Uncle Henry is sweeping and Aunt Em is sitting on box counting to herself. Kansas Dorothy: Oh Jeepers! My heart s thumping so loud. Did she hurt you? She tried to, didn t she? Let s go tell Uncle Henry and Auntie Em. They ll take care of her. Come on Toto. (K. Dorothy runs over to Aunt Em.) 1 Kansas Dorothy: Aunt Em! Aunt Em! Aunt Em: Fifty-seven, Fifty eight--- Kansas Dorothy: Just listen to what Miss Gultch did to Toto! She--- Aunt Em: Dorothy, please! We re trying to count! Fifty-nine--- Kansas Dorothy: Oh, but Aunt Em, she hit him--- Uncle Henry: Don t bother us now honey. Aunt Em: Sixty. Dorothy, we re very busy. Uncle Henry: I have to finishing sweeping the barn and then we have to move these chicks. Aunt Em: There is a lot to do, so why don t you quit worrying about Toto and give us a hand. (K. Dorothy Runs over to Uncle Henry) Kansas Dorothy: Uncle Henry. Can t you do something? Uncle Henry: I m doing something right now honey. So just keep out of our hair. (He exits) Aunt Em: Now Dorothy, you just help us out today and find yourself a place where you won t get into any trouble. (She exits) (K. Dorothy moves Down Center Stage.) Kansas Dorothy: Some place where there isn t any trouble I wonder if there is such a place, Toto? There must be. Not a place you can get to by a boat or a train. It s far, far away behind the moon beyond the rain. Somewhere over the rainbow!. Dorothy exits.

2 SCENE 2 Uncle Henry: (Runs onstage yelling) Hurry up and get them horses loose! It s a twister and it s heading straight for us! Aunt Em: (enters ) Dorothy! Dorothy! Uncle Henry: You ain t found her yet? Aunt Em: She s somewhere out in the storm! Dorothy! Dorothy! Uncle Henry: Come on, get in the storm cellar. Aunt Em: We can t leave her out here, Henry. Uncle Henry: There s nothing we can do, Em. (Both Uncle Henry and Aunt Em exit) (Dorothy enters) Dorothy: Auntie Em! Auntie Em! Where is everybody? What happened? Lights go down slightly. Play Transformation Music / Tornado SFX (At this point Kansas Dorothy is spinning in place. From Stage Right out comes ALL OZ characters and form a tornado circle around Kansas Dorothy. Oz Dorothy is in the line and switches spots with Kansas Dorothy, who gives Toto to Oz Dorothy. Then ALL OZ characters and Kansas Dorothy exit in a line. Oz Dorothy falls to the ground.) SCENE 3 Lights are fully up. Oz Dorothy: Toto I have a feeling we re not in Kansas anymore. We must be over the rainbow! (OZ Dorothy looks around) 2 Dorothy: (points offstage) Toto, look, our house made it through the tornado too! (Glinda enters and sneaks up on Dorothy) Glinda: Are you a good witch, or a bad witch? Dorothy: (startled) Who, me? I m I m not a witch at all. I m Dorothy Gale, from Kansas. Glinda: Oh! Well, is that the witch? (she points at Toto) Dorothy: Who, Toto? Toto s my dog. (Glinda guides Dorothy to Center Stage.) Glinda: Well, I m a little confused. The Munchkins called me because a new witch has just dropped a house on the Wicked Witch of the East. And so, what the Munchkins want to know is, are you a good witch or a bad witch? Dorothy: But I ve already told you, I m not a witch at all. Witches are old and ugly. (Munchkins laugh from behind platform.) Dorothy: What was that? Glinda: The Munchkins. They re laughing because I am a witch. I m Glinda, the Witch of the North. Dorothy: You are! I beg your pardon! But I ve never heard of a beautiful witch before. Glinda: Only bad witches are ugly. (Munckins laugh again). Glinda: The Munchkins are happy because you have freed them from the Wicked Witch of the East.

