of Training, Assistant Director of Training, Director, and he has served on many committees including.by-laws and Club Policies. He also has chaired Awards Committees, Banquets, Dog Shows and Tracking Tests, as well as Park District programs. We will miss Rudy and his delicious chocolates but we know he will enjoy his time with his children in Florida. We wish him the very best. Helene and Jerry Wulff Photo: Rudy holding his 50 Year Member Award. President's Message This year, the Board and Committee Chairs have worked hard on preparing written descriptions of their responsibilities that will make it easier for other members to take them over. Please find some time to join us in working for our club. (Contact our Secretary, Linda Forman, for a copy of the "job description" of something that interests you. The majority of the committees and jobs will only require a small amount of your free time. And help is always welcome at our Obedience Trial and Brunch no experience necessary. My 4th term as President of RPDTC will soon come to a close. I am grateful for the support and help I have received from so many club members. Without this support our club would no longer exist and my job would have been incredibly difficult. God Bless, Ruth S. Shields, President RPDTC Inside: Sad News - Note from Gloria Blanton -"Brags" - Trick Dog Title - Recipe - Awards Banquet & Raffle Info - Banquet Invitation - Anniversaries - Trial Help Wanted - Trial Donation Request - Arizona - Dues Form - Fun Match Entry Form

Sad News Long time Rand Park member Kathy Hahn died on March 3 after a two year battle with cancer. For many years before they moved out of the area Kathy, her husband Joe, and their Brittany Spaniels were always at training on Tuesday nights. Our condolences go to Joe and their family. Alice Terrill, a well-know part of the local "dog community" for many years died on January 9 at the age of 99. According to MaryAnn Gobbo, "she use to come to our Rand Park dinners. She was a lovely woman and wonderful to talk to." Dearest Tori, I find it difficult to say goodbye, so I will just ask you to wait for me like you always have. ICON S TORI-LORD OF THE RINGS CD RE November 30, 2002 to March 2, 2017 You have been my faithful companion and my guardian for most of your 14 years, we have been on vacation in Maine where you warned me about the fishermen coming to steal the lobsters at 4 a.m. each morning, and on our trip to Canada to get your Canadian Novice title, which you could care less about, but you did it to make me happy. You even tried Agility, but all the equipment scared the wits out of you, so we tried Tracking and that was fun until you began to worry that I would fall down or hurt myself in some way and you kept coming back to check on me. You were more my guardian than I was yours. As you began to age, you tried to do it gracefully, and pretty much succeeded, then you bloated, and recovered, and I realized how close I was to almost losing you, but I was lucky to have you for 2-plus more years. I cannot tell you how much you are missed Jazz has been looking high and low for you and has just now realized that you are gone. Wiz thought he would become the new leader of the house, but Jazz set him straight. Goodbye my dear loving Tori you are missed. Love Always, MOM From JoAnn Neville: On October 1, 20016, I said goodbye to my Wheaten, Guinness. He had been having problems with falling, all four legs spread out and unable to get up. I loved him too much to allow him to suffer. I will eventually write a formal tribute but I am not ready. He would have been 15 in January and six years cancer free. I have been through this before but this one was the hardest.

Cruiser vom Riverwoods CD, BN, RE, JH, NAP, NJP, PC, CGCA, RAT, DERBY PRUFUNG Prize 1 & NAVHDA NATURAL ABILITY PRIZE 1 May 1, 2006 to January 31, 2017 Cruiser was my first boy dog. There were two litters at King's Kennel. I liked Cruiser right away. I brought my friend Sandy to see the puppies. The two litters were outside so I called "puppy" and he was the only one to come in, so I think he liked me too!! We found out if we wanted him he would have to do German gundog testing so my husband, Lenny, went to talk to them and promised to put a title on him. Cruiser did very well and earned his Derby Prufung Prize 1. He even got H's we had no idea but everyone said that was great! Then I added a NAVHDA Prize 1 and a Junior Hunter title. We came to Rand Park for obedience. He really didn't like it. He loved to walk to the end of the leash so he could come back, and we got a choker. He also liked to lay down on the way. Barb Krynski's min pins would jump over him. He did get a BN, CD and RE! Then we did Agility. He really didn't like that either but I did, so he got his NAP, and NJP! He did very well in Conformation; got a four point Major and ten single points. We never finished that final major because things happen. He started going swimming with Kathy Hansen's Chaser. He loved that and we tried Dock Diving. When my mom was in the nursing home I would bring him and he would heel with wheel chairs and people would stop and pet him. My mom