Paw Prints The Newsletter of the Rand Park Dog Training Club, Inc. Summer 2017 Oh, Say Can You See.. I always get goose bumps when I hear our national anthem played. I miss the days when every dog show began with this powerful song. I m proud that Rand Park DTC has continued this tradition. Ever wonder why we play the version that we do? It s because it is performed by The New Tradition Chorus, with our very own Don Meseth as one of the singers! On July 7, 2001 the one hundred and thirty eight men of this group became the SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America), gold medal champions! The songs they sang that day spoke to the valor of the military and the poignancy of war. Among the songs sung were There is Something About a Soldier and The White Cliffs of Dover. Since September 11, 2001 these two songs have taken on a new meaning to both the men who sing them and the audiences who hear them. I think that since that day our national anthem has also become more meaningful. The next time you hear The Star-Spangled Banner played know that one of our very own members is adding his beautiful voice to the chorus singing. Barb Krynski Classes Start September 5 Once the Fourth of July is over, Summer seems to fly by! It soon will be September again and time to get back to Tuesday night training. The Class Registration Form for was ed to members for whom we have addresses. It also is included in this issue of Paw Prints. It's important to have a well behaved dog a good reason to participate in obedience classes. Going to classes adds an important additional dimension to your relationship with your BFF. 3 Help Wanted.. September is fast coming up and our club still does not have a Director of Training. Without this position filled I don t know how we will be able to hold classes. It s not hard, it IS time consuming, but it s something you just need to really work at for a couple of weeks per session. I have offered to help with arranging class schedules, etc, but cannot commit to the position again due to work constraints. Anyone willing to step up? Our club is a club, not a business, and we cannot exist without volunteers. We need YOUR help!!! Barb Krynski, Vice President Contact RPDTC President Lois Breslow to discuss the DOT position lois8430@comcast.net Phone: New AKC Rally Classes and Titles By Ursula Hoeft Many of you know that the AKC has added new classes and titles to the AKC Rally program. As stated on the AKC's website, "over the years we have heard from many rally handlers who have won the Rally Novice title, saying they are not ready to move up to the Advanced level class, which requires the dog to work off-leash. AKC has created a new class and title for dogs that have won the Rally Novice title, but have not yet earned a qualifying score in the Advanced class. The Rally Intermediate class and associated title (RI), will provide a stepping-stone class to help prepare teams for the off-leash performance required in the Advanced class. The Intermediate course is a mirror image of the Advanced course without a jump. It is the Novice exhibitor s choice to take advantage of this additional opportunity and the RI title is not required to enter the Advanced class. We have also listened to the Rally Fancy who have long asked for a champion level title. We are excited to announce the new Master class and associated title (RM), as well as the Rally Champion title (RACH), both of which will provide additional challenges for dedicated rally exhibitors. "The criteria to earn the RACH title (sounds like ROCK ) requires the team to earn 20 triple qualifying scores; qualifying in the Advanced B, Excellent B and Master classes at the same trial, at 20 separate events, plus earn 300 RACH points from the Excellent B and Master classes. Points are determined by a dog s score. At least 200 RACH points must be earned from the Rally Master class. "Clubs may start to apply for events with these new classes on August 1, 2017 for events held on or after November 1, The new Rally Intermediate and Rally Master classes are effective for all AKC Rally trials held on or after November 1, 2017." Photo: Rally Judge Dr. Sandy Gould congratulating Jean Eremo and Wiz. Judge Dr. Sandy Gould has graciously offered to hold a class for us on the changes made to the AKC Rally program. Watch for an announcement with date, time and place, and plan to attend.

