5 Conformation Ted Harris, UK Introducing our Judges You will likely find Ted and his terriers in the show results on The Crawley and Horseman Hunt website but, for the first time, you will find him judging in the ring of this year s JRTCC National Trial! Having worked terriers for more than thirty-five years, Ted Harris, from the south of England, skillfully identifies the best of conformation, movement and temperament. A respected terrierman with both Jack Russell and Lakeland Terriers, he can boast being at the top of every major terrier show in England, including the Radley International, Greater Yorkshire, Stoneleigh International and the JRTCGB National with his Brockton Terriers. Deciding which terriers most closely match the breed standard, Ted has judged the National Jack Russell Terrier shows of Germany, Sweden and South Africa, the Patterdale National Terrier Show of the United States and the International Terrier Show at Stoneleigh. There can be no doubt that Ted is committed to keeping the working aspects of the Jack Russell Terrier in the forefront and that he will share his knowledge and expertise during the course of our trial. We extend to him our sincere thanks for spending time with us and for adjudicating our terriers in Paris ON. Welcome to Canada, Ted! Racing Dean Stewart, CAN A JRTCC Director, and Chairperson of the Judges Committee, Dean may likely attribute his involvement in the Club to his first JRT, Chaos! Like many of us who realize our terriers have to be kept busy, Dean keenly observed the trial scene, became an active participant and decided to complete the requirements to become certified as a JRTCC Go-To-Ground Judge and subsequently as a Racing Judge. Dean s teaching instinct kicks in whenever questions find him and he s always there to provide advice to handlers, judging apprentices and inquiring onlookers. Dean has been judging in the JRTCC for many years and he also ensures that applications for JRTCC Hunting and Trial Certificates are processed. When teamed with his wife, Kelley, on the PA system, the racing event is bound to be kept on the go! So to all, remember to run to the catchers area to get your jack because Dean will be watching! The JRTCC is very pleased that Dean will once again take on this speedy event at our National Trial! Go To Ground Rob Mahon, CAN Although we know that the Mahon s first JRT, Becky, had found her calling in Agility, it was their JRT Woodley that led Rob, Debbie, Becky and JRT Splash into the tunnels (so to speak!) of Go-To-Ground! Eventually, the standard length of tunnel and turn just wouldn t be enough for any of them. Their back yard now boasts configured tunnels and numerous turns to provide a workout to be envied! Rob and his wife Debbie are JRTCC members and very dedicated to providing earthwork opportunities both within and outside the Club. Their workshops have informed many owners and have led many a hesitant terrier to the ground. Rob is the builder of our tunnel forms, plus many others, and he also sits on the JRTCC Judges Committee. Both Rob and Debbie are true Jack Russell owners/lovers willing to go the extra lengths to challenge their terriers and the rest of ours too! The Club is very pleased that Rob, a certified JRTCC Go To Ground Judge, will be reviewing our terriers at this year s JRTCC National Trial! 5

6 Agility Sharon Dunsmore, CAN Sharon Dunsmore was educated as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for Critical Care Units but she has now left nursing and has slowly changed her long time hobby with dogs into a large successful business. A professional dog trainer for the past 20 years, Sharon currently runs K9 Klubhouse Behavioral Consultation and Dog Training. She organizes and runs about 7-9 Agility Trials per year and is a CKC and AAC Agility Judge. For the past 25 years Sharon has been breeding, showing and playing in various dog sports with her Bearded Collies and she has a huge interest in the many issues that face reputable breeders today. She tells us she s looking forward to meeting our agility JRTs! The JRTCC is sure that the feeling is mutual, and warmly welcomes Sharon once again as Agility Judge to our National Trial! Trailing & Locating and Super Earth Joe Shapiro, USA The JRTCC is delighted that Joe has agreed, once again, to make the trip north from our sister club, the JRTCA, to assume judging responsibilities! This year you ll find Joe at two sites Trailing & Locating and Super Earth. Joe grew up in northeast Indiana and, from an early age, recognized his enjoyment of dogs. Returning to Indiana in 1996, he and his wife, Brooks, acquired their first Jack Russell Terrier. We all know that our jacks are born to hunt and, sure enough, soon after, Joe went hunting in Ohio. he was hooked on these little dogs! So began a family kennel which would raise JRTs for conformation and working. Joe admits that he loves to see the dogs