It will make belonging to Rand Park DTC more enjoyable. And the club needs your support to remain successful. Our dogs did us proud at the Park Ridge Library By Ursula Hoeft Our dogs were a hit at the Park Ridge Library on Wednesday, June 18, when we put on a demo for children and adults as part of the library's Paws to Read summer program. While Bill Urquhart was our official MC and Gloria his able assistant, we all had an opportunity to introduce our dogs and provide information about him/her and about each dog's breed. Then it was time for our dogs to show the children what they can do. The obedience exercises the dogs demonstrated were impressive, but seeing them do tricks may have been the children's favorite part of the demo. Mackenzie's collection of tricks was amazing useful too. Seems she helps mom, Eleanor, clean up by putting her toys away. After all the "formal" stuff, there was plenty of time to mingle with the children and answer questions about our dogs. And, finally, the dogs received their rewards for putting on a great performance: lots of praise and pats on the head! We have Ann Mednick to thank for coordinating this demo. It was great fun! (See Ann's message on the next page.) I know for a fact that the children were paying attention to what we were telling them about our dogs. The weekend after our visit to the library, as my husband and I and our two dogs were leaving a little league game we had just watched at a Park Ridge park, a little girl came rushing over to us and asked if the small black poodle we had with us was named Gus. She had seen us at the library and actually remembered his name. I was amazed! The 44 paws and 22 human feet that participated in the Paws to Read demo belonged to: Mary Ann Fowler and Bauz Eleanor Goss and Mackenzie Eileen Hennessey and Annie Ursula Hoeft and Gus Ann Mednick and Bailey Donna Nowak and Pretzel Barb Pische and Cody Ruth Shields and Ceilidh Gloria and Bill Urquhart and Scarlet & Tara Clyde Werner and Rosie

From Ann Mednick, Rand Park's New Demo Chair I'd like to thank everyone who donated their time to the Rand Park/Park Ridge library demonstration. It was my first demo and it went so well. Your support and help was appreciated very much! I hope you'll take part in our other demos/visits. We visit the following three facilities every month: 1. Lutheran General Adult Day Care 1st Monday of every month at 1: Ballard Nursing Home Fluctuates from 2nd or 3rd Wednesday of every month at 2: Nazarethville 2nd Saturday of every month at 10:15 (excluding the summer months of June, July and August). Please consider sharing your dog(s) with people at these facilities, mostly seniors, and you'll realize what joy our pets bring to them!! Call me (Ann Mednick Ann Mednick, ) for more information about visits #1 and #2. For more information about visit #3, call Barb Pische, President's Message Summer seems to be flying by. I hope you have had a chance to enjoy it with your family and dogs. Remember to protect your dogs against ticks, fleas and mosquitoes even in the city. September will be here faster than we want it. In this issue of Paw Prints, you will find the registration form for the fall obedience/rally classes. Be sure to mail it before the deadline. Some classes fill very fast. If you are interested in tracking, please contact Terri Everwine. Usually, forms are not available until mid-to-late August. But, there may be a wait list so be sure to let her know you are interested. Unfortunately for us, we are losing two very active members of Rand Park, Kathy and Joe Hahn. They will be moving out of the area later this summer. Both were very active in tracking (at one time instructing, and always willing to lay a track for a test) and obedience (Kathy has been one of our best instructors.). Good luck in your new location, Kathy and Joe. We will really miss you! See everyone else in the fall! Lois Leidahl-Marsh We enjoyed another successful summer of training... Our summer training has gone very well this year. We had about 10 to 14 people show up every time. Only once did we have to cancel because of rain. Most of the people who came were from the area. They heard about the training and came with 4-5 month old puppies or a rescue dog they just got. Some came every week and some came just a few times; then someone new would come the next week. I would like to give a special thanks to Jerry Wulff and Mary Ann Gobbo for teaching a class when Sheryl and I could not come because we were rained out at our homes. We have gotten the names of many of the people who came to Summer training and may sign up for Fall classes because of the training they got from our instructors. Thank you to everyone who helped out this summer. Barbara Pische, Co-Director of Training

