2 What s New and Interesting in Third Grade? Let s hear from Ms. Bubnis and Mrs. Grant s students! Ashley B.: In third grade, we learned a lot of new things in math. One thing I did was adding and subtracting really big numbers that go up to three digits! We learned different strategies to solve them, too. We also learned about division and multiplication number stories. That is interesting because now we know how to do all the different operations. Stephanie D.: I like writing this year because I get to write about things I know a lot about. I like it better than last year because I am learning and writing more. Samantha D.: In third grade, we did the Red Cup Tower. It is a STEM challenge and you have four or five red cups and you have to use a rubber band with strings tied onto it. Everybody at your table holds a string and then you stretch it out and put the rubber band over the cup. You have to build a tower and once you finish it, you can try to do it a little different way or a little faster. That s what my table did. We did it a different way. The Red Cup Tower Challenge was really fun. Olivia D.: In math, we are learning fact strategies. Fact strategies are a way to help you solve a hard problem. I learned that there are a lot of fact strategies like partial sums, column addition, adding up to subtract, and expand and trade subtraction. I like to use partial sums to add. I chose fact strategies because it s fun to work with big numbers. Udy E.: One interesting thing that I learned in third grade this year is how to play a recorder. A recorder is an instrument that you blow on the top and you put your finger on the holes. I think it is fun because you get to make music and it is exciting. Sean G.: In third grade, I learned a lot of cursive. Cursive is a fancy way to write your letters. Now we can even write words too! I think this is interesting because now I can write my name! John M.: In third grade, we are learning cooperation in P.E. The cooperation game is called Across the River. It taught us how to cooperate. We had to get everyone over to the other side of the gym without touching the ground. Julian D.: Science! I like the experiments because they are fun. Phoenix M.: In third grade we did S.T.E.M. challenges such as the Mayflower Challenge and Save Sammy the Gummy Worm. The Mayflower Challenge was a challenge where a group of four people design a boat. The boat had to sail a full yard with 61 pennies in the boat. When designing the boat with my team, I learned that it s always good to work as a team. The Save Sammy challenge was a challenge where you have to put Sammy the gummy worm back into a gummy lifesaver while using only a paper clip and a pencil, but you can t touch him. While doing this, I learned that you need a plan and a strategy for success. AJ P.: In third grade, we have been learning about cursive writing. Cursive is a kind of writing that adults use a lot. Cursive is fun because it looks really cool and soon everybody will learn how to do their signature in cursive. Also, everybody gets excited when we learn new letters in cursive. Tyler P.: In P.E., we learned a new game called Across the River. You have to get across the whole gym and you only have a scooter, jump rope, and a hockey stick. You have to use teamwork and it was so fun because we were on a scooter! Campbell U.: I really liked the Mayflower Challenge. It was fun and it was an activity. We made a boat and had to make it light. You can have a flag. You have to try to make it go across the sea. Instead of a sea, we used a plastic bin. Jaclyn V.: I like science this year. I like it because I got to pour water and sand together and it changed the color of the water, I get to work with cool things! Noah V.: In math, we learned how to use division. In division, you divide one number into groups and this year we learned that there are REMAINDERS! So if you divide an odd number by two, there will be a remainder. Remainders are fun and this is interesting because it makes your brain work hard. Allison Z.: In third grade, I learned a lot in Saving Sammy. It was a STEM challenge and the Save Sammy challenge is when Sammy, the person fell off his boat. We could not use our hands but there were tools we could use to get Sammy in his lifesaver and back on his boat. It was a hard but with a little teamwork we could do it. HAPPY JANUARY! Page 2 of 5

3 Joy Z.: In third grade, I learned so many things this year, but my most favorite thing I did was the Mayflower Challenge. The Mayflower Challenge is a fun activity where we made small boats out of certain materials but you have to make it strong enough to float with 61 pennies. The materials we had to use were tin foil, one piece of paper, four popsicle sticks, 2 plastic cups, and two straws. Then we put it in a huge container filled with water to see if it gets from one side to the other. I learned that you have to be wise with your choices and if something doesn t work, you have to change it. Noah A.: My favorite time in third grade was the time we did the Mayflower Challenge. We made a boat and tried to get to the end of the bin full of water. The Mayflower Challenge was a fun