work, fostering his decision to become a certified JRTCA working judge. He s been working jacks for over 13 years and has hunted all over the USA. His biggest thrill? To witness a novice terrier go into the field and begin to work the quarry. He notes that the terrier and the owner emerge closer to each other after the challenge. Joe, like many of us, has made many good friends from his terrier experiences. The JRTCC is sure he ll make many more at our 2010 JRTCC National Trial! High Jumping and Ball Retrieval Nick Pelych, CAN Nick is a terrier owner who strives to be acutely aware of what his own terriers can, or cannot, do. He is also one to take a good look at all terriers in action and offer advice to handlers if he feels it would be helpful in these particular events. At the sites for High Jumping and Ball Retrieval, Nick doesn t hesitate to provide suggestions within the rules because he wants each terrier/owner to perform optimally as a team! Nick s involvement with the JRTCC goes back many years. Over this time he has entered his terriers in these two events, among others. With his well tuned observation skills, we re pleased that Nick will once again join us to assume the duties of judge for these events which, he maintains, foster important team strategies through fun experiences! 6

7 Barn Hunt Krystyna Brooks, CAN On one occasion in the USA, Krystyna discovered that the Barn Hunt event is a test of both handler and jack, much like a real hunting situation. The need for interaction between the two became very obvious, and the reward was that sense of accomplishment as her dogs located and marked that one tube containing the quarry. Krystyna maintains that a weekend at a trial with her active dogs is the best it gets! She has been involved with JRTs for a number of years now and she sits on the JRTCC Board of Directors as well as the Judges Committee. Krystyna understands the needs of our type of terrier, has hosted several JRTCC sanctioned trials and is a JRTCC certified Racing Judge. She and her husband, Bill, share their already busy household with their active jacks and they also ensure that our trial has a good supply of hay bales! Thank you, Krystyna, for facilitating the Barn Hunt opportunity at our JRTCC National Trial! Lure Coursing Gord Speares, CAN Gord s involvement with the JRTCC and its affiliate, the Jack Russell Terrier Rescue of Ontario (JRTRO), has continued to grow steadily. He has had a wide range of experiences with Jack Russell Terriers, both his own and the rescue JRTs he and his family foster regularly in their home. Gord is a certified JRTCC Racing Judge and member of the JRTCC Judges Committee. For Sunday s performance event, Gord will be tracking the speed, line and focus of our terriers as they race in the open field, doing their utmost to track, catch and devour that little white quarry! Our judge will be very busy because, without doubt, Fun Lure Coursing for practice and the actual Lure Coursing competition are regarded as exciting draws for both owners and terriers when offered at events, including our National Trial! We thank Gord for overseeing the Fun Lure Coursing and judging this year s Lure Coursing division. Brush Hunt Bill Brooks, CAN Bill is a volunteer firefighter with the Town of St. George, ON and has been involved with Jack Russell Terriers for 5.5 years. He has also been one of our unassuming JRTCC volunteers for five years! Being in the construction industry, it may explain why he can be seen hauling this and that to and from an event/trial site. What would we do without those hay bales!! Bill is presently apprenticing to be a Racing Judge with the JRTCC and he seemingly likes the speed factor because he often substitutes for his wife, Krystyna, at flyball events with their JRT Mischief. It s no surprise that his other favorite things to do with their JRTs are Go To Ground and Lure Coursing. Bill has agreed to slow down his pace at this year s JRTCC National Trial and he ll be waiting for you and your terriers in the brush as he assumes the role of Judge in an event relatively new for us Brush Hunt. Trial Relief Judge Dan Stewart, CAN He is a member of the Canadian Forces (Corporal, Army Reservist) and now has the distinction of being the JRTCC s youngest qualified racing judge! Dan was JRTCC Junior Handler in 2004 and has been a JRT owner for two years, but he has been on the Club scene and a presence at racing for more than eleven years. He started as a lure boy at age 11 and learned the ropes on his way up! Whether at the start box, or demonstrating proficiency in the catching pen, Dan is carrying on the Stewart Family tradition at the JRT race track, and also setting a fine example for youth competitors. The JRTCC congratulates Dan on his upcoming marriage later this year and is proud to welcome him as the Trial Relief Judge, filling in as required for divisions at this year s JRTCC National Trial. 7