3 Dorothy: Oh, what are Munchkins? Glinda: The little people who live in this land. This is Munchkin Land. It s all right you may all come out and thank her. (Munchkins come out from behind platform singing the following as they walk over to Glinda and Dorothy) ALL MUNCHKINS: (singing) Ding Dong! The Witch is dead. Which old Witch? The Wicked Witch! Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is dead! Wake up you sleepy heads, rub your eyes, get out of bed. Ding Dong the Wicked Witch is dead! Mayor steps forward toward Dorothy. Mayor: As Mayor of the Munchkin City, I welcome you to the Land of Oz. Mopsi (Munchkin 1): But we have to make sure that the witch is dead. Ojo (Munchkin 2): Which, witch? Kiki (Munchkin 3): The Wicked Witch! Mopsi (Munchkin 1): And here are her ruby slippers! Munchkins help put ruby slippers on Dorothy s feet. Mayor: This is a day of independence! (All Munchkins cheer and dance around Dorothy. In the midst of rejoicing there is a loud explosion, the Munchkins huddle together around Dorothy in fear. Glinda stands in the huddle not scared at all. the Wicked Witch appears on a broom and circles around the Munchkins and Dorothy. They all huddle even closer together. The munchkins crouch around Dorothy s feet.) 3 Mopsi (Munchkin 1): The witch! Mayor: Quick, run! Dorothy: I thought you said she was dead. (Wicked Witch stops spinning around the huddle and stops on on side of the huddle, the opposite side of Glinda.) Glinda: That was her sister the Wicked Witch of the East. This is the Wicked Witch of the West. And she s worse than the other one was. West Witch: Where s my sister? Glinda: She s under that house (she points to offstage ). West Witch: Alright, who turned her into a house? Was it you Glinda? (West Witch crosses over to Glinda.) Glinda: Not the house. Under the house. West Witch: Under the house? Dorothy: (still in a huddle) It s my fault. I m so sorry. My house dropped on her. West Witch: You dropped your house on my sister? How could anyone be so mean? Ojo (Munchkin 2): She didn t mean to. Witch: Quiet you! Wait, the ruby slippers. Give them back to me or I ll--- Glinda: It s too late. Dorothy already slipped them on her feet. West Witch: Give me back those slippers. I m the only one that knows how to use them. Give them back! Give them back!

4 (The Munchkins and Dorothy crouch and huddle) Glinda: (turn toward Dorothy) Keep tight inside of them. Their magic must be very powerful or she wouldn t want them so badly. West Witch: You stay out of this, Glinda, or I ll fix you as well. Glinda: Oh, fiddle-faddle! You have no power while I m here. Be gone, before somebody drops a house on you, too! West Witch: Very well. But I ll get those slippers. I ll get you, my pretty and your little dog, too! (Gets on her broom and makes a big loop around the stage and exits) Glinda: It s all right. You can get up. She s gone. (Munchkins and Dorothy get up.) Kiki (Munchkin 3): I m glad she s gone. Mayor: She is the wicky-est witch of them all! Mopsi (Munchkin 1): Did you see her fly around on that broomstick? Ojo (Munchkin 2): I couldn t believe it! Glinda: You must find your way back home now Dorothy Dorothy: But which is the way back to Kansas? I can t go the way I came. Glinda: No, that s true. You ll have to go see the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy: The Wizard of Oz? Is he good, or is he wicked? Glinda: Oh, he s good. Mayor: He lives in Emerald City. Glinda: Did you bring your broom. Dorothy: No I m afraid I didn t. Glinda: Well, then, You ll have to walk. And remember, never take those ruby slippers off of your feet. Dorothy: But---how do I start for the Emerald City? Glinda: Just follow the Yellow Brick Road. (she exits ) ALL Munchkins: (waving toward Glinda) Goodbye, Glinda! Goodbye! (Munchkins line up. Dorothy at end of the line. Munchkins hold out hand in direction of yellow brick road when they say their line.) Mopsi (Munchkin 1): Just follow the Yellow Brick Road. Ojo (Munchkin 2): Follow the Yellow Brick Road. Kiki (Munchkin 3): Follow the Yellow Brick Road. Dorothy: Follow the Yellow Brick Road. ALL Munchkins: (sing) You re off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz. Goodbye Dorothy! Goodbye! Munchkins exit Dorothy exits Scarecrow enters and stands on a stage box SCENE 4 Dorothy walks in Dorothy: (Facing the audience, away from Scarecrow) Well now, which way do we go? 4

