1 Paw Prints The Newsletter of the Rand Park Dog Training Club, Inc. February 2012 Our Hero or how Benny saved his little bro By Karen Jaimovich I would like to take this opportunity to recognize an everyday hero, Jaberwock s Blazin Black Benny CD, TD, RO-1, RO-2 (just Benny to us) for saving a life. The trophy I am holding in this picture my little guy, Simba, who was attacked in our backyard by a coyote. And the hero is Benny the smiling Berner on the lefthand side of this picture. If you ve ever wondered if your dog would come to the rescue for you or your loved ones, this story will make a believer out of you. Benny was started as a performance dog from the moment he came home, it was clear that he would try hard to always do what was asked of him. Training was a breeze for us starting in Agility, then Rally, he took home a ribbon from each and every competition he was entered in. But soon his disabilities dysplastic elbows and unstable joints forced us to retire him at the height of his career. I was devastated when my dreams for the show ring were overturned by the need for multiple surgeries, physical therapy, dietary supplements and ongoing treatments. Through all this, though, Benny only wants to play, to hug like no other, and to give his never-ending Berner love to all who meet him. He shares his 4-legged family with our other Berner a rescue named Bruiser and the plucky 8-pound Pomeranian, Simba. As you might guess, Simba is the boss in our house, pushing those Berners around like he s one of them. Last month, however, when I opened the back door like always to let the three dogs out into our yard, I didn t notice the huge, mangy coyote slinking around at the end of the property. Simba did, however, and went flying after him, running at what seemed like 100 m.p.h. He may be used to pushing Berners around, but had a hard lesson to learn when trying to take on the coyote. The coyote grabbed him up, and just as he did, Benny came to his little bro s rescue flying at an alarming speed on legs that can sometimes barely walk, breaking through the Invisible Fence with only the slightest hesitation as he took the jolt. He growled and barked ferociously like I ve never heard before, and the coyote was startled, dropped Simba out of his jaws, then went on his way. I am forever grateful to Benny, and want to recognize him for being a true hero not just for saving Simba s life, but for fulfilling mine. And, a happy ending to this story Simba is making a full recovery he had suffered a deep puncture wound, bruised ribs, and emotional trauma, but has his best buddies to surround him and help him heal. Karen Jaimovich is a Rand Park member. She and Bruiser are working on his obedience and rally titles they also do draft work. They live on the west side of Northbrook in a residential neighborhood near Wood Oaks Park and steps away from a Junior High School. See next page for more about coyotes. 2 Living with Coyotes Interesting information found on Wikipedia: Researchers studied coyote populations in Chicago over a seven-year period ( ), proposing that coyotes have adapted well to living in densely populated urban environments while avoiding contact with humans. They found, among other things, that urban coyotes tend to live longer than their rural counterparts, kill rodents and small pets, and live anywhere from parks to industrial areas. The researchers estimate that there are up to 2,000 coyotes living in "the greater Chicago area"... In other words, we all can expect to have coyotes as neighbors. The Northbrook Animal Control Officer says there are plenty of coyotes in the area, especially near the forest preserves. She says, to keep them safe, people need to take responsibility for their pets and not leave them outside alone, not even in their own yards. Coyotes are normally not dangerous and usually try to avoid having contact with people, but they are natural hunters whose diet consists of small animals. A cute little Pomeranian, Yorkie or Maltese is just part of its food chain to a coyote. Be aware that garbage, pet food, even feeding stations for birds and squirrels will draw coyotes into back yards. Make sure that these "enticements" are not present on your property. And remember, while an electric fence will keep your pet(s) from straying, it won't keep a coyote out of your yard. Thank goodness that Benny was there to save Simba. Not every small dog that's attacked by a coyote will be as fortunate! From the D.O.T. WINTER PROGRAM ** SPRING REGISTRATION ** MEMBERSHIP MEETING The January issue of Paw Prints featured an article on the cover page of a rescue Dalmatian being worked on by a Certified Therapeutic Dog Massage professional, Jackie Limosani. We are so fortunate to have Jackie to present our Winter Program this year. The techniques Jackie will present are not just for therapy, but also for warm ups for your competition dogs, to relax your dog, or to help prevent injuries prior to performance. Years ago I was told to read the book "Monks of Saint Skeet" by the breeder of my dogs and found just a short chapter on massage. My dogs truly love it, as any dog appreciates kind and loving hands, making a very relaxing situation for both dog and handler. Our Program will be on February 28 at the training hall beginning at 7 p.m. No dogs, except for our demo dogs, are invited. This is to insure that everyone can hear what our presenter has to offer. All Rand Park members and current trainees are invited to attend. The Spring Session Registration form is in this issue of Paw Prints. Please send your requests in as early as possible (especially instructors). It makes life a lot easier for me when laying out classes. There will be a MEMBERSHIP MEETING on March 6, at 7:30 p.m., following Orientation. All are welcome to attend. Dee Morrison Director of Training (Photos: Beginners Class students)

