2 21 st Century Skills What do you know about the Wizard of Oz? Your students are probably familiar with bits of the play they are about to watch. Activating their prior knowledge will engage them and help them stay focused. Activity 1: CRITICAL THINKING. Characters What do you know about this story? Tick the characters in this story. Dorothy, a little girl Toto, a dog A Scarecrow Professor Dumbledore Oz, a wizard A Tin Man A Bad Wolf Voldemort, an evil wizard A Lion A Good Witch KINESTHETIC ALTERNATIVE: The teacher reads each character from the list above. Students raise both hands if the answer is YES, or fold their arms if the answer is NO. Activity 2: CRITICAL THINKING.Weather. Draw these types of weather, then complete the sentences. Windy: Windy days are perfect for....

7 Activity 7: LISTENING SKILLS Getting familiar with the songs of the play. Song : Wicked Witch: What is red? Not my... What is shiny? Not my... What has powers like this...? Can you guess? 8 After watching the play 21 st Century Skills 1 st form: Activity 7: CREATIVE THINKING. AUDITORY/ORAL WORK, PLAYING WITH SOUNDS, RHYMES. Limericks! Kids sit in a circle on the floor, one of them has a musical instrument (it can be a tambourine, a jingle bell, a whistle, etc) and uses it to beat the rhythm to the teacher s chant. The teacher starts chanting the limerick and stops so that the kids can come up with a word that rhymes. Here is an example, but you can invent the most hilarious limericks together with your kids! There was this nice girl and her dog whose heart was so full of (e.g: love) she made some good friends though she didn t know (e.g: when) this lovely young girl and her dog Activity 8: TPR. Memory Game. Is it in the play? Yes or no? The teacher divides the class into two groups, each of them sitting down in a line in the playgroud. There is a sign reading YES and another one reading NO stuck on opposing walls. The first child in each line stands up and listens to the teacher s question. He/she should run to the sign with the right answer to the question. The teacher can assign points or just play for the fun of it. Example questions: (Do come up with more of your own!) Is there a baby in the play? Is there a dog in the play? Is there a monkey in the play? Is there a plane in the play? Is there a balloon in the play? Is there a robot in the play? Is there a tiger in the play? Is there a lion in the play? Is there a witch in the play? Is there a pair of red shoes in the play?
9 Activity 9: COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION. Jigsaw puzzle in groups. A) 1st, 2nd AND 3rd FORMS (In small groups, each group works on a different picture) The teacher cuts out the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle and gives one to each student. They try to put them together to form the picture. B) 4TH FORM AND ABOVE (Whole class) The teacher cuts out the pieces of the different jigsaw puzzles and gives one piece to each student. The students will need to walk around and find the classmates who have the other pieces of their picture, then sit in groups and try to put them together to form the picture.
10 Activity 10: CRITICAL THINKING, COLLABORATION, VALUES. Our Yellow Brick Road The play explores different values such as bravery, strength, kindness, love, solidarity, cooperation, collaboration, etc. Give each of your students three or four pieces of yellow paper in the shape of bricks, and ask them to write the values they can remember from the play (you should discuss values with them first). Then go outside to the playground or corridor of your school, and stick the brick together on the floor to make your own Yellow Brick Road. Activity 11: CREATIVE THINKING, COMMUNICATION. Magic Shoes. Step 1: Discussion In the play, Dorothy wanted to go back home, to Kansas. That s what she wished for when she knocked her heels three times. If you could have magic shoes that made your dreams come true, what would you wish for? Encourage students to think about non material wishes. Step 2: Kinesthetic / Hands-on 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd forms: Ask students to bring their favourite pair of shoes to school. Put them on, walk together on the Yellow Brick Road and knock the heels three times to wish for something. Always follow your dreams! 4 th and 5 th forms: Ask students to bring modeling clay and make their own magic shoes. They can even decorate them with pieces of cloth, glitter. When the shoes are ready, kids knock on the heels three times to make their wish. Play some background music to create a special atmosphere. Always follow your dreams! 6 th and 7 th forms: Ask students to bring magazines and cut out all the pairs of shoes they find. Then they should choose the pair that looks magical and stick it on a sheet of paper. They write their wish under the pair of shoes. Step 3: Communication As a follow up, students sit in groups of four and share what they wished for.
11 Activity 12: CRITICAL THINKING, CREATIVE THINKING, COMMUNICATION, COLLABORATION. The Characters Step 1: Discussion, whole class. Here s a list of the main characters in the story. Can you describe them briefly? What do you remember about them? Scarecrow Tin Man Cowardly Lion Dorothy Step 2: Teamwork, small groups: Each team creates an anchor chart for one character (Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, Dorothy). Using construction paper and markers, they should sketch the shape of the character and divide it in half with a vertical line, using the left side for physical appearance and the right side for personality, feelings, traits, etc. Students should include what each character deeply wishes for on the right side of the sketch. Step 3: Sharing, whole class: Once the chart is finished, each team shares their work with the rest of the class. Display the charts on the classroom walls!