5 Scarecrow: (Points toward SL) Pardon me. That way is a very nice way. (Freezes in that position as Dorothy turns.) (Dorothy turns back toward audience.) Scarecrow: (points in different direction and freeze) It s nice down that way too. Dorothy: (Looks at Scarecrow) That s funny. Wasn t he pointing the other way? Scarecrow: Of course, people do go both ways! (he crosses his arms and points in both directions) Dorothy: Why, you did say something, didn t you? Scarecrow: I did. Or maybe I didn t. I haven t got a brain, only straw. So I don t know. Dorothy: Well, how can you talk if you haven t got a brain? Scarecrow: I don t know. But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don t they? Dorothy: Yes, I guess you re right. Scarecrow: (Jumping off box, walking DS) But.. I can t even scare a crow. Oh, if I only had a brain I could think up a way to scare those crows. Dorothy: Maybe you could come with me and ask the Wizard for a brain. Scarecrow: Wow, that is a really good idea. You are very smart. Hurrah, I m going to get a brain! Dorothy: To Oz! Scarecrow: To Oz! Dorothy and Scarecrow: (both link arms and sing) We re off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz! (Both exit) Tin Man comes in and freezes on top of stage box) SCENE 5 (Dorothy and Scarecrow enter. They stop and see Tin Man) Dorothy: Look over there Scarecrow it s a man made of tin! Scarecrow: How did you ever get like this? Tin Man: The Wicked Witch of the West put a spell on me. Dorothy: That s terrible. Tin Man: The worst part is, she didn t put a heart in. Dorothy & Scarecrow: No heart? Tin Man: No heart. (he cries) Dorothy: Oh, please don t cry Tin Man. You ll rust. Scarecrow: Why don t you come with us to the Emerald City and ask the Wizard of Oz for a heart. Tin Man: Suppose the Wizard wouldn t give me one when we got there? Dorothy: Oh, but he will. We ve gone a long way. Tin Man: Then lets be on our way! Dorothy: To Oz! Scarecrow: To Oz! 5 Tin Man: To Oz!

6 All Three: (all three link arms and sing) We re off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz! (they exit) Lion enters and hides behind box) SCENE 6 (Dorothy, Scarecrow and Tin Man enter) Dorothy: I don t like this forest! Scarecrow: Do you think there are any animals in here. Tin Man: Some. Maybe lions, and tigers and bears. Dorothy: Lions! Scarecrow: And tigers! Tin Man: And bears! Dorothy: Lions, and tigers and bears! Oh my! (The Lion pops out from behind the box and jumps up on platform and gives a loud roar) Lion: ROARRRRR! Scarecrow: Look! (Scarecrow and Tin Man crouch in fear) Lion: Hah! Put em up! Put em up! Which one of you first? I ll fight you both together if you want. (goes toward Scarecrow) I ll fight ya with one paw tied behind my back! (Goes toward Tin Man) I ll fight ya standin on one foot! I ll fight ya with my eyes closed! (Dorothy goes to Lion and hits him on the paw) Dorothy: Oh, shame on you! Lion: (whining/crying) What did you do that for? I didn t bite him. Dorothy: No, but you tried to. Lion: Well, you didn t have to go and hit me, did you? Is my nose bleedin? (Tin Man and Scarecrow stand up) Tim Man: You re just a big coward. Lion: You re right, I am a coward. I even scare myself. Scarecrow: Don t you think the Wizard could help him, too? Dorothy: Maybe. Tin Man: Do you want to come with us to see the Wizard? Dorothy: He could give you some courage. Lion: At least I ll be safe if I come with you. Dorothy: Well then, to Oz! All: (all link arms and sing) We re off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz! (All exit) (All Ozians enter to positions in front of gate) SCENE 7 (All four enter) Scarecrow: Look, the Emerald City. 6