3 Titles are nice, but here's the REAL REASON WHY WE OWN DOGS Barb Krynski says... Because they make everything so much more fun when it's shared with them! They make me really notice the little things. We plan to make "The Real Reason Why We Own Dogs" an ongoing Paw Prints feature by including one photo, with caption, every month. And we want YOU to participate. Send me a picture of your dog(s) and the reason why owning a dog enhances your life. Please your photo and caption to randparkpawprints@live.com. You can also send them to me via snail mail (look for the editor's address in this issue of Paw Prints) or give them to me at training on Tuesday nights. - Ursula Thanks, again, to Dee Morrison for this wonderful idea for a monthly Paw Prints feature. Barb with Trixie, Zap and Bingo at Boyd's Mason Lake Lodge From Diane Muzzey I am proud to announce that Evie has earned her 3rd leg and RN (Rally Novice) title at the NOCI Obedience trial in November. She scored a perfect 100 and First Place under judge Arlene King. We'll soon be back to training for our next title, whether in rally or novice obedience! Congratulations Diane and Evie! Needed Chief Ring Steward for Rand Park's 2012 Obedience Trials on Sunday, April 29th Experience is not necessary Kathy Hansen asks that those interested in this very important "job" contact her at , or by to kathyhansen516@gmail.com Stewards also will be needed, so save the date. Dues are Past Due If you have not yet paid your 2012 dues, please don't put it off any longer. Complete the dues form in this issue of Paw Prints and send it to Jackie Limosani along with your check. According to Rand Park DTC's by-laws "A membership will be considered as lapsed and automatically terminated if such member's dues remain unpaid 60 days after the first day of the calendar year." Postage has gone up again and it's getting more and more expensive to mail paper copies of Paw Prints. If you have , you're already getting an electronic copy of the newsletter. Please let Kathy or Joe Hahn or me know if we can stop sending you a paper copy, too. It will save the club money! Ursula

4 Legislative Liaison Committee Report January 20, 2012 Rand Park s Legislative Committee consists of Margo Milde, Chair mrm1206@yahoo.com and Lois Leidahl-Marsh bernersplus@comcast.net Please be sure to contact us with any pet legislation concerns or questions. The essence of Government is power; and power, lodged as it must be in human hands, will ever be liable to abuse. James Madison, speech in the Virginia constitutional convention, 1829 Retired Chicago cop and Vietnam Vet now living in Aurelia, IA gets his pit bull-mix service dog back in favorable court ruling: As discussed in this column last month, retired 30+ years Chicago cop and Vietnam veteran Jim Sak suffered a debilitating stroke in His pit bull mix service dog, named Snickers, was persona non grata thanks to the BSL (breed specific law) against pit bulls in his new home town of Aurelia Iowa. This is clearly a violation of the 2011 Department of Justice final rule concerning the Americans With Disabilities Act, and Mr. Sak, assisted by the Animal Farm Foundation, obtained an attorney to request a preliminary injunction against the City of Aurelia to prevent their enforcement of their breed ban against him and his dog. Judge Mark Bennett, US District Court Judge, Northern District of Iowa, agreed, concluding his Opinion with the comment the public interest in allowing Sak to keep and use his certified and registered service dog, Snickers, substantially outweighs the City s interest in banning Snickers. This is one small, but vital step for Sak, one giant leap for pit bull service dogs. The next move will be Aurelia s should they choose to make it, until that time, Judge Bennett s ruling stands, and Sak keeps his dog. The Animal Farm Foundation continues to carry a great deal of information on this case, accessible at this website: Pit bull attack prompts review of Chicago pet laws: A very unfortunate pit bull attack on a jogger near Chicago s Rainbow Beach focused attention on Chicago dog laws. Just for the record, the owner was in clear violation of the law for dogs running at large (he claims someone left the gate open) as well as owning dogs involved with a serious attack on a human; he turned himself in, and faces fines in the area of $2,500. His first court day is in March. Everything from BSL, to MSN (Mandatory Spay/Neuter), to owner licensing (whatever that would be), to toughening the City s animal codes, to increasing the number of licensed dogs in the City (well under 10% are licensed currently) and everything in between, has been suggested as possible solutions. Alderman Fioretti sponsored a resolution to investigate the problem of dangerous dogs in Chicago, and how dog bite numbers could be lowered. The news media has heavily covered this story, once again bringing pit bulls and BSL back into the news. We will have to wait and see how it all plays out. Steve Dale featured both this topic, and that of Jim Sak, on a WGN-720 radio January 10 podcast entitled Pit Bulls: Should they be banned?, available for free download at this link: Is Minneapolis dog law BSL in disguise? In 2010, Minneapolis tightened up its dangerous dog law, in a move hailed by those concerned with animal bites and public safety issues. Though non-breed specific, it allowed Animal Control officials great latitude in determining which dogs should be euthanized as dangerous. I ve heard rumblings that this law has condemned to death at least several dogs that did not deserve that fate, and my fears were confirmed just today with an article sent me by a Minneapolis resident, concerning a pit bull that defended his owner, a long-time abused woman, against her attacker, her ex-husband, delivering a minor bite on the wrist. For this, the dog was condemned to die, despite pleas from Minneapolis rescue groups as well as from the dog s owner. Story here: (A short follow-up story, link on the lower left corner of this article, mentions the dog was euthanized just in the last few days.) In the wake of Chicago s pit bull attack, the head of Chicago s Animal Care and Control cited the Minneapolis law as perhaps one to look to in considering changes to Chicago s own animal laws. I certainly hope not. U-haul van seized in TN with 145 rescue dogs in horrible conditions: There are many (probably most) rescues and shelters deserving of our admiration. But then there are those that don t deserve to be called that in the most liberal sense of the term. Just last week, Tennessee patrol stopped a suspicious U-haul van and found 145 rescue dogs (actually 144, since one was already dead) crammed into tight cages, without food or water, and in their own wastes, on a long-distance haul from California to Virginia, where they were to be put up for adoption at a pre-arranged adoption day. At least one was proven to be stolen. Story here: Unfortunately, as humane relocation becomes more profitable for those few who do care to profit off of it in this way, we will be undoubtedly seeing more stories such as these.