was so proud and would say that's her granddog. He loved going for long walks in the woods with Terri Everwine's husband, Chris. They used to have Shorthairs and Chris missed having a real dog to walk. In September he started Barn Hunt. He loved it, even when I was out of town. Karen Schaubel took him to class and helped him through it! I hope I didn't bore you with his story, but he touched a lot of lives and did a lot of stuff. Daisy, Hershey and I miss him. Pat Beckstrom A Note from Gloria Blanton After three-and-a-half months in rehab, I am still on the mend, but doing so at home with my puppies. And I am still in therapy, learning to walk again, using a walker and wheelchair. I want everyone to know how much I appreciated all the cards, flowers and good wishes Rand Park members sent to me. I cannot find the words to tell you how much it helped to keep my spirits in check. I never expected recovery to take so long and be so difficult. Hearing from people who wish you the best is immeasurable, and means so very much. Thank you all. I'm hoping to be back with my turkey hot dogs real soon. Gloria It's SO good to know that Gloria is at home with her puppies. Puppies are the best medicine! But Rand Park misses her and her turkey hot dogs. ed

Good News... Rand Parkers have a lot to brag about! From Joanne Baran Cooper Khan of Arlington Heights BN, RA, CGCA qualified for his 2nd leg in Rally Excellent on Saturday, February 4, at the Car-Dun-Al show in Huntley. The following day (at the same show) he qualified for both his RE & CD titles. From Cindy Placko Dannie completed leg #2 for Novice obedience at the CarDunAl trials in Huntley February 4. Only one more leg to go for her CD. We can't wait to start competing in Graduate Novice and Open obedience next. Cindy and Dannie are in the photo on the right. From JoAnn Neville Oliver earned his UKC Scentwork SC (Superior Container) on February 12 at For Your K9. From Lin Hartnett Airecraft s New Chapter BN, RN, CA, CGC, aka Page, had a busy Fall, first receiving the 9th Place Airedale Terrier in the 2016 AKC National Owner Handled Series. Page then went to the Basenji Club of Southeastern Wisconsin the weekend of October 22 and 23, 2016 and earned her Coursing Ability. On November 12, 2016 we competed in the Car-Dun-Al Rally Trial and got her Rally Novice Title! Lin Harnett and Airecraft s New Chapter BN, RN, CA, CGC are in the photo below. Welcome New Members Valerie Manning Jane and Albert Callaway Tracy Aller Pamela O'Shea Robert Schuldes Linda Arthur We hope that you and your dog will benefit from your association with Rand Park Dog Training Club. 5 From Karen Schaubel Maya took High Combined in Rally at the Chicagoland Shetland Sheepdog Club's show on March 5th. She was just five days shy of her 12th birthday. I'm very proud of my Maya. Karen and Maya are in the photo on the right. From Mary Laurie: Oscar received his Barnhunt Senior title last month with a second place finish. The order in which "brags" are listed is based on how well they fit into the Paw Prints layout and in no way reflect their importance. All members' accomplishments are important! Ursula Barb Krynski reports... The AKC has started a new titling program: Trick Dog! Titles from Do More With Your Dog will be recognized. If you're a CGC Evaluator you are automatically a Trick Dog Evaluator. For more information go to: K-9 Meatballs Recipe also from Barb Krynski Ingredients 1/2 pound ground beef 1/2 cup cooked brown rice 1 carrot, shredded 1 stalk celery, finely chopped 1/2 cup frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained 2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley 2 tablespoons parmigiano-reggiano cheese 1 large egg 2 teaspoons ground turmeric Preparation Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Grease a muffin pan or a baking sheet. In a medium bowl, combine all of the ingredients and mix well. 6 This Year, Rand Park's Annual Awards Banquet will be on May 7. Don't Miss It! By Ursula Hoeft If you've never been to a Rand Park Awards Banquet, don't miss it this year. It's a really big deal! You'll enjoy a delicious meal, and you'll bask in the camaraderie and good fellowship that are always abundant when Rand Parkers get together. And you'll be inspired I always am! when you see all the fantastic awards that will be presented to Rand Park members for their achievements during the past year. You'll be motivated, too, to dedicate more time to training so that you will be among the folks receiving awards next year. The Banquet invitation is in this issue of Paw Prints. Be sure to fill it out and send it to Sheryl Phelps or give it to her at training. She needs to have it by April 26. This year, members in good standing (members whose dues are paid as of April 1) will pay $20 for their dinner. All guests will pay $ An amazing price for a wonderful meal and adult beverages are included! Bring your family and friends to the Banquet. But if you're not coming with a group, don't worry about filling in the "seating request" section of the reservation form. The folks in charge of the Banquet will seat you with interesting and friendly