7 Dorothy: Have you ever seen anything so beautiful? Lion: It s beautiful. Gatekeeper: Who goes there?! Allegro (Ozian 1): State your business. Tinman: We want to see the Wizard. Jinjur (Ozian 2): But nobody can see the great Oz! Ianu (Ozian 3): Nobody s ever seen the great Oz! Dorothy: Well then how do you know there is one? Gatekeeper: HA HA HA! Foolish girl! Tell her, Allegro. Allegro (Ozian 1): Because, because, because, because, because if there wasn t a Wizard um why would you be here? Dorothy: But, the Good Witch of the North sent me. Jinjur (Ozian 2): Prove it! Scarecrow: (points to slippers) She s wearing the Ruby Slippers she gave her. Gatekeeper: Such beautiful slippers! Ianu (Ozian 3): Why didn t you say that in the first place? That s a horse of a different color! Allegro (Ozian 1): Welcome to Emerald City. You have no idea how wonderful this place truly is. Jinjur (Ozian 2): You will find your brain, heart, and courage here. Have no fear! 7 Dorothy: It s everything you said it was and more. Scarecrow: When do we get to see the Wizard? Tin Man: Will you take us to him? Lion: Is he scary? Ianu (Ozian 3): The Wizard? He s a little scary. Gatekeeper: He s the most powerful wizard in all the land! Allegro (Ozian 1): The Wizard is this way Jinjur (Ozian 2): This way, this way, step right up. Ianu (Ozian 3): Step right up, the great Oz awaits you. Gatekeeper: Follow us, follow us! We ll take you to see the wonderful wizard of Oz! Lion: Tell me when it s over. (he puts his hands over his face) Dorothy: Oh, come on Lion, we ll be scared together. All the characters exit. Oz enters and stansd on top of platform The four leads surround platform on ground with backs facing audience SCENE 8 The Ozians bring the 4 leads and line them up across the stage with their backs facing the audience looking at the wizard who is upstage center. Ozians stand on either side of wizard. ALL Ozians: All hail Oz! The great and powerful!

8 Oz: I am Oz, the great and powerful. Who are you? Who are you? Dorothy: (Turn toward audience) I am Dorothy, we ve come to ask you Oz: Silence! Dorothy: Ohh- Jiminy Crickets! Oz: The Great and Powerful Oz knows why you have come. Step forward Tin Man! Tin Man: (Steps forward) Ohhhh! Oz: You dare to come to me for a heart, do you? Tin Man: Yes, you see we were walking down the Yellow Brick Oz: QUIET! Tin Man: Ohhh! (Steps back) Oz: And you, Scarecrow, you want a brain. Scarecrow: Yes, your Wizardness. Oz: Enough! And you Lion WELL!!!!!!!! (the Lion faints, Dorothy runs to him) Dorothy: Oh oh oh! (she looks angrily at Oz) Why are you so mean, he just wanted your help! Oz: Silence! I will help you. Lion: What s that? What d he say? Dorothy: He s going to help. 8 Oz: But first you have to help me. Bring me the broomstick of the Wicked Witch of the West. Lion: But but what if she kills us first? Oz: I said GO!!!!!!!! ALL Ozians: The wizard has spoken! Now GO!!!!! (Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion exit Oz and Ozians exit Monkeys enter and act like statues.) SCENE 9 (Each enter to DSC as they are saying their line. They don t see the Monkeys) Lion: (Enters, looking around lost) Does anyone know where any of us are? Scarecrow: (enters) We passed a notice a while back. Tin Man: (enters) You mean the one that said Welcome To The Haunted Forest. Scarecrow: No, no. The one that said If you ve gotten this far, you re lost! Lion: That was just after I d Turn Back If I Were You (The Monkeys start moving, getting ready to attack) Dorothy: (enters) What s happening? Lion: (points towards Monkeys) Look at the size of them birds! Dorothy: They re not birds, they re monkeys. ALL Monkeys: Look out Dorothy, we re coming to get you! (Monkeys spin around group.)