STEM activity. Alex A.: In science, we did the Mayflower Challenge. We had to build a boat with sixty-one pennies, tinfoil, paper, tape, and popsicle sticks. We did it to have fun and because it was around Thanksgiving time. We had to work with the other people at our table to solve the problem. Olivia B.: In third grade, we have learned a lot in art. We learned that Dale Chilhuly made glass sculptures. We are making ones too, but they are not glass. We made haunted houses, too. Ms. S. taught us lots of useful tips. Keep up the good work, Ms. S!!! Benjamin C.: Science is more interesting because now you get to play with dirt in our experiments. We are using the dirt to help us understand landforms and how they are made. Heidy D.: What I like about science is you get to experiment with stuff. Last year we did thing like bouncing balls and this year we get to do different experiments. It is harder but it is more fun! Mikey F.: In third grade, we learned multiplication facts. Also, we learned strategies, like column addition. It s really fun and easier to use then some other math strategies. Sydney G.: In third grade, we have enjoyed having STEM activities. We loved all of the activities, but one of our favorite experiments was Saving Sam the gummy worm. You could not use your hand or stab Sam with the paper clip. It was a hard and confusing experiment, but it was also a fun and cool experiment. Ayaan H.: In third grade, we did the Mayflower Challenge. It is so much fun. We got to make our own boats! The things we used were two cups, one sheet of tinfoil, one sheet of paper, two straws, and four popsicle sticks. We also got to use tape and scissors. Morgan H.: In third grade, I liked the Mayflower Challenge because it was fun to work with other people. It was so fun to build something and talk about it with other people. Julie L.: In third grade, I had fun doing the Mayflower Challenge. The Mayflower Challenge is basically a challenge that Mrs. Grant made up that you have to work together with your group mates to try to make a boat out of tinfoil, black construction paper, and five popsicle sticks. It needs to hold sixty-one pennies. We had straws to blow on it so the boat could sail from one side of a big tub to the other. Adnel L.: I liked the Mayflower Challenge in science because we got to make our own boats and put them in water. We then got to blow them away to the other side of the bucket. Seeret M.: One day, Mrs. Grant gave us a STEM mission. The mission was to put a gummy worm in a gummy lifesaver using only a pencil and two paper clips. Boy, was it fun! I hope you second graders enjoy the Saving Sam Challenge next year! Bianca O.: In third grade, I enjoyed the Mayflower Challenge. I like building with my friends and using different kinds of things and tools. It made me feel proud of myself. It was really fun and exciting. Madison R.: In third grade, we have done the Mayflower Challenge, which is where you have to build a boat using tinfoil, a piece of black paper, a straw, two popsicle sticks, and tape. You have to make a boat in one day and make sure that it floats and can hold sixtyone pennies. The pennies stand for the pilgrims who have to sail from the United Kingdom all the way to America. You have to use a straw to get the boat across. Whoever has the closest sail wins, but if it sinks all the way then you are out. Brett R.: My favorite thing in third grade was when we did the activity Saving Sam. It was our first science lesson and it was really, really, really fun! It was kind of hard, too. Gloria S.: I enjoyed learning about the Mayflower Challenge. We got to build the Mayflower and we had to put sixty-one pennies in the boat and put the boat in the water. Then we had to put on a timer and get the boat through to the other side. It was so weird because everyone tied at three seconds. If you sank the boat, you had to rebuild it. The materials were: four popsicle sticks, one piece of black paper, one piece of tinfoil, sixty-one pennies, two straws, one cup, and we got an extra straw to blow on to get the boat to the other side. Maricellie T.: In third grade, we did the challenges Saving Sam and the Mayflower Challenge in science. We also learned column addition in math. HAPPY JANUARY! Page 3 of 5

4 In the District Board of Education meetings: Thursdays, January 5 & 19, 8pm East Brunswick Education Foundation meetings: Wednesdays, January 18, and February 15, 7:30pm Harlem Wizards vs. EB's Favorite Teachers! The East Brunswick Education Foundation is hosting a special event! The Harlem Wizards are coming to town to take on some of East Brunswick's favorite teachers. The basketball game will take place on Sunday, January 29th, The fun will start at 3:00 PM at Churchill Junior High School. Buy tickets online at The proceeds from this event will go to the EBEF. Family STEAM Night Bowne-Munro will be hosting a Family STEAM Night (Science, Technology & Math) on February The event will run from 7:00 PM 8:15 PM. During the evening, students will rotate through a series of hands-on mathematical and scientific explorations and activities. There will be more information to come as the night draws nearer.
