NEVER GIVE UP! Dorothy never stopped trying to get home even when the Wicked Witch of the West sent flying monkeys after her. So when the going gets tough, stick to your yellow brick road and you ll overcome your obstacles too. 2. GOOD FRIENDS COME IN THE UNLIKELIEST PLACES! Though the Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion aren t the typical staples in your posse, these three friends always had Dorothy s back. Don t pass on a possible friend because they re different than you. 3. NEVER STOP DREAMING! Dorothy s trip to Oz was difficult, but she still found a place over the rainbow. After singing about a magical land, she found it and that means you should never stop dreaming about yours. 4. YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH ANTHING! The Scarecrow wanted a brain. The Tin Man wanted a heart, and the Lion wanted to be brave. Even though they thought they had to ask the Wizard to grant their wishes, they found those traits inside themselves. 5. REAL COURAGE IS FACING YOUR FEARS! The Lion best represented this when he put aside his own fears to help his friends. 6. THERE S NO PLACE LIKE HOME! You don t need emerald cities or ruby slippers. Everything you need is waiting for you. RIGHT AT HOME! There s No Place Like Home. There s No Place Like Home...

Advise from the Wizard... We all face adversity at different times in our lives. Some of us cope well, while others may have great difficulty. I always find myself coming out of any difficult situation, even better and stronger than before. There is always a rainbow after a storm! Beauty from ashes, and light after dark! WHA Board of Commissioners The Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority of the Township of Woodbridge did not have any meetings in July 2017, therefor, no resolutions passed. NEXT SCHEDULED MEETING Thursday Sept. 7, 2017 Finn Towers 19 Martin Terrace, Woodbridge ATTENTION: Woodbridge Garden Apartment Residents The rent drop off box has been moved to the Garage office behind Bldg. #10. Please place your rent in the rent box as opposed to dropping it off at the office. Thank you! I think that it s in the attitude that I try and keep while going through the rough periods. Of course at first the shock of the situation flares my emotions up, like many of us, you go through a period of disbelief, and uneasiness. We all have expectations, and sometimes when those expectations are not met, we feel an enormous sense of disappointment. Letting out a good cry in private can help release the build up of emotions. This is normal and I feel shouldn t be suppressed. Once the initial shock is over, I try and look for the positive in the difficult situation. I learn a lot about myself, and I also learn a lot about others. There s always a lesson for me that takes me to another level in my life and refines me as a human being. I feel that bad situations and events, are not always necessarily bad. If I didn t go through these bad periods in my life, I would never have the chance to learn about myself and become a better and stronger person. These trying times gives me the opportunity to grow and take inventory in the person that I am, the person I would like to become, and the person that I was. Remember we can change things within ourselves only. We cannot change others, and the way they treat us. We have to accept this in order to grow. Life is certainly like a rollercoaster. Some parts are horrifying, some are exciting, some turns make you laugh and elate you, while other turns make you cry. Sometimes your up, and sometimes down, and on occasion you can be upside down! It s all about your attitude before you get on that ride! If you go on believing you will make it through taking the good with the bad, then at the end of the ride you will look back with excitement and life in your eyes. Don t ever give up! Things that may seem IMPOSSIBLE, are always POSSIBLE!

7 Page 7 September 2017 TOWERS & GARDENS Memorial for Toto from The Wizard of Oz Canine movie star, Carl Spitz spent many years in Hollywood not only readying dogs for films but also training Dogs for Defense during World War II. Among his movie-star pupils was the female Carin Terrier who played Dorothy s male dog, Toto, in The Wizard of Oz. He was the innovator of training animals to react and perform by using silent hand signals to direct the animal. These hand signals were instrumental in directing Toto during the filming of the movie. The dog was one of many in a kennel he maintained in the Hollywood area which also was the site of a school for other trainers. The dog was simply abandoned at Spitz s kennel four years before the movie The Wizard of Oz was made and was given the name Terry. Carl was a German immigrant and became a legend in his profession while training many canine stars who ultimately appeared in classic films. His biggest claim to fame was Terry. The little dog made almost a dozen movies in her life with stars such as Shirley Temple and Spencer Tracy. Terry and her trainer made many guest appearances after gaining fame in the movie at community events, fairs and animal shows. The dog died toward the end of World War II and was buried in a pet burial area behind the Spitz s residence and kennel. During the expansion of the Ventura Freeway in Los Angeles, the property was obtained by CalTrans for construction purposes. The facility and the small burial grounds were destroyed. 11 Page 11 TOWERS & GARDENS September 2017 Facts About Tornados Tornados are a dangerous force of nature. With winds of over 350 Kilometers (over 200 miles) per hour, tornadoes can flatten houses and lift cars off the ground. Tornados form in the clouds of severe thunderstorms when warm air from the south meets cold air from the north. Inside the thunderstorm, fast winds flow over slow ones creating a horizontal tube of swirling air. When that tube tilts down toward the ground, a funnel cloud is formed. Funnel clouds can be nearly invisible but as they touch the ground, a tornado is formed. The tornado stirs up dust and debris it is the dirt inside the tornado that makes it the angry dark colour we re so used to seeing in pictures or videos. The flying debris is the most dangerous part of a tornado to people. Tornados form on every continent in the world except for Antarctica, but the most common place for them is in the United States. The warm winds from the Gulf of Mexico meet the cold winds from the Rocky Mountains over an area of the United States referred to as Tornado Alley which encompasses the states of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. This is where we find the most tornados in the world. Tornados are classified using the Fujita Scale between F0 and F5 based on the damage they cause. F0 tornados aren t very dangerous they just stir up dust and break a few tree limbs. F5 tornados are potentially deadly, destroying houses, lifting cars and causing damage to towns and cities that can take years to repair.

12 Page 12 TOWERS & GARDENS September 2017 From the Executive Director The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Quotes By L. Frank Baum There is no place like home. A heart is not judged by how much you love; but by how much you are loved by others Now I know I have a heart because it is breaking A baby has brains, but it doesn t know much. Experience is the only thing that brings knowledge, and the longer you are on earth, the more experience you are sure to get. True courage is in facing danger when you are afraid For I consider brains far superior to money in every way. You may have noticed that if one has money without brains, he cannot use it to his advantage; but if one has brains without money, they will enable him to live comfortably to the end of his days. and remember my sentimental friend, that a heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others. I am Oz, the Great and Terrible, spoke the Beast, in a voice that was one great roar. Who are you, and why do you seek me? Follow your Yellow Brick Road Like a BOSS!