Our Members have a lot to brag about! From Dee Morrison: SHR Misty Dawn Acres Gotta Keeper, CGC earned her first UKC Hunt Title on June 30th at the WISILL Hunt. I got doused and she got the ribbon. Congrats to our friends Adele Schaffer and Bella for completing their seasoned title!! That's Dee in the photo on the left, looking very wet. Apparently getting doused was her "reward" for earning their Hunt title. Dee and Keeper From Adele Schaffer: Bella earned her Seasoned Hunting Retriever Title on June 28 at the WISILL HRC Test, Bong Recreation Area. She is now HR Kirstryl Ona Journey North, CD JH WC CGC Happy training! From Beverly Kozlowski: Blaze just got his Beginning Novice Title this weekend. (The weekend of July 5.) I'm so proud of him. From JoAnn Neville: Oliver (Bearded Collie) earned his NW1 (Nosework Level 1 title) on June 22 in Leslie, Michigan. From Gail Kipp: We got 1 st Place and our third leg for our Rally Excellent title on May 31 under Judge Sandra Gould. Thanks everyone for all your help! Now back to BN. Happy Summer, Gail & Buckley too! That's Buckley on the right Adele and Bella From Mary Dellorto: Bliss won two High In Trial and one High Combined at the Winnebago Labrador Retriever Club Specialty (two obedience trials) on June 14. More brags on next page...

From Ruth Shields: It was an award winning day for Rand Parker's at the Maltese National in Louisville, KY on June 5. Three handlers: Clyde Werner, Forrest and me Four dogs: Lilly, Rosie, Cailidh, and Fiona. Eleven legs Five First Places Five Second Places and one Third Place Five Titles What a day! That's Forrest and Ruth with Cailidh and Fiona in the photo on the right; Clyde and Rosie in the photo below. More great news from Ruth: It was an enjoyable day at the North Shore DTC trial on June 15. The venue was perfect. Well organized and the show area was clean and beautiful. Again our pups made Eleanor and me very proud, earning qualifying scores in Novice B as well as very special High in Trial Maltese and High in Trial Scottie trophies. The photos below were taken at North Shore DTC's trial. Ruth and Cailidh are on the right; Eleanor Goss and Mackenzie are on the left. The judge is Rick Cox. Congratulations to all!

The Real Reason Why We Own Dogs Titles are nice, but here's the REAL REASON WHY WE OWN DOGS... Eleanor Goss says... We dress up our dogs and they still like us. That's Mackenzie at the Highland Games held June 20 and 21. Eleanor tells us "you wouldn t believe how many people wanted to take a picture of Mackenzie. I could have made a fortune if I charged a $1 a photo. There were other Scottish dogs at the games but surprisingly Mackenzie was the only Scottie." And Mary Kruse says... The real reason I own dogs is the joy they bring me daily with their wagging tales and never ending antics. (Mary temporarily has a friend's lab mix staying with her.) In the photo, Oscar is on the left and Betty is on the right Send me your pictures and captions for "The Real Reason Why We Own Dogs." I'm sure you all have wonderful pictures of your dogs and great reasons why they enhance your lives. Send them to me. your photos and captions to randparkpawprints@live.com. You can also send them to me via snail mail (Ursula Hoeft, 1814 Illinois Road, Northbrook, IL 60062) or give them to me at training on Tuesday nights. Ursula Summer will be over before we know it much too soon and we'll want to get back to regular training. You'll find a class registration form in this issue of Paw Prints. It's not too early to fill it out and send it to Sheryl Phelps along with your check. Training begins on September 9; Orientation night is September 2; the last day to register is August 20. It's best to send your registration form in early classes fill up fast and you don't want your dog(s) to miss out!