9 Tin Man: Go away! (The Monkeys scare Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Lion. They fall to the ground) Scarecrow: Help! Help! (They Monkeys grab Dorothy) Lion: They re taking Dorothy. Dorothy: Help! Help Me! (Monkeys exit with Dorothy) (Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Lion stand up) Tin Man: We need to go find Dorothy! Scarecrow: That s right. And the Lion will lead us! Lion: Yeah! Me? Tin Man: Yes, you. Lion: All right, I ll do it for Dorothy Wicked Witch or no Wicked Witch Monkeys or no monkeys. There s only one thing I want you fellows to do. Tin Man & Scarecrow: What s that? Lion: Talk me out of it. (Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion exit West Witch enters and sits on stage box.) SCENE 10 (Monkeys enter) Nikko (Monkey 1): We brought the girl miss Wicked Witch. 9 Skippy (Monkey 2): And we brought her little dog too. Xigo (Winged Monkey 3): Wait where is she? Quelala (Winged Monkey 4): We just had her a second ago (Monkeys look around in place) Witch: You lost her? Nikko (Monkey 1): I don t hear her. Skippy (Monkey 2): I don t see her. Xigo (Winged Monkey 3): I can t even talk about her. Quelala (Winged Monkey 4): Oh, wait we set her down over here. (Goes offstage and then enters right away with Dorothy) Nikko (Monkey 1): It s tough to fly when you re carrying a girl. Xigo (Winged Monkey 3): And a little dog too. West Witch: (Gets up and starts walking away) This way my dear. I hope you had a nice flight. (The monkeys drag Dorothy and follow the Witch) Dorothy: (say to monkeys) What are you going to do with Toto? Skippy (Monkey 2): She ll probably have us drop him in the river. Quelala (Winged Monkey 4): Or drop him off a cliff. Nikko (Monkey 1): Or even better, a mountain!!! (ALL monkeys laugh) West Witch: (Stop and turn toward Dorothy) It will be the river if you don t hand over the slippers.

10 Dorothy: I don t want them just give me back Toto. West Witch: That s the good little girl. (Witch tries to touch slippers) Owww! Owww! Skippy (Monkey 2): Oohhh, that looked like it hurt. Witch: Here take the dog and go. Xigo (Winged Monkey 3): Yes ma am. Whatever you say ma am! Quelala (Winged Monkey 4): Right away, ma am! (Monkeys exit) West Witch: I ll get some tools to help get those shoes off your feet! Dorothy: How can anyone be so nasty, mean and cruel? Witch: Lots and lots of practice. (she exits, doing her evil laugh) (Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion enter from. They hug Dorothy) Scarecrow: Dorothy, we found you! Lion: Are you alright? Dorothy: Yes, I m fine. Tin Man: Hurry, we ve got no time to lose! (Wicked Witch and Monkeys enter) Witch: Going so soon? Get them Monkeys. (Monkeys surround Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion) Lion: I think we ve outstayed our welcome. Witch: Now, how about a little fire, scarecrow. 10 Scarecrow: No! Help! West Witch: Too late Scarecrow! You re all burned up! Dorothy: No (the Witch stops and turns toward her) West Witch: What? Dorothy: I won t let you! (Dorothy snatches up the water bucket and throws it at the witch s broom, it douses the witch as well) West Witch: (screams) Ohhhh! You cursed brat! Look what you ve done. (The Witch stands behind stage box. She places broom on stage box) West Witch: I m melting! Melting! Oh, what a world! What a world! Who would have thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness? Ohhh---ohhh (She slowly crouches down behind stage box out of sight) Nikko (Monkey 1): I think she s dead... Quelala (Winged Monkey 4): You ve killed her. Xigo (Winged Monkey 3): Hail to Dorothy! The Wicked Witch is dead! ALL Monkeys: Hail to Dorothy! The Wicked Witch is Dead! Skippy (Monkey 2): You are now our queen. (The Monkeys bow at Dorothy s feet) Dorothy: Oh, that s very kind of you. But I have to get back to Kansas. Can we have the witch s broom? Skippy (Monkey 2): Please. Take it with you. Dorothy: (grabs broom off platform) Oh, thank you so much.