people. It's easy to do because all dog lovers are interesting and friendly! Awards Banquet Raffle In addition to great food, adult beverages, good fellowship, interesting "dog talk," and a plethora of awards, there also will again be a Raffle. Please consider donating items. Marge Kabala and Kathy Laspina are in charge, and they want to have as much "stuff" as possible to raffle off without dipping into the Club's treasury. To do that, they need your help! They will welcome donations of dog gear, of course, and will also be glad to get just about anything else you care to donate. Some of the items they receive will be included in baskets geared to a particular theme, so you might consider things for gardening, scrapbooking, picnicking, reading, a romantic evening at home, to mention just a few. Think of others be creative! Small items will also be appreciated; they'll be included in baskets and will make for more variety. Consider sponsoring a whole basket; maybe ask someone to partner on it with you. Ask businesses you frequent to donate gift certificates it's good advertising for them. Money donations will also be gratefully accepted. (Soon after the Holidays I start watching for things on sale in stores. When I find something that's suitable for the Raffle at a bargain price, I buy it. I've already almost filled a box marked "For Rand Park Raffle.") Bring your raffle donations to the training hall or call Marge ( ) or Kathy ( ) if you need to make other arrangements or want to know more about the raffle. Ursula Anniversary pins will be presented to the following members at the Awards Banquet: Lynn Adam for 25 Years Helene and Jerry Wulff for 50 Years

Sage advice from Mary Laurie, an expert on Chicago weather: Oscar and Vinny received new winter coats from Santa this year. They have been pleased not to have had to wear them much so far. However, I am a born and raised Chicagoan and will not pack those coats away until May 1. (If it stays cold, maybe Mary will let Oscar and Vinny wear their coats to training so that we can see how cute they look in them. - ed.) Tracking news: Two RPDTC members passed their Tracking Certification tests at Moraine Tracking Club's Certification Day on March 12. Mickey Tichawa and his airedale Milo passed their TD certification, and Jean Eremo and her miniature poodle Wiz passed their TDU certification. Our Arizona Adventure By Gustav zu Hoeft, CD, a.k.a Gus I sure missed my big sister Kate when we were in Scottsdale this Winter. Thinking about her still brings tears to my eyes. Being an only dog again, my responsibilities were pretty overwhelming. It was up to me to make sure we were safe in our rented house and, of course, in our car. This very serious responsibility caused me to be injured while scaring people away in a supermarket parking lot. Mom and dad took me everywhere with them. Luckily or maybe not so luckily for people expecting warm weather it was cool enough for me to go with them in the car wherever they went. While I was in high-power car guarding mode - that's what mom and dad believe I seriously wrenched my shoulder! It was so painful that I "screamed" every time someone touched me. Luckily my human brother, who has three cats, one of them 17-plus years old and diabetic that needs lots of veterinarian care, has a terrific vet whom he recommended. The nice vet, a lady, determined that nothing was broken and gave mom and dad pills for me to take. They helped and I got better. But that wasn't the end of my Scottsdale medical issues. Next, I noticed a cyst on my side (poodles tend to get cysts a lot). I couldn't ignore it. I licked it. I chewed it. I chewed it some more. And it got infected. So back to the nice vet we went. The nice lady vet removed the cyst, and I ended up with stitches also one of those awful collars a cone? The thing was intended to make it impossible for me to get to the stitches. It also made it impossible for me to get comfortable. It was so awful that mom and dad didn't have the heart to keep it on me - thank you mom and dad!!! Instead, they went to Target and bought a package of baby "Onsies" with cute sayings on them that they made me wear so that I couldn't get to the stitches. The "Onesies" weren't uncomfortable, but I felt pretty ridiculous in them, as you can imagine. (You can see what I mean by the photo.) But there was an advantage to having a "Onesie" on. People thought I was a Service Dog! And there were a lot of Service Dogs in Scottsdale. Everywhere we went there were Service Dogs: in department stores, in restaurants, in grocery stores - everywhere! I doubt that they were all legitimate. And I don't mind people passing dogs off as Service Dogs, but I really hate when they put dogs in grocery store carts because I know that some of the stuff we dogs walk in is not something I want coming in contact with our food. I doubt that the folks who place their dogs in grocery carts think about that the germs! Anyway, I'm glad to be home, and I'm looking forward to seeing my Rand Park friends again. Wish I could go to the Banquet. It's gonna be a good time! Maybe I'll be able to come if I wear my "Onesie."