Rand Park Tracking First of all, I want to give a huge THANK YOU to Terri Everwine for being the chair of the Tracking Committee for so many years! Terri left us for North Carolina in May. She is loving her new home and enjoying the community. I know everyone wishes her the best. I have taken over the chair of the Tracking Committee. We will be starting our new session September 11. I have sent out registration forms to those who have tracked during the spring session. If you are interested, please contact me. There is a short waiting list. This fall we will have two tracking tests. Both are advanced levels, Tracking Excellent and Variable Surface Tracking. Tracking Excellent occurs in a rural setting while Variable Surface Tracking occurs in an urban setting. On September 24, we will have our Tracking Excellent, TDX, test at Spring Creek Headwaters Forest Preserve, Wichman Road and Route 72, Barrington Hills, IL. I am one of the judges along with Ule James. The chair is Pat Duryea and the secretary is Sheryl Phelps. The premium is on our website. On October 8, we will have our Variable Surface Tracking, VST, test at Lincolnshire Corporate Center, 330 Knightsbridge Parkway, Lincolnshire, IL. Steve Ripley and I will be judging. The chair is Dee Morrison and the secretary is Carlos Santos. Please come and watch the tests to see what tracking is. Being chair or secretary of a tracking test takes time. I want to thank Pat Duryea, Sheryl Phelps, Dee Morrison, Carlos Santos as well as Diane Muzzey, Barb Pische and Barb Larsen for volunteering for these positions this year. Also, I thank all the tracklayers who give up part of their Saturday and Sunday so we can have these tests as well as those in charge of hospitality so we can have some nourishment. On a personal note, I now have regular status for all tracking tests! No more provisional status for me. On June 1, the AKC approved regular status for the VST tests for me, my last type of tracking test where I was a provisional judge. Lastly, on behalf of the entire tracking community, I wish Jerry Wulff a speedy recovery! He is a cornerstone of Rand Park tracking! Lois Leidahl-Marsh From the editor Remember, folks, Paw Prints is YOUR newsletter! Please send me your news and anything else that you think will be interesting to "dog people." Brags are mandatory! But remember, I can't use copyrighted material without permission. I want to continue the feature "the real reason why we own dogs" that was suggested by Dee Morrison. Send me your "reason" along with a photo. Send items for Paw Prints via to: randparkpawprints@live.com preferred - or by U.S. mail to: Ursula Hoeft 1814 Illinois Road Northbrook, IL Phone: Visit Rand Park's Website: randparkdtc.org

Rand Parkers have a lot to brag about! From Susan Habel My Jax achieved his PCDX with four qualifying legs with all second placements. One leg was at Rand Park trial. Jax also achieved a TT this spring. Jax now is RBIS U-Ch Intl Ch Dillon's Live For Today "Jax" PCDX CD BN RN RL2 ARCH CGC TKA TT Jax is the handsome dobe in the photo on the left. From Mary Dellorto Bliss won High in Trial and High Combined at the Winnebago Lab Specialty on June 17. Her scores were in Open B and in Utility B. Photo on left below: Bliss' collage picture from the National Obedience Championship in Perry, Ga. She ended up placing #22 out of 140 dogs after two days of competition. Photo on right below: Deja got her 2nd Utility leg at DeKalb KC on July 8, with a From Lori Buckley Banjo Oh'Suzannah earned his CGC and CGCA Paisley Bandana received her CGCA (she got her CGCA last year before we were members:) I also want to say a special shout-out to say thanks to our instructors over the past year they did a phenomenal job! They have a tireless and thankless job but my dogs have certainly seen Improvement and grown over the past years and that wouldn't have happened without quality instructors so thank you!

From Lin Hartnett Spring into summer was a very busy time for the Hartnett girls. We had many Conformation, Obedience and Fast Coursing Ability trials. Airecraft s New Chapter - Page was awarded Owner Handled Groups 1 and 3 at the Kennel Club of Yorkville Show on April 8th and 9th, followed by two Owner Handled Group 3 at the Fox Valley Kennel Club Show. Page then trialed at the Rank Park Dog Training Obedience Trial on April 29 and 30, earning legs two and three for her CD Title. On May 16th Page passed her CGCA Test at the Rand Park Dog Training Club. Then Page went on to the trial in Fast Cat at the Cudhay Kennel Club. Between May 27 and July 16 Page earned over 150 poiints for her BCat Title. Page tore up the course running 100 yards in 7.18 seconds for a speed of mph making her the fastest FastCat to date! Hartlin s First Edition- Parker did a great job in the Conformation Ring at the ACTI Specialty on June 17th. Parker was Best Puppy in Sweepstakes and Best Bred By Exhibitor. She is my first breeding so this was a very special award to me. Parker has also been working hard on her obedience training. She passed both the CGC and CGCA Tests on the same night at the Rand Park Dog Training Club on May 16th. Photos below: Page on left; Parker on right From Benita Theleen On June 10, Haddie earned her CD under Judge Joseph Caputo at the Dog Training Club of Champaign-Urbana. It is a great venue! The building was air conditioned while outside temps were in the mid-90's. It was another thrilling adventure with Ms. Haddie. Photo on right: Benita, Haddie, Judge Caputo