11 ALL Monkeys: The Wicked Witch is dead!! (The Monkeys cheer and exit ) SCENE 11 (Oz enters and steps atop the stage box. Ozians enter and stand on either side of Oz) ALL Ozians: All hail Oz! The great and powerful! Oz: Step forward if you dare. Why have you come back? Dorothy: We brought the broomstick. Tin Man: So we d like you to keep your promise to us. Oz: Not so fast! Not so fast! I ll have to give the matter a little thought! Go away and come back tomorrow! Lion: (Points toward the bottom of platform)look over there. Oz: I said go! Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain. The Great and Powerful Oz (gives up) has spoken--- (Oz comes out from behind costume. Ozians GASP) Gatekeeper: You you you are an imposter! Allegro (Ozian 1): So much for being great. Jinjur (Ozian 2): AND powerful. HA! Ianu (Ozian 3): You are not so scary after all! Dorothy: Who are you? 11 Oz: Well, I-I-I-I am the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz. Dorothy: You are? Well what about the brain you promised Scarecrow? Oz: Why, anybody can have a brain. Here is a diploma! Scarecrow: Oh joy! I have a brain! Oz: And for you lion. A medal for being so brave against the Wicked Witch. Lion: Oh yay, I am brave. Oz: And because of your kindness here is a heart. Tin Man: Oh thank you, a heart. Lion: How about Dorothy? Oz: I don t think I can help you. (Munchkins and Glinda enter) Glinda: But I think I can. Mopsi (Munchkin 1): Is it true Dorothy is it true?! Ojo (Munchkin 2): Did you defeat the wicked witch?! Dorothy: Yes she melted away and all is good in the land of Oz! Mayor: As Mayor of the Munchkin City, I declare today to be Dorothy Day! (ALL munchkins cheer) Dorothy: Oh thank you all very much. Now, will you please help me? Glinda: Of course. All you have to do is click your heels together three times and say there s no place like home.

12 Kiki (Munchkin 3): That sounds easy. Dorothy: Goodbye, everyone. I ll miss you all so much. Glinda: Now close your eyes and tap your heels together three times. And say Dorothy: There s no place like home. (she closes her eyes and taps her heels) Glinda: One. Dorothy: There s no place like home. (another tap) Glinda: Two. Dorothy: There s no place like home. (third tap) Glinda: Goodbye Dorothy. All: Goodbye Dorothy. (Lights go down a little. Repeat tornado circle with transformation music/tornado SFX around Oz Dorothy. Kansas Dorothy switch spots with Oz Dorothy. All Oz character exit in line. SCENE 12 (Uncle Henry and Aunt Em enter) Uncle Henry: Dorothy, Dorothy Where are you Dorothy? Uncle Henry: We were so worried about you. Kansan Dorothy: (Gets up from ground) Oh, I tried to get back here for days and days. Uncle Henry: Sounds like a bad dream. Aunt Em: But you re safe now. Dorothy: No, you don t understand. This was a real place. And I remember that some of it wasn t very nice, but most of it was beautiful. Don t you believe me? Aunt Em: Of course we believe you, Dorothy. But now we ve got to get you into bed. Dorothy: Has the house come back? It fell on the witch, you know. Uncle Henry: The house is safe and there is no witch. Aunt Em: You are safe and sound Dorothy, back in Kansas. Dorothy: You hear that Toto, we re both safe. And we re home. And I m never going to leave here ever, every again. And Oh, Auntie Em, there really is no place like home! Dorothy, Aunt Em and Uncle Henry exit Curtain Call Aunt Em: (point to Dorothy on ground) Over there Henry! I see her! Uncle Henry: Dorothy! There you are.