My Battle with PFSD (Post Fourth Stress Disorder) Or why I hate the Fourth of July! By Gus Hoeft Let me start out by stating that I'm not a curmudgeon, a kill-joy, or a wet-blanket. I LOVE holidays! When I think about Christmas I see lots of presents, lots of company, lots of treats; Easter means an egg hunt (my nose gives me a big advantage over the kids!), helping mom with dinner (by tasting!), and treats; Thanksgiving is about good fellowship and good food who doesn't love turkey? But the Fourth of July is another story. It's my most unfavorite day of the year! I'm still feeling traumatized after this year's Independence Day celebration. I can understand that people wanted to make lots of noise by firing rifles, canons, whatever, when our country declared its independence on July 4, But that was 338 years ago! Come on folks isn't it time to tone it down a little? For me my sister Kate, too, I think, although she's more laidback than I am this year was especially stressful. I'm still suffering from PFSD! Every noise still makes me jump and I only feel safe in dad's workshop at the far end of the basement! The day started badly. Early in the morning on the Fourth, before I'd even had breakfast, I spotted about a "million" people kids, adults, men, women dressed in shorts, all wearing the same color T-shirts with writing on them, running down the park district path across from our house. Some were running really fast. And they were making lots of noise. Whatever scared them must have been pretty terrible. I barked! I figured my barking would get them to run faster it always works with the mailman. After lunch, and all too soon as far as I was concerned, it was time for the parade, a very long parade in Northbrook. They didn't want us to miss out on the fun, so mom and dad took Kate and me Kate looks like she was feeling very stylish in her chapeau; me, I felt like I was wearing a bib. Humiliating! along to "enjoy" the parade with them. (Fun? Enjoy a parade? Not me! Mom and dad are nice people, but clueless sometimes when it comes to understanding our body language.) The parade was a nightmare of non-stop noise. There were the incredibly loud fire and police sirens, the deafening boom of rifles, and even a canon, fired by revolutionary war enactors, the not always melodic, but always loud music of the Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe Band, the other equally loud marching bands. I could go on, but you get the picture you've been to Fourth of July parades you know they're all about noise. Then there were the crowds, the little kids asking to pet us, running their sticky hands through our topknots as if our heads were wet wipes! Ugh! And through it all, we had to wear our patriotic gear: Kate a red-white-and blue visor and me a flag-type kerchief around my neck. We heard a lot of "aren't they cute," and "don't they look adorable," which, I think, made Kate feel good. As for me, I felt ridiculous! After the parade, our street went into big time party mode which lasted for hours with crowds of people eating, drinking, adult beverages, too, and making noise, lots and lots of noise. By now, you've gotta know that I HATE noise! The day finally ended with a huge, very long, and very loud fireworks display in the park across the street from our house. Thank goodness mom and dad didn't make us sit outside with them to watch! Kate and I hid in the basement, convinced that war had been declared without anyone telling us and our house was being bombed. The noise was deafening! I thought the house was going to fall down on us. It didn't, or I wouldn't be writing this. I made it through another Fourth of July. In time, I'll get over my PFSD! But, for now, the basement is still my favorite part of the house.

Legislative Liaison Committee Report July 8, 2014 Rand Park s Legislative Committee consists of Margo Milde, Chair mrm1206@yahoo.com and Lois Leidahl- Marsh bernersplus@comcast.net Please be sure to contact us with any pet legislation concerns or questions. Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies. Groucho Marx Your Illinois Federation, IFDCO (Illinois Federation of Dog Clubs and Owners) is working hard for you! From an Illinois legislative standpoint, all three Animal Abuse Registry bills have been held in respective Committees this Spring: HB 4188, Animal Abuse Registry, which would have tasked the Illinois Dept. of Agriculture with setting up and maintaining an Animal Abuse Registry (as if the Dept. of Ag. didn t have enough to do on limited funding); HB 5978, which would create a fund in the Illinois Treasury to pay for Dept. of Agriculture's Animal Abuse Registry (as if Illinois didn t have better uses for its taxpayer dollars); and SB 3138, Do Not Adopt, which would require Illinois to send all detailed records of animal-related convictions to the Animal Rights group Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), who would maintain independently such a registry for Illinois. SB 3138 was re-referred back to Assignments, HB 5978 was held in the Rules Committee and HB 4188 was held in the Rules Committee after being re-referred there, so they are effectively dead for this session. Yea!!! Since ALDF has been on a nation-wide push to enact such registries, introducing their bills in a number of other states besides Illinois, this is a good victory for us, especially since it discloses the true aims of an Animal Rights group such as ALDF and was an excellent opportunity for us to educate our legislators, which we did. Vigilance is in order since these bills could still pop up in the next Illinois legislative session (Fall) or similar bills at any future date. IFDCO also worked hard to oppose the following bills, harmful to the interests of Illinois dog owners, which also have not advanced as of this time: HB Animal Forfeiture, held in Rules Committee HB Enhanced Animal Abuse Penalties, re-referred to Rules Committee SB Animals, Adequate Shelter, re-referred to Assignments Please see our IFDCO website for further information on these (and other) bills and our "talking points"; click on the Legislation tab on the right hand side: Please note that while I am no longer on the IFDCO Board (I stepped down last Fall in contemplation of my move out-of-state) I still remain very active on the IFDCO Legislative Committee. Food for your funny bone From Jokin' Jerry Wulff A mother asked her son, "Why don't you run down the street and see how old Mrs. Smith is this morning. The boy returned a few minutes later and reported, "Mrs. Smith says her age is none of your business." A despondent man was drowning his sorrows at a friend's house when the friend expressed concern about his overconsumption of liquor. "Aw, leave me alone," the man moaned. "Nobody cares if I drink myself to death." "I do," the friend replied. "You're drinking my booze." A peephole was found drilled in the locker-room wall at a women's gym in Chicago. Police are looking into it.