From JoAnn Neville Oliver earned his SE (UKC scentwork title - Superior Exterior) on July 8 at For Your K9. Oliver earned his AV (UKC scentwork title - Advanced Vehicle) on July 9 at For Your K9. Oliver earned his AN (UKC scentwork title Advanced Nosework all elements) on July 9 at For Your K9. From Kathy Baureis Skye passed her Nosework 2 Title at Channohan Aquatic Center. She searched 2 rooms, an exterior, containers, 2 cars and a boat in 2 minutes 39 seconds. She received second place on exteriors, 2 hides with a time of 39 seconds. She received a second place overall out of 45 dogs. I am so proud of her. She has great success in spite of her handler. Although we do continue to get a pronounced as a team at every trial. Kathy and Sky are in the photo on the left. Rain passed her Nosework 1 title at Channohan Aquatic Center as well. She searched an exterior, containers, 1 room and 2 cars and a trailer in 1 minute 29 seconds. She had to wear her fancy pants and go last being that she was in season which made for an interesting trial. I was so happy with her performance being that she is not that experienced. Rain is in the photo on the right. Introducing the newest member of the Krynski/Woepse household! Gus, a 9 y/o Smooth Fox Terrier, found himself in need of a new home when his human died of cancer. His human s ex-husband took him in but could not keep him so he turned to Fox Terrier Rescue for help. Since I have a soft spot for Smooth Fox Terriers, and an even softer spot for any dog who is homeless because of that horrible, evil disease, I agreed to foster him. The deal was, though, that he lived in Puerto Rico! His human did right by Gus and got him to Chicago. He joined our household in August of 2016 and got adopted, but was returned in three months for no valid reason. Based on his reaction, and the reaction of our dogs, he was HOME. So, He Ain t Stayin Either (aka Gus) is the newest member of the family. (Anyone who remembers the story of Shainy will get his name) Barb & Tom and Trixie, Zap, Bingo, Tori, Ralphie and now Gus

My Battle with PFSD (Post Fourth Stress Disorder) Or why I hate the Fourth of July! By Gustav zu Hoeft CD ( aka Gus) Let me start out by stating that I'm not a curmudgeon, a kill-joy, or a wet-blanket. I LOVE holidays! When I think about Christmas I see lots of presents, lots of company, lots of treats; Easter means an egg hunt (my nose gives me a big advantage over the kids!), helping mom with dinner (by tasting!), and treats; Thanksgiving is about good fellowship and good food who doesn't love turkey? But the Fourth of July is another story. It's my most unfavorite day of the year! I'm still feeling traumatized after this year's Independence Day celebration. I can understand that people wanted to make lots of noise by firing rifles, canons, whatever, when our country declared its independence on July 4, But that was over 300 years ago! Come on folks isn't it time to tone it down a little? For me this year was especially stressful. I'm still suffering from PFSD! Every noise still makes me jump and I only feel safe in dad's workshop at the far end of the basement! The day started badly. Early in the morning on the Fourth, before I'd even had breakfast, I spotted about a "million" people kids, adults, men, women dressed in shorts, all wearing the same color T-shirts with writing on them, running down the park district path across from our house. Some were running really fast. And they were making a lot of noise. Whatever scared them must have been pretty terrible. I barked! I figured my barking would get them to run faster it always works with the mailman. After lunch, and all too soon as far as I was concerned, it was time for the parade, a very long parade in Northbrook. They didn't want me to miss out on the fun, so mom and dad took me along to "enjoy" the parade with them. (Fun? Enjoy a parade? Not me! Mom and dad are nice people, but clueless sometimes when it comes to understanding my body language.) The parade was a nightmare of non-stop noise. There were the incredibly loud fire and police sirens, the deafening boom of rifles, and even a canon, fired by revolutionary war enactors, the not always melodic, but always loud music of the Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe Band, the other equally loud marching bands. I could go on, but you get the picture you've been to Fourth of July parades you know they're all about noise. Then there were the crowds, the little kids asking to pet me, running their sticky hands through my topknot as if my head were a wet wipe! Ugh! And through it all, I had to wear a flag-style kerchief around my neck. Not fun!. Especially not fun on a hot day for a dog that's got a thick coat of curly hair. Not only was I uncomfortable, I also felt ridiculous! After the parade, our street went into big time party mode which lasted for hours with crowds of people eating, drinking, adult beverages, too, and making noise, lots and lots of noise. By now, you've gotta know that I HATE noise! The day finally ended with a huge, very long, and very loud fireworks display in the park across the street from our house. Thank goodness mom and dad didn't make me sit outside with them to watch! I hid in the basement! I was convinced that war had been declared without anyone telling us and we were being bombed. The noise was deafening! I thought the house was going to fall down on us. It didn't, of course, or I wouldn't be writing this. I made it through another Fourth of July. In time, I'll get over my PFSD! But, for now, the basement is still my favorite part of the house.
